As an Asian myself, I honestly find Kpop a disgrace to Asians in general. It's basically us trying to act White.

I don't like OP's linked song, but I do like many kpop songs that are a bit quirky and original. Some SNSD, f(x) and 2NE1's songs are great.
I like the slightly older kpop songs better. Last year I only liked f(x)'s Red light and one super junior song, something with rain.

I find a lot of East Asian pop acts, particularly the Japanese, a little too whimsical and cartoonish. Like they're overgrown children perpetually stuck in Hello Kitty / Anime mode. The pop act at OP's link at least looks grownup and not all cutesy-coo. At the opposite end of the spectrum are the P-pop (Pinoy/Pilipino pop) acts like SexBomb Girls, Viva Hot Babes, Kitty Girls, and Mocha Girls who try too hard to be slutty.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | January 3, 2015 4:14 AM |

I forgot how I found about this artist, CL from 2ne1, but I love this video. She has energy, swagger and a great stage presence. I appreciate that some of the lyrics are in English, so I have an idea what she's singing about. I find Asian rap/hip hop fascinating - two cultures meshing into great sound and visual.
Those male dancers behind her are hot.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | February 10, 2015 10:43 PM |
R19 CL is set to make her American debut soon. Scooter Braun, who manages Beiber, is working with her.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | February 12, 2015 12:55 PM |
I LOVE f(x), R11. Whoever writes for them is genius, because very song they get to perform is punchy, solid, ass-kicking platinum pop. Their choreo is far more interesting than the 'guy' bands, their lyrics are hilariously batshit insane and creepy, and they have a RAPPER. They change concepts all the time and always keep it fresh. I wonder how much creative freedom or input the ladies themselves get?
And ofc, as with any gorgeous women, much debate rages over which is the gay one. Consensus says American-born tomboy Amber, but I think that's too obvious (I think she's more bi or mixgender). If any, I think it's Victoria (at 0.32 in the clip, leggy Chinese model with bangs/the only one that can dance), on account of all those rumours about her shacking up with Zhang Zihi on that movie they did.
Or it's Luna (at 0.36, short, bad blonde dyejob, 'look-at-me' voice and attire). I get a big ol' Lez vibe from her, no str8 girl dances like that.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | June 26, 2015 6:15 PM |
I don't know. I still get gay vibes from Amber. In SHINee i'm sure it's Key but i have a feeling Minho is SM's buttboy. He flirts with all his male elders. In VIXX it's obviously N.
Glad we have fellow KPOP fans here!

I find some K-pop and J-pop songs really good. But most mv don't make sense at all, it's like parodies.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | June 26, 2015 10:39 PM |
K-Pop (and J-Pop) are absolutely dog vomit quality of song writing. Nobody will ever remember it.
The Dollarama quality mentality has hit global Pop music, like never before in history.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | June 26, 2015 10:39 PM |
Amber says she likes men, but I don't know about that. I'm not sure if the tomboy thing is her shtick, or if she's really a lesbian. Like R21 said, too obvious.
Some former assistant that worked for SM said that Key is the gay one. Does Taemin ping to anyone else but me?
Is everyone in Big Bang straight? GDragon was in a blind item recently. He has a bad drug problem. Could he be a closet case? I don't believe that all the girls love him garbage.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | June 26, 2015 10:41 PM |
I hate Kpop and Koreans in general. Yeah, some individuals are ok but most of those people are shady, evil liars. Their breaths reek of kimchi. They're the ugliest of Asians, which is why so many of them get plastic surgery. Their inferiority complex makes their personalities intolerable. They have no eyelids at all and the smallest dicks of any race. Just a bunch of ugly slit-eyed, pie-faced gooks.
I'm fine with all other Asians but Koreans should just disappear from this world. I hope Kim jong-un goes completely crazy and destroys that peninsula and all those ugly gooks.

Goodbye forever, R26. I love the ignore button.
I haven't heard much K-pop, but what I have heard sounds very generic. The same frothy synth sound again and again.
I recently read an article about what it's like to be a K-pop star. You're basically owned by the record label, constantly going on junkets, performing. Reminded me of the boy band system here. I wish I could find it again.

R25 I thought everyone in BigBang was straight too, until someone randomly posted on datalounge a few years ago that he slept with T.O.P.
A few days later the OP retracted and said he just made it up. The whole scenario was odd because it was KPOP (which was not popular in the west at the time) and datalounge.
I never looked at him the same way again.

This is a massive thread on lesbian rumours in k-pop, some interesting tea in amongst the fangirling over basically sisterhood/friendship. Krystal of f(x) comes up a LOT, almost as much as Moonbyul of MAMAMOO. Some even think Moon has a huge lingering crush on Krys.

Thanks for the link, R37. There is a list of both female and male idols. Fangurls there are really going at it, lol.
Slightly other topic. K pop songs might be basic, but nothing is basic when it comes to putting on a show. These guys kill it when it comes to dancing.

