In 1998, when Margaret fell and broke her hip, Wrangler sued New York City for $1M for "loss of conjugal relations," so evidently they did.

It used to be said about her that she never wore underpants. Lusty lady. She and Wrangler both had over-bleached, thinning hair.

I would hardly call the invention of some shyster lawyer evidence of pussysex.

They began their romance way back in 1976, and were married in 1994. Of course they had sex. Why are you all so adamantly against the possibility that he found out that he was ultimately powerless to resist sweet, sweet pussy?
Even gay men must succumb to it, eventually.

Here's another Jack Wrangler video, prior to his conversion to heterosexuality:
by Anonymous | reply 18 | January 7, 2015 9:39 PM |
R18 I don't think he ever converted--I recall him saying as much in the documentary. She insisted he stop having sex with men (which he says he complied with, but who knows), but he never said he then began to have sex with her. They were companionate spouses, maybe even romantic, but I doubt it went into the realm of the erotic.

Being able to fuck on camera doesn't mean it's what you do privately.

R41, Jack Wrangler was a gay porn star in the '70s, and Margaret Whiting was a popular singer of the '40s. Jack married her, despite his being gay.

He made it quite clear in his autobiography he was all gay and took the "China Sisters" role as an acting challenge because even though he was doing low low budget porn, he still considered himself an actor and was just curious. His father was a producer in Hollywood. If you look at the scene where he fucks a girl for the first time, it's hardly erotic, very rough and another woman is doing him with a strap on at the same time.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | January 9, 2015 2:46 AM |
I knew Jack and Margaret through friends and had dinner with them a few times. My conclusion was that they really loved each other. And it was unlikely that they had sex on an ongoing basis.
The second time we had dinner, there was a gay couple present who had never met them before. (We were all guests of the friends through whom we'd met.). Jack, who was introduced as Jack Stillman, was doing all he could think of to get the two guys to ask him what he had done for a living. Having recognized him, they tortured him by not falling for it.

I don't why he was an gay icon, he comes off a self loathing fag that could make peace with being gay and living a gay life could not be a happy one therefore he sorta willed himself bisexual and ended up living a sexless heterosexual life. Sorta very tragic. I wouldn't want to end up like him.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | January 9, 2015 1:59 PM |

OK, but he did a lot more straight porn after that. And it's notoriously less well-paying (for men) than gay porn, so why did he keep on doing it?
Curiously, I don't recall him ever performing in a bisexual (MMF) video.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | January 9, 2015 4:26 PM |
[quote] And it's notoriously less well-paying (for men) than gay porn, so why did he keep on doing it?
Jack Wrangler used to do jerk off shows in gay bars. Are you really asking why he'd do low paying gigs?
by Anonymous | reply 61 | January 9, 2015 4:32 PM |
R61 What I'm saying is, given the chance between doing gay porn and straight porn, why would he not have chosen the better-paying option, especially if it matched up with his sexual orientation?
by Anonymous | reply 62 | January 9, 2015 4:37 PM |
Did he give up gay porn for straight porn? Or do them simultaneously?
One reason gay porn actors cross over is that they've become "old hat" in gay porn. Jeremy Bilding is now Ryan Driller, for instance. Straight male porn actors don't have to contend with "UGH. This bitch again. I'm only interested if he's getting bukkaked/gangbanged/strangled" because they're just a prop. The downside is that being a prop means they're paid much less. The upside is that they can work in straight porn for much longer than they can do so in gay porn.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | January 9, 2015 4:44 PM |
There were only so many opportunities for gay porn stars back then, r62. We didn't have the internet or even home video back then, and there were only so many porno theaters that would show gay porn. The market and industry you're imagining simply did not exist.
Jack Wrangler did straight porn, jerkoff shows and married Margaret Whiting all for the same reason: to pay his bills. It's not really difficult to comprehend.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | January 9, 2015 4:51 PM |
Jeepers the L-der Gays are slipping. Jack Wrangler was also well know as a director of summer stock plays with older "stars" as the leads. He got the jobs because he was very good at keeping the old broads happy off-stage as well as on.

by Anonymous | reply 66 | January 9, 2015 5:40 PM |
He did some dinner theatre. He wasn't the George Abbott of the regions.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | January 9, 2015 5:41 PM |
Jack himself said,
[quote]I just couldn't live the gay lifestyle; it's too hard to live. But I think there's something to a gay man who has great sex with women.
[quote]When I got with Margaret, I knew I had to change course. She would have my bags packed and sitting outside the door when I got home at night and things like that. Plus I would go through massive guilt whenever I did go out with a guy and I was with her. So I finally said that's it. I went to her one night and said I'm never going to cheat on you again with anybody.
Seems like he was filled with internalized homophobia, but so many gay porn stars are, almost all, they desperately aspire to bisexuality. How he is considered a gay icon is beyond me. Maybe things were different back then.

