Movies You Can Sleep Through Over and Over Again

Inspired by the...oh hell, the vodka.

I'll offer my top choices:

Dances With Wolves Braveheart All of the LOTR movies

I'm sure I could think of more if I hadn't mixed that last drink. Please feel free to help me out.

by Anonymousreply 101August 22, 2018 9:11 PM

Matrix 3.

by Anonymousreply 1May 9, 2015 6:57 AM

Interstellar... well, if you turn the sound down, because otherwise it's too damn LOUD to sleep through.

by Anonymousreply 2May 9, 2015 7:07 AM

Oh, God, thank you. Someone else who thinks LOTR movies are boring. I could barely sit through part of the first one on TV and couldn't believe they had made more. The reaction I get for this from grown men, even middle-aged men, is unbelievable.

by Anonymousreply 3May 9, 2015 8:02 AM

-- The English Patient

-- Chocolat

-- Anything starring Sissy Spacek

by Anonymousreply 4May 9, 2015 8:09 AM

All of the Godfather movies.

All "mob" movies in general with the exception of Goodfellas. That one I love. I think it had a lot to do with the soundtrack.

by Anonymousreply 5May 9, 2015 8:12 AM

I have never been able to watch more than 30 minutes of any of the LOTR or the Hobbit movies without falling asleep.

My brother has the same thing happen when he's tried to watch ... crap I forgot the name of the movies ... it's the sparkly vampire movies, the ones with the nutso fans?

by Anonymousreply 6May 9, 2015 8:29 AM

The New World (Terrence Malick)

I have fallen asleep on that movie multiple times.

by Anonymousreply 7May 9, 2015 8:35 AM

2001. Never seen the ending or even the middle. What happens?

by Anonymousreply 8May 9, 2015 8:49 AM

R6 the sparkly movies are indeed those pathetic movies with the nutso fans...search rpatz if you really dare to be amused, yet horrified.

R8 I saw the beginning as well. We need some one to fill us in on the rest, obviously.

by Anonymousreply 9May 9, 2015 9:32 AM

A River Runs Through It (-alt. title: Had to Sit Through It)

by Anonymousreply 10May 9, 2015 10:20 AM

Akira Kurosawa's "Ran", three times so far.

by Anonymousreply 11May 9, 2015 11:36 AM

Believe it or not - Star Wars.

Saw it when I was young, and I remember saying I would have napped through it if it weren't so fucking loud.

by Anonymousreply 12May 9, 2015 12:39 PM

LOTR!!!

I skipped all the theatrical releases and decided I would watch the first three on TV as a marathon. Little did I know that they would function like an Ambien/Valium cocktail for me.

I did watch all three, but it took about 22 viewing sessions, each one interrupted by drowsiness or outright unconsiousness.

For the last month I've tried to stream Breaking Bad. My app will play a series back to back automatically so I wake up in the morning 6 or 7 episodes in. I always fall asleep during the first episode. I think it's just a boring show that was overhyped.

by Anonymousreply 14May 9, 2015 1:12 PM

Remains Of The Day. Brilliant acting but painful to watch.

by Anonymousreply 15May 9, 2015 5:37 PM

Tarkovsky's "Solaris"

by Anonymousreply 16May 9, 2015 7:03 PM

Most David Lean movies, while magnificently shot, are cinematic Ambien to me. And I love old movies.

Surprisingly, CASABLANCA doesn't hold up so well for me. I find it really talky and slow and cannot stay awake through it anymore.

Another vote for 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY.

THE LIFE ACQUATIC. Haven't made it through once, after repeated efforts.

by Anonymousreply 17May 9, 2015 7:22 PM

The most recent Spiderman movie. It was a struggle to stay awake during that mess of a movie. Andrew Garfield was just a complete cipher.

by Anonymousreply 18May 9, 2015 7:53 PM

Fantasia

by Anonymousreply 19May 9, 2015 8:03 PM

Snow White and the Huntsman. In fact I did just that.

by Anonymousreply 20May 9, 2015 8:12 PM

You've Got Mail and Killing Them Softly.

by Anonymousreply 21May 9, 2015 8:15 PM

Out Of Africa. We tried to watch it 5 times but never got through the ending.

by Anonymousreply 22May 9, 2015 8:15 PM

To Wong Foo, Mermaids, and the entire Matrix trilogy.

by Anonymousreply 23May 9, 2015 8:16 PM

The first Star Wars Movie. Couldn't get through it. Never went back for more.

by Anonymousreply 24May 9, 2015 8:16 PM

Heaven's Gate, Dances with Wolves

by Anonymousreply 25May 9, 2015 8:20 PM

"Van Helsing"

I love Hugh Jackman, and I tend to like monster movies, special effects movies, and summer pop-corn movies.

