Denim in Real Danger of Going Out of Fashion

Even Levi Strauss & Co, a name synonymous with jeans, is struggling, with second-quarter revenue dropping 2 percent from last year and net profit falling a whopping 76 percent because of falling sales in the U.S. It also cut 800 jobs -- 20 percent of its non-retail and non-factory positions--as part of a plan to save up to $200 million a year.

A growing trend in casual wear is all about comfort, and denim is struggling to find its place. Retail and fashion experts alike are not afraid to admit the new look, coined "athleisure," is all the rage from teens turning to leggings instead of jeans and moms sporting their yoga-wear everywhere and all day long.

I thought the pre-washed light denim pocketed workshirt would never go out of style. I used to buy them at the Gap. Then one day, they were only in dark denim and were a fitted style. As a devoted gardener, I was crushed.

I can't wear levi's in the summer. It's too hot for all that weight. Living in southern CA I find a good pair of shorts can handle just about every day of the year. I still have levi's in the closet, but I haven't worn them in a few years. I tend to take them when I travel, but even then I don't have much need for that much coverage. I have cool poplin pants for events where shorts might offend, they're cut like levi's but a fraction of the weight. Even my sport coats are light weight. I still use them once in a while. I think light weight sports jackets are a good idea for old farts like me.

I think all the muffin tops squirting out of denim in recent years have put people off.

It would help if they brought back higher rises in lighter, stretchier denim.

by Anonymousreply 17August 12, 2014 7:27 AM

Even jeans are now too much trouble for today's casual society.

Have you noticed the get-ups people leave the house wearing?

by Anonymousreply 18August 12, 2014 7:39 AM

I prefer to wear khakis in many colors.

Regular denim feels uncomfortable.

It's about time that Levi's was retired.

by Anonymousreply 19August 12, 2014 7:50 AM

R1, my dad wore those every day.

by Anonymousreply 20August 12, 2014 10:06 AM

I'm actually amazed denim hasn't gone out of fashion yet to be honest. I don't even see that much of a decline either. Most people are still wearing it from what I see.

by Anonymousreply 21August 12, 2014 11:23 AM

RE 1

Your Welcome :)

Jeans will still be bought and worn by working industry. Construction workes, famers, ranchers etc are not going to be wearing yoga pants or leggings. The demise of levi and other brands is they sell clothing for bodies that some of us can never be and they are of shitty quality.

I have moved away from mainstream labels to find smaller domestic companies that still make quality clothing in the USA.

by Anonymousreply 22August 12, 2014 11:58 AM

I haven't bought a pair of denim, jeans, whatever, in over 10 years (no, not because I'm fat). I just decided to have a jean-less wardrobe. The reason I decided to do so was because denim was so effing omnipresent and has become omnipresent that anyone who wears it basically akin to clones wearing the same thing: people don't think about it they just buy it. It's functional.

Even if they say sells are declining I see people wearing denim ALL the time. I saw a butch lesbian with a pair of washed out mom-jeans, with Doc Martins, the other day. She thought she looked hot. Most people don't have any taste which is why denim caught on. Let's face it most of it is point blank ugly.

by Anonymousreply 23August 12, 2014 1:52 PM

This thread is hilarious. People still buy jeans - they just aren't buying them from Levi's.

All the fashion magazines are featuring denim shirts, jeans, and jackets

by Anonymousreply 24August 12, 2014 2:51 PM

Didn't we have a thread about the new trend to not wash designer jeans but a couple of times a year to preserve them? the article about it was ludicrous.

Like R24 said, the Levi brand has lost its luster. They're the sort of jeans you go to Sears or Penney's to buy.

I went to a concert a couple of weeks ago with my brother and some of his friends - all straight guys in their 30s - 40s. Each was wearing some version of khakis/cargo shorts, untucked polo shirt and sneakers.

I showed up wearing jeans, a button down shirt, shoes and a belt. My brother says "wow, you're all dressed up!"

by Anonymousreply 31August 12, 2014 6:03 PM

by Anonymousreply 41August 13, 2014 5:18 PM

Skinny jeans for women have become so tight that they're binding and uncomfortable, leggings look very similar but feel much better to wear.

