WHET Vanessa Williams, the singer?

Vanessa Williams has a nice string of hits and then nothing.

Why did she stop recording?

by Anonymousreply 123May 11, 2021 3:41 PM

Singers like Vanessa Williams age out of the pop market even though they still have loads of talent. But she still works singing pops and the American Songbook with orchestras around the country, on TV (Ugly Betty, Desperate Housewives) on stage (recently "The Trip to Bountiful" in LA and Boston).

Singers like Vanessa must find other work beyond music when Gaga, Katy Perry, Rihanna, etc., take over.

Vanessa even had a couple of hits singing movie themes such as "Color of the Wind" from "Pocahontas," but now even those songs go to singers such as Idina Menzel as it did for "Frozen."

Looks like she's pretty fucking busy to me.

My favorite Vanessa Williams song

by Anonymousreply 3January 4, 2015 8:05 PM

She ruined her music career herself when she said that her audience didn't appreciate her so she was recording "more adult" music--mainly repetitive ballads that all felt derivative of Colors of the Wind and, at best, mid-tempo numbers. The funky dance music of her first two albums was forgotten and she turned into a musical bore, aiming for AC success and having it--but only for awhile and at serious cost to her coolness factor. Her last few albums have been poorly produced; she remains a great singer but she needs to loosen up and have fun. As for R2's stupid tag, no one outside of the theater world has her latest work on their radar. Theater-famous is less than even Daytime TV famous. I bet more people know who plays a character on Bold & Beautiful than can tell you Vanessa Williams was in Into the Woods or Trip to Bountiful.

by Anonymousreply 4January 4, 2015 8:20 PM

R4 Exactly. She's a great singer, but she strayed away from what made her a success (dance/pop) after her first two albums. It's like she was constantly trying to recapture "Save the Best for Last" with everything that she did after that song was a success, and she got incredibly boring. It's a shame because she made good pop/dance music. Nobody gives a shit about these boring ballads and standards remakes that she does now.

by Anonymousreply 5January 4, 2015 8:35 PM

Vanessa's recording career arc was quite interesting. She has a nice, trained voice but nothing overly impressive. She got her start in the era of New Jack Swing & House music when a lot of singers had a hit 1 year and then fell off the map in the next. She was 1 of the only ones to actually make it past the early 90s and thrive during the mid-90s by changing to easy-listening songs. Of course her last big hit was "Colors of the Wind" and then music tastes changed and she was finished.

I'm glad to see her acting has continued though.

by Anonymousreply 6January 4, 2015 8:38 PM

R6 Why doesn't she try to hookup with some current pop/R&B producers? Or is she too old and too late for that?

by Anonymousreply 7January 4, 2015 8:43 PM

[quote]Theater-famous is less than even Daytime TV famous. I bet more people know who plays a character on Bold & Beautiful than can tell you Vanessa Williams was in Into the Woods or Trip to Bountiful.

R4. For some--perhaps even many actors, singers, etc., fame is the thing. But for others, the opportunity to keep working is what matters as the years go on--and Vanessa has continued to work and make a living. The hot level of fame is difficult to sustain over time.

I too liked Vanessa's pop and dance tunes of the '80s and '90s. But she's now nearly 52--and just how long was she going to continue recording dance tunes? The only ones of a certain age who successfully still do that are Madonna and Cher. And Vanessa never had that kind of fame or those kind of devoted fans.

I saw Vanessa in concert this past summer performing at the San Diego Symphony Summer Pops. She was great. She still has it. Yes, she performed several ballads and a couple of her former hits. I would have liked more of the dance tunes, but she was quite good, talented, terrific voice and a great stage presence and rapport with the audience.

by Anonymousreply 8January 4, 2015 8:50 PM

I remember her singing "Happy Days Are Here Again" at the Miss America pageant

by Anonymousreply 9January 4, 2015 8:54 PM

R7 I do think it's the age thing. btw a little trivia-she was originally going to have the song "Girlfriend" on her debut cd. The song was written for her and she was working out how it would sound. One day, Pebbles happened to walk in, heard what Vanessa was working on, and went to the label to negotiate them taking the song from Vanessa and giving it to her! It ended up being Pebbles' debut single and reaching #5 on the hot 100. Pebbles took advantage of the fact that Vanessa was pregnant at the time that both were recording their debut albums. Even though Vanessa had started first, Pebbles ended up coming out first due to that. Vanessa obviously was pissed but couldn't do anything about it and both women went on to have some hits.

