Laurence Fox as DI Hathaway

I find him brutish and neanderthalic looking. But anybody who is on television is considered gorgeous, particularly the Neanderthals.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | October 6, 2014 3:36 PM |
That's why I like him, r1. He played an aggressive bully on this Mystery episode, Jericho: a The Killing of Johnny Swan, and I rewound one of his scenes a number of times, if you know what I mean.

Here he is naked, with Tom Hardy in the background. No wonder Tom looks so ashamed (who wouldn't, next to a schwanz like that).

When has he shown his big one? And I like him on the show.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | October 6, 2014 8:14 PM |
I was wondering how Inspector Lewis would be brought back into the series since he retired. Have you noticed he is always smoking. I wonder where he hides that impressive equipment as he never shows anything.

Well, he hasn't done so in recent years because he's been on Inspector Lewis, obviously!
R4's screencap is from 'Colditz' that Fox was in with Tom Hardy about a decade ago. It also starred Damian Lewis and Jason Priestley.

On some Inspector Lewis forums posters are saying that Hathaway is straight and not bi even though a couple of episodes seem to indicate that he is bi.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | October 13, 2014 8:10 PM |
R26
When I said this...
"I wish that on Inspector Lewis they had left his sexuality ambiguous."
...it was because for many seasons (I think all six) Hathaway was not involved with any women, never hit on women, but even more so, never alluded to any private life at all. It was conspicuous by its absence.
That coupled with the fact that, although my gaydar wasn't absolutely sure, it was definitely alert. There was just something about the character that said probably gay, even though there had never been anything explicit.
So a lot of people, including me, were hoping Hathaway was gay. And then I heard that he goes on a date with a woman in the latest season. So it is no longer (or so I thought) ambiguous.
I had never heard that Fox used the term "Hathagay", so who knows? There may still be a possibility.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | October 13, 2014 8:13 PM |
Hathagay seemed to be pining after a female character at the end of the most recent episode (The Lions of Nemea, Season 7, ep. 2). It was pretty ambiguous, though. He just seemed quiet and pensive.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | October 13, 2014 8:28 PM |
There was an episode of Lewis a season or two ago that actually seemed to be pushing Hathaway out of the closet as a gay man.
Can't quite remember the details but it involved some long lost gay friend who was either the whodunnit's victim or killer.
But at the end of the episode, IIRC, Hathaway firmly came out.....as a straight man.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | October 13, 2014 8:52 PM |
R48 thanks for clearing that up, R30's misinformation confused me
R51 Isn't Hathaway's back story that he quit the seminary? I always figured he was just celibate. I agree with R52 that it did seem like he was pining for that women in ep 2
We're actually ahead of the UK this year, as S7 episode 2 aired here last night.
Yes, there are 3 Lewis stories this year. In the UK each one of the 3 stories is being divided into 2 parts each, for a total of 6 episodes.
But in North America, the PBS stations in the US/Canada are airing the 3 Lewis episodes in one block each, rather than dividing them into 2 sections per story.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | October 14, 2014 4:49 AM |
There was an episode of Lewis a season or two ago that actually seemed to be pushing Hathaway out of the closet as a gay man.
Yes, a couple of years ago there was an episode that revolved around the whole issue of Hathaway's private life & orientation. During the episode Lewis even asks Hathaway if he is gay since he never hears anything about his private life.
There was an ambiguous scene in that episode where Hathaway is drunk & is getting seduced by a woman who is really a man and so it's kind of unclear as to whether Hathaway is attracted to him/her because he thinks the character is a woman, or whether he senses he is a man underneath.
At the end of the episode though there was scene where Hathaway basically tells Lewis he is straight.
Thing is though, I don't see how going on one date with a woman in all these years indicates he is straight. 99% of the time we still don't see Hathaway with a private life. This is in stark contrast to Lewis who had a wife & children in the original Inspector Morse, and who now lives with the woman who is Coroner, Dr. Hobson.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | October 14, 2014 4:57 AM |
Lewis always seems snarky when he's trying to pry information out of Hathaway, who seems to take delight into not giving up any information.
Speaking of which, what was with that whole thing of walking to a cathedral in Spain and then stopping before he got there?
by Anonymous | reply 58 | October 14, 2014 3:33 PM |
I'm not surprised that Kevin Whately (Lewis) thought of taking a break from this series because he's been playing the role of Lewis for over 25 years now from the start of the original Inspector Morse series with John Thaw in the mid-1980's to the present-day Inspector Lewis.
Apparently Laurence Fox & Billie Piper were going to explore some pilot season opportunities in LA last year during the break from Lewis, but then Piper ended up doing Penny Dreadful with Josh Hartnett and Fox ended up coming back to Lewis.

