Sociology is so fascinating. A decade ago, dudes wearing black crew socks would have been considered weird or at least unfashionable. Today, it's what all the cool jocks and bros do. The gym and basketball court is a sea of guys wearing black crew socks, often with a Nike swoosh or Adidas emblem.

Black socks make me giggle. Black socks with shorts and flip flops makes me laugh out loud.

If football and basketball players do it, it automatically becomes cool and mimicked. Sports and athletes are THE biggest influence on male fashion and culture, and the influence is increasing evermore.

I've always worn black socks, for years, and was thrilled when this became a hot trend; it really opened up the market of cool-looking black crew socks. My favorites: this six pack of Converse socks.

Well since I have a sock fetish (only on hot guys though) and black crew socks are especially hot!!

It strikes me how important clothing is to our culture's masculine ideal and attractiveness. Even something as seemingly minor as socks communicates masculinity, athleticism, being one of the cool kids. You wear the wrong type of socks, and people think you're not cool, or not attractive. You wear the right socks, and people think you're hot, or at least it enhances your credibility as one of the cool bros.

I remember - fondly - the thick, floppy, cotton socks of the early 80's. Usually white, and so floppy they scrunched just about the ankles. They looked great on fit, athletic legs. Or more specifically, the legs looked great with them.

Black, tight crew socks don't seem to have the same effect. But then, my eyes aren't what they used to be.

Everyone at my gym wears black socks & some of the guys even wear compression socks up to their knees. (These are fucking hot guys too). Anyway, I bought under armor black socks...and they shed like crazy. I've never found a brand of black socks that don't shed...except very expensive ones that aren't worth wearing to the gym (i.e., $12 per pair).

The only think I see that is new is that these guys aren't rolling their socks down. After a lifetime of doing so, I'd feel funny pulling my crew socks all the way up.
