People with abundant, natural-born charisma

Bill Clinton Robert Downey, Jr. Ronald Reagan Robin Quivers Gilda Radner

Who else?

by Anonymousreply 130July 23, 2020 9:35 AM

Reagan robin river radnor? Who's that?

by Anonymousreply 1August 7, 2015 2:29 AM

I never thought Reagan had charisma. Never understood that bullshit about him.

by Anonymousreply 2August 7, 2015 2:32 AM

R2, you woulda got a hard-on for Reagan if you were born between 1890 and 1920.

by Anonymousreply 3August 7, 2015 2:43 AM

Marilyn Monroe

River Phoenix

Elvis

by Anonymousreply 4August 7, 2015 2:43 AM

[quote]I never thought Reagan had charisma. Never understood that bullshit about him.

I think the same about Obama.

But unlike Reagan, he's actually a good president.

by Anonymousreply 5August 7, 2015 2:47 AM

Reagan????

If you have a low IQ, maybe! I never thought of Clinton or even Obama as being charismatic. Biden is way more charismatic than Obama.

by Anonymousreply 6August 7, 2015 3:01 AM

Julia Roberts

by Anonymousreply 7August 7, 2015 3:06 AM

I always thought Bill Clinton was charismatic.

I'm thinking of charismatic rock stars as follows:

Jim Morrison

Mick Jagger

Stevie Nicks

by Anonymousreply 8August 7, 2015 3:51 AM

Judy Garland Bob Dylan Eddie Vedder Drake Frank Sinatra

by Anonymousreply 9August 7, 2015 3:56 AM

by Anonymousreply 10August 7, 2015 3:58 AM

Barbra Streisand

by Anonymousreply 11August 7, 2015 3:58 AM

Julia Roberts

by Anonymousreply 13August 7, 2015 4:01 AM

With Robert Downey, Jr. you're confusing arrogance for charisma.

Gilda Radner was much more demure than charismatic in person.

Reagan had masterful handlers and speech writers. That's the extent of that. Possibly a pleasing personality, but "charisma"? No way.

by Anonymousreply 14August 7, 2015 4:04 AM

Dolly Parton.

by Anonymousreply 15August 7, 2015 4:09 AM

I think Bill Clinton has lots of charisma. He has the ability to charm anyone.

Obama is less charismatic and appeals to you more through his intellect and his passion. He's a smart guy and that's what you find attractive about him. Once in a while, like when he breaks into song, he displays some charm but it's more sporadic.

For celebrities , lots of people find George Clooney charismatic. Audrey Hepburn and Clark Gabel had that reputation as well. Maybe Oprah? There had to be a reason millions tuned into her show and made her a billionaire.

Jennifer Lawrence has a variation of it. She combines hers with ditzy girl appeal.

by Anonymousreply 16August 7, 2015 4:17 AM

Colin Farrell

by Anonymousreply 17August 7, 2015 4:25 AM

Downey is brash and irreverent, but not arrogant.

Dolly is the real deal, yeah very charming and charismatic.

Neither Mick Jagger, JLaw, Streisand, Bob Dylan nor Oprah have even an ounce of charisma.

by Anonymousreply 18August 7, 2015 4:30 AM

That's a good point about Oprah's charisma, R16. For 25 years, millions of housewives with kids would tuned into her show and identified with her, and she had neither husband nor children. What else could it be?

by Anonymousreply 19August 7, 2015 4:30 AM

Martin Luther King, Jr.

by Anonymousreply 20August 7, 2015 4:33 AM

Some televangelists certainly have charisma, like Joel Osteen.

Maybe Muhammad Ali?

Robin Williams?

Goldie Hawn

by Anonymousreply 28August 7, 2015 4:59 AM

Why must one jump through hoops to do anything on this site? If I type out the people in a list format, that's how it should be displayed. Why is there not a 'quote' feature? And all the other simple things, hundreds of other forums allow you to do, without reading a help manual and needing to do convoluted tactics for simple tasks? KISS

by Anonymousreply 35August 7, 2015 5:15 AM

Reagan had lots of charisma. He was a stupid, narrow-minded, spiteful, self-important prig, but he could work a room like nobody's business. And he had a special talent for disagreeing with people to their faces which you almost don't see in politics anymore.

