Madonna's "Lucky Star"
With "Like a Virgin" finished and waiting to be unleashed, Madonna released "Lucky Star." After "Borderline" became her first top ten hit, "Lucky Star" became her first top 5 hit peaking at number four starting her record setting 16 top 5 hits in a row...
And revealed the Madonna that started the whole mania in motion.

OP, Thank you!
This has brought back so many memories of my college days, when I worked my way through school at an internationally recognized 'record' store. (Yes, that one.)
I had the opportunity of meeting her (briefly) during her first US tour: young Lady with an Attitude and still sporting her baby fat. Beautiful face, lots of make-up though.

It's was like a meet-and-greet. Very friendly, but you could tell there was a definite attitude there: she already knew how she was going to work her magic for with what was coming her way.

R11, interesting post. I've always wondered just to what extent Madonna "planned" her career. She seemed very brazen in her early years but I've always thought that was due youthful/naive arrogance. I figured she really took her career as it came. But now I wonder if she truly knew exactly how she was going to change music. I don't see how given how fickle the music industry/musical trends/pop stardom is. But ya never know...

She was quite attractive and sexy in her prime and it went a long way to making her a star. Even non-fans should be able to admit that. Especially since we think it's one of the reasons she become overly successful given her talent level. Although some, like Janet, have even less of a voice. I'd add Kylie to that too.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | August 29, 2014 10:27 PM

I think she planned the general outline.

I dont get all this, she wasnt pretty or that attractive back in the say....she was and her bone structure was flawless.
For me around the Dick Tracy era was her prime.

She went after Jellybean Benitiz for one purpose: to become his lover so he'd produce her (her debut album). He was a very hot DJ/producer at the time.
Then once JB served his purpose (her debut album), she dumped him and moved on to work with Nile Rodgers. The rest is history.
She eventually worked with Massive Attack later in her career.
The lady knows how to pick her producers.

I think her prime was around Papa Don't Preach.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | August 29, 2014 10:45 PM

She didn't have flawless bone structure - her face was rather square, but she knew how to work angles.
As much as one criticise her (and how one can...), I defer to Nile Rodgers' assessment that she had the best pop instincts of anyone with whom he's worked.

I think she was cute, nothing extraordinary but there was that something extra that came across on camera when she performed. Funny how it totally did not carry over to the movie screen, except for Desperately Seeking Susan, where she was essentially playing herself and she was white hot.

Lucky Star is almost mid-tempo by today's standards. It's a great song, but if you dance to it, it is a little slow. Curious what the today's youngsters think of her in her youth?

And while Madonna gets a lot of shit, I think most of it is uncalled for. Is she the best singer in the world? No, but it's pop and she doesn't have to. And in her early years, meaning her first 10 years, she didn't have a song that wasn't a hit or didn't become a "classic."
The way the music industry is today, you won't ever see that again.
Borderline is one of my favorites and I think it's highly underrated.

I'd like to know the story behind "Burning Up". There's the original vinyl LP version, the video/CD version and the 12" version. I'm not sure what combination of Reggie Lucas and Jellybean is responsible for each version.

[quote] Is she the best singer in the world? No, but it's pop and she doesn't have to.
She deserves all the criticism she gets for her live vocals. If she put the work into her voice that she does into her body, she could sing her mostly not especially rangey songs well live. Instead she appears to blow out her vocal cords early into her tours.
Of course, someone's going to say "at least she sings live!" as if that makes up for her not bothering he ass to learn some proper technique.

And yet R44, it does count for something.
She could go out there and lip sync the way Cher and countless others do, but at least she puts in the effort.
Besides, if she did lip sync then everyone would get on her case and say, "She should sing live even if she sucks."
Some people are just always looking for something to bitch about.

Yes, but she also has pre-recorded vocals for the dance heavy parts of songs.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | August 31, 2014 1:12 AM

During her last tour, several of the songs were lipsynced. For example, when she performed that shitty "Girl Gone Wild", throughout the song she would have the microphone down at her hips while she was dancing and the vocals were still going! I thought what an idiot - at least wear a headset mic and pretend like you're singing to not make it look so obvious.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | August 31, 2014 1:16 AM

Ive seen Madonna live multiple times and there was never a pre-recorded track, even during the dance heavy parts of her songs. You could tell she was singing. She probably should have used a track.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | August 31, 2014 1:17 AM

r47 you are right. She should learn how to sing properly in concerts but she is the rare pop artist that actually sings live. She doesn't get enough credit for her live shows.
The only thing I dislike about her current singing voice, is that it lost all the rawness it once had. Borderline and Lucky Star are great examples of her "soulful" voice.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | August 31, 2014 1:19 AM

What I think is odd and perhaps stupid is that Madonna does a full run-through of her show each night before the actual show (which is why she always goes on so late). It's not as if her show varies night to night so I don't see what the point is in that.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | August 31, 2014 1:25 AM

Where during Girl Gone Wild does she put her mic down while her voice is still playing?
Pretty sure it didn't happen once let alone, "multiple times."

It's funny that she actually got some vocal training for Evita and completely lost whatever character her voice had. It was never great but it was a nice tinny pop voice that was suitable for the material. It's kind of like the whole process of singing properly confused her sound.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | August 31, 2014 2:07 AM

I'm sort of with R63. The part where she waves her arms around, it doesn't sound like she's the one singing the "hey hey hey," probably a backup singer. Her voice seems to come back in at the "Like a girl gone wild" part.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | August 31, 2014 2:15 AM

The whore not only can't sing, she apparently can't talk. I've never seen her do anything but lipsynch to the spoken rap in Vogue. And no, there is no excuse. I'm a fan of the bitch, but her live shows are a joke. There's very little "live" there.

R67 has obviously never attended a live Madonna concert. She is ALL lungs and sometimes she coughs or swears into the microphone if something is wrong.

R74, I've seen every tour in person except for The Virgin Tour and the Girlie Show. She's all smoke and mirrors, lipsynching to to a pre-recorded "live" vocal track which she will occasionally sing on top of (and, usually, badly). Yes, her mic is on but she's not singing into it. Yes, its a good show but don't be a fool. She's nit "all lungs"; she's no powerhouse vocalist and if she's your definition of one, you have very low standards.
