AIDS ?

The 80s weren't so awful. It was a time of peace. The first home computers out on the market, local chat BBS appeared then AOL. Reagan wasn't so bad of a president. "Back to the Future" and Michael Jackson became big. It was peacetime here, no Vietnam war. Disco was over. Finding a job wasn't hard. Except for the BAD HAIR, the 1980s was a rather pleasant decade. Don't know why you'd hate it. Did you live through it or are you basing your hate of it on old media and heresay?

AIDS. countless AIDS-related deaths, AIDS hysteria, gay panic.

No brainer especially if you were gay and lived in NYC, LA or SF. Half your friends died- horribly and the rest of us thought it was just a matter of time- compounded by homophobia and the political climate. Might as well have been WW3.

r3 is demented.

A few good TV shows, a few good films, and some of the music was okay. Everything else about the 80s was wretched.

They were the gayest decade by far and I wish I had been alive during them.

Jeeze. This thread is so old it's nearly from the eighties!

The 80’s was a pretty great decade to be a kid in flyoverstan, actually.

Gays were just about ready to be accepted as just another alternative lifestyle in the early 80s. Punk/Alternative Rock was surging, as well. It may have been just me, but when AIDS became more widespread and the fear of what was unknown about it took root, I got the sense that society went back to the 50s. Reagan called it the “gay disease” and that it was God’s way of exterminating gays and their lifestyle.
It was a very scary and traumatic time that forced us back to more conventional culture. One can sense it by the bland music (sappy love ballads/synth/pop) and in TV and movies

The homophobia and racism that enabled the HIV epidemic and was behind the War on Drugs is so disgusting to look back on. Anyone who idolizes Reagan and Bush Sr. is an idiot with no empathy.

"Reagan wasn't so bad of a president."
He destroyed the middle class with "trickle down economics" bullshit. Fuck him

Reagan called it the “gay disease” and that it was God’s way of exterminating gays and their lifestyle…
…and that no one should care.

The 2015 TROLL IS BACK!

The 80s were great besides AIDS. The music scene was much better than today. I think in general people were politically correct enough to be cool without going overboard. There was a better party scene. Drugs and sex were easier to get.