R62, but that was only added recently. The point is that Hathaway has basically lived as a monk all these years up until now.
R63, I think Fox is just being modest and saying he's surprised at how popular the show is.
R64, Laurence got naked several times in his earlier career, but I don't think we'll see him naked in the near future.
I'd order 'Colditz' with him & Tom Hardy so you can see their naked shower scene in the German prison, and also order the horror movie, 'The Hole' where you'll see Laurence's cock. The movie also stars Desmond Harrington, Thora Birch & Keira Knightley.
You could also check out 'South From Granada' where Laurence does a bit of nudity on the beach with Matthew Goode. Goode is the main character in the film and has lots of nude scenes. It deals with some of the characters of the Bloomsbury writer's group, such as Lytton Strachey & Dora Carrington.

IIRC Laurence Fox took a break to return to his home (the United States) and try his luck in Hollywood, thus joining the many other "Brits" landing on these shores. Things must not have gone as planned if he is back in the UK and signaling interest in remaining with the series in some way or another.
The Inspector Morse series was and still is *huge* both in UK and worldwide. Many were saddened by the author of the book series to kill off Morse and write nothing further. To keep the franchise going we got two new series; DI Lewis and Endeavour. The latter may not go on very much longer either.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | October 18, 2014 10:24 PM |
Colin Dexter killed off Morse because he thought he (Dexter) was dying. I've watched a couple of episodes of Endeavour and couldn't get into it. I've always like Lewis better.
As for the trip to the states, it sounds like neither him or his wife got any parts, so they went back to the UK because they had offers there.

@R76
Find Endeavour interesting for we see how Morse became the sort of person and LE he was later. It is good to see how Endeavour's mind works for it tells how Morse never let things go even when others thought a crime was solved.
From Endeavour we also see why Morse never rose higher than he did and the probable source of his problems with the ladies.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | October 18, 2014 11:25 PM |
I love Endeavour. ITA that it informs on how Morse ended up like he did.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | October 19, 2014 12:00 AM |
Yes, we also get to see how others such as Chief Superintendent Strange (strange by nature and strange by name as Morse would say), rose up through the ranks.
Strange is a lowly constable IIRC in Endeavour but it is clear he is keen to get on and knows how to play the game. Endeavour OTOH is either thick or simply enjoys ticking his superiors off, thus "Strange" ends up the boss of Morse.
With Endeavour we begin to clearly see why Morse ended up alone, somewhat lonely but with a passion for opera.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | October 19, 2014 12:07 AM |
I like Endeavor and would totally give it up for Thursday.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | October 19, 2014 12:19 AM |
Chief Superintendent Innocent is a manipulative, thankless bitch and an unashamed social climber. On the final episode of Lewis, I want them to stab her with a letter opener, then piss on her lifeless body.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | October 19, 2014 3:20 PM |
I thought that the reason Colin Dexter stopped writing the Morse novels was because John Thaw, the marvelous actor who played him, died?
There are only about a dozen of those novels but they're incredibly written. I'd say only some of the early Morse TV episodes come close to their complexity and quirkiness.
In any case, I think Endeavour maintains their spirit far better than Lewis has.

I think the new episodes of Inspector Lewis have been pretty poor -- the series started off well but this season has been poorly scripted.
Very few of these shows can last this long. Midsomer Murders had a few good seasons and then thousands of bad ones... it seems... Only Foyle's War and Inspector Lynley really kept the quality intact for their entire run.
Another good series, although quite old now, is the Inspector Alleyn programs.

by Anonymous | reply 89 | October 19, 2014 9:03 PM |
One can only assume it was buckets of money that brought "Lewis" back. He didn't seem into it the first go around and less so this time at the rodeo. But then again the man has been playing that character for a very long time now when you add in the Morse years.
Failing to find anything in Hollywood/America Laurence Fox will probably remain either until or if we see yet another spin off, or he is offered steady work elsewhere.
Whole thing boils down to Morse being still immensely popular and potentially lucrative for BBC (or is it ITV?) but Dexter owns the rights so that is that. So we get these Morse series without Morse, but everyone knows it really is about the man.
by Anonymous | reply 90 | October 19, 2014 9:12 PM |
The Remorseful Day came out in 1999. The TV Morse died in 2000. John Thaw died in 2002.

What the hell does that matter, R92? The book was released in 1999, so it's safe to say that the episode was made between then and when it aired aired November 15,2000, and it's safe to say that Thaw died on February 21,2002.
It's also safe to say that you're wrong and you're just digging yourself into a bigger nitpicking hole of stupidity because you can't figure out how to type a search into Google.

