For me I could give a crap about jumping and tricks for "points." I'm looking for the shear beauty of it all. This Biellmann performance is pure perfect in every way. Every movement is spectacular.
Tonya Harding at the Olympics.
Also, there was one (before she got more famous) where Nancy Kerrigan spent more time on her ass than on her feet.

Canadians Barbara Underhill and Paul Martini skating to UNCHAINED MELODY, circa 1990. I thought these two had much more chemistry than Torvill and Dean even though they were not involved in real life. Sorry I'm too stupid to post a link, but this performance kicks ASS.

Oooo definitely the evil Suraya Bonaly or however you spell it. Remember when she refused her bronze medal.....good stuff.

Michelle Kwan's first world championship long program. She put in an extra jump at the last minute and clinched the gold.
Too bad that sort of spontaneity died with the new scoring system

Alexander Abt never got the credit he deserved in the Yagudin/Plushenko era (partly because he was battling injuries a lot of the time). But I loved his skating, more than Yagudin's in fact, and mostly importantly, he was HOT.

I was just going to mention them.
They were so gorgeously in synch as pairs skaters.
It was such a shock when he died so young. He must have had a cardiac anomaly because he was young and in top physical condition.

Too bad she never won the Olympic Gold.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | August 2, 2015 11:05 PM |
Unfortunately Tonya Harding had the reputation of looking like a bull. In person she's actually petite
by Anonymous | reply 36 | August 2, 2015 11:07 PM |

They were hideous in every way!
by Anonymous | reply 37 | August 2, 2015 11:24 PM |
I think this pro performance of Kristi Yamaguchi is better than the performance that won her the Olympic gold.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | August 3, 2015 12:35 AM |
For me, nothing beats Michelle Kwan's long program at the 2003 US National Championships in Dallas. Watching her skate with such emotion and focus following yet another Olympic disappointment the year prior made me laugh through tears. As a fan, I was so proud of her for continuing her career. Now, I always think of her when I hear Aranjuez.

Janet Lynn was fantastic. She never got the medals she deserved because of the school figures.

R1 you must be talking about her World Championships performance in 1993... the tragic skate to Beauty and the Beast, which was basically the reason she got clubbed in 94.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | August 6, 2015 6:42 PM |
R27 yes, but she was a major cunt. If I remember correctly, she threatened him constantly to keep him in line, even so far as manipulating him by saying she was going to abort their baby.

[quote]Michelle Kwan's first world championship long program. She put in an extra jump at the last minute and clinched the gold.
Michelle Kwan should not have won that first World Title of hers. They basically handed it to her to reward her for "growing up" in one year. Chen Lu had the better skate and should have repeated as Champion.

This is my mother's favorite, they dance stunningly.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | August 6, 2015 6:49 PM |
I think my all time favorite skate is Midori's Freeskate in Albertville. I love how you can tell she's stressed and nervous the first half of the program, especially after falling on the Triple Axel, and then like 3 minutes later decides she has no more fucks to give and throws another Triple Axel and lands it. That right there has always exemplified true grit and guts. And after she lands it, she skates with so much joy which, along with her amazing jumps, was something she was known for. I've actually not ever seen another skater that ever skated like they actually loved it. You could tell Midori actually loved skating.

All of Gordeeva and Grinkov's programs from 1993-1995. They were really hitting their artistic stride when he died.

Midori landing a triple Axel at 14.

I wish one skater today would just skate for the love of skating. Yes, I know "what's the point" and it is very expensive but Janet Lynn was gorg!
I also wish today's skaters would bring back old moves of the past. I'd love to see a "hamill camel" again.

That's what I love about Midori. You could tell she actually loved it and there was always joy in her skating. You know that she loves skating because she still competes in "Senior" competitions.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | August 9, 2015 7:12 PM |
Completely agree, R65. Mishkutenok and Dmitriev were relegated to second due to the sentimental favorites Gordeeva and Grinkov, but M&D out-skated them in the short and long. The 1994 Olympics had the absolute worst results and were the beginning of when even casual fans started to notice that the judging didn't pass the smell test. Torvill and Dean losing to awful Grishuk and Platov, Alexei BOREmonov winning the Gold in the men's, Osksana "Two-Foot Landing" Baiul being handed the Gold in the ladies event--just terrible judging all around.
I lived in France back in the day and knew a European figure skating judge who had actually been on the judging panel for major European competitions. He said that it was well known that the Russian Mafia basically ran figure skating and that's why Grishuk and Platov won the Ice Dance. I think Oksana "Pasha" Grishuk was getting boned by a mafioso. She even thought he was going to make her a movie star, but he eventually tired of her and dumped her. He said Russian mob ties also helped Annasina and Peizerat, but it didn't really matter because they were the class of the field the year they won the Olympics anyway.
For me, my favorite skating performances are Michelle Kwan's short and long at the 1998 US Nationals. If she had skated like that in Nagano, she would have won the Gold over pipsqueak Lipinski. Also a shout-out for Chen Lu's 1996 Worlds long program. It was exquisite. Because of the Code of Points changes made after the disaster that was Salt Lake, you don't see programs like these anymore and figure skating has become unwatchable. It's sad how it's lost its luster. It used to be so fun to watch.
by Anonymous | reply 93 | January 29, 2016 9:49 PM |
I know CW is that Kwan's 1998 Oylmpics LP was too cautious and slow, but it's still one of my all-time favorites. The spinning in both directions and that entry into the triple loop and then landing it right on the note was pure perfection.
by Anonymous | reply 94 | January 29, 2016 10:22 PM |
My favorite is the one of Debi Thomas trying to explain her current situation: unemployed MD, trailer, bedbugs, etc. She put more spins into her response than she's ever done on ice.

Sasha Cohen changed the sport. A former gymnast. Compared to Kwan and everyone else, she used her hands to express herself. Limber like a contortionist. I could never like Kwan again after Cohen came on the scene.

[quote] I could never like Kwan again after Cohen came on the scene.
So you're saying you liked skaters that fell apart and could never win?
by Anonymous | reply 99 | January 30, 2016 3:12 AM |
Cohen was stunning to watch. Too bad she was a mental lightweight. Still, she held it together to get Silver in Torino and relegated the dreadful Irina Slutskaya to Bronze. I'll always thank her for that.
by Anonymous | reply 100 | January 30, 2016 3:50 AM |
Didn't she only get Silver because everyone else sucked too?
by Anonymous | reply 101 | January 30, 2016 3:52 AM |
No, R101. Shizuka Arakawa won Gold with a beautiful, flawless skate. Sasha won Silver with only one mistake on a jump, and it was early in her program. Slutskaya did make a few mistakes and dropped to Bronze, but she was already trailing Cohen after the short.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | January 30, 2016 3:55 AM |

Dang, it sure was.
R102, I grew to appreciate Shizuka Arakawa as the years went on. But I was a Sasha stan who was bitter at the time. But as the years went on and we had way worse winners, I came to accept that Arakawa deserved to win.
My favo was Yuna Kim "Adios Nonino" in 2014. I loved the Italian commentators who were FURIOUS with the judges.
