My doctor told me to eat a few cashews every day

What he didn't tell me was that I would have to take out a second mortgage to buy them. Why are cashews so expensive?

by Anonymousreply 74March 15, 2022 11:02 PM

Do you have a Trader Joe's nearby, OP? It sells nuts cheaper than most. Why did your doctor recommend cashews?

by Anonymousreply 1August 3, 2015 2:05 AM

Jesus. If cashews are so EXPENSIVE, eat a fucking Snickers. See what that accomplishes. Who said eating healthy is CHEAP?

by Anonymousreply 2August 3, 2015 2:10 AM

[quote]My doctor told me to eat a few cashews every day

Why?

by Anonymousreply 3August 3, 2015 2:14 AM

If it's only a few each day surely that won't break you?

by Anonymousreply 4August 3, 2015 2:14 AM

Make sure you get the no salt ones, OP. And the store brand/generic ones are a lot cheaper. Also the "non whole" ones are a lot cheaper, but don't taste as good.

by Anonymousreply 5August 3, 2015 2:16 AM

Almonds and Pecans are good for you too.

by Anonymousreply 6August 3, 2015 2:16 AM

66% of this unsaturated fatty acid content within Cashews are heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, similar to those found in olive oil. Studies of diabetic patients show that monounsaturated fat, when added to a low-fat diet, can help to reduce high triglyceride levels.

by Anonymousreply 7August 3, 2015 2:21 AM

They aren't expensive at all.

by Anonymousreply 8August 3, 2015 2:30 AM

Go to Rite Aid or whatever your local chain drug store is. They sell their own brands of cashews cheap.

by Anonymousreply 9August 3, 2015 2:35 AM

I have a history of heart problems in my family and my doctor what I could do to make sure that everything stays fine, and he suggested some cashews everyday, added to my already low fat /high exercise diet.

by Anonymousreply 10August 3, 2015 2:45 AM

You're on a high exercise diet? Sounds delicious.

by Anonymousreply 11August 3, 2015 2:50 AM

Eat Brazil nuts and get radioactive as a bonus, OP!

Yum!

They go on sale at places like CVS, Walgreen's and Rite-Aid all the time. Stock up.

Or maybe your doctor was just trying to find a diplomatic way of saying "Nuts, to you!"

by Anonymousreply 13August 3, 2015 5:06 AM

Wallnuts are even more expensive.

by Anonymousreply 14August 3, 2015 7:39 AM

Traders or Sprouts bulk bins. They're still expensive though.

by Anonymousreply 15August 3, 2015 7:55 AM

R14 Here in SoCal they've actually started robbing truckloads of nuts and selling them.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 16August 3, 2015 7:58 AM

Cashews are expensive because a) they're in short supply, and b) cashews belong to the same family as poison ivy and poison sumac, and in order to elimate the toxins that can make you seriously ill, they're put through a labor-intensive roasting process before shelling. This also must be done outdoors because the raw roasting cashews release gases that can impair breathing, sometimes fatally.

by Anonymousreply 17August 3, 2015 8:53 AM

Healthy food is in an investment in your health. When you are healthy you will spend a lot less on hospital bills, doctor consultations, pharmaceutical drugs, etc.

by Anonymousreply 18August 3, 2015 9:20 AM

No guarantees of that, r18.

Proving god does or doesn't exist is on the same order.

by Anonymousreply 19August 3, 2015 11:41 AM

Considering the laborious handwork needed to process the nuts, as noted above in r17, I'm surprised cashews are as INexpensive as they are. Buy the best you can afford, OP, it's a good and healthy treat. Cashew butter is amazingly toothsome.

by Anonymousreply 20August 3, 2015 11:43 AM

I simply substitute a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup every day.

My doctor didn't tell me not to.

by Anonymousreply 21August 3, 2015 11:50 AM

Find a large package at a reasonable price. Take out a small amount for now and keep the rest in a Ziplock bag in the freezer, since nuts tend to go bad in a couple of months.

by Anonymousreply 22August 3, 2015 11:53 AM

That's a few cashews every day, OP, not a few cans every day.

by Anonymousreply 23August 3, 2015 11:53 AM

raw nuts are expensive but stick to the orders and eat a few a day. I know it'll be hard not eating it all at once but you need to practice discipline.

by Anonymousreply 24August 3, 2015 11:56 AM

Aldi's, people.....Aldi's!

