It seems particularly tough for kids to have famous mothers. Movie stardom is all "me, me, me" while Motherhood is all "you, you, you." Lots of famous men also have maladjusted children. But there seems to be a special sort of difficulty for kids whose mothers are too busy seeking public adoration to find time to really raise their children. Fathers are expected to be more absent than mothers. I get the impression Mercedes viewed her son as part of a bigger mistake from her past.