However, this movie was so inert, so boring, that to this day it's the only movie I've ever fallen asleep at while in the movie theater.

by Anonymousreply 26May 9, 2015 8:32 PM

Fantasia.

by Anonymousreply 27May 9, 2015 8:36 PM

Every movie mentioned here affects me the same way. Now that I've recovered from last nights hangover I can offer up a couple more that work like Ambien:

The Last of the Mohicans

Alexander

Apocalypse Now

by Anonymousreply 28May 9, 2015 9:29 PM

The English Patient and pretty much every other film with an orange filter. Except China Town.

by Anonymousreply 29May 9, 2015 9:34 PM

Eyes Wide Shut

by Anonymousreply 30May 9, 2015 10:00 PM

Satantango

by Anonymousreply 31May 9, 2015 10:07 PM

I went to see THE ENGLISH PATIENT in theaters in early '97 and promptly fell asleep. When I woke up two hours later, I remember feeling annoyed that it was STILL on! I tried to watch it three years later when it was on TV, but I fell asleep once again. Haven't given it a third try in the 15 years since.

by Anonymousreply 32May 9, 2015 10:28 PM

Any movie based on a comic book.

And anyone over 30 attending one of those movies needs to get their head examined.

by Anonymousreply 33May 10, 2015 12:00 AM

A friend of mine came over the other day to help me install a ceiling fan, and we got to talking about movies. He said that Dances With Wolves was one of his all time favorites. When I replied, quite simply, that I hated it, he almost let go of the fan, which would have been the end of me as I was standing right underneath it at the time.

Apparently I committed sacrilege. And when I realized how horrified he was I couldn't stop laughing.

As the day wore on the list grew even longer (John Wayne, American Sniper...you get the idea), so that by the end we just had to agree to disagree on pretty much everything.

by Anonymousreply 34May 10, 2015 12:22 AM

Eyes Wide Shut and the English Patient.

by Anonymousreply 35May 10, 2015 12:25 AM

A Space Odysssey

by Anonymousreply 36May 10, 2015 1:32 AM

Everything already mentioned, except for Breaking Bad (fair enough, the first episodes are kind of slow, but it picks up BIG time). I'd watch BB on repeat over any of these tedious, overblown films.

I've never made it through Chinatown without dozing off. Last of the Mohicans or any other boring Hollywoodized historical epic. Anything by Malick, Nolan and Kubrick (except for A Clockwork Orange). I also find the Coen brothers' films very boring for all of the hype.

by Anonymousreply 37May 10, 2015 1:47 AM

Far and Away - I've slept through it a half dozen times.

by Anonymousreply 38May 10, 2015 2:36 AM

R38 you mean the movie with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman?

by Anonymousreply 39May 10, 2015 2:39 AM

Anything starring Jack Nickolson., Babs Streisand (her big nose fills up 50% of the screen, her ego fills out the remaining 50%).

by Anonymousreply 40May 10, 2015 2:49 AM

Yes, R39, that's the one.

It's cinematic Ambien to me.

by Anonymousreply 41May 10, 2015 3:13 AM

I fell asleep during LOTR, too... in the theater.

by Anonymousreply 42May 10, 2015 3:16 AM

LOTR is unwatchable.

by Anonymousreply 43May 10, 2015 3:20 AM

A hundred years ago, a friend and I went to see "Alan Quartermaine and the Lost City of Gold" starring DL fave Richard Chamberlain and Sharon Stone. My friend kept falling asleep, waking up 20 minutes later and thinking it had only been a second. It was the same scene over and over again. Explosion, run, chase, run some more. Next.

I felt sorry for Richard Chamberlain.

by Anonymousreply 44May 10, 2015 3:27 AM

[quote]A hundred years ago, a friend and I went to see "Alan Quartermaine and the Lost City of Gold" starring DL fave Richard Chamberlain and Sharon Stone.

Are you bad at math? That movie came out in 1987. That's hardly 100 years ago. More like 28.

by Anonymousreply 45May 10, 2015 3:32 AM

Boyhood just a big hunk of aimless humdrum it's like a trial with no murder no hung bailiff no high-strung witness it's just dull people some of them actors some not all of them struggling with the long limp bloodless content, I felt improperly fucked by the arrogant vacancy of it. I became just another victim walking out of the theater rubbing my sore ass. The Master also tortured my patience and robbed me of my time. Left Birdman after 15 minutes, I'm older now so time is more precious I won't let Birdman fully fuck me. Of course Malick tops the self-indulgent list and that's the only sad thing he tops. Sofia Coppola has never taken a shit, Daddy unwrapped all the tootsie rolls and told her she never has to.

by Anonymousreply 46May 10, 2015 3:36 AM

I fell asleep during the English Patient. I woke up and they were in a cave. I used to have such a hard-on for Rafe.

by Anonymousreply 47May 10, 2015 3:37 AM

Dances With Wolves is actually one that I have watched over and over. Open Range, too.

