What was the first car you ever owned?

Mine was an AMC Gremlin. I know, but I honestly didn't think it was that ugly and besides, my parents bought it for me and there were quite a few of them on the road back then.

Datsun B210

Tin can that had great road feel and a very easy clutch.

I liked the way my Gremlin drove too. Was your car the same color as the one in the picture R2? Mine was actually yellow.

by Anonymousreply 3July 30, 2015 3:18 AM

VW Bug. Loved it.

by Anonymousreply 4July 30, 2015 3:28 AM

1954 Plymouth Belvedere -- Light Blue

by Anonymousreply 5July 30, 2015 3:31 AM

R3 this is R2. R2 is NOT a gremlin its a datsun as stated.

by Anonymousreply 6July 30, 2015 3:33 AM

VW Scirocco.

by Anonymousreply 7July 30, 2015 3:37 AM

A Chevy Vega, then a Ford Pinto.

by Anonymousreply 8July 30, 2015 3:50 AM

Renault 5, also known as LeCar

by Anonymousreply 9July 30, 2015 3:52 AM

R2/R6 I did not say your car was a Gremlin. I said my Gremlin drove good and asked you if your car was the same color as the one in the picture.

1976 Pacer! Excellent!

by Anonymousreply 11July 30, 2015 4:24 AM

Datsun 510 4-door sedan (used). I think it was a '68, but I'm not positive. Next was a '76 Toyota Corona (new.)

Mercedes-Benz ML 430

Strangely enough, another '73, a Mercury Cougar XR-7 -- which I managed to bounce off a telephone pole and demolish.

'65 Mustang Convertible It was red and lovely, but unfortunately, I bought it without getting it vetted thoroughly and I had nothing but problems with it.

by Anonymousreply 17July 30, 2015 3:19 PM

A 1974 Dodge Dart. This color (link), which better concealed the rust that was eating it alive.

A red '93 Pontiac Sunbird. My in-laws gifted it to me when I was in high school back in 2006.

I miss that car.

I had an AMC Gremlin and the thing wouldn't die. I kept saying when it breaks down for good, I can get a new car. I eventually bought a new car and relegated it to a second car. It last five more years. It may have been ugly, (I liked it) but it ran good.

by Anonymousreply 20July 30, 2015 3:29 PM

I had a 1959 Fiat Bianchina Transformabile Series II (convertible). It had a 2 cylinder engine and there were nearby hills, so I always took some along to push when I went for a drive.

Great little car. Red with black leather upholstery and very Italian.

1998 Volkswagen Golf Wolfsburg Edition. I loved that car. This was during the time VW still made high quality cars. Owned them since and they are crap.

Also a Renault 5, aka LeCar. It went forward and backward and not much else, but that was all I needed.

by Anonymousreply 24July 30, 2015 4:24 PM

Mine was a 1983 Ford Mustang, red with white interior. The only options were an am-fm radio with cassette and a flip-up, removable sun roof (really handy if it was off and it started to rain). I bought it used (it was a dealer repo). It was a total piece of crap mechanically, but it’ll always hold a place in my heart.

A Ford Maverick - blue with a white vinyl hard top. Looking at this picture it's not as bad as I remember.

1969 Buick Skylark. Dark green with a black landau roof. The thing had bench seats. Every Sunday I would wash it, wax it, and Armour-All the seats. If your weren't wearing your seatbelt and I went around a curve, you were going to slide from one side of the car to the other. There's a pic of my beloved in my HS yearbook. The sun is glinting off the right rear corner panel.

I smile every time I watch My Cousin Vinny. Ralph Macchio and the other guy were driving a metallic mint green Buick Skylark.

r2 - Was that the Datsun marketed as the "Honeybee?"

by Anonymousreply 28July 30, 2015 5:25 PM

My mother's used Smart car when she got a Mini. My friend called it "the yellow tuna can". I called it Smartina Navratilova.

by Anonymousreply 29July 30, 2015 5:57 PM

Mercedes-Benz 300TE 4Matic. I loved mine, and the first thing I did was drive it to my friend's house to show him. He was less than impressed.

He took one look and said the following: "Haven't you ever heard of a coupe?" Yes, he was gay and a bit bitchy just like me.

First car given to me by my parents or first car I bought with my money?

by Anonymousreply 31July 30, 2015 6:32 PM

R31 does it fucking matter? List both. This isn't going on your permanent record!

by Anonymousreply 32July 30, 2015 6:34 PM

For me(in 1970), a 1959 Rambler Ambassador. Big, black and ran like a tank, although it was great on gas. My mom sold it when I went overseas, I was crestfallen when I found out. I'm sure that behemoth is still going strong.

My husband's first(in 1957) was a 1936 Plymouth Touring Car. He'd worked and saved to buy it from a family friend, and had it checked out by the father(he was a car mechanic)of the girl he was dating(he was young, what can I say?)

by Anonymousreply 33July 30, 2015 7:11 PM

A 1978 Cadillac Sedan deVille that I bought in 1988. Same grey colour as this one, except mine had the exterior opera lamps and locking wire wheels. I miss that car more than any other I've owned.

A brown Chevrolet Chevette held together with duct tape. Lovingly called the Golden Shitbox. Having more than one passenger in the car almost made it impossible to climb low grade hills. It got me through high school and my first year of college.

Both my parents had Mercedes so when I turned 16 and got my license, they got me one too. They all matched :( and while it was great having a car of my own, it definitely was not the Porsche convertible I had in mind.

How do you find a thread from five years ago? I did a search and I could not find this thread.

10 year old Ford LTD that was a high school graduation gift from my parents. Red white a white top.
