Health/Medical Thread: Constipation causes other illnesses
— Mr. Monastyrsky, is constipation dangerous for my health?
— Yes, it is, and for the following reasons:
● Constipation predisposes you to all major colorectal disorders starting with enlarged hemorrhoids and ending up with colorectal cancer. The reasons aren‘t difficult to understand — your colon was designed by nature to hold a few pounds of feces in transit. When a person gets constipated, the colon may be holding 10, 20 or more lbs. The weight by itself isn‘t the problem, but the volume is – large, heavy stools enlarge and stretch out the colon, irritate the colon mucosa, harm the anal canal, and may produce toxins related to fermentation and rotting.
● Constipation is one of the symptoms of disbacteriosis — a condition where the normal, intestinal flora is dead and missing. When alive, this flora performs several, important functions. First, it protects the colon itself from any inflammation-causing pathogens. Second, it produces essential B-vitamins and vitamin K, responsible for blood clotting. Third, it governs primary immunity. And fourth — bacteria form stools, and keep them soft and moist. When all of these functions are compromised, you aren‘t likely to enjoy a long and healthy life!

I believe that constipation causes gallbladder issues, pancreas issues, obesity issues, fatigue, ulcers, of course IBS, IBD, crohn's, etc

High quality live probiotics taken several times a day according to directions is very effective. Plus, it's also better to shit in a squatting position so you have a complete evacuation, which also helps to end constipation. The thing is, in the U.S. where I Iive most homes don't have squat toilets. So you have to put a disposable container on the floor and position yourself over it or buy the squat potty seat that attaches to the toilet. You have to remove everything from the waist down.... because if you don't, you'll wish you did. That means that you can only do this at home, not in a public restroom.
Eating a real healthy diet, juicing, drinking 8 oz of distilled water every other hour, taking a 30 minute power-walk every day, plus high-quality daily probiotics, and squatting to shit, all combined, cleared up everything (and not just the constipation) for me.

R4, Can you give a little more info about your diet and the brand of probiotic you are using and how many times a day? I am trying to help my teenage daughter with this and mostly been attacking it w a twice-daily combo of miralax, citrucel and benefiber. I'd like to get her off that eventually--at least the miralax.

Making your own kefir is easy with free or low cost kefir grains. I have a strainer/funnel combo in stainless made in Germany that I bought from amazon. It makes making kefir a breeze. Basically, you throw in 1 spoonful of kefir into a jar (preferably glass) and put in milk. I do mine with heavy whipping cream and milk because homemade kefir of any type is SOUR and thin. I can't say the heavy whipping cream does anything but thicken it up a bit because it's still sour. Then I use powdered ranch dressing in it to drink after I've strained it into another glass jar. I love Ranch dressing and this is the perfect way to have it, yes I drink it like that. I also use kefir (without ranch) in potatoes instead of buttermilk, I'm going to use plain kefir tonight in my banana bread instead of sour cream, I put it on salads (as ranch dressing). R5 have you tried making kefir? (Just saw your post as I was writing this).

Forgot to add - kefir makes me go, probably 4x a day. It's great stuff. Another thing I'm doing daily is moringa. That helps with pain (which I have), obesity (kefir helps this too), and going several x a day.

R5 Sure, no problem. For now, what you are doing will not be effective in the long run - it's band-aid approach. I will answer tomorrow during my lunch hour. It's not hard, but it's a bit too involved for me to go into right now. It is not a one size fits all. Different probiotics address different issues.
For now there are two main probiotics in terms of the Genus; Lactobacillus (L.) and also Bifidobacterium (B.)... they are the two main Genus of probiotics. I'll let you know the probiotic Species, as well as the diet tomorrow, which really isn't a diet, it's a nutritional program b/c it's not about calories, it's about nutrients. it's not confusing. I just need to know the following and can recommend a specific probiotic and brand.
I will need to know her age, general health, if the problem is constipation, and I also need to know if she has a problem with hives/welts at times because the probiotics species & strains each address different issues and some are histamine releasing which you may not want.
BTW, the two previous posts are not mine.

This is hilariously untrue.