But if you're gay be gay, why life an ersatz heterosexual married life rather than be in a loving sexually fulfilling relationship with someone that emboldens your sexuality rather than represses it?
I mean did it work for them,I have no idea, but to me as a gay man it seems almost sad and anti-gay and why would a man like that he held up as some revered statue of homosexuality?
by Anonymous | reply 72 | January 9, 2015 6:11 PM |
Jack Wrangler is not held up as a revered statue of homosexuality. He's hardly even held up as a gay porn icon - most older gays cite Jeff Stryker befor him.
He said that he couldn't be in a relationship with a guy because there would always be competition. That's a failing in him and his choices, not of "homosexual relations".
Most romantic relationships come down to companionship. I can't ger irate (even if I did care) that he seemed to find that with a w-w-w-w-woman.
I'll never do such a thing. But I don't think he betrayed the cause, any more than Tom Robinson or Stephen Daldry.

True. And the documentary on him was interesting. But he hasn't endured as an image - like a gay porn James Dean or something - possibly because while he was nice looking, he wasn't truly stunning.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | January 9, 2015 6:42 PM |
I find him better-looking (in his prime) than Stryker.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | January 9, 2015 6:53 PM |
I watched the documentary a while back. I don't really care that he ended up with a woman. What I do hate is when bi guys like Wrangler refer to themselves as gay and then go on about how much they love having sex with women. If they just said they were bi then no one would give a shit. It's narcissism pure and simple. They do it just to be a contrarian and draw attention to themselves.

Did Margaret Whiting eat Jack Wrangler's puss-he?
by Anonymous | reply 78 | January 11, 2015 7:48 PM |
I could never understand that why we, as the gay community, couldn't just leave them alone. For those who saw them in public, it was clear that there was a real relationship there, and that they had somehow figured out how to make it work. As they both got older, there seem to be less and less of a difference between them.
But on several occasions, I witnessed other people be quite rude to them, especially gay men. I once saw them onstage at a cabaret show, and some drunk guy yelled out "Show us your cock, Jack!" They ignored the comment, but I felt really embarrassed and ashamed. They were not "a joke".
imho

Okay: how is she not more of a thing on DL?
She married one of the legendary gay male pornstars from the Golden Age of Porn... after 3 previous marriages. Check.
She recorded the timeless Helen Lawson song that Susan Hayward lipsynchs to in VALLEY OF THE DOLLS. Check.
One of her songs plays over the end of JULIE & JULIA, arguably Meryl's last great film role. Check.
I don't know if she ever swam in the lady pond, but she's giving me mid-century Stanwyck-style soft butch realness here.

Whiting also co-starred in PARIS FOLLIES OF 1956, a solidly B musical, with human tripod/DL fave Forrest Tucker, who is pure sex onscreen (a long decade away from F TROOP).
It's a pretty awful backstage musical, but the songs aren't too bad.
Sadly, Whiting has been styled and photographed like someone's worst enemy. She looks horrible. It's no surprise she didn't have more of a movie career.

[quote]Her TV sitcom Those Whiting Girls (1955) with her sister, Barbara Whiting, served as a summer replacement for I Love Lucy (1951) in both 1955 and 1957.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | May 11, 2020 2:37 AM |
Maggie got plenty of meat. Her daughter Debbi is keeping Margaret's recorded legacy alive with re-released remasterings of her albums and radio shows, and Margaret's father's song catalog (Richard Whiting) still has some robust hits in it and yields income.
Margaret dated John Meyer (who dated Judy Garland at the end of her life) who wrote special material for her including the "4 Girls 4" title song R94, she also got with Si Zentner on tour with his orchestra. She seems to have made her peace with being around lots of show business men and making sure she was getting what she needed.
The odd thing is that Whiting never really got the weight off to be thin like a studio actress who sang (Garland, Day). Though she didn't do movies, she did variety shows, her series with her sister that was the I Love Lucy summer replacement...Margaret Whiting did more theatre than anyone remembers, from Gypsy to Wildcat to Plain and Fancy to Call Me Madam, all as a summer stock headlining star.
