People always find me working the red carpet madness down the frozen foods aisle at Gelsons!

Don't worry -- I'm not tempted. I don't eat solid food.

Friends visited me in L.A. and I knew right where to take them to see a star, guaranteed. Grocery store on PCH up Malibu way (maybe a Ralph's as mentioned earlier). Walked in, glanced around, said "Movie star at ten o'clock" and there was Kate Hudson in her Daisy Duke shorts in produce. All smiles.

It's that easy, tourists. :)

by Anonymousreply 16February 26, 2015 10:17 PM

Early 90s - I was in line in a bodega on Lex on the UES. Who was the woman in front of me at the counter? Jackie Onassis. What was she buying? Two packs of Marlboros.

Not kidding.

A famous male super model, I see him at the local Costco and also at Rite Aid.

I won't even name him because I was trashed here when I mentioned that he lives a few blocks away from me in Queens, of all places!

I commented that I was shocked that he had been so famous and now lives in such an unfashionable part of Queens. He lives up the block from a few friends.

by Anonymousreply 23February 26, 2015 10:42 PM

Patty Duke

by Anonymousreply 24February 26, 2015 10:49 PM

Chris Rock in a book store, he was in our small town for a stand up gig.

He was in the entertainment section of the book store.

by Anonymousreply 25February 26, 2015 10:50 PM

Annette Bening once let me pass her in line at the checkout counter at Ralph's, since I was only buying a bottle of rum and butter. I didn't even recognize her until afterwards when my roommate told me who she was.

by Anonymousreply 26February 26, 2015 10:53 PM

I saw Laura Branigan at a buffet once. She knocked me over when I tried to get the potato salad, then took it all for herself.

Or the queen who saw her honking her car horn outside Blockbuster?

by Anonymousreply 30February 26, 2015 10:58 PM

John Lennon and Yoko Ono at Whole Earth Foods on Prince St. in SoHo NYC, 1972. I went in to buy raw cashews and he was hogging the scoop. Not immediately knowing it was him I said "Please hurry, I don't have all day." He turned and looked at me and said he was indecisive and sorry." When I recognized him I said jokingly "I bought all of your albums, paid to see you in concert and the very least you can do is pay for my nuts." He and Yoko looked at my bulging crotch, as I was wearing tight jeans, and said that would "break our bank account" and laughed their asses off. He actually bought for me the one pound bag of cashews. It was a fantastic experience!

by Anonymousreply 31February 26, 2015 10:58 PM

R31, delightful! Thank you for posting.

by Anonymousreply 32February 26, 2015 11:01 PM

I saw Kirstie Alley at Fresh Market. She looked a hot mess and a heavy set woman was with her yelling about getting fried chicken. Kirstie seemed down to earth. I pretended I didn't know who she was. Just to fuck with her but I don't think she cared.

by Anonymousreply 33February 26, 2015 11:02 PM

That was awesome R31.

by Anonymousreply 34February 26, 2015 11:03 PM

Gary Morton talked her out of it.

by Anonymousreply 38February 26, 2015 11:13 PM

Julia Stiles when she was at Columbia.

Georgia Engel in a Midtown Morton Williams. I usually don't say anything to celebs in the city but I was two feet from her so I quickly told her how much I loved her. Turned out, she was reaching for toilet paper as I said that.

I saw her in line later and she let the woman behind her go ahead of her as Engel had a full cart.

by Anonymousreply 39February 26, 2015 11:17 PM

Richard Thomas AKA John Boy Walton at the Mayfair, now Gelsons, on Franklin in LA. He lived in the hood so I saw him there alot.

My Kristy McNichol story! Waaay back when she was at her peak on TV, I was a shop bottom at the JCP in Northridge. I was working in the men's dept and she walked up to the jewelry case and waited for help. I jumped behind the counter and asked "Can I help you?" She just rolled her eyes and banged her nail against the glass case indicating what she wanted. I waited a few seconds until she looked me in the eye and said, "Say Please."

by Anonymousreply 40February 26, 2015 11:17 PM

Whole Foods, Chelsea - Sam Waterston (smaller than I would have guessed), Sandra Bernhardt (I don't like her but she actually looked glossy and glamorous), and Grace Coddington with a riot of red hair and looking tired as she rested on her cart.

Westside Market, Chelsea - Seth Meyers (small but very cute in a baseball hat)

Pantry, Fire Island - Cheyenne Jackson, David Geffen, Jane Krakowski (outside)

by Anonymousreply 46February 26, 2015 11:49 PM

Joan Crawford!

by Anonymousreply 47February 26, 2015 11:49 PM

Living in CT I occasionally see celebrities in the supermarket, but the most unusual was Patrick Stewart looking completely lost in the aisles and asking for help.

I know, I wouldn't have believed it but I was standing right next to him and there weren't many people in the store at that hour. I recognized the voice first.

He's quite thin in person.

by Anonymousreply 48February 26, 2015 11:50 PM

Martha Stewart, Paul Newman - Westport ct. Late 80s.

by Anonymousreply 49February 26, 2015 11:51 PM

Julianne Moore, seriously, plus Peter Dinklage, Annie Liebovitz, Helena Christenson, Victor Garber.

by Anonymousreply 51February 26, 2015 11:53 PM

John Waters at Eddie's in Baltimore on Roland Avenue. We both had charge accounts there and he said "Chargin' groceries, hmph hmph hmph."

by Anonymousreply 52February 27, 2015 12:07 AM

Tina Louise, Midtown east. Not particularly pleasant. Julianne Moore outside of a deli on Hudson a few blocks south of 14th. She was looking around to see if anyone was looking at her. She seems to be very needy. Just listen to Alec Baldwin's podcast interview with her.

by Anonymousreply 53February 27, 2015 12:15 AM

I saw Barbara Streisand in 1959, before she dropped the "a" and she was in Kroger and she went to the aisle where they sold plants. It was Mother's Day and I guess she forgot to get her mother a gift as it was 8pm.

Anyway, she found a flower and took a big sniff and must've got her big Jew nose caught in the petal as she threw the flower down and started sneezing.

I said "That will be five dollars." She said, "For what, the flower is all crushed."

I said,"Your nose crushed it you bought it."

She then said "Do you know who I am." I said, "Yes you're the lady that is going to pay me five dollars for a crushed flower."

by Anonymousreply 54February 27, 2015 12:17 AM

For the elder gays: I used to see Marilyn Miller in the supermarket as a kid and she was always, always decked out in a sin tight dress (usually leopard skin) stiletto heels and big, movie star hat.

She was quite a sight, all gussied up and pushing that cart, and always with white gloves, I might add.

She was great--as a kid I was mesmerized by her and she was give me the biggest smile, so sweet, she had an aura about her that was so glamorous and wonderful.

by Anonymousreply 55February 27, 2015 12:24 AM

Oh my God, I meant to say Marilyn Maxwell!!!

What a great figure she had, she was a bigger woman, tallish (can't tell with those heels though) broad shoulders, and very hourglass.

She accentuated her wonderful curves and kept that blonde styled hair up.

I just looked her up and see that she died at only fifty. How sad.

