Most of those celebs who come out in a "tabloid exclusive" are pretty much guaranteed to have been forced to do so some days before by said tabloid because the paper has incriminating evidence. They contact the star basically saying "Either you do an exclusive interview with us and we give a big positive spin on it or we run the photos anyway without your input".

The extremely rushed nature of Tom Daley's coming out (going round to all his relatives over the weekend and telling them he's gay and then coming out on youtube that Monday morning) makes me suspect that that was happened to him but he did it his own way - which, if true, makes me respect him so much more. Duncan James from Blue I think came out under similar circumstances and also I think Stephen Gately.

I'm not sure if that's still common practice in the tabloids but I would be very surprised if it wasn't. Basically, anyone who comes out in a tab exclusive out of the blue is pretty much guaranteed to have been forced to do so by the media in question.
