Mannequin

Are there any other fans of this classic romance on DL? Kim Cattrall has said it is the one film she is most proud of in her illustrious career.

Of course, it's part of the canon. Cattral is such an enigma. British? Canadian? 80s titty woman? Samantha?

by Anonymousreply 1March 8, 2015 5:04 AM

Nothing's going to stop us

by Anonymousreply 2March 8, 2015 5:07 AM

Her illustrious career?

by Anonymousreply 3March 8, 2015 5:09 AM

I loved the song in the dress up/window display set up montage ("Do You Dream") and was happy when I was able to download it from Napster. It had been so hard to find the soundtrack.

by Anonymousreply 4March 8, 2015 5:28 AM

[quote]Of course, it's part of the canon. Cattral is such an enigma. British? Canadian? 80s titty woman? Samantha?

Vulcan?

by Anonymousreply 5March 8, 2015 5:30 AM

Absolutely love this movie. Kim Cattrall and Andrew McCarthy were both so cute and gorgeous and had great chemistry. And the queen who played Hollywood, with his Andre Leon Talley take-off, was hilarious.

by Anonymousreply 6March 8, 2015 7:48 AM

That song freaked me out when I was a kid. Grace slick has crazy eyes in the mv.

by Anonymousreply 7March 8, 2015 9:03 AM

[quote]in her illustrious career

Illustrious?

by Anonymousreply 8March 8, 2015 9:10 AM

Andrew McCarthy was so hot

by Anonymousreply 9March 8, 2015 9:27 PM

R4 I was surprised to find out 80s dance pop singer Alisha was behind that tune. It's very good.

by Anonymousreply 10March 8, 2015 9:28 PM

" this classic romance"

This.....what????

by Anonymousreply 11March 8, 2015 9:30 PM

I love Hollywood

"Her illustrious career?"

So "Porky's" can't be considered illustrious?

by Anonymousreply 13March 8, 2015 9:44 PM

Yeah, I have a soft spot for this movie. It's the only time my mom and I went to see a movie together, without the rest of our family. She called me off school that day for the hell of it and took me out to lunch then we went to see it. It's a fun movie too.

by Anonymousreply 14March 8, 2015 9:55 PM

Eat me Hollywood!!

by Anonymousreply 15March 9, 2015 2:24 AM

It was filmed on location. In Philadelphia including the now defunct John Wanamaker's

I always thought it was NYC

I guess East Coast big cities look alike

by Anonymousreply 16March 9, 2015 4:19 AM

Possibly because it was cheaper to film in Philly than NY. They've been filming some of the superhero movies here in Cleveland as well and simply modifying some of the streets to look like they were filming in New York. Same goes for Pittsburgh, where they filmed The Dark Knight Rises.

by Anonymousreply 17March 9, 2015 4:37 AM

my favorite is the security cop and his dog

by Anonymousreply 18March 9, 2015 6:23 AM

This movie makes no cents! Was it ever explained how she came to life? How did she learn English? How did she know anything? Was she just born as an adult? Where did she come from? Wasn't the guy ever curious about that? Wasn't SHE ever curious about that? Why wouldn't she want to know about her origins and how she came to be?

by Anonymousreply 19March 9, 2015 11:44 AM

Did she have female parts?

by Anonymousreply 20March 9, 2015 12:07 PM

They should do a remake but with a gay mannequin.

by Anonymousreply 21March 9, 2015 12:35 PM

R17 also because Philly is "right down the road" from New York City

It's actually closer to NYC than Atlantic City is

by Anonymousreply 22March 9, 2015 2:26 PM

I'm sure filming access to a grand old department store like John Wannamaker was a determining factor in why the movie ended up being shot in Philly.

by Anonymousreply 23March 9, 2015 4:45 PM

[quote]This movie makes no cents!

While it wasn't the biggest box office draw in the world, it did in fact make cents. $42 million, according to Wikipedia.

by Anonymousreply 24March 9, 2015 5:04 PM

Here's Alisha - Do You Dream for anyone curious. Not impressed personally, no wonder I'd never heard of her.

by Anonymousreply 25March 9, 2015 5:14 PM

I loved Do You Dream About Me when I was a little boy but I have to admit as an adult its pretty garbagey.

by Anonymousreply 26March 10, 2015 3:38 AM

What? No love for Mannequin 2: On the Move?

by Anonymousreply 27March 10, 2015 3:42 AM

R21, Matt Bomer can play the mannequin!

by Anonymousreply 28March 10, 2015 3:44 AM

It's a stupid, terrible movie and you must be an idiot for thinking it's a classic. Just because it got played constantly on HBO or Showtime in the 90s doesn't make it a classic.