So the fashion industry had better get off its ass and provide a comfortable, good-looking form of pants for women, before all today's girls wear leggings into middle age and today's fraus wear them into old age! Do you wanna see that? Of course you don't!

You're a disgusting slob. So sick of seeing women (3/4 of whom are so fat you know they never see the inside of a gym) wearing fucking yoga pants everywhere from shops to restaurants to even the office. Those things are for the gym/yoga studio only; you should not be sporting them in other public places. I do yoga, too, but I don't run around town in my yoga clothes if I'm not on the way to/from a class.

by Anonymousreply 50August 14, 2014 4:57 PM

If women only knew how fabulous they look in dresses and skirts they would never wear jeans or leggings.

by Anonymousreply 51August 14, 2014 5:01 PM

The high-end denim market has become over-saturated in recent years, but luxury denim pieces will remain fashionable and championed by the magazines. And it will never be replaced as the staple workwear of manual and outdoor workers.

But, it's true that the average female consumer is turning away from jeans to sports inspired pieces. And that decision is definately based on the fact that fat women are not comfortable in jeans.

The big thing in pants right now is the return of the jogger, for all day wear. Jogging pants with an elasticated ankle, in jersey or modal, will be everywhere for the next few years.

by Anonymousreply 63July 10, 2021 3:46 PM

Denim will never go out of fashion. For people with nice bodies, nothing says effortless, classic style like denim. And it goes with practically everything. Even if it "fades" for a season, it will come back stronger than ever because there is nothing like it. Just wait until September. Denim will be everywhere.

by Anonymousreply 64July 10, 2021 3:51 PM

Young fashion nut here. Denim is uncomfortable and honestly, is as trendy as butcher block in kitchens. People hate washing and pressing pants, so jeans apparently were the answer. I have two pairs of Hollister jeans in my closet right now I’ve worn for 8-9 years and still look brand new. Haven’t worn them since the pandemic and honestly, I’ll just save denim for winter. It’s much too hot for it in the sticky south where I live.

I have a pile of the now-discontinued USA-made Cone Mills Levis, mostly 501s. They tried to reproduce the quality of the 70s/80s Levis products. The Asian stuff they sell is worthless. But I'm ready for the clone revival whenever....

by Anonymousreply 72July 10, 2021 4:08 PM

Completely broken in 501s that are soft and have stretched and shrunken to fit perfectly are comfortable.

Unfortunately, it takes 90% of the jeans wearable life to reach that point, so you only get a short window to bask in the luxury of that comfort.

by Anonymousreply 73July 10, 2021 4:25 PM

True enough, only one pair of 501s from that pile is a nice broken-in pair as R73 describes.

by Anonymousreply 74July 10, 2021 5:08 PM

Now that I have that pair where I want it, I hang them out to dry instead using the dryer.... should last longer that way, but I don't think they handle washing that well either.

by Anonymousreply 82July 10, 2021 6:43 PM

I live in Houston and jeans are just too fucking hot most of the year. My sister wears a lot of leggings for comfort and they are fairly versatile according to her. She makes sure her blouses are past her ass and camel toe area though. Nothing worse than that.

by Anonymousreply 84July 10, 2021 7:28 PM

by Anonymousreply 85July 10, 2021 7:39 PM

R83...I hate that. The tops worn too short...seeing camel toe and every bit of bulge and ass crack. Definitely, you need to wear a long top over them. Most women don't look good in leggings.

I haven’t bought a pair of jeans in at least five years, probably closer to 10. During my quarantine closet purge I got rid of all of them except three pairs: one nice dark pair, cannot remember the brand but I got them at Lord & Taylor marked down to about $40 (never in a million years would I spend over $100 on jeans), a pair of wranglers for working outside, and a pair of flannel lined jeans from LL Bean also for working outside or just to wear when it’s freezing out. I haven’t worn any of these since pre-pandemic.

by Anonymousreply 103July 10, 2021 8:54 PM

I just don't understand why overweight women have embraced leggings. Jeans give a little bit of structure (but not too much to get the dreaded muffin top.) I read a woman over 40 should not even leave the house without wearing (at least lightweight) Spanx. Instead they are wearing thin, see-through knit wear?

by Anonymousreply 104July 10, 2021 8:56 PM

It's insane, R104! Cottage cheese butt everywhere you look.