R8 agreed

by Anonymousreply 10January 4, 2015 8:55 PM

Vanessa Williams = beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 11January 4, 2015 8:57 PM

[quote]I too liked Vanessa's pop and dance tunes of the '80s and '90s. But she's now nearly 52--and just how long was she going to continue recording dance tunes?

I think what people are wondering is why she gave up the pop/dance so early - she was only 28 when she recorded her last proper pop/dance album. Hardly old. And her chart positions prove that the boring adult contemporary shit was not a good idea - her first two albums and the singles from them were very successful, but as soon as the third album came around (when she started getting boring), her career started to go in decline.

by Anonymousreply 12January 4, 2015 8:58 PM

First of all, go fuck yourself R4. Second, I linked to that interview because Williams always wanted to pursue a theatre career and has a theatre degree, long before MISS AMERICA or the rest. The pop stuff and movie career was a lucrative foray, as was her TV success, but her eye has always been on the stage. Having starred in SHOW BOAT with the NY Phil (filmed for PBS), plus THE TRIP TO BOUNTIFUL on Broadway and on tour as well as AFTER MIDNIGHT on Broadway all in one year certainly proves she has succeeded at what she set out to do from the start and that's where her heart is. She could pump out any kind of music in the world and it wouldn't matter because the recording industry is dead, especially for anyone over 40. She's no fool and she knows where she excels: Broadway/theatre. Anybody who knows anything about entertainment knows that that's where the true talent is anyway and she is truly talented.

by Anonymousreply 13January 4, 2015 9:02 PM

After the success of Janet's "Control" in the mid '80s, record companies and audiences were paying attention to female dance pop artists of color, and she jumped on that bandwagon with much success. She's a triple threat, which is always a good thing in show biz, and it didn't hurt that she was (and still is) beautiful. She had the crowd jumping during this early Soul Train performance...

by Anonymousreply 14January 4, 2015 9:07 PM

One of the all time great survival stories in show biz, no doubt about it. Those pictures (many sets) were almost comically gross, not some beauty spread in Playboy by a long shot. But people were rooting for her somehow.

P.S. If you have that Penthouse (I do), you are in possession of Child Pornography. Traci Lords is the underaged centerfold.

by Anonymousreply 15January 4, 2015 9:10 PM

1 of my favorites by her is "Dreamin"

by Anonymousreply 16January 5, 2015 4:57 PM

Fun trivia fact about Vanessa. When she was born, her parents sent out birth announcements on cards that read, "Here she is, Miss America."

by Anonymousreply 17January 5, 2015 5:08 PM

hmm I would have liked to hear how Vanessa sounded on "Girlfriend". She and Pebbles have similar tones but Vanessa obviously has better technique and refinement as she went to school for music and Pebbles didn't. That was a real gangster move by Pebbles though, snatching up that hit like that!

by Anonymousreply 18January 5, 2015 5:09 PM

Damn, the way that woman walks the stage at r4's link is almost enough to make me change my gay card to bisexual. She defines sexy.

by Anonymousreply 23January 5, 2015 5:36 PM

How long until someone does "Ugly Betty-The Musical"? ?

by Anonymousreply 24January 5, 2015 5:46 PM

She is one of the most stunningly gorgeous women I've ever met. Crawford, Campbell, Evangelista- plain compared to her. Shorter than I expected.

