Who remembers the rock musician named Edgar Winter from the 1970's? He is the brother of the late Johnny Winter. He is an albino. His biggest hits were "Frankenstein," "Free Ride," "Tobacco Road," and "Hangin' Around." He was the first musician to strap a keyboard like a guitar player. Edgar Winter is a multi instrumentalist who plays alto sax, keyboards, timbales, drums, etc.
You know that black cube at Astor Place in nyc? In 1981, I stopped to listen to a busker with a keyboard. It was Edgar Winter. I was blown away - there were only like 3 or 4 of us standing there listening.
So that was pretty cool.

Although heroin-addled, brother Johnny Winter was an amazing gutarist.

[quote] He is the brother of the late Johnny Winter. He is an albino.
Both Johnny and Edgar were born with albinism, but Johnny had it to a greater degree than Edgar. Johnny was blind due to his albinism, while Edgar is sighted.
Edgar and Rick Derringer toured for years in Ringo Starr's All Starr Band. I saw them at Radio City on Ringo's 70th birthday. Edgar and Rick rocked the house. After the concert, Paul McCartney came out (a good 5 minutes after the stage had been emptied and gone dark....half the audience had left the theater) and played Birthday -- Ringo came out and played drums. It was the first time they'd played the song together since it was recorded in Abbey Road studios for the White It was pretty awesome.
There were a lot of people there - Nils Lofgren, Little Steven, Jeff Lynne, Olivia Harrison, Joe Walsh, Zak Starkey. Luckily, the crew had been ore warned to turn off any microphone Yoko Ono grabbed.

The Edgar Winter Group - Undercover Man
I must say that Edgar Winter was a record company's nightmare. It was hard for CBS Records to market him properly. Edgar could play so many different styles of music.

Sad that Johnny Winter has passed on. I wish he'd been inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He would have been much more deserving than a lot of the inductees. Oh well, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a joke, anyway. Still it's a shame. He could barely see due to his albinism, and yet he was an incredible guitarist, one of the best. He was also amazing to look at, every inch a rock star. Very unique.

That is so very true, r29. I am just grateful that Edgar Winter is still alive and playing shows every year. Johnny Winter is smiling in his grave right now.

"Slightly OT. Are albinos considered white regardless of their race?"
No. There are African American albinos. It affects people of all ethnic backgrounds. It's a congenital disorder; it has nothing to do with race.

Edgar Winter was a serious musician. Yes he went glam rock for a few years in the early to mid 1970's but he kept on doing music and producing for other artists as well. Then Edgar Winter joined Scientology in the 1980's.