RIP Marilyn Maxwell, and thank you for the smiles! xoxoxo

by Anonymousreply 56February 27, 2015 12:31 AM

Charles Dera in Sprouts in Huntington Beach last year. Tall, broad shouldered and gorgeous in real life . I was really trying not to stare because it's weird to be able to recognize a pornstar. Lol. His girlfriend is fug though. A kinda chubby Asian chick with big teeth. He could do much better.

by Anonymousreply 57February 27, 2015 12:35 AM

I love you, R50!

by Anonymousreply 58February 27, 2015 12:37 AM

Tom Brady at the Milton Fresh Market in East Milton (MA) Square. Early days with the Pats, pre-Gisele

by Anonymousreply 59February 27, 2015 12:38 AM

I was a cashier at the local Ralphs and in walks Tiffani Thiessen. She went to check out and I said "Aren't you Miss Tiffani Thiessen"?

She said, "No, I'm Tiffani AMBER Thiessen."

I said, "Your credit card says "Tiffani Thiessen."

She curtly replied "It's wrong."

I said, "Then you can't use it."

She said, "Well I never."

I said, "That's a lie, Mario Lopez was in here an hour ago and according to him you did."

She got in a huff and said,"I'm taking my business elsewhere."

I said, "I know, Mark Paul Gosselaar, was in yesterday and evidently you took your business there too."

by Anonymousreply 60February 27, 2015 12:49 AM

Standing behind Carol Channing in the checkout line at Safeway. I took a peek at cart filled with canned corn, frozen corn, corn on the cobb, and corn chowder. Nothing else. She caught me checking out her cart so I responded with a friendly smile "you must really like corn." She seemed puzzled and asked me what I meant.

by Anonymousreply 61February 27, 2015 12:50 AM

"For the elder gays: I used to see Marilyn Miller in the supermarket as a kid"

Nice correction. If you had seen Marilyn Miller as a kid, then you'd be around the same age as Olivia deH.

by Anonymousreply 62February 27, 2015 12:50 AM

For those Toronto DLers who knows the Kensington Market

Clark Johnson (Homicide) at the European Meat Market

Tobey Maguire and Leo Dicaprio a few months ago at the Melrose Farmers Market. Leo was taking Tobey's kids around to the booths and buying them odds and ends.

Were Toby and Leo making out, when that ugly Jewess Toby married wasn't looking?

Carol Burnett a few years ago at the Century City mall (Ralphs?)

Ian Zeiring Weho Vons

Bobby Trendy multiple times at Weho Vons checking me out each time

Kristen Johnson same Vons, black circles around eyes, asking some worker for help in produce

by Anonymousreply 66February 27, 2015 1:32 AM

R66 I don't think there's a Vons in WeHo. Do you mean Pavilions?

The market in the mall in Century City used to be a Mayfair but became a Gelson's.

by Anonymousreply 67February 27, 2015 1:38 AM

nobody

by Anonymousreply 68February 27, 2015 1:47 AM

Debra Messing in Dean and Deluca in SoHo. James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem in Union Square Whole Foods looking like an old shaky alcoholic.

by Anonymousreply 69February 27, 2015 1:50 AM

I stood behind Sally Struthers on line at Ralph's on Sunset/Formosa in Hollywood. She was buying a 12 pack of toilet paper rolls and a huge jug of Vodka.

Not that it was any of my business.

by Anonymousreply 70February 27, 2015 1:52 AM

by Anonymousreply 76February 27, 2015 2:29 AM

I lived in Nashville TN for a few years in the 90s and saw a number of country music celebrities at stores and restaurants around town.

Lee Greenwood at a Shell mini-mart accompanied by a Playboy looking blond. He was very diminutive.

Tanya Tucker at a Franklin Rd. mini-mart buying a diet coke...looked older than on camera.

An incognito Amy Grant buying dog food wearing sunglasses and driving a yellow Mercedes station wagon.

Dolly Parton in line ahead of me in a black limo at a McDonald's drive thru. Also met Dolly's sister Rachael(who played Doralee in the TV version of 9to5)at the vet I was working at. Very sweet and conversational but kind of melancholy. Amazing resemblance to Dolly.

Saw Crystal Gayle at the same vet but didn't speak to her. After she left the unctuous, asshole manager mercilessly dissed her hair.

Also, happened upon Grand ol' Opry member Jim Ed Brown(I know, who the hell is that) buying a gallon of milk at a Food Maxx store at 1 in the morning. When he saw me come around the corner he became very hurried and shady. I was thinking "yeah,I know who y'are but don't flatter yourself...I don't give a shit!" Very tall and big framed and kind of handsome for an older guy.

Celebs I saw at the mall include:

Trisha Yearwood (prettier in person) Martina McBride (pretty but big head)

Also, saw David Geffen in the Lowe's Vanderbilt hotel lobby talking to some industry types. He seemed friendly enough...I kind of look like Jeremy Lingvall,I should have tried to give him my demo CD!

by Anonymousreply 77February 27, 2015 2:34 AM

Barbara Barrie at Fairway

Barbara Cook at the now defunct supermarket on the West side of Broadway between 86th and 87th (it was torn down; otherwise her patronage might have kept it afloat).

Mme Mitterrand, at Zabar's, when she was still First Lady of France. Oddly, I had run into her the previous day at lunch at Le Bernardin. At Zabar's, she advised me that I had good taste in food.

by Anonymousreply 78February 27, 2015 2:38 AM

In late 1988 I saw Michael Keaton with his young son shopping at the Hampstead Cullen's (now defunct chain of upscale convenience stores) one night. He was in London filming the first Batman at the time.

by Anonymousreply 79February 27, 2015 2:42 AM

I saw Lauren Bacall at the Juice Generation by Columbus Circle a month before she died.

by Anonymousreply 80February 27, 2015 2:50 AM

in grocery stores (Ralphs):

Wanda Sykes, Venus Williams, Drew Carey, Sally Struthers (buying vodka and toilet paper).

by Anonymousreply 81February 27, 2015 2:56 AM

R70 and R81

Is that all Sally Struthers needs for survival? Were these at the rock and roll Ralph's?

by Anonymousreply 82February 27, 2015 3:35 AM

Laughing at R82!

by Anonymousreply 83February 27, 2015 3:40 AM

Recently saw Jeremy Piven at a Whole Foods in Santa Monica. He was wearing a large fedora and looked like a pretentious asshole.

Twenty years ago stood next to Blythe Danner (mother of Goop) in another Whole Foods. Have seen Goldie Hawn quite a few times in various stores on Montana Ave. in Santa Monica over the years. Maria Shriver here and there on same Street. Oh yeah, years ago saw Bea Arthur also in the Whole Foods at 15th and Montana. You could tell she had had her face peeled (it was much lighter than her neck). She was with another tall woman.

by Anonymousreply 84February 27, 2015 3:45 AM

Cory Booker at the Whole Foods in West Orange (NJ)

by Anonymousreply 85February 27, 2015 3:49 AM

Jim Thome

by Anonymousreply 86February 27, 2015 4:00 AM

John Cougar Mellencamp at the height of his fame at Kroger's in Bloomington, Indiana (he lived not far away). It was the "faculty" Kroger not the townie one and he stood out with his leather jacket and fancy Beatle boot type shoes. He seemed to be looking to see if anyone recognized him. It seemed embarrassing that he'd act that way.

