"Reality in Motion" by Tame Impala is really groovy. It's a silky Squelchy synthy song that sounds forward futuristic and completely out of the 70s, but from a live band. It's a fabulous track from their latest album Currents which really, to me is album of the year.

Bloody Lulu. Some of the lyrics on her new album stray a bit too far into "Self help guide" territory, but the voice is true. It's kind of strange to hear one of the Peter (Petra?) Pan's of pop contemplating mortality on songs like "Poor Wayfaring Stranger" and Jimi Hendrix' "Angel". This track is probably the most basic lyrically, but it's also one of the most effective. Love the choral vocals backing her up - reminds me of Martha Wainwright & Co. backing brother Rufus.

[quote] The forgotten Helen Shapiro
Not to me. I just bought the mono "Hits Out!" LP which has that Carole King cover on it. A CD with most of her Pye singles as well. Her falling out of favour with the pop-buying public is a perfect example of how faddish that segment of the industry is - some of her mid 60s recordings have aged much better than some of the hits.
Here she is singing blues at about 15 years old
by Anonymous | reply 133 | September 20, 2015 3:51 PM |
Wow. Three (at least) Helen Shapiro fans. Confession: I never heard of her before someone posted her version of "It's My Party" on DL last year.
by Anonymous | reply 134 | September 20, 2015 3:56 PM |
That version of "It's My Party" is from her "In Nashville" album. One wonders how her career might have gone if the sessions had taken place in New York. The Nashville album is good but if she'd had a Quincy Jones behind her she could have conquered America.
As it went, when she appeared on Ed Sullivan she was forced to sing an only OK Bacharach number "Keep Away from Other Girls" rather than one of her top quality hits like "You Don't Know" or "Tell Me What He Said".
Here's two of her should have been hits from 1964. She adapted very well to the changes in UK Pop sounds but the public wasn't interested.

This low key theme plays in the background of the game's menu screen. I absoloutely love it. I've only ever listened to it when playing the game but it's etched into my memory and sometimes just start playing in my head out of the blue. Like it did today even though it's been over 6 months since I last played the game. I must admit that I used to let the game stay in the menu screen while surfing the web for couple of hours because I loved the music so much. I guess it's time to finally rip the song to my library.

Mostly because it's playing all the time in a PS4 ad. The video for the song sucks, which was one of the reasons I forgot the song after it came out in last May, so here's the PS4 ad instead. It's only a minute long but you get some twink bulge in return.

My Kindle has been reading Amazon's preview of Christopher Lasch's 'The Culture of Narcissism', written in the 70's. The general concept seemed promising, perhaps as some explanation for the GOP's current fascination with an actual clinical narcissist, Donald Trump.
Instead, the author thinks liberals and the country's fragile social safety net are evil and narcisstitic for promoting a culture of caring for others, which would actually be the opposite of what narcissists do, who bully and scapegoat others and lack empathy.
Preposterous, asshole book. I won't be buying it.

'My name is Blurryface and i care what do you think...
Used to play pretend, give each other different names
We would built a rocket ship and then we'd fly it far away
Used to dream of outer space,
but now they're laughing at our face
saying, 'Wake up, you need to get money'...
My name is Blurryface and i care what do you think'

R321, you're asking a lot. You want songs that sound like Aerials or are exactly like it? You probably know already bands that sound similar, like Korn, Linkin Park, Soundgarden, especially Pearl Jam, The Cranberries, Metallica, Alice In Chains etc. Sorry can't really help with songs. Youtube makes it easy to check out songs.
That System of a Down song reminded me of Dio's All The Fools Sailed Away a bit. Old stuff. I loved metal as a kid so it brings back memories.

Now i'm listening to 'Mama You've Been On My Mind' (demo version) sung by George. It's a Bob Dylan song. The demo version with George is excellent.

Zedd - Transmission ft. Logic, X Ambassadors
[italic]We're smart enough to know that no one gets out alive
Hold on to someone close, friend
Cause you're never too young to die
Remember the ghosts before you, and drink to the souls tonight
And don't forget what they told you
You're never too young, you're never too young, never too young to die[/italic]

I'm not actually a Grace Jones fan but at times I get an itch to hear her voice. I just realized that I'd been humming Pull Up To The Bumper for quite some time so I had to go find it on Youtube. BTW, what a shame this classic has only 2.5 million views at Youtube.
