Coil or Memory Foam Mattress?
Me and my partner went to Macy's today to look at their mattresses. Our mattress has gotten a dent in it and it's really sagging. I was surprised at how expensive all the new mattresses are. They are thousands of dollars!! And then I don't know if I want to get a regular coil mattress or a memory foam mattress.
There are so many choices and they all felt the same yet so wildly different in prices. A $1000 mattress felt no different than a $3000 mattress. Some have a pillowtop and I don't know if that even makes a difference. Also the boxsprings come in 9 inches or 5 inches. Is 9 inches or 5 inches better? Is 5 inches too short? I don't want to feel like I'm sleeping on the floor. Yet with 9 inches I don't want to feel like I'm climbing up to bed. There are also hybrid options where the mattress is part coil and part memory foam. It is all so confusing and overwhelming!

Memory Foam? Do you really want a mattress to remember what you did in bed?

Memory foam = no movement on your side when partner tosses and turns. That is why we are sold on them.

Memory foam. Been sleeping on it since 2010.

Once you go TEMPUR-PEDIC you will NEVER GO Back...firm and terribly comfortable the perfect bed! A bit expensive but you will fall asleep in less than 10 minutes a must have bed and the health benefits start to kick in the second you start sleeping!

If you go memory foam get a good quality one. I bought a cheapy and while it was comfortable it "off gassed" some noxious chemicals and I had to get rid of it in a few days.

If you have back trouble, forget memory foam. It will make it much worse. It's terrible.

I've never slept on a memory foam mattress but I do like pillow tops on coiled mattresses. The height of the box spring is a matter of preference but makes no difference to the mattress that sits on it. If you don't want to feel like you are literally climbing into bed, go for the 5".
All that being said, no one has mentioned sleep number beds. I stayed a week at a hotel that had them and my god. best sleep I've had in years. Fabulous.

Coil is the only way to go, all that other foam crap is just awful. IMHO.

Foam is too hot to sleep on. I need a mattress that is very cool, dissipating body heat fast. I once slept on a horsehair mattress and it was fabulous. But they're now stratospherically expensive. The company (forget the name) that makes Queen Elizabeth's matresses makes them.

I need a new mattress as well so I've been reading up on it. Another blog for research is Old Bed Guy (can't link, just google it) which gives the opposite advice; he prefers coil. It's the foam padding which sags, so get one with minimal padding and buy an easily replaceable topper. Lot of info at that website, the guy sold mattresses for 50 years.
Also note if you are looking at mattress, higher heights are standard nowadays although you can get a lower height, it just costs more (!) but fitted *sheets* are made for the thicker mattresses.

I got a Memory Foam. I didn't have the problems like off-gassing and heat that others have mentioned. My only problem with it, and I've learned to live with it, is you get stuck in one place. And sometimes it can be tough to get out of the bed or roll over because the mattress has formed around you. .

OP it's easy to know when to use "I" or "Me." Say the same sentence without your partner. You'd never say "me went to Macy's."

No need to change your mattress OP. Just get a mattress top. I bought one made out of goose feathers and it cost me less than $300. Very very comfortable.

There are no manufacturing standards in the mattress industry. Each company makes up their own names to describe firmness, for example.

OP, to get the feel for memory foam buy a 5cm thick memory foam mattress topper. They are a good intro to foam. I bought a too firm mattress for my back problem and it was like sleeping on a door, so I got this topper and love it. With a light, duck down comforter there are no problems with overheating at night.

I agree with trying just a mattress topper first. It totally transformed our mattress.

Depends on where you live, OP. If you live in a place that gets hot don't get memory foam. It's also hard to turn over on it. You kind of have to lift yourself up and then flip over. In the winter it's warm though.
I have a bad back and had Beautyrests for years. I won't get them any more, they've changed them so you can't flip them. They tend to sag where you sleep very quickly now. They're not cheap for the quality you get either.
I've been sleeping on a friend's mattress with the built in topper on it, and while it's very nice, I think you're better off buying a separate pad, like a featherbed topper or memory foam if you like it. Then if it wears out or gets too dirty, throw it away. Your bed is still clean. You can also clean featherbeds. You can't clean anything that is sewn to your bed.
Buy a mattress cover. These days I'd think about getting one that is bedbug proof.

You can say "me and my partner," it's racist to say it's incorrect. Grammar is used so you can understand meaning clear without ambiguity, That sentence is clear and leaves no ambiguity so it's correct. You just are a racist if you correct someone, because you think their race's form of English is lesser. There is no lesser form, just different.
Racist.

No, R27.

Now it's racist to speak proper English? I bet there's a lot of black English teachers that wouldn't agree with that.
It's racist to assume black people aren't smart enough to speak standard English, or understand how it's spoken, because they're untrainable.

As you can see, there are many different opinions here. One mattress doesn't work for everyone. People have different needs. If you're an older person you probably won't want to hoist yourself out of a low bed. I know I don't so I get the standard height foundation. If you have back pain or joint pain you have to consider which type of mattress works best for that and it's probably not the same one. I've always heard that memory foam is hot but now they have a gel option that's supposed to cool it down. You have to spend the time to go around and test them out. I read somewhere that you should lie down on the mattress for 15 minutes to get a good idea of long term satisfaction. Of course, if you're young and you can sleep on the floor then you have a lot less to consider. I guess my only advice it to buy from a place that will let you return it if you don't like it. Recently I bought a mattress and was able to return it within 30 days. It cost me $125 but it was well worth it not to be saddled with a mattress that wasn't comfortable for my particular issues. You need to check on that policy before you buy.