Gene Siskel in line ahead of me at the drug store in Chicago--he lived a few blocks away on the lake. I lived a block in the other direction. He was shorter than I expected and trying to avert his face--I guess he didn't want to be recognized but it didn't work.

by Anonymousreply 87February 27, 2015 4:07 AM

My sister reached for the same avocado Barbra Streisand was going to grab in the supermarket in Ketchum, Idaho.

by Anonymousreply 88February 27, 2015 4:17 AM

This is such a cliche and I knew it when it happened. Lynda Carter at Sutton Place Gourmet in DC.

by Anonymousreply 89February 27, 2015 4:45 AM

Well, R88, who got the avocado? The suspense is KILLING us!

by Anonymousreply 90February 27, 2015 4:46 AM

[R30] Great story.

by Anonymousreply 91February 27, 2015 4:50 AM

[quote]My sister reached for the same avocado Barbra Streisand was going to grab in the supermarket in Ketchum, Idaho

We have not seen or heard from my sister since.

by Anonymousreply 92February 27, 2015 5:07 AM

Kiri Te Kanawa at the Vons in Montecito, CA

Kurtwood Smith at a Ralphs in Glendale, CA

Not a grocery store but I once ran into Anne Bancroft at the Dart Drug Store on Beverly & La Cienegs

by Anonymousreply 93February 27, 2015 5:14 AM

Saw Paul McCartney in the produce section at whole foods in weho about eight years ago.

Ellen Degeneres ex-girlfriend Alexandra Hedison at Bristol Farms on sunset. Very attractive woman!

by Anonymousreply 94February 27, 2015 5:20 AM

Paul Newman in the 1990s in CT. Recall he had on a pair of madras shorts which showed he had great legs.

Kevin Costner in early 2000s in Colorado. Could tell he was commando under a pair of walking shorts.

by Anonymousreply 95February 27, 2015 6:16 AM

R23, is the model Garrett Neff?

by Anonymousreply 96February 27, 2015 6:32 AM

Robin Williams walking out of a produce market in San Francisco.

by Anonymousreply 97February 27, 2015 6:35 AM

Queen Latifah and her entourage reeking like pot I got a contact high, James Woods and his much much MUCH younger girlfriend both tweaking like crazy on something and making out like horny high-schoolers so I lost my appetite, Valerie Harper in the frozen foods section, Isabel Sanford being as sweet as can be in the check-out line, Tracy Morgan being polite to everyone, Tim Robbins in the OTC medicine aisle as was Karen Allen, and many others over the years.

by Anonymousreply 98February 27, 2015 6:53 AM

Klaus Kinski in a grocery store in northern Ca. This was in the 80's.

by Anonymousreply 99February 27, 2015 6:58 AM

I was shopping in an Ingles - sometime in the fall of 1993. Although the store seemed somewhat empty (IIRC) - I had difficulty locating one of those hand-held shopping baskets....then I spotted an empty one sitting in that area of the checkout where the employees bag customers' groceries. A customer was being checked out right there near the empty basket - and, before I grabbed the basket, I made the instantaneous decision to be polite and ask that customer if he was using that basket. The customer looked startled for a moment, then smiled and indicated that the basket was free for the taking. Right as that simple, 6-second exchange was ending - it dawned on me that the customer was none other than Speech from the rap group "Arrested Development". I was stunned to realize who I was talking to - but I don't think it showed much. I didn't really react to the "monumental" moment at all. From Speech's perspective, nothing in my interaction with him was any different from if I had been talking to Joe Regular - except for perhaps a flash of recognition on my face as the exchange was coming to a close. I didn't go, "Oh, you're Speech!" - I didn't go into fan mode; I just asked him that simple question, then went about my business. It seems that he appreciated that.

In the late-aughts, I ran into John Lewis (Congressman/Civil Rights hero) in a Whole Foods. Though I was trying to be inconspicuous in my recognition/gawking - it seems that John noticed that I was noticing him, and (like a true political veteran) he said "Hi" to me as we passed each other.

by Anonymousreply 100February 27, 2015 7:03 AM

Anthony Quinn, at Day and Night Drugstore, in Stockton, California. He was in town shooting Stanley Kramer's "R.P.M." I was six years old and star struck, because I'd just seen him on TV, playing a pirate in "High Wind in Jamaica."

by Anonymousreply 101February 27, 2015 7:03 AM

Who's at the West Hollywood Pavillions?

by Anonymousreply 102February 27, 2015 7:06 AM

I rang up one when I was cashiering at a store in Orlando. I knew it was a celeb because he had a Disney VIP escort. He had on sunglasses, so I could not figure out who he was. I honestly thought it was Don Imus. As luck would have it, his AMEX didn't take on the machine, so I had to run it through the register's. When I had it in my hand, I saw the name: JOHN FOGERTY. That was in 2008.

If you're at the parks and see the VIP escorts ( with the plaid vests), they're often with a celeb.

by Anonymousreply 103February 27, 2015 7:12 AM

Parker Posey sitting on the sidewalk in front of a gourmet grocery/deli midtown east. She was smoking, waiting for her female friend to do the shopping. She was wearing a flowing knee length skirt and rollerblades. Yes it was the nineties.

Does it count if I was shopping with them? In that case, I'll add Peter Allen, Wentworth Miller, Julie Wilson, David E. Kelly, Bowzer, and Downtown Julie Brown. B-to-Z listers I guess. I knew them from different walks in life, from sharing gigs to doing benefits to having college extracurriculars in common. I am neither famous nor a Hollywood person so don't ask.

DL favorite Ann Reinking!

No really, this was at the First Avenue Food Emporium maybe around 2000.

Living In NY I've obviously spotted a gazillion celebrities, but I think that's the only time I've ever seen one in a supermarket.

She looked basically the same just a bit jowlier.

I saw Bonnie Franklin at 7-11. She walked up to the cashier and said, "Oh you're open, oh thank heaven for seven eleven."

And then she started laughing at her own lame joke.

The cashier told her to take her Slurpee and get out. He didn't even charge her. I guess he was frightened.

I worked at one of Fairway's suburban locations. I saw Slick Rick, NY Yankee Brett Gardner, Joseph Cross and John Shea. As John Shea was leaving, someone shouted, "Hey, Lex Luthor!" He turned around, laughed and waved.

Someone said they had seen Phylicia Rashad in the store, but I never saw her.

by Anonymousreply 125February 27, 2015 1:59 PM

In the 90s I used to work at a Barnes & Noble in Chicago that was next to a local store that was kind of a mini-Whole Foods of its time. It was kind of popular because it was closer than WF at the time, and there was also a hotel across the street where a lot of musicians and famous people stayed, so they were often shopping there (it had a small takeaway counter).

I saw Alanis Morrissette, Henry Rollins and Boy George in that little grocery store (not all at the same time). I met Alanis when she came into B&N and she was incredibly sweet. Bitch might get angry in song but she was sweet as could be in person.

I waited on Oprah. She had a ton of groceries and when I gave her the total she said:

"I'm Oprah."

I said, "yes I recognized you."

She looked all disapointed and said, "Oprah, the TALK SHOW HOST."

I said, "Yes, it comes to $475.00"

She said, "But...but I'm Oprah."

I couldn't figure out if she expected to get it for free or if she was mad that I didn't gush all over her.

by Anonymousreply 133February 27, 2015 3:14 PM

Jodie Foster at Ralph's. I let her go ahead of me at checkout. She said, 'Thank you.'

P.S. It was at 1AM. She'd won the Oscar for Silence of the Lambs several hours earlier. We were the only two in the store on Ventura Blvd./Coldwater Canyon.

Oh yeah, that guy who interviews all the actors on Actor's Studio, though I saw him in KMart rather than the supermarket.