Eliott Spitzer had it.

by Anonymousreply 36August 7, 2015 5:16 AM

The Reverend Jim Jones

by Anonymousreply 37August 7, 2015 5:16 AM

Bill Clinton's charisma could knock you down from a mile away.

Surprisingly, John Malkovich is loaded with charisma in person.

Robin Quivers has charisma? Since when?

by Anonymousreply 38August 7, 2015 5:16 AM

Jim Valvano

by Anonymousreply 39August 7, 2015 5:17 AM

R37 - Reverend Jim Jones - that's the fine line. Many charismatic people are also sociopaths.

by Anonymousreply 40August 7, 2015 5:18 AM

Don't forget Charlie!

by Anonymousreply 41August 7, 2015 5:24 AM

Charismatic 20th Century Presidents: Theodore Roosevelt, Warren Harding, Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, John Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton.

It's easy to overlook Harding, but in his day he was the cat's meow. He was rumored to have three testicles (and also to be part-black), so perhaps he exuded testosterone. At any rate, women threw themselves at him and he was always at the center of a group of men who envied him and wanted to be him.

Ronald Reagan was tremendously charismatic. His political career began as the result of a single speech he gave for Barry Goldwater in 1964. Political bosses marveled at his ability to hold a crowd in the palm of his hand. Two years later they made him Governor of California. Even in the 1960s he was being groomed as a Presidential contender in no small part because of the electrifying effect he had on large groups of supporters.

by Anonymousreply 42August 7, 2015 6:56 AM

Ronald Reagan's charm and charisma only appeals to people with a low IQ. The guy had dementia when he was still president.

by Anonymousreply 43August 7, 2015 7:28 AM

He did have dementia while he was in office but Reagan's charisma was quite real.

I despised Reagan and hated everything about his presidency. However, when I watched his speeches I'd find myself warming to him and believing him. It was weird. The fog would lift as soon as the speech ended and I'd go right back to despising him. It was a bit disconcerting but I just chalked it up to his movie star thing and didn't worry about it. His charm didn't change the fact that he was a disastrous president.

by Anonymousreply 44August 7, 2015 8:17 AM

Ewan McGregor oozes charisma in interviews and in many but not all of his acting gigs.

Audrey Hepburn definitely had it.

Cary Grant

I think Obama's charisma is very strong and Clinton has it but in a different way.

If Al Gore had even a little the world would be a very different place Lieberman did not help, he has the opposite of charisma.

by Anonymousreply 64August 7, 2015 1:56 PM

Bill Clinton

by Anonymousreply 65August 7, 2015 1:58 PM

Reagan had charm, but he was completely sexless. That was part of his charm.

by Anonymousreply 66August 7, 2015 2:03 PM

I was at a speaker's series at the Kennedy Center in DC right after 9/11. Bill Clinton was the speaker that night. As we waited in the large hall/lobby to enter the auditorium, secret service appeared out of no where, instructing a small group of us to step back. Out came Bill, strolling down the length of the lobby. We had a close unobstructed view as he was escorted through the lobby.

The moment I saw him, I noticed the man simply glowed. There was some kind of aura around him. I share this experience not because I was in such awe, but it was so obvious. He exudes charisma, like no other person I've met or seen. He's also very easy with a smile.

(I may have told this here before, but worth repeating.)

by Anonymousreply 67August 7, 2015 3:08 PM

Johnny Carson

by Anonymousreply 68August 7, 2015 3:20 PM

So what's charisma and can you learn it?

by Anonymousreply 69August 7, 2015 3:34 PM

R67, Clinton does have that unique aura you describe. He also has that rare gift of being able to make the person to whom he's talking think he or she is the only person in the room. He looks you directly in the eyes and he isn't looking over your shoulder for someone more important. He has more charisma than any other president and possibly any other person I've ever met.

I never saw Reagan's charisma. I heard about it from others, but he never appealed to me.

Kennedy was somewhat charismatic, but I was left cold when I met him. I thought he was probably manipulative and insincere.

Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama are listeners. They hear what people say to them, a gift in itself.

