I especially like the story about them performing for the Queen Mother. BTW, why wasn't she known as Elizabeth II instead of her daughter?

by Anonymousreply 1June 23, 2014 1:45 PM

This list should be titled "14 Irrelevant Things That Will Never Be of Any Use To Anyone".

When did the series end? 25 or 30 years ago? It's time to move on, my darlings.

by Anonymousreply 2June 23, 2014 1:46 PM

"BTW, why wasn't she known as Elizabeth II instead of her daughter?"

She wasn't the monarch in her own right. She was a queen consort (wife of the monarch).

by Anonymousreply 3June 23, 2014 1:49 PM

R1, learn the difference between queen regnant and queen consort.

by Anonymousreply 4June 23, 2014 2:01 PM

by Anonymousreply 6June 24, 2014 3:40 AM

#8 - extra house guest? So Coco the "Fancy Man" was a guest? hmm.

I've idly wondered why the should would've been like if they'd kept him on. I guess when Sophia came on, he was no longer necessary. But still, could've been funny

Another fact is that Lee Grant was originally offered the role of Dorothy.

She turned it down because she felt she was too young to play a grandmother.

Number 5 is bullshit. Golden Girls never aired in England.

by Anonymousreply 11June 24, 2014 3:19 PM

R11 actually it did.

The four of the actress actually flew over to the UK to do a special command performance for Queen Elizabeth.

[quote]While Rue McClanahan and Betty White were close, on and off-set, their co-star Bea Arthur had a rocky relationship with both ladies. After the show ended, McClanahan revealed Arthur's intense dislike for White, recounting a story of a drunken Arthur calling White a "c--t" at a lifetime achievement award ceremony. McClanahan admitted Arthur didn't much prefer her either. “Bea and I didn’t have a lot of relationship going on," McClanahan said in an interview. "Bea is a very, very eccentric woman. She wouldn’t go to lunch [with me] unless Betty [White] would go with her."

This is the only item that is of interest.

by Anonymousreply 15June 24, 2014 3:29 PM

R14 the link at R13 says otherwise.

by Anonymousreply 16June 24, 2014 3:30 PM

The link is lying. Yes, the girls went to England to perform for the Queen but not because the show was airing in England. It wasn't. It's just the English like to see Americans grovelling towards their royal family, it makes them feel they still rule the Americas.

Adding to R18's comment: Betty White says that the show had been running in the UK for several months before they were asked to do the Royal Command Performance (in Here We Go Again, page 255).

It was remade in England (and the USSR, if I recall) but both countries showed the original first, before the remakes.

R11 et al. is committed, I'll give him that.

by Anonymousreply 27June 24, 2014 3:56 PM

Those are wrong.

For instance Betty White was NEVER cast as Blanche. Susan Harris was asked who she'd like to see in what parts and she said, she'd like to do Maude and Viv meet Sue Ann.

It was Rue and Betty who wanted to switch roles and Maude refused to do it, till Vivian asked her to.

In addition all the girls read and wanted to do Sofia, who wasn't even a major character at that point, but was just to drop over reoccurringly.

In the end Rue was always Blanche, Betty White was always Rose and Maude only agreed to come on board when Susan Harris said she'd make Dorothy less "Maude-like"

by Anonymousreply 28June 24, 2014 4:28 PM

R10 and knowing her, she probably STILL feels that way.

by Anonymousreply 29June 24, 2014 5:26 PM

R28, are you drunk already?

by Anonymousreply 30June 24, 2014 5:28 PM

So Bea hated Betty White, but wouldn't go to lunch with Rue unless she came along? That doesn't make any sense. And contradicts what Rue always said about her friendship with Bea from the days of Maude.

by Anonymousreply 31June 24, 2014 5:40 PM

I wondered that as well, R31. Also, if Bea didn't like Betty or rue, why the socializing?

by Anonymousreply 32June 24, 2014 5:59 PM

R32,

I always took the anecdote to mean that they were on their way to lunch at the commissary, not normal socializing.

by Anonymousreply 33June 24, 2014 6:07 PM

I don't get the one on Estelle Getty having stage fright. She was a stage actress. It doesn't seem to make any sense. But maybe she had "stage fright" doing a TV show in front of a live audience? I don't know. I've always heard stage actors are better at live audiences.

by Anonymousreply 34June 24, 2014 6:12 PM

No matter where they were going to be eating, why insist on the presence of someone you supposedly hate?