I was on line and the cashier said, "NEXT," when I realized I needed something else. I was talking to my neighbor, who I'd run into at the store I said, "Oh, I have to get a such-and-such." I turned around and said to the guy behind me, "You can go. I need to get something else."

And off I went with my neighbor following me. "Do you know who that was behind you? It was (whatever his name is)."

I said, "No. I wasn't paying attention."

I found what I wanted, paid, went to the parking lot, got in my car and was driving away when I saw the guy sitting under a tree. That was weird, because it's a very busy parking lot and you just don't sit under a tree. I guess he was waiting for a cab or a friend or something. But he was making sure that he was seen.

Not in a supermarket but a hotel elevator.

My sister and I were visiting London, England and we were staying at the Royal Garden Hotel overlooking Kensington Palace and gardens. We stepped into the elevator with a tall young woman with blonde hair and three huge black guys. I looked at the lady but nothing registered. She wore no makeup and was kind of plain looking. Moments later, one of the black dudes says: "do you know who she is"? We said no and he tells us that her name is Joss Stone. My sister was thrilled - as well as embarrassed - because she had just bought her first album, loved her voice and didn't even recognize her. True story.

Not grocery stores, but:

I saw Christie Brinkley in the Genovese drugstore in Huntington LI, wearing what looked like a bright red two-piece Russell sweatsuit. She was married to Billy Joel at the time and they had a home nearby.

Matthew Modine in the Greenwich Village Gap, back when the Gap was hot.

Living in Colorado and having a place in Aspen we'd see all sorts. The Fords were in Vail, of course, but Jack Ford's boyfriends and he would head to Aspen.

So, off the top of my head, all at the supermarket, Cher, Zac Efron, Susan Sarandon, Jack Nicholson, Costner (creep), Goldie Hawn and Ken Russell of course and her kids - Kate Hudson and whoever she's fucking at the moment, Leo DiCaprio. A lot of others. Most shop in the morning and there's an unspoken rule that everyone is polite but no gawking. And most of them are so dressed down and sunglassed you wouldn't know them. Nicholson has sold his place.

Mariah Carey and Rihanna blow through but they're not Aspenites. All show and shoo, and they're not the grocery-shopping type.

Michael Jackson in a bookstore - this was 1996 and he was wearing some sort of swami disguise with his face covered but I could see his eyes. That's so weird, R133. I could see a less famous semi-celebrity doing that, but you'd think someone as famous as Oprah would be relieved on the rare occasion that she went out in public and didn't have people gushing over her. I guess she must be a real narcissist.

by Anonymousreply 212March 6, 2015 7:52 PM

I saw J.R. Ewing at Piggly Wiggly back in the '80s when I was a kid.

by Anonymousreply 213March 6, 2015 8:02 PM

Jon Voight at the A&P on Central Ave in Hartsdale (Scarsdale?) NY in 1991. He was still normal then.

He was in the produce department looking at honeydews with two elderly lady relatives. (He's from Yonkers).

by Anonymousreply 214March 6, 2015 8:05 PM

Paul Stanley from Kiss shops at my local market. I see him all the time. I have never bothered him though.

by Anonymousreply 215March 6, 2015 8:05 PM

Years ago, Before Friday Night Lights, but post-Homefront, Kyle Chandler was ahead of me in line in whatever grocery store that is right inside the entrance to the Hollywood Hills neighborhood in L.A. (I was visiting a friend in L.A., my first time). He was incredibly good-looking, but in a non-actor/L.A. way and in his short interaction with the check-out person had really nice manners. Low key.

by Anonymousreply 216March 6, 2015 8:13 PM

Andrew Cooper (Diet Coke gardener bloke) a few years ago. He was buying stuff in Sainsbury's. That boy can certainly work a pair of jeans. The backside on that one is *nice*.

by Anonymousreply 217March 6, 2015 8:16 PM

R197, in the 90s I saw Georgia Engle in Manhattan, in the area roughly around Bloomingdales. It was night, and I first recognized her voice - she speaks exactly as she did on the Mary Tyler Moore show. When I was able to actually look at her, she was walking with a blind guy. SO incredibly nice and quiet, the way she spoke, telling him where they were (not the sights, just orienting him to the sidewalk - the section where we were had scaffolding).

by Anonymousreply 218March 6, 2015 8:20 PM

R214, was he wearing that ridiculous white scarf around his shoulders?

by Anonymousreply 219March 6, 2015 8:21 PM

We have a Joan Van Ark Troll and a Constance MCashin Troll. Why no Ted Shackleford Troll?

by Anonymousreply 220March 6, 2015 8:24 PM

I saw Jean Stapleton in a checkout line in KMart in Chambersburg PA.

by Anonymousreply 221March 6, 2015 8:59 PM

Yes, it was winter. He also had a beard.

by Anonymousreply 222March 6, 2015 9:18 PM

Doris Day in a K Mart long ago. I knew it was her from the freckles but pretended not to know.

Don Adams in a Thrifty drug store--L.A.--long ago.

Lady Gaga and Taylor Kinney going into Nordstrom's im Chicago last Christmas (2013.)

Patrick Stewart in a NYC bodgea, with a very young woman, early 20s--he was priggish and unpleasant.

The beautiful African American lady who played the sister to the lead African American lady on Passions--Ralphs' Hollywood, a few years ago. I smiled at her and she smiled back. Even prettier in person.

Gena Davis at the shopping mall Santa Monica.

Linda Lavin at Duane Read's NY.

Fran Drescher. Malibu grocery, I forget which one.

More?

by Anonymousreply 224March 7, 2015 3:44 PM

R133, I love you.

by Anonymousreply 225March 7, 2015 4:53 PM

And, actually, r134 is skillfully told.

by Anonymousreply 226March 7, 2015 4:57 PM

I also saw Geena Davis in Santa Monica--at the Whole Foods on Wilshire, probably about 5 years ago. I told her I was a fan. She was gracious (and very tall).

by Anonymousreply 227March 7, 2015 5:05 PM

Julia Roberts at a corner deli somewhere in the Gramercy area. She looks exactly the same in person.

I've also seen Julianne Moore several times in the West Village and I agree with the other poster that she is absolutely RADIANT in person. Gorgeous skin and hair. Even if she wasn't a celebrity you would still stop and notice her.

Cole Hamels in a supermarket in the Philadelphia suburbs. I've seen him a few times. Very cute in person, nice ass. Looks good in a pair of sweats and tee shirt.

by Anonymousreply 231March 7, 2015 7:57 PM

None, but I've been shopping with a few, WTFC?

by Anonymousreply 232March 7, 2015 7:59 PM

Al "Grandpa" Lewis in Astoria Queens NYC. He was at the deli section buying smoked chubs.

Florence Stanley. She is best known for playing Bernice Fish opposite Abe Vigoda. She was in an imported cheese ctore in Queens NYC. She was sampling the cheeses. For the record she had a very handsome, much younger companion/husband?

Years later i actually met a very, very ancient Abe Vigoda walking along with a younger woman holdinh him under his right arm. Mark Feuerstein jogging along Columbus Avenue. He had a hot "package".