The strangest thing is all of the guys acting all thug. It's laughable at times. Such cartoon of themselves.
Plus, why do all the groups have to have so many member in them? Some have 6 to 10 people. That's odd.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | July 8, 2015 5:03 PM |
It's kind of like all the rappers we have here, R39.
Bigger groups mean more eye candy. Which means more fans clawing their way into concerts. Bad thing is you run the risk of having a fan favorite quit on you. Exo had 3 members quit, because they got tired of being treated like shit.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | July 8, 2015 5:19 PM |
The great thing is that they churn out groups so fast, that you forget when a group disbands or lose a member. I was a huge TVXQ fan with all 5 members. When they split in half they were never the same for me. Ironically the Duo TVXQ are HUGE in Korea and Japan.
VIXX has replace them for me.

Btw their new album is great, they have a new dynamic. I would describe it as EDM/future-house, 60's vocals meets 80's production...sexy! Best cuts are '4 Walls' (single), 'Diamond', 'Rude Love', 'Cash Me Out' and the amazing 'X', which surprised me with it's maturity and playfulness.

Kpop sum up as a cheap imitation of American hip-hop and r&b music. Most of those Koreans don't like blacks but they don't mind copying their style of music and dance. Most of you should watch those kpop videos there is a member rapping. It is all shameless ripoff of black music.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | April 2, 2017 10:11 PM |
A lot of KPOP is so derivative of American music but always 2 to 3 years behind in trends. For instance, now they're really into "tropical house." which we're already sick of over here. In almost every KPOP song, you know exactly the song they're referencing.
Hyuna's "RED" was pretty original, so I loved it. But then "Roll Deep" was a rip-off of that whole DJ Mustard sound.
Like most "creative" or "innovative" things coming out Asia, 99% are cheap copies of stuff Westerners already came up with. The one percent is good.

Lived in Korea. A lot of tourists were there because of Kpop. They were there expecting to meet a metrosexual stylish Korean guy, instead found dead-eyed salary men children of 30 still under their parents thumb... My problem with kpop like most pop it is simply a soulless money making machine. There is no heart or creativity to it at all. As for gay Kpop stars -- lol! Haven't you heard that there are no gay Koreans!? That's a foreign affliction. Koreans are super homophobic, racist, and frankly lack individual imagination. It is simply beaten out of them. You are watching a product and they are worked to the bone.

There's no way missA's 'Hush' isn't about oral-anal. Part of the video even takes place in grimy shower stalls.

No, it's Asians trying to act black or rather "black as demonstrated by music videos and hiphop 'culture'" as mentioned upthread. Note the clothing. 99% of the guys try and dress all thuggish but are betrayed by their delicate elfin features and natural femininity.
And Koreans are way too affected by Christianity; watching them is like watching a muslim movie. Never intense enough because of that stupid internal censor that all religious types have.

Kpop doesn't click in The US/UK because we expect our artists to be authentic and unique. We only allow a certain amount of manufactured pop to exist and even then the pop stars are still expected to stand out and not be derivative. Of course many aren't artists but they still put on the image of being creative. That's why lip syncing and ghostwriting is controversial. There just doesn't seem to be a sigma in Asia towards being a pop puppet for corporations and copying the same formula over and over

I find that most of it is just an iteration of what I've already lived through 15-20 years ago. Of course, its primary consumers are kids who were too young for MTV TRL and such. Stylistically, I find a lot of Kpop like an IKEA table: it's a competent, efficient, disposable product, nicely manufactured and packaged but it's almost always a slight variation of the same table.

K-Pop and K-Pop fans get a total pass because of one thing that they did: derail Trump's big initial campaign rally. If the rally, held during the height of the pandemic had been successful, it would have been a triumph. But, the kids reserved all of these tickets and never showed up, humiliating Trump and his staff, resulting in firings and ridicule from the media. It was a great moment. " We're going to have a million at the rally." Inside : a cavern of empty seats, thanks to K-pop fans. From CNN:
"They've helped South Korean stars dominate charts and break records on social media.
Now, some K-pop fans are claiming another victory: helping foil United States President Donald Trump's return to the campaign trail.
Ahead of his Saturday night rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Trump bragged that he had about 1 million RSVPs. But when the arena didn't even reach its 19,000-person capacity, many people online were quick to give K-pop fans and TikTok users at least partial credit for the low turnout. Prior to the rally, people on social media platforms TikTok and Twitter encouraged people to register to attend Trump's event -- and not attend. One video, with more than 300,000 views, called on fans of South Korean mega group BTS in particular to join the trolling campaign.
Following the rally, Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted at Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale, telling him he had been "rocked" by teens on TikTok flooding the Trump campaign with fake ticket reservations. "Kpop allies, we see and appreciate your contributions in the fight for justice too," she added.