The whole "are they friends in real life" obsession is always so stupid. Acting's a job, not a "family." Particularly for people who've been in the business a long time and are shrewd enough to build popular careers.

by Anonymousreply 35June 24, 2014 6:15 PM

Estelle Getty had a phobia of death.

And then she died.

by Anonymousreply 36June 24, 2014 6:15 PM

Yes, the "phobia of death" thing is ridiculous. She was an older woman who probably had some idea of health issues she was likely to experience. A lot of people develop a distaste for the discussion of death without it becoming an "interesting fact."

by Anonymousreply 37June 24, 2014 6:18 PM

R35,

I think it's considered some sort of actor decorum to have lunch with your castmates. I know the Brits make a big deal of this "being a good egg" sort of thing.

by Anonymousreply 38June 24, 2014 6:21 PM

Queen Elizabeth II's reign over England has been a walk in the park compared to past rulers or the fictional would-be rulers of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. So it makes sense that on her visit to the "Game of Thrones" set Tuesday, she declined to sit in the Iron Throne. Who wants to tempt fate like that?

According to the Associated Press, the 88-year-old monarch visited the Titanic Studios in Belfast, Northern Ireland, which is home to the interior sets for HBO's hit series "Game of Thrones." Production has wrapped on the show's fourth season, but cast members Lena Headey, Conleth Hill, Rose Leslie, Kit Harington, Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams were on hand to greet the queen and her party.

by Anonymousreply 39June 24, 2014 8:19 PM

Estelle didn't have stage fright. At the height of her success as an actress, she started showing signs of the disease that would ultimately kill her.

She couldn't remember her lines, and it caused havoc behind the scenes. Eventually they had to write all her lines on cue cards.

At the time everyone thought it was nerves, never realizing the problem was much bigger.

by Anonymousreply 40June 24, 2014 8:24 PM

Rue feel asleep where ever she could. They found her every where sleep one time behind the sofa.

by Anonymousreply 45March 25, 2016 5:26 AM

Nr 10: Rue moved to NYC, where she had an apartment, but she kept calling to Betty and Estelle (not sure about Bea). Estelle lost her memories and didn't know, who Rue was, but she still kept calling, because she was her friend. Betty and Rue kept calling each other until Rue died. Betty called and talked to her just few days before.

by Anonymousreply 46March 25, 2016 11:06 PM

Estelle was nervous because the others were far more experienced in TV. Rue did say she had stage fright as well.

by Anonymousreply 47March 25, 2016 11:54 PM

R42, if you read the article at the link, the gold refers to the awards the show won. TGG is one of three shows whose cast members all won Emmys.

Bea Arthur lost quite a bit of weight before she began "The Golden Girls" because she didn't want to look like Maude for her new series.

by Anonymousreply 57March 31, 2016 12:19 PM

Bea Arthur always seemed like an unyielding cunt to me. Probably because she was always an ugly bitch.

by Anonymousreply 58March 31, 2016 12:21 PM

Did you know that Bea would get right up into Estelle's face and belch as hard as she could? There was also an ongoing rumor that Bea was regularly defecating in Betty's wardrobe closet.

by Anonymousreply 59March 31, 2016 1:16 PM

R59 That's probably true because at one time, you could buy some of Bea Arthur's doo doos on Ebay. A stagehand scooped them up, froze them, then sold Bea's doo doos on Ebay.

by Anonymousreply 60March 31, 2016 1:32 PM

Bea came to the set drunk sometimes she would fight with the makeup artist.