Kenny Price (late 70s' in PA)

Still living....

by Anonymousreply 235March 16, 2015 6:27 PM

Aunt Jemima, Uncle Ben and Betty Crocker

Jane Jacket was at several orphanages this past week. Time to restock the freezer.

by Anonymousreply 237March 16, 2015 7:44 PM

When I was in college... 1987... literally ran into Bo Derek at a Macy's mens dept in Santa Barbara...while going through shirts on a rack. John Derek was on the other side and glared at me. Bo Derek was very kind and sweet and was unbelievably beautiful in person. She looked like she had been carved out of marble. Just gorgeous. They then went over to the underwear area and she kept telling him what kinds he needed and generally was taking good care of him.

by Anonymousreply 238March 16, 2015 9:27 PM

Went to a movie at Landmark in the Westside Pavilion in LA yesterday afternoon (a documentary called "Salt of the Earth"--about the famous Brazilian/French photographer Sebastiao Salgado and directed by Wim Wenders--worth seeing if it's your thing). Anyway, Diane Keaton was standing around in the lobby talking to some white-haired guy in a European style motorcycle jacket (white/red leather) and jeans. She was wearing a monk-style hat with a wide brim, which she kept on throughout the entire movie! She sat in the first row and there were stadium seats. Was wondering if maybe her hair is thinning?

She was very animated while talking to this guy (who looked like a typical pretentious LA asshole), but I think they were part of a group--not a couple. As usual, she had her clothes covering her neck. She looks EXACTLY like she looks on TV and in movies. So if you're dying to see her, the concession person told me she goes there all the time (Pico & Westwood Blvd. for the non-locals.)

R157. Typo, of course. And Kurt always has been cool, and Goldie is a cunt. And Kate is a super cunt.

by Anonymousreply 244March 29, 2015 8:50 PM

In the mid-late 80's I saw Karen Ackers (twice) in the Safeway on the west side of Wisconsin Avenue, not far from the Cathedral. She sort of looked like a regular shopper, only with exquisite cheekbones. As I recall, she was always doing a big shopping....I think she was raising two or three sons.

I did not say hello!

by Anonymousreply 245April 10, 2016 6:45 PM

Back in the 80's I would see James Beard and Julia Child in Balducci's

by Anonymousreply 246April 10, 2016 6:51 PM

Oh more adventures in DC - I was once waiting for a friend at National Airport, 1989 I believe, and I saw Coretta Scott King arriving with a female friend.

I yelled out "Hello, Ma'am!" without having much time to think.

She looked right at me, gave me a big smile, and nodded in greeting.

I had tears in my eyes.

by Anonymousreply 247April 10, 2016 6:56 PM

Kk, this is not a grocery store.. but I once saw Joan Fontaine, (quite up close!) at the B. Dalton Book Store that used to be on Fifth Ave in mid-town.

It must have been 1978 and she was there to promote her autobiography, "No Bed of Roses." I remember the staff was giving her instructions on how to proceed, and she was listening attentively.

She caught me staring at her in utter fascination, and she gave me a nice smile.

I remember she had her blonde hair in a bun, and was wearing a lovely two piece suit. I hear someone whisper "That's a Chanel!"

by Anonymousreply 248April 10, 2016 7:02 PM

R202, he resigned to avoid impeachment. They probably didn't want to draw attention to themselves.

by Anonymousreply 249April 11, 2016 12:58 AM

I forgot about this one:

Phylicia Rashad about 10-15 years ago in Mrs Greens on the Post Road in Eastchester NY. She was doing a play in NY and was FAT. Pushing two little kids in a cart, she kept talking to them -- they weren't listening. I felt she was talking so someone would recognize her, her voice was recognizable not her appearance. I ignored her.

by Anonymousreply 250April 11, 2016 2:02 AM

Richard Simmons. He was buying broccoli. I imagine it gave him the farts later.

by Anonymousreply 251April 11, 2016 2:04 AM

Paulina Porizkova in the produce section. It was weird because I was listening to The Cars. I know she's a model, so obviously she's considered attractive, but I was really taken aback at how beautiful she was in person.

A few years ago I saw Tyler Christopher shopping at a Fry's in Gilbert , Arizona . He was gorgeous with these beautiful pouty lips but very short (I'm 5'6 & he was maybe 2 inches taller than me , tops) . He was wearing a tight t-shirt , jeans , and flip flops . I was standing in front of him in line and didn't recognize him. The people behind us did recognize him & asked for a picture . He was nice about but seemed shy & embarrassed that he was recognized ;he just got really quiet and whispered "sure , but can we do it outside ? " the people told me they had seen Stevie Wonder a few days earlier at a Whole Foods . Don't know if any events were going on at that time but do know TC 's mom is Choctaw Indian and there are a lot in Arizona . He is one gorgeous piece of ass - very trim and muscular ,just a tight package . Nice feet too.

I'm not sure which thread I posted these on previously, so my apologies if this is a duplicate post. My sightings:

Adam Carolla at CVS in Burbank. He walked in as my friend and I were leaving. Very sad vibes.

Sandra Bernhard ran her cart into me at the Studio City Whole Foods. She was busy talking to her daughter, a toddler at the time, and barely looked up when she apologized.

Other Whole Foods sightings: I stood in line behind Jay Leno, but it wasn't a big deal to me, because I see him a lot, driving his jalopies around the Valley. My Aspergers client told him that one of his cars had "a big butt" and Jay laughed.

Miles O'Brien confronted me for staring at him in the tea aisle. I had been trying to figure out where I knew him from, assuming he was a neighbor. He said, "HELLO?!" I was mortified and apologized to him later in the parking lot. I never told him that I didn't recognize him until he yelled at me.

Wayne Knight slammed his cart into my shin at Whole Foods, but acted so spaced out that I wasn't sure if he even realized it. I saw him again later, at the Jo Ann Fabrics up the street, browsing while his English girlfriend shopped. I asked her if he minded being approached by fans and she said he loves it. I chatted with him for a few minutes and he blushed- very shy guy.

Spotted while I worked at Bed, Bath and Beyond (again, Studio City): Dan, the Del Taco pitchman, who handed out coupons for free tacos.

Mr. T, who handed out autographed photos of his son, Little t (yes, it was signed with a lower-case t).

One of the Go Gos was a cunt to me because I didn't know which one she was or that they were working on an album- she bought an ugly clearance shower curtain.

Pink brought a little yappy dog that shit on the floor. She offered to clean it up, which is very rare for anyone in CA to do.

Ashton Kutcher walked around the store repeatedly, talking on his cellphone.

Mimi from the Drew Carey Show patiently endured my coworker telling her for the 8 zillionth time how much he loved her on the show.

The "Can you hear me now?" guy and his girlfriend shopped in matching jackets and even more disturbingly, with matching haircuts.

Kobe Bryant helped my coworker put towels in the overstock shelves above her. He liked to sneak up on employees regularly and do that. He was very nice and always laughing about something.

Billy Idol stalked me and my transsexual coworker throughout the store as we bitched about our paychecks. My coworker had a bad experience with hormone treatment in Mexico and never was able to finish transitioning. Although technically she was MTF, she still wore a Fernando name badge and expected to be referred to as such.

Around town: Chris Elliott and his wife walked past me on Ventura Blvd. He is better looking in person than on film, although that isn't much of an improvement. Kelly Osbourne and a friend also passed me in the same city block, but on a different day.

Michael Campbell, legendary guitar player for the Heartbreakers and the Dirty Knobs chatted with me after his son's band played at a local dive. He's almost elfin in size and was closely monitored by his wife, who supposedly goes everywhere with him so he doesn't philander.

Benmont Tench, another Heartbreaker, hanging around a rack of bargain suits in an Encino shop. Beautiful eyes, looked very confused as I chased my aforementioned Aspy client past the window.

