Comedian Paul Mooney has a running joke about that Debbie Allen stole Paula Kelly's career. What are some other examples of someone "stealing" someone else career? Who shred conveniently similar qualities?

Gaga took the heat off of Amy Winehouse's career. Her rise matched almost exactly Amy's sad decline.
One Direction took the heat off of Bieber and Shawn Mendes is doing the same to them post Zayn.
Britney Spears took the heat off of Madge's career post "Music", hence the desperate attempts to stay in the spotlight via staged kissing and that awful duet single. Katy Perry then took the heat off of Britney's post-downward spiral career with a string of hits. But now it looks like Taylor Swift has claimed that spot as her own.
Rihanna stole Beyonce's heat for much of the 90's.

How did Madonna steal Lauper's career? Lauper didn't release her follow-up album TRUE COLORS until 1986, and by then Madonna had released two -- LIKE A VIRGIN (1984), TRUE BLUE (1986) -- both of which were wildly successful and spawned equally successful tours. I think it's more appropriate to say that Madonna left Lauper in the dust, while Lauper inexplicably took a detour into professional wrestling. WTF was all that about?

R77 so true! Had Selena not died, it's very possible that J.Lo would not become what she is today. For one, the SELENA movie was her first ever starring role, and with it she became the highest-paid Latina actress ever ($1 million). She got great reviews and even a Golden Globe nomination, and that role led to her being cast in Steven Soderbergh's OUT OF SIGH opposite George Clooney. Furthermore, she has said that doing SELENA inspired her to seek out her own singing career, which was very successful. Also like Selena, she started her own successful fashion line and perfume. Last but not least, she married Mark Anthony. Granted, Anthony had no connection to Selena, except it was the name that Selena's family were going to give her if she'd been a boy. It's almost as if J.Lo was living Selena's life.

[quote] Reinking was the finalist to play Cassie in the movie of ACL. Damn, what a choice. But having to listen to Reinking's croaking surpassed Reed's horrible performance.
On paper I'd have picked Reinking over Reed just based on the fact that more people knew who she was and she had already taken over for Donna McKechnie, but with the way they cut the dance numbers—seriously, whose idea was it to keep in "Hello 12" but only leave in a few bars?—and with the way the film's script made Cassie seem whiny and unprofessional in a way she wasn't in the play, it barely mattered. The only thing the movie really got right was keeping the gay stuff in, which was a big deal 30 years ago and probably scared off a lot of filmgoers, but the focus on the Zack and Cassie relationship made it heterosexist and undermined the point of the show. It was supposed to be about giving each individual dancer a chance to shine. Still, there were actually a handful respected critics who liked it, mainly Roger Ebert, who admitted "purists won't like it," and it made money overseas. He was right on that point; even the original cast hated it; when they went on [italic]Donahue[/italic], some woman asked them if they were in it, and they all said "no" in unison, the tone of their voice distancing themselves from it. And it's wrong to say that none of them had any on-screen experience; Donna McKechnie was a dancer on [italic]Hullabaloo[/italic] and Wayne Ciliento and Pamela Blair both had non-speaking parts in John Huston's [italic]Annie[/italic]. But even Huston could let individual takes in the dance sequences last long enough to actually show dancers dancing—whenever his cinematographer is not focused on reproductive organs and circus animals—and unlike Huston, Richard Attenborough had already directed a movie musical and acted in another one before ACL. There's plenty of blame to go around for why it doesn't work as an adaptation of the show, but all the other ideas they had for adapting it were so lousy, this seemed like the least worst option at the time. It still could have been executed much better than it was.
Fosse already made a better movie version of [italic]A Chorus Line[/italic] in five minutes with the "On Broadway" sequence in [italic]All That Jazz[/italic]. It's ironic that his daughter is in ACL.

J.Lo is totally different from Selena. One was a singer, the other is an actress who "sings" sometimes. Selena was unknown in America, outside of the Mexican-American community. I guess she might have broken in to the English-speaking market in a big way, but that's debatable
by Anonymous | reply 104 | June 30, 2015 8:27 PM |
R104 have you been following J.Lo's career? She started out as an actress and only ventured into a singing career after making SELENA in 1997. When she put out her first album, ON THE SIX, in 1999, her acting career took a back seat to her fledgling music career. Yes, she continued making films here and there, often resulting in hit rom-coms (THE WEDDING PLANNER, MAID IN MANHATTAN), but her music was her main priority. She became a singer who acted sometimes.
Furthermore, Selena WAS expected to make it big in the American mainstream. She wasn't just a rising young star who died before she could cross over. That's why her death was a blow, because she had a lot riding on her success. In the 1990s there were no significant Latin singers in America with the possible exception of Gloria Estefan, but she was nearing 40 and was never as huge as Madonna, Mariah, or Whitney. There weren't even any notable Latin actors. That's why you had movies like HOUSE OF THE SPIRITS and THE PEREZ FAMILY cast with Anglo actors playing Latin Americans/Cubans. Anyway, Selena was expected to become the next big thing in music, this time for the Hispanic-Americans. Instead, her death and massive coverage of it instead led to the Latin Explosion/Invasion of the late '90s with J.Lo leading the way partly because she broke down barriers by becoming the first Latina to get a $1 million paycheck for the SELENA movie.

Pat Benatar and Debbie Harry have both been on-record about Madonna 'stealing' their careers. Pat said something to the effect of, Now I don't have to wear leotards and be sexy anymore. Debbie gave the hilarious quote, when told that Madonna said Debbie was a big influence on her, "That's nice, but a check would be nicer". Cyndi and Madge had two different trajectories, two different audiences, etc. When they both came out, they were put into competition with each other by the media, and everyone was betting on Cyndi be in it for the long haul, and Madge would soon disappear.

R141, that's interesting. I didn't know any of that. What about Annie Lennox? Did the press pit her against Madonna? Was she predicted to last when she first arrived?
One of my regrets about that era of pop is that Canadian alt rocker Lisa Dalbello never cracked the U.S. market (Queensryche and Heart covered her songs though). She was allegedly a pivotal influence on Alanis, if she had broken through herself, I think a lot of the pop divas like Madonna, Lennox, Janet Jackson, would have responded and pushed their own sound into much edgier, grittier territory. (She also wrote some remarkable songs for male artists, like Don't Get Mad Get Even for the band Helix and The Way to Your Heart for Julian Lennon, Tove Lo once said it's much harder for her to write for male than female artists, because men often reject her lyrics as too soft and girlie sounding, but Dalbello never had that problem at all).