Huge selection of nuts at low prices.

by Anonymousreply 25August 3, 2015 11:58 AM

I didn't know you could toast almonds in the microwave in about a minute. My sister showed me.

1. Handful of raw almonds on a flat plate.

2. MW on HIGH for 45 secs.

3. Stir around with your fingers.

4. MW again on HIGH for 25 secs.

by Anonymousreply 26August 3, 2015 1:16 PM

Because of the California drought, almonds and cashews are now the same price at Whole Foods (8.99 a pound).

by Anonymousreply 27August 3, 2015 1:49 PM

California walnuts will be sky high too.

As will California pistachios.

Nut trees are the water buffaloes of the arboreal world.

by Anonymousreply 28August 3, 2015 3:36 PM

It is better to eat a variety of different nuts rather than the same one over and over OP. And yes, while nuts are certainly healthy they are also high in calories so be careful about over indulging.

by Anonymousreply 29August 3, 2015 3:38 PM

"This also must be done outdoors because the raw roasting cashews release gases that can impair breathing, sometimes fatally."

Amatuers. Mine are guaranteed to be fatal.

by Anonymousreply 30August 3, 2015 4:27 PM

There are many things you should always buy at Trader Joes. Nuts are one of them.

by Anonymousreply 31August 3, 2015 5:41 PM

A ldi's is where "bargain" shoppers shop. I will never go there.

by Anonymousreply 32August 3, 2015 5:47 PM

I like getting them at CVS when they’re on sale.

by Anonymousreply 33July 2, 2021 1:48 AM

Almonds and walnuts I've heard about the health benefits of. Cashews? Doctor recommended, yet? That's a new one for me. I love them but I always understood them to be calorie bombs without the benefit.

by Anonymousreply 34July 2, 2021 1:57 AM

I love cashews and don’t care how much they cost.

by Anonymousreply 35July 2, 2021 2:07 AM

Fancy whole organic are the healthiest, OP.

by Anonymousreply 36July 2, 2021 2:14 AM

The healthiest nuts are in order:

Almonds

Brazil Nuts

Cashews

Pistachios

Walnuts

Peanuts

As per my cardiologist, it's preferable to eat them unsalted and raw.

by Anonymousreply 37July 2, 2021 2:15 AM

I couldn't attach the link for some reason, but Yupik Nuts organic raw cashews are $22.98 for 2.2 lbs on Amazon. They are very good and I think the price isn't bad.

by Anonymousreply 38July 2, 2021 2:16 AM

R37, I think pumpkin and sunflowers seeds are very healthy too. Yes, unsalted and raw are best.

by Anonymousreply 39July 2, 2021 2:17 AM

Cashews look like little baby penises.

by Anonymousreply 40July 2, 2021 2:35 AM

Just steal them from Walmart like normal people.

by Anonymousreply 41July 2, 2021 2:55 AM

Is your doctor Dr. Oz?

by Anonymousreply 42July 2, 2021 5:52 AM

This is what cashews look like on the tree and they are not a nut, but a drupes, I shit you not.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 43July 2, 2021 6:04 AM

OP types poor.

by Anonymousreply 44July 2, 2021 6:08 AM

OP Make sure you get the unsalted ones that are harvested by virgins under a full moon.

by Anonymousreply 45July 2, 2021 6:43 AM

Store brand nuts are cheaper for a reason. They are usually of substandard quality and older harvests. The nutritional value is nearly the same, but the taste is not.

by Anonymousreply 46July 2, 2021 7:39 AM

I grab my nuts at Costco.

by Anonymousreply 47July 2, 2021 7:44 AM

^^^ can I grab your nuts at Costco?

by Anonymousreply 48July 2, 2021 9:51 AM

They’re not that expensive.

Macadamia nuts are.

by Anonymousreply 49July 2, 2021 10:05 AM

OP Cashews are fattening and full of carbs. They are one of the worst nuts out there.