by Anonymousreply 70April 10, 2016 2:50 PM

That new GG book by Frank Dicarro's kept boy is enjoyable but a bit of a disorganized mess. Great tidbits but poorly organized.

by Anonymousreply 71April 10, 2016 2:58 PM

GG was very popular in Britain. The Brighton Belles was a flop. Frank Thornton (Captain Peacock on Are You Being Served) briefly talked about it in some documentary on British comedy. He said that GG became so popular in Britain, but that Brighton Belles failed because they couldn't capture the American humor that made the original show so funny. They tried to British-ize the show, and it just didn't work.

by Anonymousreply 72April 10, 2016 3:07 PM

I can understand Bea hating Betty. Betty seems like someone I'd hate. Her sweet old lady routine has always been fake. She seems like she's always been a big cunt. She's probably been fucking dogs too. All her animal rights bullshit.

Rue has said that she was supposed to play Rose and that Betty was supposed to be Blanche, but at the last minute they switched parts. This was before Bea joined. Rue called Bea hoping that she'd play Dorothy. Bea responded that she didn't want to do "Maude and Vivian Meet Sue Ann Nivens." When Rue explained that they switched the parts, Bea became very interested. Elaine Stritch was up for Dorothy, but she gave a terrible audition. Billie Bird was their first choice for Sophia. She was currently appearing on the Witt-Harris show Benson and she had worked with Witt-Harris on their short-lived Patty Duke/Richard Crenna sitcom It Takes Too. However, there were some contractual issues with the Benson role, and they couldn't move her over to GG.

Here is that royal performance. It was done in the midst of Season 4, so the routine is just a hodgepodge of previous scenes, with a hint of British.

BTW: It was the Queen Mum, not Elizabeth II, who was the big fan. I don't get the person going around saying that it never aired in the UK. BRIGHTON BELLES premiered in 1993, a year after GG went off the air and years after it had been airing on UK TV.

Which was a refreshing change from the hardcore leather daddy porn loops that the gay bar I went I to in Toronto was showing.

by Anonymousreply 95August 7, 2017 5:48 PM

Bea hated Betty because Betty got Rue the job playing Aunt Fran on Mama's Family.

Then Betty called Bea and said she had a part for her on Mama's Family, and Bea thought, of course, she'd play the star part of Mama.

But Betty was like "No, it's the part of Naomi." So Bea called her a few choice names and it was never the same between them.

by Anonymousreply 96June 22, 2019 4:54 PM

R96: Is there ANY citation to back this up? Naomi is a vixen neighbor who ends up with Vint. She was supposed to be his age, early 40s I'd guess. Bea Arthur was well into her 50s, near 60 when Mama's Family debuted. She doesn't fit the character profile at all. Your story really makes no sense.

by Anonymousreply 97June 22, 2019 6:06 PM

I would also like to see an actual episode of the Brighton Belles as well. Everyone says it was bad, but as Patsy Stone always said "I'll be the judge of that!"

by Anonymousreply 106June 23, 2019 12:32 AM

by Anonymousreply 107June 23, 2019 12:46 AM

Bea Arthur and Betty White were supposed to be Kate and Allie, but Bea refused because she said the show presented them as lesbians.

The producers said they'd give each of them children to make it clear they were straight, but Bea said they were too old to have kids so young.

Then Betty said, "Well we'll just say they were adopted." And Bea said "That makes it seem exactly like they're lesbos"

And Bea hit Betty with a rolled up newspaper and left. Things were never the same again between the ladies.

They were different but got along alright most of the time.

15. Rue McClanahan was always leaving her snot rags around the set "as a joke."

17. Bea often retired to her trailer in tears after a day of cruel jokes taking aim at her looks.

by Anonymousreply 127June 24, 2019 9:12 PM

Previously, Betty White had always been cast as a "bitch" type (Mary Tyler Moore) and Rue McClanahan had been cast as the "dingbat" type (Maude) so it was surprising that they were cast as the opposites...and the eventual casting of Betty as Rose and Rue as Blanche remains one of the reasons that I think the show took off...people were used to those two being the opposite.
