Different polls show different numbers, though I thought this was interesting:

Nonwhite Individuals More Likely to Identify as LGBT

Nonwhites are more likely than white segments of the U.S. population to identify as LGBT. The survey results show that 4.6% of African-Americans identify as LGBT, along with 4.0% of Hispanics and 4.3% of Asians. The disproportionately higher representation of LGBT status among nonwhite population segments corresponds to the slightly below-average 3.2% of white Americans who identified as LGBT.

I do know that in the 70s, THE ADVOCATE polled its readers about their incomes, then sold this data (based on a smallish, self-selecting population of subscribers) to potential advertisers: Look! Our readers are college-educated, affluent gay (white) men who love opera, gourmet food, first-class travel, and nice shoes! They are rich, rich, rich.

In the absence of other data (because apparently no one was studying gays then), the media ran with this story and thus was born the stereotype of wealthy, leisure-class gay men which persists to this day. Which unfortunately leaves lesbians, working-class gays, and POC out of the equation completely.

Gay men have always made more money than lesbians, Oprah and Ellen notwithstanding.

Yes, a distinct subset of gays are wealthier than their white counterparts. To be clear however we are discussing white "power gays" or otherwise those who are high earning professionals or whatever. Think those with college and maybe post graduate degrees from top universities who are doctors, lawyers, Wall Street/finance, tech bros, etc.... But keep one thing in mind; many of these gay men either as couples or single were more wealthy than straight counterparts because they did *NOT* have children.

Many 'power" or whatever well off white gays are now in the same boat as their straight siblings or peers; they are married with children, or even single parents. As anyone who has them will tell you children cost money, and are an ongoing expense until they're out of college. Ricky Martin, Lance Bass and other gays with tens (or hundreds) of millions can have all the children they want (Ricky Martin in particular seems to be going down the Duggar family route), and their estates won't suffer.

OTOH an "average" well off gay household will be no different than anyone else with children, as such much of what once was excess wealth spent on vacations, clothing, or whatever now is redirected towards children and providing for same.

As for rest of it, no gays on average are not all wealthy or even better off financially than straights. Again only thing that binds so called gay "community" together is their primary attraction for sex or love.

If you requested a demographic search of gay male households for a certain part of Harlem in NYC you'd get Neil Patrick-Harris along with spouse grouped in with Tyrone living a few blocks away who barely earns $40k per year.
