Charm, vibe, nightlife, cultural scene, architecture, food, denizen hotness -- all things considered, which of the European metropoles is your favorite?
Favorite European metropolis
by Anonymous | reply 68 | December 14, 2020 1:48 AM |
Apart from London, Paris and Berlin, there are no real metropolis-sized cities in Europe.
Let's keep it that way..
by Anonymous | reply 1 | June 16, 2015 2:46 PM |
European snob at r1 has never heard of Moscow or Istanbul, apparently.
Paris city limits are comparatively small. Many people live intra muros, but it's still not a vast city, even if it feels that way.
Berlin & London are much bigger than Paris, not to mention cities like Milan or Madrid or Warsaw.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | June 16, 2015 2:52 PM |
I lived in amsterdam for years so. . . .
by Anonymous | reply 3 | June 16, 2015 3:01 PM |
Madrid. Love it. Beautiful, men are stunning and gay scene hot.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | June 16, 2015 3:08 PM |
Agree with R4. I would have said Madrid, like it much better than the tourist trap of Barcelona.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | June 16, 2015 3:11 PM |
It's a toss-up between Londonstan and Parisstan. Although Stockholmstan and Amsterdamstan are coming along nicely.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | June 16, 2015 3:14 PM |
Shut up, racist.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | June 16, 2015 3:20 PM |
Apparently I can't vote. Is this only for paying customers anymore?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | June 16, 2015 3:21 PM |
Its a system based on your number of visits R8. So if you clear your cookies or are on a new device/browser then it looks like it is your first visit to the DL.
(Of course if you actually pay for this place you can login at any point).

Prague.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | June 16, 2015 4:01 PM |
Madrid is only slightly smaller than Berlin - why is it not on your list, OP?
by Anonymous | reply 11 | June 16, 2015 6:25 PM |
Polls without an "other" category are fascist.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | June 16, 2015 6:28 PM |
Went to Berlin the first time ever recently. WOW!
by Anonymous | reply 13 | June 16, 2015 6:36 PM |
r6 go away storm front.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | June 16, 2015 6:38 PM |
I can post but not vote. Odd, to say the least. Maybe there are false votes when people are just scrolling by and click on it and then it won't let them vote.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | June 16, 2015 7:26 PM |
I lived in Berlin for 8 years and loved it very much, but it is lacking in the charm and beauty departments. I also love London, Prague, and Edinburgh for very different reasons. Barcelona and Rome too. It's impossible to pick, really.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | June 16, 2015 7:28 PM |
I'll get lots of Dataloungers are fans of the Lenny & Carsten from the Berlin soap opera GZSZ

R17 fake gay couple in a FAKE Berlin
by Anonymous | reply 18 | June 16, 2015 7:35 PM |
London is turning into an overcrowded, third world shithole and the British only have themselves to blame for allowing it to happen.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | June 16, 2015 7:42 PM |
British men are the easiest lays. You can still get a wank in a gentlemen's toilet quite easily.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | June 16, 2015 7:45 PM |
I voted for Lisbon but it didn't record.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | June 16, 2015 7:55 PM |
Me too, R21. The poll must be rigged, otherwise Lisbon would have more votes.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | June 16, 2015 8:05 PM |
That's funny, R6, because stan is also a Swedish word meaning city or town.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | June 16, 2015 8:06 PM |
Because Madrid sucks, R11. Ahora or no Ahora. Although it can only go uphill.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | June 16, 2015 8:07 PM |
God Bless and keep America...far away from us
by Anonymous | reply 25 | June 16, 2015 8:14 PM |
Madrid, hands down.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | June 16, 2015 8:20 PM |
Technically, the British Isles are not part of Europe. It's a common mistake, though, like pronouncing the "t" in often.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | June 16, 2015 8:24 PM |
Technically, the British Isles are not a continent, so they are very much part of Europe.
No-one would suggest Sri Lanka or Japan are not "part of Asia", just because they're island nations.
What a silly thing to say...
by Anonymous | reply 28 | June 16, 2015 8:26 PM |
r13, what about Berlin in particular did you like?
by Anonymous | reply 29 | June 16, 2015 8:28 PM |
So many are really fun in different ways. I was really into Istanbul, Dubrovnik, Prague and, of course Paris. Haven't been to Barcelona in many years. Enjoyed all!
by Anonymous | reply 30 | June 16, 2015 8:29 PM |
R28, the British isles are close to the European continent but not part of them.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | June 16, 2015 8:33 PM |
Wtf are you talking about R31? Yes the British Isles are not part of continental Europe as they are an island but they are still a European country. Just like Iceland is also an island that is part of Europe (and it is even further away from mainland). This is not something under debate.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | June 16, 2015 8:35 PM |
r31, then Japan is close to the Asian continent but not part of them (sic).
And Long Island is close the US but not part of them (sic).
by Anonymous | reply 33 | June 16, 2015 8:35 PM |
Berlin is the easiest, most interesting of all. I was there as the Wall was coming down in late '89 into '90. And then there again about 4 years ago. It has such a great gay scene, galleries, museums, restaurants, shopping, and did I mention gay nightlife?
by Anonymous | reply 34 | June 16, 2015 8:35 PM |
r27 and r31 want to make a trolling spectacle of their idiocy, and... they've succeeded!
by Anonymous | reply 35 | June 16, 2015 8:37 PM |
Madrid is my latest favorite city in Europe. Have visited twice in the last six months. It's a great base from which to explore Toledo, Segovia, etc. Have no interest in Barcelona from what I've heard of the place, tourist trap etc. Also love Seville, but it's much smaller.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | June 16, 2015 8:38 PM |
R27 and R31 are the same person. And yes, he's a complete imbecile. I guess going by his logic Taiwan is not part of Asia.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | June 16, 2015 8:39 PM |
[quote] Apparently I can't vote. Is this only for paying customers anymore?