Anyway, I hate myself for knowing this, but I believe the mannequin came alive because of some stupid magic Egyptian necklace or choker. Now excuse me, I need to go damage my brain to remove this from my memory.

by Anonymousreply 29March 10, 2015 3:59 AM

The "Mannequin" you discuss is a far inferior remake of a classic 1937 film, in which the role later essayed by Ms. Cattrall was brilliantly portrayed by that queen of the cinema, Joan Crawford.

by Anonymousreply 30March 10, 2015 4:41 AM

That's the OSCAR-NOMINATED "Mannequin", if you don't mind. Show some respect.

by Anonymousreply 31March 10, 2015 4:53 AM

r26, the production is such a cringy, 80s synth nightmare, who even knows if the song is any good or if she can sing. The 80s had the most obnoxious synthesized dance music.

by Anonymousreply 32March 10, 2015 5:02 AM

I liked Mannequin 2 better as kid. Original buffy and those three muscle guys that worked for the count in their tight shorts>>>

by Anonymousreply 33June 25, 2018 1:56 AM

No mention of Estelle Getty? You bitches are slipping.

"Nothing's Going to Stop Us Now" is such a godawful song that it comes back around to being enjoyable. No, I can't explain it.

by Anonymousreply 34June 25, 2018 2:02 AM

The gay version....

by Anonymousreply 35June 25, 2018 2:05 AM

Mannequin is the epitome of '80s cheese but it's entertaining.

Kim Cattrall worked steadily in the '80s - Porky's , Police Academy, Mannequin, Masquerade. She is gorgeous.

"Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" is a guilty pleasure. Hard to believe Grace Slick who sang Somebody to Love was singing such a cheesy love song, but many '60s artists scored with '80s soundtrack love songs - Bill Medley, Jennifer Warnes, Joe Cocker.

by Anonymousreply 36June 25, 2018 2:09 AM

my favorite was when the girl ROSE who was stalking CHARLIE. created a boyfriend named MANNY QUINN. and charlie went crazy trying to see him, he was too dumb to know roses boyfriend was a mannequin

by Anonymousreply 37June 25, 2018 2:10 AM

NGSUN is a great song. It’s still in heavy rotation on Classic playlists. Mickey and Grace were great belters.

I’m glad that Hollywood uses the hose on those cops at the end. It’s good to see the nellie queen fight for what’s right rather than squeal and run away.

The actor who plays the bumbling cop is gay. A Datalounge poster from days of yore wrote about bumping into him pretty frequently at the gay booth stores.

by Anonymousreply 38June 25, 2018 2:13 AM

Mannequin 2 is when I behan to think less of Kristy Swanson. She just looked so trashy and... farty (its a look) in that one. Alas shes a very vocal Trump sympathizer now.

by Anonymousreply 39June 25, 2018 2:36 AM

The exquisite Roxie and James Spader as the toady!

by Anonymousreply 40June 25, 2018 2:42 AM

Hollywood Montrose was played by the late Meshach Taylor.

Better known as Anthony, on Designing Women.

by Anonymousreply 41June 25, 2018 2:44 AM

R40 the actress that played Roxie...never saw her before or since, far as I can recall.

by Anonymousreply 42June 25, 2018 2:47 AM

R39 Mannequin 2 was a rip off of splash even the actor was a dollar store Tom Hanks . Still I can’t help but love it in all it’s cheesy glory it’s one of those movies that are soo bad and cheesey that they enjoyable . Those three muscle bound bavarian security guards were extremely hot and the movie made sure to show their nice muscular butts a lot.

by Anonymousreply 43June 25, 2018 8:30 AM

Hollywood is right at the top of those awful 80s gay stock characters meant to offer comic relief but really just made you squirm and feel awful. Watching it as a kid, I knew this wasn’t affectionate and that the laughter in the audience wasn’t “with” Hollywood but was actually “at.” The song Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us was an irresistible ear worm. The rest of the movie can go fuck off.

by Anonymousreply 44June 25, 2018 11:54 AM

^^ Estelle Gettys ghost

by Anonymousreply 45June 25, 2018 12:00 PM

It was a sweet little love story, nothing more.

by Anonymousreply 46June 25, 2018 1:09 PM

Was Hollywood supposed to be gay?

by Anonymousreply 47June 25, 2018 1:13 PM

Nothing’s gonna stop us now from having butt secks!

by Anonymousreply 48June 25, 2018 1:24 PM

I loved the guy that played Armond or whatever. He was hilarious.

by Anonymousreply 49June 26, 2018 2:12 AM
by Anonymousreply 50November 9, 2018 3:29 AM

Dear OP, do you sincerely believe this woman has had an 'illustrious career'?