I live in LA my list is very long. Olsen twins at Whole foods Fabio at petco Diana Ross at Ralphs, twice Jack Black at Ralphs Ben Stein at Pavillions Amy Adams at Pavillions Rick Shroder at 711 Aaron Eckhart at Bristol Farms That trainer (bob?) from biggest Loser Trent Reznor at Bristol Farms And a ton more I can't remember

by Anonymousreply 256April 11, 2016 5:28 AM

Most of the original Saturday Night Live people would come into the Walgreens across from Second City in Chicago. When John Belushi was there filming Blues Bros. he would come in almost every night and buy a big jug of vodka.

by Anonymousreply 257April 11, 2016 5:48 AM

Laura Dern Laura Dern-ing all over that restaurant/grocery store in Brentwood. Can't remember. The name.

I have always been a big Fleetwood Mac fan and got a kick out of seeing Lindsey Buckingham at the West Hollywood Pavilions in the late 1990;s circa the DANCE era.......he was buying fresh produce..........used to see Carl Reiner and Robert Duvall there quite often............

by Anonymousreply 259April 11, 2016 6:13 AM

Oh I forgot about another. One time I was in line at Gristede's and this guy came up behind me and started to put an enormous amount of catfood on the conveyor belt. I put down one of those dividers to give him maximum space. He nodded and smiled at me and I realized it was Macaulay Culkin. Mac's kitties prefer Whiskas.

[quote]I live in Hastings, Nebraska. I've never seen a famous person before - let alone one shopping in the grocery store.

I know this is an old post but I second the truck stop suggestion from the person upthread. State fairs are a good place to see famous people in the Midwest, too, which is how I can confirm that Lee Greenwood is indeed shorter than hell.

Surely Hastings U has events with famous people? I live in a university town in the Midwest and we see the occasional famous person out shopping or eating dinner.

by Anonymousreply 261April 11, 2016 6:47 AM

Not quite supermarket's, but I came within a half-step of spilling a full cup of hot coffee all over Malcolm McDowell in a crowded coffee/scones/muffins place. Seeing him startled was fun. Same town, Ojai, Larry Hagman in an ice cream parlor.

W. Hagman, he had a great rep for being friendly and I thought, 'Screw it; I don't care if this is lame," told him my mom was a huge fan and she'd be thrilled to get a pic of him and her son....

Lucky me; I was with a friend who was a terrific photographer and had expensive equipment. Hagman was happy to oblige and took off his Cazal sunglasses, my friend blasted off a few frames, both of us looked great in one of them and my mom was beyond happy to get that picture in the mail.

by Anonymousreply 262April 11, 2016 6:59 AM

I'm jealous about the Hagman encounter. Sometimes I will sit through I Dream of Jeannie episodes simply because he was so cute. Apparently he was kind of a bohemian/counter culture sort of guy in real life.

I saw this lady at a French equivalent of Whole Foods, some years back. Nothing much to say, she's not that famous even in France, although she's won her share of prestigious awards. She's mostly a theatre actress.

Joan Collins and her husband Percy Gibson in the Food Hall at Marks and Spencers, Oxford Street, London about two years ago. Heard her say to him "You know, these are really very good" but I couldn't see what she was pointing at. She looked beautiful. When I was talking to a shop assistant in the store later I mentioned seeing her and he said that she and her husband were in the store quite often and that she was always polite and nice to staff and had posed for selfies with several staff members.

by Anonymousreply 265April 11, 2016 8:38 AM

In the 90s I saw Rupert Everett 2x in the gay sauna in Geneva. That's a kind of supermarket, isn't it?

by Anonymousreply 266April 11, 2016 10:10 AM

Cool story, R138. I have to say that guy looks like a creep/pervert/pedophile (or other type of creep). And I'm rarely wrong when it comes to creepy vibes. Thanks for the story under the tree in the parking lot.

by Anonymousreply 267April 11, 2016 10:25 AM

R133 - Do supermarkets let any celebrity walk out the door with free groceries? If that story is true, its perplexing. Maybe she never shops for groceries, and gets other things for free, such as clothes? In fact, I highly doubt any shop or boutique gives away free shit to celebrities. Public relations staff might set them up for free shit but I doubt even the biggest star can expect to walk into any retail establishment and walk out with free merchandise with the exception of Winona Ryder.

Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal in a shop in Park Slope on Christmas Eve a few years ago. Low key and unassuming.

by Anonymousreply 270April 11, 2016 11:18 AM

A couple of years ago, when my mother-in-law was recovering from surgery, I was helping her shop and we saw Armand Assante twice in the same day. First, in Kohl's (of all places). He was ahead of us in line and seemed to make a very big deal about not letting his girlfriend see his PIN number when he paid. A couple of hours later, we saw him (minus the girlfriend) in a nearby supermarket. He gave us a rather annoyed glance as if he thought we were following him.

About ten years ago, I saw David Bowie buying fruit at a produce stand on a side street in Chinatown.

by Anonymousreply 271April 11, 2016 11:29 AM

r133- she's a cheap ass- a work acquaintance of mine works with her and what she pays people is disgusting- it's all because they can put her as a celeb that they work with. And he goes with it too.

I saw Jason Schwartzman at the Whole Foods at Fairfax& Santa Monica. He is elfin in person.

by Anonymousreply 272April 11, 2016 11:30 AM

Jerry Seinfeld at the Zabar's deli on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. He lives just a few blocks away. He was buying a marble rye, I believe.

by Anonymousreply 273April 11, 2016 12:19 PM

I could have sworn I saw Melanomia Trump buying a huge crate of DEPENDS for the Donald at Costco! She looked really hot and slutty, and I was dying to ask her but she spoke almost no English! She was wearing the smallest shorts with her butt cheeks hanging out with high heels!

Jennifer Lawrence just before the first Hunger Games came out, Before she became Jlaw. This was at the Fresh Market on Rudy Lane in Louisville. Her hair was dark. Her skin was porcelain. She was with a taller girl with blond hair. They drove off in a white VW suv.

R-31 I love that story! You are so lucky to have that happen to you.

by Anonymousreply 278April 11, 2016 2:36 PM

Lauren Bacall shopping for lox at Zabars circa 1975. She was wearing a polyester pant suit. My husband and I were thrilled and appalled at the same time. She had bitchy resting face before it was a "thing". No one approached her to chat or to ask for an autograph. We just kind of lurked in her general direction but were too intimidated to do much else;) We lived on West 74th not far from The Dakota.

by Anonymousreply 279April 11, 2016 2:43 PM

Donna Mills at a Piggly Wiggly in Naples Florida in the early 80's. She had her hair in a bun and wore sunglasses but it was her. She bought more cosmetics than groceries, though I did notice Otis Spunkmeyer cookies and muffins in her basket.