Those eyes, that smile, that speaking voice...I'm gay as a goose, but would have fucked her in a heartbeat. She's a flirt.

by Anonymousreply 25January 5, 2015 5:49 PM

r25, I met her when I was a child and she was a high school student. I was seriously awestruck and thought she was the most beautiful creature I'd ever seen in my life. It made such an impression on me that when she became Miss America, I remembered who she was instantly.

by Anonymousreply 26January 5, 2015 5:59 PM

R26-

Creature is an apt description. She's so outrageously beautiful it looks alien.

by Anonymousreply 27January 5, 2015 6:03 PM

Do you really have to ask why she stopped recording Dance-Pop?

by Anonymousreply 28January 5, 2015 6:09 PM

Vanessa will sign on for a role on the next season of American Horror Story. She will be playing a black singer in the 60s, who sings later songs including Save the Best For Last.

by Anonymousreply 29January 5, 2015 6:15 PM

She will also sing Girlfriend and No Pebbles (No Pidgeons).

by Anonymousreply 30January 5, 2015 6:21 PM

Don't forget she took over for Chita in Kiss of The Spider Woman, The Musical (which is highly underrated).

by Anonymousreply 31January 5, 2015 6:25 PM

It's always been hard to define Vanessa Williams' career.

She's been on TV, movies, stage. She's modeled and had hit songs.

While this may seem like a wonderfully diverse career, hitting so many different genres also looks like she's tried everything in hopes that something will stick.

She had superstar potential. Just not sure why she never made it to that level.

by Anonymousreply 32January 5, 2015 8:44 PM

I think the fact that her career has covered all of those facets of show business shows her versatility. She's had major successes in all of those areas.

by Anonymousreply 33January 5, 2015 8:51 PM

Vanessa Williams has never been great. As a performer, she's only ever "rather good" at best, but that's not to be discounted as an achievement, especially today. Her looks have pushed her further than her actual abilities might have gotten her.

by Anonymousreply 34January 5, 2015 9:17 PM

I'm still confused about the nude pics, though I wasn't alive when they came out.

She's from a middle class family. If you're running low on funds, would you really resort to lesbian rimming stills rather than ask for a loan to tide you over?

by Anonymousreply 35January 5, 2015 9:19 PM

You weren't alive? You're a BABY!

by Anonymousreply 36January 5, 2015 9:20 PM

Some might argue that she's good or very good at a lot of things (no small achievement) but not "great" at anything.

by Anonymousreply 40January 5, 2015 9:58 PM

I always forget her brother is an actor - and pretty damn good looking - he has he Williams eyes.

Never a star but he's worked fairly consistently.

by Anonymousreply 41January 5, 2015 10:03 PM

Anyone who got to have sex with Rick Fox is successful, in my book.

by Anonymousreply 42January 5, 2015 10:06 PM

Back a few years ago when I would judge beauty pageants (big ones in the Miss USA family), I saw something happen more than once: it would come down to two girls with two camps amongst the judges. So you would vote 5 (highest) for your girl and 1 (lowest() for the rival girl... and, alas, the other camp knew the same game, 5 for their fave, 1 for yours.

So then some girl with 3s across the board would average out higher and win -- out of nowhere.

That's how I always felt about Vanessa Williams. Maybe just a 3 in talent, height, etc. But consistent enough to have a long steady career.

by Anonymousreply 43January 5, 2015 10:12 PM

I can't imagine any record label would let her release a song titled "Girlfriend" as her debut single. She was the butt (no pun intended) of sooooo many jokes when those pictures came out, much of it homophobic. The morning DJs and late night hosts would have had a field day linking "Girlfriend" with the lesbian photo spread and no one would have taken the song seriously.