R8, why did you use "anymore" at the end of that sentence? What purpose does it serve?
by Anonymous | reply 38 | June 16, 2015 10:51 PM |
Its a toss up between Paris and Vienna.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | June 16, 2015 11:28 PM |
Barcelona but no Madrid? Fail. No Moscow, Munich, Milan, Zurich? No Istanbul, one of the few mega cities?
No Hamburg? Hamburg buried Berlin for decades!!!!!
OP has never been to any of these cities me thinks.
I mean, Stockholm! Stockholm? Seriously?
No Dublin. Fuck this.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | June 16, 2015 11:53 PM |
R16 I liked your picks - Berlin is fun but you're right, not as pretty as other comparable cities, London is a great destination for any sort of thing you like whether it's culture or shopping or architecture or nightlife, whatever floats your boat you'll find it there but the most beautiful city I've ever seen hands down it's Edinburgh. Good nightlife too and culture central if that's your thing.
I loved Granada too, it was like being in a fairy tale.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | June 17, 2015 12:10 AM |
More important--which one has the sluttiest, least picky gays on Grindr?
by Anonymous | reply 42 | June 17, 2015 12:40 AM |
London and paris have the least choosy men. Or big enough variety that someone will choose me!
by Anonymous | reply 43 | June 17, 2015 12:50 AM |
Berlin is the fisting capital of the world.
And don't forget that it's filled with Germans and those bastards started not one, but two World Wars.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | June 17, 2015 1:08 AM |
Germans are the kinkiest fucking people on the planet (funny because their society is sort of rigid and uptight, I guess that is why though). It is true, if you fucking want to go wild you should head to Berlin.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | June 17, 2015 1:12 AM |
Honestly from what I have heard (never been there), Manchester is one of the cities it is easy for a gay guy to be the sluttiest. I guess it goes along with what R20 said, British men can be very easy lays.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | June 17, 2015 1:19 AM |
Another write in for Madrid!!!!
by Anonymous | reply 48 | June 17, 2015 1:23 AM |
La grande bellezza ecco Roma non basta una vita.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | June 17, 2015 1:26 AM |
r40, I know those cities well.
Zurich is not a metropolis, and I decided not more than one city per country - which left out Milan, Madrid, Munich and Hamburg. Berlin has overtaken them all, anyway, when it comes to "happening". Sorry.
Istanbul, meanwhile, is partly located in Asia, and not eligible imo.
And Moscow: honey, it's on the list! Go ahead and vote for it, it you think it's the true gem of Europe.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | June 17, 2015 12:09 PM |
Istanbul is even more conservative Muslim. Why bother?
by Anonymous | reply 51 | June 17, 2015 12:17 PM |
Until a few years ago, Athens would definitely have been in the running. Shame on you all for allowing a spot of trouble to erase it from your mental map. I mean, Kiev I can understand, but Athens? Come on!
I'm a little surprised that you all fall into line with Berlin to represent Germany, when other German cities really have such a good record on gay life. I mean Koln had the gay games, and some say Dusseldorf has the most gays per capita.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | June 18, 2015 12:27 AM |
r52, you're mixing up Düsseldorf with Cologne (Köln). The former is kind of conservative, while the latter is widely known as the gay capital of Germany.
Berlin is hard on its heels, though.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | June 18, 2015 12:31 AM |
Frankfurt also very gay with many direct flights.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | June 18, 2015 12:53 AM |
The service people aren't very nice, but I still like Vienna
by Anonymous | reply 55 | June 18, 2015 12:58 AM |
Buenos Aires.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | June 18, 2015 4:00 AM |
R57 where do you think Buenos Aires is located? Just curious.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | June 18, 2015 11:46 AM |
Vienna? Seriously? Are you posting from the 19th century?
by Anonymous | reply 59 | June 18, 2015 11:56 AM |
Fake gay couple in fake Berlin? Oh, really, you think I believe soap opera couples are not fictional? Actually, your statement is only partly true. Soap operas are not cutting edge, so for gay storylines to appear in them is certainly a way to measure a culture's progress. True, most storylines seem like gays facing issues of the 70s and 80s but most soap watchers would be older, wouldn't they? And if Euro storylines often have a prole affectation, this is probably more realistic, relatively speaking, than the midweestern metropolises of American soap operas, consisting entirely of feuding billionaire clans and extra stylish women.
The Lisbon entry
by Anonymous | reply 60 | June 18, 2015 5:31 PM |
R56 Vicenza is hardly a metropolis.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | June 18, 2015 6:08 PM |
Another vote for Lisbon. Based on livability.
Could be dupe post.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | June 18, 2015 6:15 PM |
Bavaria, bitches!
by Anonymous | reply 63 | June 18, 2015 7:39 PM |
R58, Buenos Aires is a European metropolis that happens to be located in South America, or so the Argentinians would have one believe.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | June 18, 2015 9:42 PM |
R64. Having been to Buenos Aires, I would have to agree with the Argentinians for the most part.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | June 19, 2015 2:21 AM |
Let's not get cute R64. It's not what OP asked.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | December 14, 2020 1:14 AM |
Paris and Vienna to me. Been to London a couple of times and I hated the city, the rubbish everywhere, the air pollution, the rude and snug Brits.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | December 14, 2020 1:41 AM |
Skopje and Tirana tie for me. I really love Prishtina too, but it’s not a metropolis.
Budapest, Belgrade, Helsinki and Sofia create a solid second tier.