Stnaley Kubrick movies, The Graduate, Star Wars on the other hand...zzzzzzzz

by Anonymousreply 48May 10, 2015 3:39 AM

Oh for fuck's sake.

No, dumb cunt at R45, I'm not "bad at math" it's just an expression.

by Anonymousreply 49May 10, 2015 3:42 AM

Run Lola Run was like that for me. I kept dozing off and waking up and every time I awakened Lola was running from someone. I still don't know why she was running, because I was asleep during that sequence.

by Anonymousreply 50May 10, 2015 3:42 AM

Gawd damn, those last three Star Wars pics, and all three LOTR movies were SO FUCKING DULL!

Never again!

by Anonymousreply 51May 10, 2015 3:46 AM

Another vote for The English Patient and Babel - most boring movie ever made.

by Anonymousreply 52May 10, 2015 3:50 AM

My movie Fraternity Row is really quite good.

by Anonymousreply 53May 10, 2015 3:51 AM

The Exorcist 2: The Heretic. Boring as hell.

The Last Starfighter.

Far and Away. Just about any Tammy movie that's long is sleep inducing.

My Best Friend's Wedding. I'd about had it with Julia Roberts by then.

Lost in Translation. Why was this even made?

I nodded several times in Interstellar. But that annoying AnnE kept me awake!

by Anonymousreply 54May 10, 2015 3:56 AM

[quote]I nodded several times in Interstellar. But that annoying AnnE kept me awake!

Yeah, she was the only good thing in that dreck.

by Anonymousreply 55May 10, 2015 4:00 AM

Aronofsky's "The Fountain"

"A Serbian Movie"

"To Kill Mockingbird"

"Tender Mercies"

by Anonymousreply 56May 10, 2015 4:06 AM

R33 = Judgy McJudgerson

by Anonymousreply 57May 10, 2015 4:33 AM

I'm not a big comic book or comic book movie fan. I don't much care for fantasy or sci-fi either. I am over 30 and have seen quite a few of these films over the years. A few of them have been a lot of fun.

Having fun at the movies isn't a hanging offence, R33.

by Anonymousreply 58May 10, 2015 6:54 AM

But comic book movies *aren't* fun, R58.

by Anonymousreply 59May 10, 2015 7:12 AM

Boyhood owns this thread.

by Anonymousreply 60May 10, 2015 8:41 AM

I fell asleep during one of the LOTR movies in the cinema. It was the only one of the trilogy that I went to see and my friends were very annoyed, furious and offended that I found it boring and sleep-inducing. After the movie was over they spent over an hour going on and on about what greats work of art and literature the LOTR books and films were, and I wanted to fall asleep again.

by Anonymousreply 61May 10, 2015 9:00 AM

You want to know real hell? I had to READ that trilogy over the month of January to fulfill some graduation requirements.

I know what HELL IS!!!!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 62May 10, 2015 9:03 AM

R59, are you our resident short-bus rider on the loose again? You'll never get a husband if you keep acting like such a dumb cunt, dear.

by Anonymousreply 63May 10, 2015 9:06 AM

R62, I condole you, but that's weird. What sort of program requires LOtR to graduate?

by Anonymousreply 64May 10, 2015 9:08 AM

^^^ 10th grade, of course.

by Anonymousreply 65May 10, 2015 9:11 AM

The English Patient

by Anonymousreply 66May 10, 2015 9:54 AM

THE ENGLISH PATIENT

by Anonymousreply 67May 10, 2015 10:03 AM

Nope r60. That dubious honor goes to Chariots of Fire!

The best 2 hr. nap EVER!

by Anonymousreply 68May 10, 2015 12:05 PM

'Mulholland Dr.' and 'Blade Runner'

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 69May 10, 2015 12:59 PM

Most John Wayne movies.

by Anonymousreply 70May 10, 2015 1:08 PM

Ooops, sorry! I misread it. I thought that this thread was about 'Movies you can see over and over again', that's why i wrote Mulholland Dr and Blade Runner, which are films i absolutely adore.

by Anonymousreply 71May 10, 2015 6:04 PM

When I saw The Legend of Bagger Vance in the theater I fell asleep about 2/3 of the way through it

by Anonymousreply 72May 10, 2015 7:26 PM

The Big Chill(aka The Big Snooze)

by Anonymousreply 73May 10, 2015 7:32 PM

The first two Bored of the Rings flicks (I didn't even bother to see the third one).