Why did the BBC (or was it ITV?) decide to stop doing the Inspector Lynley mysteries? Elizabeth George is still writing novels so there were more stories for them to adapt, and it sounded like Nathaniel Parker and Sharon Small were open to continuing their roles if they had been able to.
by Anonymous | reply 94 | October 19, 2014 10:50 PM |
Sounds like it was too expensive to make, R94
by Anonymous | reply 95 | October 19, 2014 11:03 PM |
I don't get how Lynley was considered 'expensive'. It was a mystery show. It didn't have special effects or huge sets or foreign location shoots.
But that may just be BBC spin. They used to claim the original Doctor Who series was too 'expensive' to make too, whereas in reality it had a small budget and should have had 3 times the amount of money it was given.
It was only when the new Doctor Who series was re-launched in 2005 that they finally realized it had to have a big budget to compete in the modern age and finally relented on their penny-pinching.
by Anonymous | reply 96 | October 19, 2014 11:14 PM |
Apparently, it was because it took 3 times longer to film than other shows and the BBC was cost-cutting.
by Anonymous | reply 97 | October 19, 2014 11:18 PM |
Nathaniel Parker guest-starred as a semi-regular on 'Merlin' a couple years ago. I think he played the brother of Uther Pendragon (Anthony Head) and the uncle of Arthur (Bradley James).
by Anonymous | reply 98 | October 19, 2014 11:26 PM |
I mentioned before, I've read all the Lynley books, so I'm pretty familiar with the characters. Havers was cast perfectly, but Parker just didn't do it for me as Lynley. I like him in other things, but his Lynley just didn't do it for me.

Sharon Small was NOTHING like the Barbara Havers as described by Elizabeth George, at least in the first several Lynley books (I stopped reading them after awhile).

Havers in the books was always described as pig-eyed, unkempt and ungainly.

by Anonymous | reply 104 | October 20, 2014 3:23 AM |
I could never even watch the Lynley Mysteries because both actors were so far off from the character descriptions in the books.
Lynley is blond & very aristocratic looking. Havers is short, dumpy , chops at her own hair when it needs a cut and dresses from the hamper - rumpled and mismatched sometimes.
The actor was brunette and had piggish features and the actress was this petite little thing. The attempt to make her like the book character was a wrinkled raincoat.
Having read all the books I found their appearances distracting.

I recently learned how reading the books before that start of a TV show and vice versa can affect how we see the TV show in relation to the books.
I loved the American program "Longmire" (fucking A&E has cancelled the show!). I hadn't read the books before the show started.
I start reading the books... the creators of the program took big liberties with the characters Craig Johnson created on the page, but the overall tone of the novels, the essential characters were preserved in the TV show.
I loved Bailey Chase as Branch Connolly on TV... the character doesn't exist in the books. Lou Diamond Phillips is (who would have thought) great as Henry Standing Bear, but physically, he is nothing like the book's character. And on and on.
However, it didn't matter. The tone of the books is there in each episode.
Isn't that the same with Inspector Lynley? The core of the characters, their relationships, how they solve crime, translated well from page to screen.

(R114) we're psychic Longmire friends. Came to the books after seeing the show and am saving up some to read during my Thanksgiving week flights. I like Lou D. P. as Henry but wonder how Rodney A. Grant might have been in the part as he is closer to the physical description of the character in the books. Bailey Chase is hot. Can't recall ever seeing Robert Taylor (hot dad) in any thing else which really helps his believability as Longmire, can't think of any other current actor right for the part. Craig Johnson gave a talk at a library in my area (Denver) in August which I missed but the librarian reports that there are efforts under way to bring the series back.

R9, I dunno about Billie being a beard, but she certainly comes across as a bit strange.
Not to mention she was married to the DJ Chris Evans (as opposed to the same named actor) when she was 19 and he was much older.

Her twat must emit some kind of hypnotic essence that traps men because her face sure couldn't do it.
Henceforth she shall be known as Penis Flytrap.

R115, thanks for the post. I think the show "Longmire" would work well on FX or (possibly) TNT.
Bailey Chase is incredibly hot - too few scenes of him without a shirt. What a cliffhanger of a season ending... out skeet shooting with his father (the great Gerald McRainey).
Vic is another character that's dark-haired and very Italian in the books, but on the show she's blond and bigger physically. Plus Katie Sackhoff doesn't get to curse a blue streak like the in the books, but man, she embodies the character.
by Anonymous | reply 118 | October 23, 2014 7:39 PM |
R117 Lol at "penis flytrap". She was kind of cute when she was younger, but she looks a mess now.
Didn't she also come out as bisexual at one point after she split up with Evans? She seems to be back in the closet now though.
by Anonymous | reply 119 | October 23, 2014 8:14 PM |
She's got RTF (Resting Tard Face). I've only ever seen a handful of Doctor Who episodes, but the ones I saw with her in it, she always has a dopey look on her face, sort of like how Downs Syndrome people look when they're at McDonalds and they're asked if they want to supersize their meal.