I wonder if the record label gave it to Pebbles just to avoid such a controversy.

by Anonymousreply 44January 6, 2015 12:04 AM

I'm not familiar with Girlfriend. Could they have changed it to Boyfriend easily?

by Anonymousreply 46January 6, 2015 12:15 AM

No, R45, you couldn't substitute it with "Boyfriend". The gist of the song is one woman warning her female friend about the dirty dog of a man she's involved with.

by Anonymousreply 47January 6, 2015 12:19 AM

The spoken word section of "Girlfriend" is dreadful, cringeworthy scenery-chewing. Williams dodged a bullet with that one.

by Anonymousreply 48January 6, 2015 12:21 AM

Anyone who says "Pebbles who?" clearly didn't grow up in the hood.

by Anonymousreply 49January 6, 2015 12:24 AM

R12. When Vanessa recorded her last pop/dance album when she was 28, she probably thought she could go back to it. But she's always been one of those "triple threat" girls on stage: sing, dance (sort of), act.

After a few hits, Vanessa had other opportunities; her background and training is musical theatre. She probably wanted to pursue other things in show business especially when you're as hot and in demand as she was at the time.

However, staying away from the music business for any length of time can be harmful especially when she's not a Madonna, Streisand, etc., even though Vanessa is good.

So, Vanessa recorded her last pop/dance album to do a Broadway show or TV series, but chances are, she didn't think it would be her last pop album. She's talented, but who really is successful at everything all the time? A couple of performers here and there, but not everyone.

Then she recorded "Colors of the Wind," had the lead in "Kiss of the Spider Woman" on Broadway replacing Chita Rivera (no small feat), and before you know it, age has crept up on you, and the music industry has passed you by--or you've passed it by pursuing other interests.

Maintaining fame while working at your career isn't easy. That's why you have to be talented and find satisfaction in your work (and so it also pays the bills) because fame and the opportunities it provides is often fleeting.

by Anonymousreply 50January 6, 2015 12:31 AM

Here is what Pebbles said back in 1988 after the song hit #5 on the hot 100. Bitch was ruthless like Madonna:

[quote]But her big hit, the sassy, flashy "Girlfriend," wasn't part of that original package. It was a last-minute addition. Written by the team of L.A. Reid and Babyface, it was originally scheduled to be recorded by Vanessa Williams for her debut album on PolyGram. But then Pebbles fell in love with the song.

[quote]"My album was already completed, but I desperately wanted that song on it," she said. "MCA didn't want the song because they thought I had enough songs. But I had to have that song for my album. I had a feeling about it. So I offered the songwriters a better deal for the song. One big reason they gave it to me was because my album was coming out long before Vanessa's (which is due next month). They wanted the song to be on the market as soon as possible.

[quote]"Like I said, I go after what I want. This is a tough business and you've got to be aggressive or you finish out of the money. All's fair in love and music, you know."

Vanessa briefly mentioned the incident in her autobiography too (on pages 5 and 6-scroll to read). Vanessa even recalls the interaction between her and Pebbles and of course throws in a dig at the end lol:

No, but she'll "take out" anyone he wants if he cuts her in on the frozen food business.

by Anonymousreply 54January 6, 2015 12:46 AM

Pebble was a cut-throat bitch back in the day. Lots of stories of how she fucked people over.

by Anonymousreply 55January 6, 2015 12:47 AM

She was rumoured to have been a streetwalker before she had her first kid.

by Anonymousreply 56January 6, 2015 12:50 AM

I always thought she could have gone farther if she had gotten rid of that loser husband/manager earlier. He always seemed to hold her back to me. By the time she got a divorce, I think the damage was done. Not that she has not had a great ride despite it.

by Anonymousreply 57January 6, 2015 1:02 AM

I remember she was a leading lady in a Schwarzenegger movie.

by Anonymousreply 58January 6, 2015 1:05 AM

I look a lot like her, and met Alex Rodriguez years ago at a party. He was complimenting me, and said "You look like someone, but I can't think of who it is". I said "I get told that I look like Vanessa Williams a lot" and he said that she is butt ugly in person, and has terrible skin. He said that she has bad acne scarring. Granted, he is an asshole, so his opinion doesn't mean much.

by Anonymousreply 61January 6, 2015 1:34 AM

There was a time where Vanessa, her first ex-husband and her second one, Rick Fox, all lived in the same house, with one guy living upstairs and the other one downstairs. Can you imagine the freaky-deakiness going on in that situation?

by Anonymousreply 62January 6, 2015 1:37 AM

I know a dresser who said she was one of the best looking people she'd ever met. The dresser had worked with a lot of pretty people. She was also nice.

by Anonymousreply 63January 6, 2015 1:48 AM

[quote] I heard that she was estranged from her son, Pharrell.

