The 70s were ugly but they weren't that ugly which you can see in tv shows and movies of the period.

Many people laughed at people who dressed like that in the 70s.

Some people think we all just took it for granted.

Yes, most people didn't really dress like that. Blame the clothing manufacturers and the professional style setters. The general public didn't demand those looks.

People's visions of certain eras get so distorted with time....they pick the most extreme elements.

To be fair, a good third of those photos are illustrations from knitting patterns. So, not something that was being sold off the rack. Instead, it was something your grandma or girlfriend knitted you for Christmas. It wasn't just articles for guys, either - women's clothing and even knitted and crocheted toy patterns frequently veered into the absurd.