Anyone know which episode(s) is it inferred that Hathaway is gay?
by Anonymous | reply 121 | October 28, 2014 7:42 PM |
Is actress Amelia Fox Laurence's sister or his cousin? IIRC, she's married to one of Richard Harris' sons.
She was in "Silent Witness" on BBC America, I really enjoyed that show. I think they only aired two seasons, promised it would be back but it was never shown again.
BBC America used to be great, now it's endless repeats of that horrible car show and one of the Star Trek series seems to be on an endless loop!

She was also the Second Mrs DeWynter when I starred in REBECCA.

And what about his family? Are they all mental or something?

R126 I'm not really sure, she just seems a bit odd in interviews I've seen with her.

Nathaniel Parker's cock is nowhere near as big as Laurence Fox's.

Here's Nathaniel Parker naked in "Wide Sargasso Sea":
by Anonymous | reply 130 | November 4, 2014 3:57 PM |
As I said up thread, the last time DL looked at naked Nathaniel, they couldn't decide if he were cut or not.
I was quite puzzled.
by Anonymous | reply 133 | November 4, 2014 4:02 PM |
Well what's your vote on the cut/uncut question, R133?
He looks cut to me. But I'm not positive.
by Anonymous | reply 134 | November 4, 2014 4:05 PM |
Perhaps he's a grower, not a shower.
I'd take Fox Cock over that any day though.
by Anonymous | reply 135 | November 4, 2014 4:07 PM |
r133 here -- I'm a gal, so I'll leave it to you guys to decide.
Or, at least HOPE that gay guys in the 21st Century can tell what is going on with a penis.
by Anonymous | reply 136 | November 4, 2014 4:08 PM |
R135, although Parker has a smaller cock, he was no slouch in the looks department in 'Wide Sargasso Sea'. That film was made about 20 years ago in the early 1990's, so Parker was at the peak of his beauty then.
Very fit ass & body on display.

Yes, R137 but why settle for the pinkie when you can have the middle finger?

A new "FOX HUNT":
Maybe Laurence Fox and Chuck Todd can go hunting for a chin.

But then again, he never mentions her on Twitter any more, so there ya go.

If you listen to his songs, doesn't sound like much of a happy marriage
[italic] Gunfight
Don’t fall in love if you don’t want a gunfight If you’re not prepared to fall I’m sorry dear I’m looking for a ray of sun in here In the end there’s another sunrise
Oh I know that we’re at war But honey please before I sleep
I wanna wine you, dine you, not deny you Hold you higher, always higher I’m sorry for my words
(our wars, our wars, our wars)
Our wars are fueled by a lifestyle, baby It’s time to change it, to turn And walk away My vice’s perfectly primed My hands have been so perfectly tied
Oh I know that we’re at war But honey please before I sleep
I wanna wine you, dine you, not deny you Hold you higher, always higher I’m sorry for my words
Only love, only love, only love can save Only hope, only hope cries this fear away I wanna live, I wanna live, I don’t want to die No
I wanna wine you, dine you, not deny you Hold you higher, always higher I’m sorry for my words
I wanna wine you, dine you, not deny you Hold you higher, so much higher [/italic]

One thing I've noticed on Lewis - everyone locks their cars but not their bikes. So there's roving bands of car thieves at Oxford, but the bike thieves stay away?
by Anonymous | reply 147 | November 11, 2014 2:19 AM |
The only thing I notice on Lewis is Hathaway's gorgeous ass

by Anonymous | reply 155 | November 13, 2014 10:38 PM |
Yes, far more impressive. To the best of my knowledge, there's never been a good view of his cock on Lewis, so I'll settle for second best.
You'd think with a cock like that, his cunt of a wife would treat him a little better.
by Anonymous | reply 156 | November 13, 2014 10:44 PM |
omg i love him so much anyone have some good tea on him? he's married to Billie Piper, so someone has to know something!

Interesting interpretation of the character. In this series, an intellectual former seminarian, yet still a believer and fiercely poetic. Son of Losey's aristocrat James who reprised another gay aristocrat in Sexy Beast, and cousin of Losey 's other aristocrat Edward Fox. Of couse, his grandfather was Losey's agent Robin Fox. Sister is actress Emelia Fox, also a crime investigator on British TV currently.
