Are there any other fans of this classic romance on DL? Kim Cattrall has said it is the one film she is most proud of in her illustrious career.
Of course, it's part of the canon. Cattral is such an enigma. British? Canadian? 80s titty woman? Samantha?

I loved the song in the dress up/window display set up montage ("Do You Dream") and was happy when I was able to download it from Napster. It had been so hard to find the soundtrack.

Absolutely love this movie. Kim Cattrall and Andrew McCarthy were both so cute and gorgeous and had great chemistry. And the queen who played Hollywood, with his Andre Leon Talley take-off, was hilarious.

That song freaked me out when I was a kid. Grace slick has crazy eyes in the mv.

Andrew McCarthy was so hot

R4 I was surprised to find out 80s dance pop singer Alisha was behind that tune. It's very good.

" this classic romance"
This.....what????
by Anonymous | reply 11 | March 8, 2015 9:30 PM |
"Her illustrious career?"
So "Porky's" can't be considered illustrious?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | March 8, 2015 9:44 PM |
Yeah, I have a soft spot for this movie. It's the only time my mom and I went to see a movie together, without the rest of our family. She called me off school that day for the hell of it and took me out to lunch then we went to see it. It's a fun movie too.

Eat me Hollywood!!
by Anonymous | reply 15 | March 9, 2015 2:24 AM |
It was filmed on location. In Philadelphia including the now defunct John Wanamaker's
I always thought it was NYC
I guess East Coast big cities look alike
by Anonymous | reply 16 | March 9, 2015 4:19 AM |
Possibly because it was cheaper to film in Philly than NY. They've been filming some of the superhero movies here in Cleveland as well and simply modifying some of the streets to look like they were filming in New York. Same goes for Pittsburgh, where they filmed The Dark Knight Rises.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | March 9, 2015 4:37 AM |
my favorite is the security cop and his dog

This movie makes no cents! Was it ever explained how she came to life? How did she learn English? How did she know anything? Was she just born as an adult? Where did she come from? Wasn't the guy ever curious about that? Wasn't SHE ever curious about that? Why wouldn't she want to know about her origins and how she came to be?
by Anonymous | reply 19 | March 9, 2015 11:44 AM |
Did she have female parts?
by Anonymous | reply 20 | March 9, 2015 12:07 PM |
They should do a remake but with a gay mannequin.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | March 9, 2015 12:35 PM |
R17 also because Philly is "right down the road" from New York City
It's actually closer to NYC than Atlantic City is
by Anonymous | reply 22 | March 9, 2015 2:26 PM |
I'm sure filming access to a grand old department store like John Wannamaker was a determining factor in why the movie ended up being shot in Philly.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | March 9, 2015 4:45 PM |
[quote]This movie makes no cents!
While it wasn't the biggest box office draw in the world, it did in fact make cents. $42 million, according to Wikipedia.

Here's Alisha - Do You Dream for anyone curious. Not impressed personally, no wonder I'd never heard of her.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | March 9, 2015 5:14 PM |
I loved Do You Dream About Me when I was a little boy but I have to admit as an adult its pretty garbagey.

What? No love for Mannequin 2: On the Move?
by Anonymous | reply 27 | March 10, 2015 3:42 AM |
R21, Matt Bomer can play the mannequin!
by Anonymous | reply 28 | March 10, 2015 3:44 AM |
It's a stupid, terrible movie and you must be an idiot for thinking it's a classic. Just because it got played constantly on HBO or Showtime in the 90s doesn't make it a classic.
Anyway, I hate myself for knowing this, but I believe the mannequin came alive because of some stupid magic Egyptian necklace or choker. Now excuse me, I need to go damage my brain to remove this from my memory.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | March 10, 2015 3:59 AM |
The "Mannequin" you discuss is a far inferior remake of a classic 1937 film, in which the role later essayed by Ms. Cattrall was brilliantly portrayed by that queen of the cinema, Joan Crawford.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | March 10, 2015 4:41 AM |
That's the OSCAR-NOMINATED "Mannequin", if you don't mind. Show some respect.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | March 10, 2015 4:53 AM |
r26, the production is such a cringy, 80s synth nightmare, who even knows if the song is any good or if she can sing. The 80s had the most obnoxious synthesized dance music.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | March 10, 2015 5:02 AM |
I liked Mannequin 2 better as kid. Original buffy and those three muscle guys that worked for the count in their tight shorts>>>
by Anonymous | reply 33 | June 25, 2018 1:56 AM |
No mention of Estelle Getty? You bitches are slipping.
"Nothing's Going to Stop Us Now" is such a godawful song that it comes back around to being enjoyable. No, I can't explain it.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | June 25, 2018 2:02 AM |
Mannequin is the epitome of '80s cheese but it's entertaining.
Kim Cattrall worked steadily in the '80s - Porky's , Police Academy, Mannequin, Masquerade. She is gorgeous.
"Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" is a guilty pleasure. Hard to believe Grace Slick who sang Somebody to Love was singing such a cheesy love song, but many '60s artists scored with '80s soundtrack love songs - Bill Medley, Jennifer Warnes, Joe Cocker.