You should be eating about a dozen walnuts & almonds per day - they are the best by far in limited amounts.

by Anonymousreply 50July 2, 2021 10:13 AM

This is the first time I heard a doctor prescribing a cashew. I never thought it's good for your health. I actually thought it's bad for you.

by Anonymousreply 51July 2, 2021 10:18 AM

This is one of the 2015 threads being bumped and if I recall, cashews were briefly considered a heart-healthy food. Or maybe OP had a copper deficiency.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 52July 2, 2021 10:26 AM

OP, go suck on a penny instead, it only costs a penny, even you should be fine with that cheap bastard that you are.

by Anonymousreply 53July 2, 2021 12:45 PM

I splurged once and got the expensive cashews from Nuts.com and I didn't think they were better than the generic kind

by Anonymousreply 54July 2, 2021 12:55 PM

R13- What really happened is- OP walked in to his doctor's ( actually a SHRINK) office one day wearing nothing but plastic wrap and when the doctor saw OP he said- I CAN CLEARLY SEE YOU'RE NUTS!

by Anonymousreply 55July 2, 2021 1:03 PM

Again the cashew is not a nut and Oat Milk is not milk and should be clearly labeled as such.

by Anonymousreply 56July 2, 2021 1:20 PM

Oat Drink?

by Anonymousreply 57July 2, 2021 7:34 PM

Oat beverage.

by Anonymousreply 58July 2, 2021 7:38 PM

Almonds are healthier.

by Anonymousreply 59July 2, 2021 7:40 PM

Oat-ade

by Anonymousreply 60July 2, 2021 7:44 PM

A Brazilian friend always got annoyed when people said "cashews." She'd say "THose aren't cashews. They're cashew nuts." We thought she was just being pissy until she told us that to Brazilians, "cashew" is a fruit, and the nut is just a weird-looking part of it. I had no idea.

haha r41 beat me to it. Missed that.

by Anonymousreply 62July 2, 2021 7:53 PM

r43, that is.

by Anonymousreply 63July 2, 2021 7:54 PM

R61 i knew that, but is the fruit edible?

by Anonymousreply 64July 2, 2021 11:40 PM

R61 is the fruit even edible?

by Anonymousreply 65July 2, 2021 11:41 PM

Life's and Aldi's carry them for a reasonable price, if you have any around you. They have them in 2 differ ent sections, packaged differently. (Think baking and specialty aisles.)

by Anonymousreply 66July 3, 2021 12:45 AM

Life's should be Lidl's.

by Anonymousreply 67July 3, 2021 2:04 AM

I made peanut butter in my food processor and it was so much better than storebought. I'm going to try cashew butter next :)

by Anonymousreply 68July 20, 2021 2:45 AM

I ate too many and fucked up my kidneys. Had to drink a ton of water and apple cider vinegar to cleanse.

by Anonymousreply 69July 20, 2021 2:53 AM

R19, there are more guarantees than if you eat a crappy diet. I see a lot of medical records in my work. The amount of chronic disease is high. Most of these patients eat the standard American diet with too much sugar and processed foods. Diet can improve or reverse a lot of chronic conditions. The doctors I know who use a dietary approach are able to consistently decrease or cut out the prescription drugs patients take, while reducing or eliminating the symptoms.

by Anonymousreply 70July 20, 2021 3:02 AM

R68 fascinating

by Anonymousreply 71July 20, 2021 3:04 AM

Yes, the fruit is edible. I visited a plantation on the island of St. Lucia years ago. The fruit is very sweet. I found it disgusting (I don't like the nuts, either) but the locals enjoyed it. I gather it is too fragile to export, so it has little value. A typical jar of the nuts is basically the entire production of a tree (or two) for a year -which is why they are so expensive. They are also hard to grow outside warm, tropical climates.

by Anonymousreply 72July 20, 2021 3:23 AM

Lol R2. That's the depressing thing and why the poor are usually obese. It's cheap to eat unhealthy, expensive to eat healthy.

by Anonymousreply 73March 15, 2022 10:47 PM

If you only eat a couple a day it wouldn't be that expensive. But hard to refrain from over-indulging. Nuts are one of those delicious snack foods that I just can't leave alone. Especially macadamia nuts, which are ridiculously expensive.
