Celebrities You're Surprised Are Still Alive

Kirk Douglas

by Anonymousreply 215September 24, 2020 1:08 AM

Harper Lee, alive at 89, and finally publishing her second book, a sequel to the first.

by Anonymousreply 1July 18, 2015 12:02 PM

Zsa zsa. Though I know her health is bad and she's never in public. Must be hard on her.

Barbara Walters would have died if she didn't have the heart surgery. Before the surgery she didn't look so good.

Maggie smith. I love her but she seems to be getting a bit frail.

George HW Bush. Not a "star" but public figure.

On that topic, I'm surprised Monica lewinsky hasn't been in a "car accident" by now. Maybe I watch too much TV.

Not surprised that Maureen O'Hara or Angela Lansbury are still alive.

You could tell years ago that they would live a long time because they both took good care of their health and were never excessive smokers, drinkers, etc.

by Anonymousreply 30July 18, 2015 10:40 PM

I was surprised when I found out that Tony Bennett and Vic Damone are still alive, only because these were among my long dead grandparents' favorite singers and I naturally assumed they were in their age group.

I remember in the space of about a month, Courtney Love was photographed rolling around naked on the streets of N.Y, put on suicide watch on her 40th birthday, letting a homeless man suck her tit, a string of other public embarrassments and a failed album, and photographed being carried away on a stretcher looking extremely unwell... I really thought she was destined to go down the Dana Plato path.

Bizarre that 10 or so years later she's in such a seemingly good place and having more success than a lot of her contemporaries. Also Olivia de Havilland just because GWTW was SO long ago, close to 80 years ago and she was playing an adult in it... there's almost nobody left from her era. Valentina Cortese as well.

by Anonymousreply 106August 5, 2015 4:10 AM

I could've sworn that Don Murray (pretty big star in the '50s and '60s; once married to Hope Lange) died years ago, but one of his movies was on TV this morning and I looked him up and was shocked to discover he's still with us. I always found him quite hot.

The posters upthread who mentioned Yolo & Madonna. Both of em will kick well on....eat right & obsessives about their health & mega wealth to help keep it all that way and in check. Fit older women have great lifespan longevity, particularly when they've never been heifers, have given birth, nor massive drinkers and non-smokers.

Yolo @ 100 ++ is vv cool to me, Madonna no so much & in fact the latter is bloody frightening.

Just saw Scaramouche and Richard Anderson is to die for. I felt like a sighing 14 year old girl.

And I'm anything but. Well outwardly anyway.

by Anonymousreply 118August 12, 2015 9:31 PM

Yeah, flat because it's live and not lip sync and he was nervous -- but, yeah, no doubt limited range too. Pure teen idol stuff.

BUT I heard him speak (where I first saw that clip which I have wanted ever since so happy it finally appeared on youtube) and though he made it clear he had no interest in being a role model, he was a good one -- because he wasn't a mess, seemed happy, even in the tough anti-gay atmosphere of 50s and God knows what kind of pressure... no drug overdoses, no mental illness, no mess. No Monty Clift, cool as his legend is.

Only scandal involved hurting his dog and that was total bullshit, though I think an offshoot of his gay secret if I remember his book right. Anyway, adore him so thanks for indulging me.

by Anonymousreply 162August 16, 2015 3:32 AM

De Havilland turned 99 last month.

Maureen O'Hara will be 95 tomorrow.

by Anonymousreply 163August 16, 2015 5:13 AM

I'm not sure how long ago they were filmed, but Maureen O'Hara looks spectacular on those interview segments on TCM. I mean drop-dead gorgeous.

The only one outside of Olivia to have a speaking role?

R146, he's looking good again, not that it means he's sober. JRM's fated to be one of those guys who goes on and off the wagon long term. Hopefully, he'll Peter O'Toole it and stick around for awhile.

Nehemiah Persoff

Best remembered for playing Little Bonaparte, the mobster who has Spats killed during the birthday party scene in SOME LIKE IT HOT. Actually, Persoff is about the last actor still living from the film except maybe some of the girls who comprised the band.

For R154. Actually Fabian has aged pretty well. That's him on far left, with his hand on the shoulder of Frankie Avalon, then Chubby Checker, then Bobby Rydel.

Maybe a year or so earlier.

[quote]Buzz Aldrin - he's ancient now and boozed and womanized most of his life -

A very active and fit 85, to be exact, and in a relationship with a woman 1/2 his age. He looks a bit like a hot daddy these days.

Note to self: never tell him he didn't go to the moon to his face.

I just found out Julius La Rosa is still alive. His on-air firing from the Arthur Godfrey Show exposed Godfrey for the phony that he was. This was big showbiz news back then, but now who remembers Julius La Rosa?