I have a SleepNumber and love it. It's not hot, you can have dual firmness adjustment (different from your partner's side) it won't accentuate EMFs and accelerate the growth of cancer (because you are not sleeping on metal/coils), it's easy to move and is lightweight. They make so many more features than when we bought ours over a decade ago, like beating and cooling and more things I don't recall. You can try it for a month (I think) before making a final decision. I never sleep as well on any other kind of bed, no matter how fancy.

Most mattresses, regardless of the brand name, are now made in China. Many mattresses boast a high coil count - but you also need to consider the coil gauge as well. A high coil count yields overall support; a high gauge yields firmness and ant-sag construction. Luxury fabric ticking (like silk and cashmere blends) don't really add anything to the mattress - and often compromise about 5% of the total fiber count. Pillow-tops are luxurious, but once the pillow top begins to sag, there isn't anything you can do - a tight-top mattress with a separate mattress pad can be flipped to extend its life. A mattress that is too firm can be softened with a mattress pad or featherbed; a mattress that is too soft, however, will stay that way. Warranties are usually a gimmick - few, if any people, ever read the warranty to see what is actually covered, and find out too late that the defect isn't covered under the warranty. I would recommend a reputable retailer like Costco over a lengthy warranty.
A simple test - sit on a corner of the mattress with your legs spread open. The corner between your legs should maintain its shape; if it sags, move on.

Costco has gel memory foam mattress pads if you want to try that. They are pretty reasonable in price.
Don't know your age, but when my elderly dad came home from surgery, a physical therapist came to inspect the house to make sure it was safe. He told us to take the bed off the frame and put it on the floor. That way it's lower and more stable, and not as hard for an unsteady person to get in and stay in. Falls out of bed are a common thing for the elderly, apparently. If you think you'll want to put the bed on the floor at some point, get the higher box spring.
Mattresses are so high now that the height of a bed on the floor is about what they used to be on the frame, maybe even higher. At a certain point you're having to get a step stool to get in and out of bed, which isn't good if you're either older or have an injury. Ask yourself if you could get in and out of bed if you broke your ankle or had stitches from surgery. If not, maybe find something lower.
Pets both small and large have a very hard time with high beds as they age, even with a footstool or something at the base. A lower bed to accommodate them might spare you from having to put an ugly ramp near your bed for a beloved pet down the road.

The gel/foam option is totally bogus. That gel is just a non "solution" to keep people coming back to buying foam thinking that the problem has been solved. It hasn't. Gel/foam mattresses are still hot, hot, hot.

That's really all the Coil Mattress sales people have to fight the superiority of the Memory Foam: 1. It's hot 2. It release some kind of dangerous gas.
Sleep on one and you'll never want to go back to coil springs mattresses and dirty dusty box springs.
You don't have to pay for the Tempurpedic brand either. My Memory Foam mattresses (for all my bedrooms) have come from Amazon or Costco.

After having a coil mattress for years, I bought a hybrid bed from Amazon last year, and I don't like it. The foam portion wins out, since I tend to get very hot. I ordered it in firm, but it's a little too soft for my taste, but I guess that's another story. When I move this summer, I plan on dumping the mattress and going back to a coil for my new place.

I'm a warm sleeper and memory foam is just too hot for me, especially when the BF sleeps over at my place. I bought a Sterns and Foster pillow top coil mattress with is perfect. Nice and firm.
With regard to box spring heights, you probably want a shorter box spring for a thicker mattress (such as a pillow top), otherwise the bed may be too high for you. You also need to take into account the height of your headboard and nightstands when considering overall height. Personally I prefer a slightly higher than typical bed because I'm tall.

We got a Leesa Sapira, now called Leesa Hybrid, about five years ago. I have no regrets whatsoever. I’m a big guy (6’6” 250#) and the Sapira shows no signs of sag, which happened with our last coil Beautyrest. I like sleeping in a cold room and cannot abide a hot mattress. The Sapira is not hot. It is fairly firm and the sides are really durable.

We bought a Sealy Hybrid California King bed during a Sam's Club $300 Instant Savings for $1000 sale price. It's a high mattress, so we paired it with the low box springs. It's still high enough that our little dog can barely jump up. She refuses to use the ramp to get on the bed.
We are both big guys, so we chose the appropriate Sealy bed for our weight, and selected a firm mattress, different from the extra firm we gave up. We also liked that it had 'reinforced' edges. It has a 10 year warranty. Less than a year later, we had to have a replacement, as one side's 'reinforced' edge had collapse. We also noticed sagging in the sleep areas, even as we turned the bed monthly per their recommendation. If it happens again, I will get my $1000 refund, and select another model.
We liked the Hybrid concept, but we will chose an extra firm mattress next time. This 'firm' mattress from Sealy is great when your first get the mattress, but quickly softens, and the edge did not hold up.
My brother swears by his Sleep Number bed, but I don't like spending that much on a bed.