my favorite was when the girl ROSE who was stalking CHARLIE. created a boyfriend named MANNY QUINN. and charlie went crazy trying to see him, he was too dumb to know roses boyfriend was a mannequin

NGSUN is a great song. It’s still in heavy rotation on Classic playlists. Mickey and Grace were great belters.
I’m glad that Hollywood uses the hose on those cops at the end. It’s good to see the nellie queen fight for what’s right rather than squeal and run away.
The actor who plays the bumbling cop is gay. A Datalounge poster from days of yore wrote about bumping into him pretty frequently at the gay booth stores.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | June 25, 2018 2:13 AM |
Mannequin 2 is when I behan to think less of Kristy Swanson. She just looked so trashy and... farty (its a look) in that one. Alas shes a very vocal Trump sympathizer now.

The exquisite Roxie and James Spader as the toady!
by Anonymous | reply 40 | June 25, 2018 2:42 AM |
Hollywood Montrose was played by the late Meshach Taylor.
Better known as Anthony, on Designing Women.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | June 25, 2018 2:44 AM |
R40 the actress that played Roxie...never saw her before or since, far as I can recall.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | June 25, 2018 2:47 AM |
R39 Mannequin 2 was a rip off of splash even the actor was a dollar store Tom Hanks . Still I can’t help but love it in all it’s cheesy glory it’s one of those movies that are soo bad and cheesey that they enjoyable . Those three muscle bound bavarian security guards were extremely hot and the movie made sure to show their nice muscular butts a lot.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | June 25, 2018 8:30 AM |
Hollywood is right at the top of those awful 80s gay stock characters meant to offer comic relief but really just made you squirm and feel awful. Watching it as a kid, I knew this wasn’t affectionate and that the laughter in the audience wasn’t “with” Hollywood but was actually “at.” The song Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us was an irresistible ear worm. The rest of the movie can go fuck off.

by Anonymous | reply 65 | July 15, 2020 2:52 AM |
Just three short years later, I played a mannequin come-to-life in "A Mom for Christmas." More people saw me in my TV movie than that impostor Kim C. in the entire theatrical run of "Mannequin."

Here’s a video where they visit filming locations from the movie. At about the 7:05 mark they go to Camp Hill, Pennsylvania where they filmed the Illustra store, which was a new Boscov’s that was about to open at that time. It was quite the event that they were filming there when I was growing up.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | July 15, 2020 4:44 AM |
R66 I loved that movie as a kid.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | July 15, 2020 6:59 AM |
Kind of bizarre to think Andrew McCarthy and James Spader co-starred in this and Less Than Zero in the same year. Two completely different movies.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | July 15, 2020 12:20 PM |
Great video, R67! My first summer job was working as a cashier at that Boscov's, a few months after "Mannequin" was filmed in the (then) brand-new store in 1986.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | July 16, 2020 1:31 AM |
R70 Nice! Funny thing is that nothing in that store has changed in 34 years, lol.

Andrew’s son Sam is acting now too, he’s on Dead Like Me on Netflix and he’s a cutie. Maybe he can star in a Son of Mannequin movie, updated to have him fall in love with a male mannequin this time.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | July 16, 2020 1:43 AM |
Yeah, R71; pretty much nothing in that whole area has changed in 34 years, which is why I left looooong ago
by Anonymous | reply 73 | July 16, 2020 2:19 AM |