I saw Goldie and one of her daughters at Trancas Market, walking back across the street to their home on the beach. Never saw Kurt, but tons of celebrities would shop there and at Starbuck's.

by Anonymousreply 281April 11, 2016 2:53 PM

by Anonymousreply 282April 11, 2016 3:04 PM

Saw Don Knotts at a Safeway once and wouldn't have given him a second look if he didn't have those bug eyes staring at me.

by Anonymousreply 283April 11, 2016 3:12 PM

I saw John Waters at the grocery store, and it was pretty memorable for me. I'd seen him out and about a few times, and have stood in line with him at a bar or two but this was different. He was in jeans and sneakers, for one (!),( the Vans Iron Maiden slip-ons, but still!) and a long sleeved red shirt. Every other time I'd seen him he'd been dressed to the nines, but I guess even John Waters says fuck it when heading to Giant. I slowly followed him for awhile, then left him to shop in peace.

by Anonymousreply 284April 11, 2016 3:15 PM

I have seen a ton (work on films, so we end up living nearby the cast, when on site), but the most memorable was as a child in the 80s. Mr. T. He was not making an appearance there, but had on the jewelry, and had a woman and a big man with him. His cart had grapes, yogurt, and Dr. Pepper in it.

I think my dad was encouraged that I got so excited over a butch guy. He didn't realize I was more interested in his jewelry and mohawk.

by Anonymousreply 285April 11, 2016 3:20 PM

r282 well shit, it wasn't Kate Hudson. It was a young blond chick. guess it wasn't her daughter, but it was Goldie. People yelled her name, the insufferable cunts.

I also got a chance to walk around her back yard when the place was put up for sale. Nice, but all the houses on the beach there are right next to each other.

by Anonymousreply 286April 11, 2016 3:30 PM

I the early 90's I was working at the UT-Austin bookstore and Diane Keaton came to the counter with a bunch of mags. She had on a stupid hat and scarves and was wearing long opera gloves, all white. She was not friendly. Some students recognized her but she was not having it.

by Anonymousreply 287April 11, 2016 4:15 PM

Lived in Brentwood TN in the early 90's so I saw many country singer/stars, like someone up thread said. The most memorable(usually at a Kroger) were:

Dolly Parton: very petite and freakish looking. polite to anyone who approached. genuine.

The Judd mother and Ashley: Very cartoonish looking even in person and with "everyday" make-up. Tiny and fake nice in the way southerners are. Loved the attention. She would have been a difficult mother. Ashley was taller than I thought she would be, 5'8". resting bitch face but gorgeous skin. I didn't get a snotty vibe from her, more reserved. polite and patient with people approaching her mom. this was before 'Ruby in Paradise' so no one knew her as an actress.

Jimmy Buffet looks every bit a worn out beach bum and is very unassuming. Many of the Christians musicians ate and socialized at his restaurant Pargo's.

Dez Dickerson and his family. Recognized him from Prince's band and was surprised to see that he wife was white. Mixed couples still got a lot of side-eye in TN in the 90's. Also they're a short family, Dez is maybe 5'5" the wife was taller but it was the heels. 2 cute sons.

Duncan Jones(Bowie's son) . He was skinny and awkward looking w/ short spiky mousy brown hair. . All teeth and maybe 5'10". I found it weird that he looked just like his dad but wasn't at all appealing or attractive like Bowie. Weird how that happens. He was studying for a Phd at Vanderbilt at the time.

Julia Child in Star Market in Cambridge, trailed by her husband as she grabbed King Arthur Flour. I saw them on another occasion walking through Harvard Yard, in the same formation.

Joan Cusack at the market in the small town in southwest Michigan where I have my weekend house.

by Anonymousreply 290April 11, 2016 6:23 PM

I used to see Gene Shalit all the time around Fifth Ave in NYC. Like at least 3 times!

by Anonymousreply 291April 11, 2016 9:45 PM

Sort of funny - in January of 1983, on a very cold but sunny day, I was walking north on the west side of Fifth Ave, and walking south on the east side of Fifth was none other than OJ Simpson accompanied by two tall beautiful women. All three had on long chic-looking winter coats. One woman was blonde, one brunette.....Nicole Brown and one of her sisters perhaps?

A well dressed African-American man walking near me yelled "Juice!" and OJ smiled and waved.

Speaking of OJ.... I grew up watching his first team, the Buffalo Bills. Flash forward 10-15 years and my sister, who must have been about 20, sees him at a shopping center in Palo Alto, Calif.

My sister is a massive sports fan, probably recognized him more for football than for movies and commercials, hadn't realized that I'd outgrown getting autographs, politely asked him if she could get an autograph for her younger brother who grew up watching the Bills. He was happy to oblige, asked if we'd lived in Buffalo (nope, Toronto), was she a student at Stanford, etc.

(Sis was never going to be a model, but she wasn't hideous, exercised a few times a week, walked everywhere, was at her ideal weight, did have a body with curves.)

OJ signed a nice autograph, complete with "Peace to you;" didn't try anything like, "I have some little footballs I keep in the trunk of my car so I can sign 'em if people ask so let's...; was simply friendly and the perfect gentleman.

Actor Charles Dance shops at Waitrose on Holloway Road in Islington, London. Doesn't buy anything, just hangs around by the frozen peas gossiping loudly with other luvvies. Some of Redgraves also appear on occasion.

One last story - I had seen the documentary "He Makes Me Feel Like Dancing" about the NYC Ballet star Jacques D'Amboise on tv...this is in late '83. So the next day, I am on the way to a job interview, and who do I see but Jacques D'Amboise himself walking on the street beside me. I actually had the guts to stop and say to him, "I saw you on tv last night...I really enjoyed the documentary."

We walked a bit together; he was terribly nice and asked me what I did. I told him I was a grad student NYU and other stuff. Eventually, I was embarrassed (and also possibly about to be late for my interview) and told him I had to go and ran ahead.

This was years and years before I saw him in the classic MGM musical film "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers"!!!

Goldblatt's Deli in LA - saw Courtney Cox ordering a large tuna fish tray for a tea for her daughter; She was sweet and laughing with the kid who was trying to stuff it in the back of her jeep.

Dyan Cannon at Ralph's - had an assistant with her, but she insisted on pushing the cart as a sort of walker. Hardly anything in it and she had a computer print out grocery list which she ordered the assistant to check off each item.

Does anyone remember the blonde twins, Audrey and Judy Landers? I saw Judy in the produce section of Grand Union about 20 years ago. Looked exactly as she did on TV, which is unusual since celebs are usually much tinier in person.

Sally Field, Gelson's Market, Pacific Palisades, 1993. I was 26. While looking for a ripe cantaloupe, I was aware that a very short woman, in a baseball cap, had walked up next to me, and started looking for a ripe melon, too. After we had both picked up/tested a few, she lamented, "None of these are ripe, are they?" Her voice -- I recognized it instantly. It felt like I turned in slow motion to see Sally Field, holding a cantaloupe, to her nose, with a slightly annoyed/perplexed expression on her face.

Okay bitches. Sometime in the late 70s I was in the greeting card section of Liberty House and noticed a woman who looked like a very well-tanned and simply dressed Cher. I dismissed the thought but a moment later a woman came running down the aisle screaming "Cher's here! Cher's here!" And she was.

Former unofficial first lady of France Julie Gayet, and at the time discreet cinema actress. On her bike with two children, very hippie chic. Honestly the most beautiful woman I'd ever seen. I liked her as an actress, but she was simply radiant. She was not very famous then, you'd have to have seen her films, and none were big hits and she didn't do a lot of them either. Whole Foods in Studio City, on Coldwater and Magnolia, is another good place for celeb spotting. Sandra Bernhard ran her cart into me while fussing over her toddler daughter, Jay Leno apologized for taking too long at the check out, Wayne Knight (Newman) also struck me with his cart and apologized profusely, and Colm Meaney (Star Trek: the Next Generation) pointedly greeted me because he caught me staring at him.