He's not her real son. She took him in when he crashlanded from another planet. But she had to ask him to leave when he kept going for those midnight bike rides with her son.

by Anonymousreply 64January 6, 2015 1:49 AM

R62. Which one is Pharell's father?

by Anonymousreply 65January 6, 2015 1:49 AM

She only has one son. If I remember correctly, he graduated from college recently, and she was there.

by Anonymousreply 66January 6, 2015 1:56 AM

Only one biological son, yes.

by Anonymousreply 67January 6, 2015 1:58 AM

Vanessa did have bad skin. She was a proactive spokesperson. Still, it's probably one of the reasons she kept her head and is a decent person.

by Anonymousreply 68January 6, 2015 2:00 AM

Isn't VW part white? Her great aunt was Esther Williams the swimming actress (or at least that is what I was told). Is that how she got her start in movies? Nepotism?

by Anonymousreply 69January 6, 2015 2:05 AM

No, she has two black parents. Her father's quite light, though.

by Anonymousreply 70January 6, 2015 2:28 AM

Vanessa's mother is another reason Vanessa is a decent person. She's pretty no-nonsense, one of those school teachers who has "the look" that gets kids to quiet down. (Well, in the olden days when she was teaching. Probably not today's kids.)

by Anonymousreply 71January 6, 2015 2:42 AM

Wasn't Vanessa autobio a split book with her mother? What did her mother write about rimgate?

by Anonymousreply 72January 6, 2015 2:47 AM

I worked with Vanessa Williams this past summer. She's very nice, cooperative, friendly--and still beautiful. I liked her a lot.

by Anonymousreply 73January 6, 2015 2:51 AM

Well, we shouldn't be surprised-Vanessa grew up in the middle class Millwood, NY while Pebbles grew up poor in Oakland, CA. Vanessa probably didn't have to fight as hard growing up to get what she wanted as Pebbles did. Pebbles did whatever was necessary to become rich and famous...

by Anonymousreply 74January 6, 2015 7:10 AM

She could never top her performance of "Heartquake" in "A Diva's Christmas Carol."

by Anonymousreply 75January 6, 2015 7:35 AM

Is she close to her brother Montel?

by Anonymousreply 76January 6, 2015 7:42 AM

VDub is a goddess - have known her since her days at Syracuse, and worked with her again on Ugly Betty and then Trip to Bountiful. Couldn't ask for a sweeter person, grateful for everything she's gotten (even she says she wasn't sure she'd survive the Miss America scandal). So happy she's remarried to a man who really loves her, and she's very happy with her career as it stands.

BTW, she's 55 now and so being a pop star again is not high on her list of priorities. Let me repeat that first part - she's FIFTY FIVE - and looks effing amazing, no?

My opinion of Vanessa's music...

by Anonymousreply 79January 6, 2015 10:33 AM

Once Vanessa reached her real dream - singing on Broadway in both Kiss of the Spider Woman and Into the Woods - I think she was less interested in pop success. She did have enough pull to get a second cast recording of KOOSW.

She's learned to go where the jobs are: pop music, theatre, television, movies.