by Anonymousreply 105July 10, 2021 9:04 PM

I am not overweight but I do have chronic back pain and I can tell you that the extra weight of jeans makes a very big difference in my pain level. Also, it makes a difference in laundry weight. The laundry basket I struggle to get up and down the stairs with is a much heavier chore when washing jeans. Now I must tell my husband, who only wears jeans, that he may have to make a change. This will end in tears. My poor baby.

by Anonymousreply 106July 10, 2021 9:06 PM

I last bought a pair of jeans two years ago, a pair of Japanese selvedge fabric made to measure by a small clothing manufacturer in Barcelona. They were on sale, marked down from €330 to €195. Very hipster, I know. They do look great and the fit is brilliant; they have a jeans cut with the distinctive pockets, etc., but the fabric (meant to last decades) is sturdy as fuck and they don't read as jeans really. And one pai cost less than twice what i paid for each for the last two pairs of Levi's jeans five years ago.

Over the last five years I was moving away from making the my uniform (like Ralph Lauren continues) to a smaller part of my wardrobe.

I used to have a stack of jeans, now I'm down to three and will be happy with just one when that time comes.

Ordinary jeans look a little...ordinary, and outdated. Modern jeans look a little too...modern. I'm glad to have found a pair that should last, both physically and look good on me over time.

I bought a pair of black jeans in Zumies, they were so thin, they were almost not jeans. But cut like jeans. About 2% spanex or somethng similar. Very comfortable. But not really denim. I noticed the trend starting several years ago, guys (younger) wearing Adidas sweats and other athletic pants rather tha jeans. Jeans used to be the most comfortable pants.

I don't understand the leggings = comfort thing. In the summer?  I used to wear them in the late '80s/early '90s when they were the all the rage.  They were fine during a midwestern winter, but during humid summer? Nope.  Itchy, gross.

Jeans are fine during winter months. I have an old 501 pair and 550s from the late 80s that I still wear.  I find the skinny fit jeans restrictive - I hate the tight fit around the knee and calves.  Full disclosure: menopausal women's hot flashes and sweating are a full body phenomenon.  Back of knees, thighs, shins, etc.  No jeans in summer either, not because I'm overweight (5' 10", 150-155) but if I did on a summer day (today's 112° in Northern California), the abdominal area and underwear beneath would be damp or worse.  April - October is loose shorts time.

Oh, dear.  Sorry for the TMI.

I think both denim and leggings are awful.

Pity.. Nothing like sexy, thick-cotton, durable, and nicely fitting jeans getting snug in just the right places after a couple of washes on a nice body. They were at their best in the 1990s. Now that it's more difficult to find the only tolerable 100% cotton versions in lieu of the "mom" polyster-blend types, it's no surprise to hear something like this. The cheesy, stretchy look of those new synthetic-material jeans on even a well-built, hot guy is not a turn-on to me.

R126 Really? You sound like an updated Wallis Simpson.

R127, I beg to differ about jeans being hottest in the 1990s. The late 70s and early 80s was when men and women started wearing skin tight jeans that made everyone’s asses look sexy.

Cotton is rotten.

Jeans used to be associated with hot guys with sexy asses. Now they’re associated with lazy slobs who can’t pull up their damn pants!

It’s really hard to buy a good old denim jacket.

I went to the thrift store to find one and even the men’s versions were bedazzled with shit, or were artfully torn, or were acid wash.

lots of men are wearing skinny jeans...

lots of fraus are wearing work out tights to supermarket, just everywhere...even the very fat ones.

When I was in high school ca. 1982 all of the kids wore blue jeans- a few, including me wore Levi's Corduroys.

Since the majority of women seem to be wearing tights that pull so far up their cracken that they end up looking like tattoos made to look like peddle pushers, I'm not surprised that denim is dying.

In fact, I'm surprised denim didn't die when more popular, considering where it had to snuggle.

Ok. What is going on in the world today with a thread that originated in 2014 on denim of all things that's dead for six years only to be bumped every 6 months since 2020? How does one even find it to bump it? Otherwise, someone must really love denim! Or hate it...

In the late 1960s in Hicksville, Long Island, New York, I swear you needed a note from your parents if you wore bell bottoms to school.