Bed, Bath and Beyond, also in Studio City, is another great place to spot celebs. While employed there, I saw Kathy Kinney (Mimi on Drew Carey Show), was stalked by Billy Idol while talking to my trans coworker, almost ran into Ashton Kutcher, (yapping on his cell phone on Valentine's Day), cleaned up Pink's dog poop, gave side-eye to that "Can you hear me now?" guy and Mr. T (who wore a fishing hat every time he came in), rang up uber cunt Charlotte Caffey (GoGos drummer) as she purchased an ugly shower curtain, watched Shaq put a few towels up for a coworker who couldn't find her ladder, and watched Paul Stanley sleaze all over a barely-legal, dog faced coworker.

Tina Fey at Fairway, same neighborhood. She was pushing a cart, with her kids in tow. She looked like a really nice mom. No fuss.

Terrence Stamp at Whole Foods, Columbus Circle, right after that store opened. He was not calling attention to himself in any way, but I noticed him because he has an unusual, striking look.

Not so famous but fun: Dan Gauthier, a former soap star, a few years ago at Fairway in the express line. He still looked very, very good--like a hot dad.

Whole Foods 3rd and Fairfax area across from the Grove - years ago. Noticed a strange older lady rambling to herself in the produce section. Fidgeting around. Thin body sinewy body. Tight tight face, Long long blondish white hair spilling out of a ball cap, skin white as snow, in yoga type pants, long sleeve shirt jacket, looking like she was fresh from a workout, or yoga, or walking. Just an odd looking duck. Then this weird thing walked over to the meat/fish department, and started barking orders to the fish man, not sure specifically, When he wrapped the fish, she complained he was doing it wrong, or it was the wrong kind of fish, something. He stood there perplexed like whats your deal lady? She raised her voice slammed her hands on the top of the counter of fish, and was saying FORGET IT the Italian way, hands flaying everywhere. Then she scurried away. Odd. At this time I had no idea who it was. Just another weird LA person thats fun to watch when they let their crazy out in public. Maybe less then a few minutes later she comes back to the section, goes to the fish department again AS IF THE EXCHANGE HADN'T HAPPENED, it was a new dawn a new day a new life and she was feeling good. There was a lady and her young daughter in front of her ordering, at first she tried to go in front, but then noticed the man helping the woman with her kid first, and the lady apologized and smiled and got behind her. When she smiled, I noticed her big ol veneers, and face, as I was a bit closer... IT WAS FAYE DUNAWAY. As Faye waited, she started to jog gently in place, seconds away from doing jumping jacks. Then she started talking to the woman in front of her being helped, the lady wasnt really paying attention to Faye, but Faye kept jogging in place, saying how she was just in the dentist office, and something about endorphins etc etc. She was batty and nutty as hell. Talking to herself, unable to stand still, getting angry, yelling, then back, happy, jogging in place... was just an odd roller coaster. But was Faye Dunaway!!!!!!! It was in such contrast to how sane and normal she acted when she was on that crappy reality show with Vivica A Fox called Starlet in 2005. Which was around the time this happened.

by Anonymousreply 362September 25, 2017 7:47 AM

I saw David Hasselhoff at a Hall & Oates concert at the Forum in LA waaay back in Dec 1984! He was with an entourage of people all around him. He was dressed in black jeans and black leather jacket with a deep red silk shirt. He looked right at me and smiled. Very handsome, beautiful eyes, and appeared very tall and thin. Did not watch "Knightrider" tho I knew who he was.

Also during that same time period I worked as a Directory Assistance Operator ("411") for GTE of California and one of our service areas was Palm Springs. I had a call one day and it was a older gentleman with a flirtatious manner who complimented me on my "telephone voice", said I was "very sweet" and asked me if l ever did any singing. He was chatty and wanted to keep talking to me, tho I had other calls. Right before he hung up, he told me he was Frank Sinatra, and asked if I knew of him. He seemed flattered that a young woman even knew who he was. I made his day!

Matt Lauer was in line right in front of me at a very crowded Whole Foods in Columbus Circle NYC. He had a suit on. He was pushing a very full cart and was shopping alone. Lots of produce in the cart. I remember being shocked that NOBODY else seemed to notice him. I didn't want to say anything but at some point he must have felt me staring because he turned around and smiled. I was embarrassed.

In an LA Whole Foods I saw Anna Kendrick with some guy at the prepared foods counter. I remember thinking how insanely small she was - not just skinny but short and elfen. The guy she was with was looked rather similar.

Linda Evans in Edmonds, Washington - don't recall the name of the market, but she wore sunglasses and a large floppy hat and was with a younger guy who bagged the produce and carried her purse for her. Around 1990. I asked for an autograph and she told me "Oh I'm sorry Miss Evans just left."

Brian Dennehy, Jean Smart (wearing all white) at Trader Joe's in Toluca Lake where I also saw Parker Stevenson and the UPS guy in Legally Blonde. Had a conversation with Laurence Fishburne about pecan pie while in line and gave him my Cajun grandmother's secret recipe. Had a fun conversation with Brett Butler in the produce section at Ralph's. I always tell people, if you want to see celebrities in LA go to the markets in the neighborhoods they are most likely to live in.

Not really famous, but when I lived n Vegas in the mid 80s one could always spot the show girls in the produce section, they were statuesque tall, wearing short shorts, tank tops, high heels and full makeup doing comparison shopping on salad greens. They looked like exotic birds wandering around the marshes. This was usually about 3:00 AM in the morning.

This didn't happen to me, but to the Scottish professor whose farm abuts Paul McCartney's in Scotland. He (Paul) was in a Woolworth's in, I think St. John's Wood, and Paul and Heather Mills were having an incandescent screaming fight over the colour of jumper to buy for baby Beatrice. The professor remarked that Paul could buy the entire franchise, and here he was arguing about the colour of a jumper. The professor and I sat across from each other on a British Airways flight London Heathrow to Seattle in Club World 14th February 2009. He was on his way to some conference. Soon after we were seated we got to talking. He told me he lived in Scotland. I asked him where. He demured. I said Argylshire? He said yes. I said Campbeltown? He said yes, and how did I know about it. I began humming 'Hey Jude' sotto voce. He was fairly taken aback that anybody from The Colonies would know the specifics. He told me a few things about the McCartneys, nothing salacious. I refrained from telling him I was in love with Paul when I was eleven.

Mario Van Peebles/Zabar’s/2000’s.

This story is stupid, yet nice. Went to a bodega w/Marc Maron so he could buy nasal spray (really) and I could buy beer, before hanging out at my place. Mid ‘90’s. I worked at a comedy club, I had a huge crush on him and volunteered to take him to radio promo spots, etc. We hit it off in a kind of fun, playful, “hey, you’re a really interesting person in this lame town” kinda way so I went to watch his sets and we “accidentally” met up after he was done for the night. (I was 100% stalking him.) He was incredibly nice, engaging, easily could have taken advantage of me but didn’t. Love him. Regret to this day not hooking up with him.

Also took Tom Rhodes for bagels in the mid-‘90’s when he was still moderately hot.

But, the question wasn’t “who the fuck have you taken shopping” so I’ll sit down.

several years ago I was run over by Sally Jesse Raphael at a Ralph’s. Grocery store. She wheeled her cart into me while I was shopping for avocados. I yelled ouch because she wheeled into my left side. When I looked to see who was responsible for it and saw it was SJR, I was flabbergasted when she replied “get the fuck out of here”!