My favorite film performance is in Soul Food, where she plays the responsible sister Terry, the one who people are always asking for money and then wondering why she's in their business. "In this family, ATM means Ask Terry for money."

by Anonymousreply 80January 6, 2015 11:29 AM

Also interesting to talk about Vanessa after hearing about the death of another iconic Miss America from New York, Bess Myerson. Both accidents of timing: Bess, who needed the scholarship money they were offering for the first time in 1945, became the first (and so far only) Jewish Miss America at the end of World War II when the news was really getting out about the camps. Vanessa who became the first black winner after those years when women of color were not allowed to enter. Bess's year hampered by anti-semitism and Vanessa's year with many threats from the racists.

by Anonymousreply 81January 6, 2015 11:31 AM

She's a very talented actress and a great stage performer. I saw her in the Into the Woods Revival and the Sondheim on Sondheim. My hope is she would do a recording of American standards or her favorite Sondheim songs.

by Anonymousreply 82January 6, 2015 11:49 AM

[quote]Vanessa even had a couple of hits singing movie themes such as "Color of the Wind" from "Pocahontas," but now even those songs go to singers such as Idina Menzel as it did for "Frozen."

That's not a good comparison. Idina's version of "Let It Go" was the the film version sung by the character. Demi Lovato did the radio single.

Just like Judy Kuhn did the film version of "Colors of the Wind" and Williams did the radio single.

However, Lovato's version didn't do as well and was overshadowed by Idina's version which reached #5 on Billboard Hot 100 and #9 on Adult Contemporary Chart, whereas as William's version did very well on its own and got to #4 on Billboard's 100 and #2 on the Adult Contemporary Chart.

"Colors of the Wind" won the Grammy for Best Song Written for a Film and Williams was nominated for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for the song.

by Anonymousreply 83January 6, 2015 11:52 AM

She has a pleasant, but generic sounding voice. She can sing, but she's always sounded more like someone who would be singing jingles for commercials - very formal and "perfect" sounding, lacking any real raw emotion or distinction. Almost kind of reminded me of Marylin McCoo from her Solid Gold days.

As for her pop albums, when the whole "new jack swing" thing died out abruptly and all of R&B and Rap went "hip hop/gangsta" throughout the 90's - I couldn't imagine her adopting that trend as she was entering her 30's. Did anyone really want to see her go all "hardcore" singing about weed and guns?

I'm not really surprised she went the adult-contemporary route instead. I loved her Christmas album. I wouldn't mind hearing more music from her, but if so, she should really steer clear from all the auto-tuned crap, and rap cameos.

by Anonymousreply 84January 6, 2015 11:59 AM

FUN FACT: Vanessa Williams won Miss America om 1983 thereby becoming the first black Miss America, but most people don't know that had she lost there still would have been a first "black" Miss America. First runner-up Suzette Charles has an Italian-American father and a black mother and is the same shade as Williams.

I know people will argue that she's only half, but if Halle Berry (white mother, black father) is considered the first black Best Actress winner and Obama (white mother, black father) apparently made history as our first black president, then Charles would have been, too.

by Anonymousreply 85January 6, 2015 12:00 PM

Charles was the first black runner up, and she was darker than me.

I don't like how she gives her "S" sounds that "sh" sound. The only two songs I know of her are "Save the Best for Last" and "Colors of the Wind" and she does it in both.

[quote]And nowow we're standing fashe to fashe / Isn't this world a cazy plashe?

[quote]Come run the hidden pine trails of the foresht / Come taste the sun-sweet berries of the earth / Come roll in all the riches all around you / And for onshe never wonder what they're worth

I think she's terrific!

Her performanace of "STBFLast" on SNL made me a fan though my favorite is still the song "Comfort Zone."

Her brother was very funny as "Crazee Eyez Killah" on Curb Your Enthusiasm.

R94 you may want to take your old people meds. Crazy Eyes is in ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK and is played by a woman.

by Anonymousreply 95January 6, 2015 3:54 PM

R94 "Comfort Zone" is a GREAT, sexy song.

The people who actually have the nerve to criticize her voice probably think Katy Perry & Miley Cyrus are good singers.

Calm down. The criticism of her has been relatively measured.

Never cared for Miss. Williams singing much. Only two recordings one can tolerate are "Save The Best For Last" and the one from that Disney film Colors of the Wind.