by Anonymousreply 51November 9, 2018 3:36 AM

Andrew Mccarthy was so hot and that damn song gets stuck in my head all the time.

by Anonymousreply 52July 14, 2020 4:34 PM

Completely unbelievable as a couple as McCarthy is with every woman except possibly Molly Ringwald. Worst actor ever.

by Anonymousreply 53July 14, 2020 4:38 PM

Weird. For some reason, I had it in my head from childhood that Julia Louis Dreyfus played Roxie.

by Anonymousreply 54July 14, 2020 5:19 PM

Hollywood was gay. He talked about his boyfriend.

by Anonymousreply 55July 14, 2020 5:50 PM

[quote]Kim Cattrall has said it is the one film she is most proud of in her illustrious career.

Well, she doesn't have much to choose from, poor dear.

by Anonymousreply 56July 14, 2020 5:56 PM

I loved Roxy. She'd be fun to grab a drink with and be bitchy.

by Anonymousreply 57July 14, 2020 5:59 PM

R22 I’m throwing a flag down on that one.

AC is closer to Philly both in driving time and miles, no?

by Anonymousreply 58July 14, 2020 6:18 PM

My college roommate LOVED this movie.

by Anonymousreply 59July 14, 2020 6:24 PM

NGSUN had its best iteration with Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig in Skeleton Twins. Watch and tell me you didn't fall in love with Bill a little bit.

by Anonymousreply 62July 14, 2020 9:55 PM

if i was stuck in time, i would totally want to be freed and pulled into an 80s mall! in my Caftan, of course. Bring me right to the Chanel counter, honey - i need some lip gloss - ancient city style!

by Anonymousreply 63July 14, 2020 11:52 PM

Loved the department store this was shot in, gorgeous. Stuff like that doesn't exist anymore. I was born way too late to enjoy that era.

by Anonymousreply 64July 15, 2020 2:43 AM

Fascinating how so little has changed in Philly in 30+ years.

by Anonymousreply 65July 15, 2020 2:52 AM

Just three short years later, I played a mannequin come-to-life in "A Mom for Christmas." More people saw me in my TV movie than that impostor Kim C. in the entire theatrical run of "Mannequin."

Here’s a video where they visit filming locations from the movie. At about the 7:05 mark they go to Camp Hill, Pennsylvania where they filmed the Illustra store, which was a new Boscov’s that was about to open at that time. It was quite the event that they were filming there when I was growing up.

R66 I loved that movie as a kid.

by Anonymousreply 68July 15, 2020 6:59 AM

Kind of bizarre to think Andrew McCarthy and James Spader co-starred in this and Less Than Zero in the same year. Two completely different movies.

by Anonymousreply 69July 15, 2020 12:20 PM

Great video, R67! My first summer job was working as a cashier at that Boscov's, a few months after "Mannequin" was filmed in the (then) brand-new store in 1986.

by Anonymousreply 70July 16, 2020 1:31 AM

R70 Nice! Funny thing is that nothing in that store has changed in 34 years, lol.

by Anonymousreply 71July 16, 2020 1:39 AM

Andrew’s son Sam is acting now too, he’s on Dead Like Me on Netflix and he’s a cutie. Maybe he can star in a Son of Mannequin movie, updated to have him fall in love with a male mannequin this time.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 72July 16, 2020 1:43 AM

Yeah, R71; pretty much nothing in that whole area has changed in 34 years, which is why I left looooong ago

by Anonymousreply 73July 16, 2020 2:19 AM

She is the most proud of THAT film? Terrible. What are her other films? Wasn't she in Police Academy (1984)? Now THAT was a hilarious film!

by Anonymousreply 74July 16, 2020 2:22 AM

If you thought Grace Slick was creepy in that video, don’t watch this low budget music video

R72 His son is cuter than he was. At least in motion.

by Anonymousreply 76July 16, 2020 4:33 AM

McCarthy’s watery nervous eyes always detracted for his looks.

by Anonymousreply 77July 16, 2020 5:19 AM

r77 Thank you for voicing what I never could. There IS something wrong with Andy's eyes.

by Anonymousreply 78July 16, 2020 5:41 AM

R78 Andrew’s eyes are expressive but shifty, he has sort of Serial killer eyes but they make him extra hot to me. His son has similar eyes on the show Dead to me.

by Anonymousreply 79July 16, 2020 5:46 AM

Andrew McCarthy's daughter was Matilda on Broadway.

by Anonymousreply 80July 16, 2020 6:22 AM

So? Mine was a best-selling toy!

by Anonymousreply 81July 16, 2020 12:22 PM

I turned down this film to do Hiding Out. Awesome career choice, right?
