Clinton’s stumbles fray Democratic nerves

Tactical blunders. A strained relationship with the media. An insurgent rival drawing enormous crowds. For Hillary Clinton, the past few weeks of her 2016 presidential campaign have brought back uncomfortable memories of her failed bid in 2008.

Three months in to what should be one of the best funded, best organised campaigns in history, Mrs Clinton has been unable to draw a line under a series of controversies, or to generate the kind of grassroots enthusiasm that will be crucial to maintaining momentum in the gruelling months ahead.

As she prepares to outline her economic vision for the country in a high-profile address on Monday in New York, Mrs Clinton’s team is betting that a rollout of popular, middle-class friendly policies such as paid sick leave and universal prekindergarten provision will help to reset the debate. But her rockier-than-expected start continues to unnerve some long-time allies and Democratic donors, who view the rise of rival Bernie Sanders, the 73-year-old self-proclaimed socialist who has galvanised progressives, as a symptom, rather than a cause, of so-called “Clinton fatigue.”

Not since Nixon has a Presidential candidate hated the media and been more paranoid about the media than Hillary.

Guilty conscience perhaps? She knows that everyone else knows she has a lot to hide.

Yeah, that FINANCIAL TIMES surely is regarded as a respected non-partisan truth-teller.

Get real, OP.

They are to print what FOXNews is to broadcast.

Better source?

Sexism is alive and well in the USA.

I thought Bill was literally staying alive until they return to the WH, and he's supposed to be such a political genius, then again he let Mark Penn fuck up last time.

When we go to war with Russia--and we will be going to war with Russia--I want Hillary as prez because you know she will pick up that red phone and order those nukes and not lose a minutes sleep over it.

by Anonymousreply 5July 11, 2015 4:18 PM

We won't go to war with Russia. We will put the boot on their neck economically (affecting Iran and also Syria) until Putin weakens and the oligarchs take him out.

No "grassroots enthusiasm", yet she's able to raise record breaking levels of grassroots money.

[quote]Clinton's 2015 haul also shattered the $26 million the former first lady raised raised in the first quarter of her failed 2008 bid. That number was made up of $19.1 million for the primary, and $6.9 million for the general election. The aide added that 91% of Clinton's donations were $100 or less, but would not disclose the total number of donations or donors.

Did they really misspell grueling?

Take it from me, the second times the charm. Hil in a landslide.

by Anonymousreply 10July 11, 2015 5:00 PM

She should pretend she doesn't want it. Be all, "Whatever....if .you don't like me fine. I'll keave." People will clamor for her

Can't read the full story because of the paywall. Do they have any actual sourcing on the "frayed Democratic nerves"? My guess is at best it's a few anonymous quotes from "insiders" that are most likely of the washed-up hack variety with old grudges against the Clintons. If there are "frayed nerves," it's because of shallow coverage like this, not because of anything the Clinton campaign is doing or not doing. There is literally nothing that Clinton could do that would ward off stories like this one.

Democrats are just going to have to be ready for months and months of this shit. "Clinton drama" storylines are catnip for the political press. It's going to be exhausting but ultimately it's not going to add up to much.

by Anonymousreply 15July 11, 2015 5:53 PM

R9 And majority of the money her campaign has got is small amounts from private citizens. Many has donated.

by Anonymousreply 16July 11, 2015 6:34 PM

R15 Imagine that. The drama that follows these two everywhere they've gone for 40 years is just media catnip, without an iota of truth behind it.

People who keep bumping threads from 2015-2016 should die of expensive, prolonged and excruciating death.

by Anonymousreply 18August 22, 2020 5:44 AM

r18 Hiding the past doesn't change it

by Anonymousreply 19August 22, 2020 5:56 AM

That stumble cost her the election in my opinion.