Boyhood.

I wished that Her had put me to sleep, but I was too angry that critics were raving about such an obviously godawful piece of shit.

by Anonymousreply 74May 10, 2015 7:36 PM

Yes, Chariots of Fire

by Anonymousreply 75May 10, 2015 10:24 PM

Picnic at Hanging Rock. At the theatre, I did sleep through all but the first 20 minutes.

by Anonymousreply 76May 10, 2015 10:29 PM

The Big Chill and Terms of Endearment are two of the worst films of all time.

Boyhood. Mama Mia. Anything with "the Shnozz" Streep.

All Star Wars and the current crop of Avengers, except the first Capn America which isn't bad.

The latest Annie. Anything Oprah has a hand in.

All of the Star Trek movies with the original cast.

Anything with Ms. Clooney.

Japanese and Chinese films. Sorry.

Nearly everything Disney cranks out.

But they should advertise The Big Chill and Terms as sleep aids.

by Anonymousreply 77May 11, 2015 4:54 AM

My Dinner With Andre. Once it was available for home viewing I rented it. Every time I tried to watch I was asleep about 10 minutes in through the entire film. I think I tried watching it about 4 times and fell asleep each time.

A few years ago I caught it on tv and not only stayed awake throughout but really got engaged in the story. It was on tv again in the past year and once again it was a snoozer.

That's the only film with that track record for me but many of the movies mentioned here bore me so much I get distracted by other things (like logging into DL) and the movie becomes background noise.

by Anonymousreply 78May 11, 2015 5:16 AM

Accidental Tourist. Comforting

by Anonymousreply 79May 11, 2015 5:28 AM

When I was used to sleeping with the TV on, and I didn't have cable, I would go to sleep to The Ring with Naomi Watts, loved to sleep with northern exposure on,any of the Lord of the rings are good

by Anonymousreply 80May 11, 2015 6:21 AM

I 'rented' something called 'the wind that shakes the barley' for about 2 months, tried to watch it over and over, I still haven't seen it

by Anonymousreply 81May 11, 2015 6:25 AM

The Clooney mention reminded me of Solaris, starring George Clooney. I did sleep through that.

by Anonymousreply 82May 11, 2015 11:34 AM

King Kong 2005

by Anonymousreply 83May 11, 2015 12:25 PM

Meg Ryan movies.

by Anonymousreply 84May 11, 2015 12:49 PM

Moonstruck and Steel Magnolias.

by Anonymousreply 85May 11, 2015 12:50 PM

R77 I agree with all you posted except Mama Mia - for some reason that movie holds my attention...I think it may be the lack of chemistry between most of the actors but it is always a funfest to me to watch the strangeness that unfolded throughout.

by Anonymousreply 86May 12, 2015 5:02 AM

My partner just reminded me that Birdman should win this thread. He is correct.

by Anonymousreply 87May 12, 2015 5:03 AM

Out of Africa

by Anonymousreply 88May 12, 2015 5:06 AM

Anything by Woody Allen.

by Anonymousreply 89May 12, 2015 5:11 AM

The Hobbit movies

(but not the LOTR movies)

by Anonymousreply 90May 12, 2015 7:24 AM

the shining

big fish

by Anonymousreply 91May 12, 2015 8:28 AM

Another vote for LOTR! Went to see it with my mom Christmas Day 2011. Both fell asleep. Never bothered watching the other two. The first movie went on and on about nothing.

The recent LES MISERABLES movie. Now, I enjoy musical theater and some opera, but wall-to-wall singing doesn't work on screen. It's too fatiguing! Like when a movie features too many action sequences (e.g., Jackson's KING KONG remake). It gets tiring after a while.

by Anonymousreply 92August 22, 2018 6:04 PM

Meet Joe Black

by Anonymousreply 93August 22, 2018 6:15 PM

I don't think these films are boring, I just never stay awake:

The Exorcist (not boring but I've never seen the complete film)

2001 (could be boring to some) I always fall asleep mid-film and wake up when he turns into a giant baby.

by Anonymousreply 94August 22, 2018 6:31 PM

Out Of Africa.

by Anonymousreply 95August 22, 2018 6:31 PM

Harry Potter

by Anonymousreply 96August 22, 2018 6:33 PM

Saving Private Ryan

by Anonymousreply 97August 22, 2018 6:34 PM

Citizen Kane owns this thread.

by Anonymousreply 98August 22, 2018 6:53 PM

Dune

Mulholland Drive

Blue Velvet

Midnight in the garden of god and evil

Blade Runner (both versions)

by Anonymousreply 99August 22, 2018 7:27 PM

Nell

by Anonymousreply 100August 22, 2018 8:21 PM

Add me to the Star Wars snoozefest.