[quote] I'd like to get her off that eventually--at least the miralax.
It's actually the other two you should get her off because miralax is the most beneficial and is now the first choice for treatment of constipation. You don't need the other two. They both cause more gas than miralax does.
Miralax and drink lots of water. People with chronic constipation should pay very close attention to their fluid intake.
Don't listen to old people who say, "You can't take Miralx every day! You'll become dependent on laxatives!" That's old school. If someone needs miralax every day, so what? It comes in travel packets, so it's not like you aren't going to be able to take it when you're away from home. Better to take a laxative every day than have constipation even periodically.
Do I work for Miralax? I wish. My family has something that the medical establishment hasn't discovered yet. Me, my mother, three aunts, an uncle and my grandfather have all had bowel obstructions and perforations. I take miralax every day now because I prefer it to having a colostomy bag. And it works.
I also drink lots of water, have soup/broth with meals and use other ways to increase my fluid intake. My grandfather ate an all natural diet -- because there was nothing else. He grew up on a farm. Plenty of vegetables, lots of barley, milk from a cow in the diet. He still had to have a temporary colostomy bag while his bowel healed from surgery. So much for an all-natural diet preventing bowel problems. Sadly, my best friend's sister is a homeopath who has eaten nothing but natural, organic, locally grown stuff for over 20 years and she has been diagnosed with stage IV colorectal cancer. The bowel is little understood. It's not glamorous like neurosurgery or open heart surgery, so it doesn't get a lot of research money.

Yeah, I get constipated when I don't eat enough veggies/fiber. Also, when I poop, I notice white mucus. My dad died from colon cancer.

Who shits 3-4 times a day? I do one big shit every morning at 9.30am, after my second coffee. Fortunately I work from home so I don't have to worry about getting it out before I leave for the office.

So, you know how when you own a home and you have to dump liquid bacteria solution into your sink and toilet 1x/2months to keep the septic system working correctly? Same.

2x per day is ideal, but at least (minimum) 1x per day is okay.
Not pooping every single day (full evacuation) over time, will eventually (sooner than later) lead to health problems, and some quite serious.
That's what I was told by 3 different doctors.

Funny if I eat soup or fruit the night before it's not guaranteed I'll poop in the morning. But if I eat a big cheese croissant, man, I'll poop two hours after and the next morning!

Digestive problems/ constipation can also be the result of vitamin B 12 deficiency. If you're a vegan , have thyroid issues/autoimmune disorders or take medication for acid reflux/diabetes (particularly Metformin) you should have your B 12 levels monitored regularly.

Orthoectics are overly concerned with this stuff. The whole process of eating and eliminating repels them and they can't stop obsessing about it, and inventing illnesses they'll get if they don't get that horrible disgusting food out of their bodies as quickly as possible.
Some of this stuff could have been written by Gwynneth herself!

There was a storyline on that show "Huff" about a guy who wouldn't defecate.
r26, I'm the same way. And, if I need to, I eat a slice of greasy cheese pizza and, the next day, I'm clean as a whistle.
How long before this thread is taken down?

Have you ever seen the message forums for the crazy people who have delusions of having parasites in their poop? They post photos of normal looking poop and point arrows at where the parasites are supposed to be.
They all go to multiple doctors before they give up on "western medicine" for not being able to see invisible parasites. (There is something called stool of ova & parasites that checks for parasites and their eggs. If you continually come up empty, even an electron microscope won't find your invisible parasites). They take all kinds of concoctions and cleanses and enemas and go through fasts and god knows what else. I would feel sorry for them, but they waste time in clinics and doctor's offices and get nasty when you won't be delusional with them.
No matter what concoctions and cleanses they use, the parasites always "come back."

No. My septic system works fine and I don't dump bacteria in there at all, let alone every month or so.

R27 I used to have hyperthyroidism, I guess I still have but it's controlled and I pooped 4 or 5x, no kidding. The only good thing was the weight loss. I know that people with hypothyroidism gains weight and constipates more.
I have a friend who is very thin, she eats healthy, loves veggies (unlike me) but she always has a hard time to make #2 (I heard very thin people can have digestive issues, maybe it's her case). But if she eats lots of fruit (prunes, cherries...) she will be clean by the morning.

Do you people not know that Elvis died "straining at the stool"?
You bet your ass that constipation is a huge issue as you get older. They give you medicine to soften the stool. I remember that as one of my dad's meds and didn't know why you'd need medicine for that. Elvis's desth scared the shit out of me and I never hold my breath when straining. I try to breathe normally. LOL! But that probably does as much good as jumping off the floor in a plummeting elevator.

Most in my immediate family have issues with constipation. My mother only had a bowel movement once every week or two. I've gone three weeks without one, no big deal. We're not all built the same.