Acting wise loved VM in Ugly Betty!

by Anonymousreply 100January 6, 2015 10:57 PM

"Save the Best..." was a classic pop record, and was used to very good effect at the end of the movie of "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert".

Vanessa's ambition has always been to be a successful musical theater actress. She can sing and dance but she did not covet a career as a dance-pop recording artist. She certainly didn't want to be competing with the likes of a non-talent like Pebbles for dance-pop songs. Singing and dancing was the only way to get the world to take notice of her after that Miss America nonsense. So even though she killed it in the videos for "The Right Stuff" and "Running Back To You" that wasn't really her thing. Her best CD is 2009's "The Real Thing" which is AC, smooth jazz but she sounds best in that setting. She's doing a concert in Los Angeles later this month.

Vanessa was also stunning in the video for "Comfort Zone"

"Save the Best for Last" was a nice song, but SO overrated. "Dreamin'" was way better in terms of ballads.

"The Right Stuff" album could have been bigger than it was if they had released better singles. "He's Got the Look" and "Darlin' I" were lousy singles choices. They should have released "I'll Be The One" and "If You Really Love Him" instead.

R59, thats interesting considering ARod dated Cameron Diaz who has very bad skin and wrinkled. But of course she is white and blonde so he gave her a pass for having bad acne.

I remember Vanessa said in an interview she just could not believe that so many other top singers had been offered this song and turned it down. What an amazing lesson we can learn from this situation. Think of the three song writers for this song: Phil Galdston, Wendy Waldman and Jon Lind and what they must have endured feeling like they had created what they believed was one of the most beautiful songs in the universe, yet the big singing stars had no interest in recording it. I can only imagine how many times they looked at each other with shock, self doubt and disappointment every time their song was rejected.

In the end, the song topped the Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks, and ranked #4 in the Billboard Top 100 hits of 1992. It was also nominated for two Grammys (Song of the Year and Record of the Year). I bet those who turned it down were kicking themselves. Hard.

Doubtful. Vanessa can't escape that stupid song and people always overlook all the other songs she's done because of it. She's tried recapturing that sound/style over and over to no avail.

by Anonymousreply 111January 7, 2015 1:17 PM

R111 I meant at the time, after the song became a phenomenon, I'm sure those singers had regrets.

by Anonymousreply 112January 7, 2015 1:30 PM

"Save the Best for Last" fit Vanessa's circumstances. It was a statement of triumph after she'd had hit records, movies and appeared on Broadway. It was a saccharine "f*ck you" to the Miss America org.

It was parodied on "In Living Color" as "Kiss My Ass"

by Anonymousreply 113January 7, 2015 8:33 PM

Vanessa never had much of a singing career because her first album 'The comfort zone' stank and tanked.

In 1991 she said 'I want to be as big as Madonna but without the pressure she's under to perform.'

She couldn't get the songwriters & she didn't want to graft.

by Anonymousreply 114January 7, 2015 10:28 PM

Dreamin' really is a great track

The Comfort Zone was her second album. The Right Stuff was her first, and it did not tank.

Exactly. "The Right Stuff" went gold and had the Top 10 hit "Dreamin'".

Stop! Please stop. It's too much. Someone please post a happy story. I'd like to hear just one before I starve to death. Anything to replace that awful memory.

Or R118/Orphan, you could simply die as you've been claiming you've been going to do for years.

by Anonymousreply 119January 7, 2015 10:39 PM

Thankyou R116 My knowledge of third rate popstars is inevitably third rate.

by Anonymousreply 120January 7, 2015 10:39 PM

I love the "Eraser" theme song "Where Do We Go Drom Here". Too bad it wasn't a big hit in the US.

by Anonymousreply 121January 8, 2015 1:07 PM

She died out when she started singing "I'll be creamin'" to her gay male audiences.

by Anonymousreply 122March 7, 2016 4:50 PM

Is Vanessa still married to that white guy? She hasn’t posted a picture of him on her social media in a year and a half, yet she’s posted pictures of both of her ex-husbands since then.😳