Among older actors I've met, Paul Newman and Rock Hudson were both charismatic. James Dean, Sal Mineo and Audrey Hepburn were too.

Clinton looks acts and sounds like a used car salesman. Is that charisma, that you know he's lying to you but don't feel it is ill-intentioned? Not unlike John Edwards. I suppose, but it is not really what OP is after, which is the kind of charisma which makes you BELIEVE. Like Barbara Jordan in olden times. I think Jerry Brown may have had it in the seventies, but clearly lost it along the way. .

by Anonymousreply 74August 7, 2015 6:16 PM

Eric Roberts at R73

What makes a person charismatic? (from the Forbes link, below)

[quote]Here are 5 important qualities of a charismatic person – how many do you have?

[quote]1) Be Self Confident [quote]Like yourself. It’s much easier for others to like you if you like yourself. [quote]Be optimistic. Keep your glass half-full. Be enthusiastic. [quote]Be comfortable with who you are. Be consistent. [quote]Hold your own. Think Sheryl Sandberg – she holds her own in a male dominated geeky world and is still feminine. She knows herself and isn’t trying to be someone else. [quote]Don’t: Trot out all your issues. No one wants to be with Debbie Downer. We all have problems, but compartmentalize them, park them in a corner and bring them out for close friends and family.

[quote]2) Tell Great Stories [quote]“The universe is made of stories, not of atoms.” (Muriel Rukeyser, Poet and Activist) [quote]Speak with conviction. Use words like “I am sure” vs. tentative words like “I think, I hope and I feel.” [quote]Be tuned into humor. Self-deprecating humor can included – it’s ok to tell a story about an embarrassing moment. [quote]Be relevant. Know what’s happening in the world and around you. People want to be with people who are in the know. [quote]Don’t: Confuse humor with bad joke telling. Don’t self-deprecate yourself out of the conversation. Don’t put yourself down so much that it takes away from who you are.

[quote]3) Body Speak [quote]Be open and approachable. Gracious and graceful. [quote]Walk up to someone, smile, make eye contact, shake hands. Introduce yourself by saying your name, “Hi, I’m Ann, Ann Roberts.” That way people hear your voice twice. [quote]Own the room when you walk into it. Think President Obama when he walks to the podium. Get your own personal swagger. [quote]Don’t: Overdo it. When you smile, be authentic. If your smile is not in your eyes, people will know you’re faking it.

[quote]4) Make The Conversation About The Other Person [quote]Let the world revolve around the person you’re talking to. [quote]Make the person feel like they are the only person on the planet at that time. [quote]Immediately put others at ease and make them feel comfortable with you. [quote]Don’t: Let your ego drive the conversation. We all have egos. If your ego is in overdrive, check it at the door.

[quote]5) Be A Good listener [quote]You can’t remember everything, but remembering someone’s name is a biggie. Here’s a trick: When you are introduced to a person, immediately repeat their name. Example: “Amanda, it’s so nice to meet you.” [quote]Listen with interest. Pay attention. Engage. Be empathetic. [quote]Don’t: When you’re talking with someone at an event, do not check your cell phone or look around the room to see if someone more important is there. If you want to find someone more important, make the conversation brief and move on graciously."

[R67], I had a similar experience. I was at a campaign event with 3 friends. In the rush out, two of us wandered into a side corridor. We’re both short. Suddenly we feel this presence from above gently turning both of us and it’s Bill smiling down at us. I would have fallen to my knees right there.

Also Keith Richards. Never met him, but everyone who has talks about how charismatic he is. Julia ???said in You’ll Never Eat Lunch in This Town Again (and she never did) that she met both Mick and Keith, and that Mick had no charisma while Keith had tons.

Clinton earned the nickname "Slick Willie" because he can instantly turn on abundant charisma when he needs it. It's really the sign of a sociopathic personality, to be able to use people and then discard them when you don't need them anymore.

Many successful politicians share the trait, along with people who made it to the top of the entertainment field -- Streisand comes to mind. Kanye. Sinatra. Trump. Madonna.

How else did he do the monstrosities he did without charisma..... but back to gay world, I think Shangela from the Ru Paul show is one of the most charismatic people i have seen on TV. Her and Kelly Clarkson.
