Does anyone here remember '60s actress Carol White?

She was more famous in Britain, but she came to America and it was her downfall. Ended up making mostly trash. She turned down "Women in Love" for the American dream and "Daddy's Gone A-Hunting".

I read her autobiography and I have never read such promiscuity in my life. They obviously told her to 'put in a lot of sex, that way it will sell' and she clearly didn't need to try very hard.

But she was pretty and had a sort of innocent charm.

Paul Burke of VOTD fame really gave her the runaround.

She rose to fame playing low class British trash. She was 40 years ahead of her time. Today she'd be married to a James McAvoy or the star of a low class reality show.

Suzanne Somers was her body double in Daddy's Gone A-Hunting

Anne Marie Duff must be ten years older than McAvoy (even if she won't admit to it). He's about 35 so he'll be leaving her for someone younger soon.

What did Paul Burke do to her???

The whole of "Cathy Come Home" starring Carol White is on YT.

Very sad, but worth watching even if only once.

Funny stories about Carol White.

At the Cannes Film Festival in 1968, because she was the British actress of the moment they asked her if she spoke French and if so, would she read the memoriam to recently deceased, fellow British actress, Vivian Leigh. She said that of course she could speak French and would be honoured.

In fact she barely understood a word and read the regretful and mournful memoriam smiling and laughing the whole way through.

Later in the festival they took her onto the jetties that went into the sea, where hot actresses were always photographed and somehow she fell off the jetty and into the sea.

"I'll Never Forget What's 'isname" from 1967...has, strangely, just been put onto YT...the whole film, for anyone who likes swinging London films it's a treat.

bump for Carol

Carol White was a poor man's Julie Christie. She was very ordinary and "Daddys Gone-a-Hunting" was a disappointment. Other actresses would have been better in it.

Poor Carol was the ill-fated one of the those Swinging 60s girls - Julie Christie, Susannah York, Sarah Miles, Samantha Egger, Rita Tushingam - and then Carol.

She had a few iconic parts: Cathy Come Home, Poor Cow, her sudden demise in I'll Never Forget Whats hisname, was she in Up The Junction?

She was forced to strip in the 70s film The Squeeze (also Stephen Boyd's last) where both she and her character are humiliated.

Going to America didn't do her any good.

She wasn't a very good actress. She was in the very powerful Cathy Come Home and it gave the illusion she was a better actress than she was.

But she was pretty and had a sort of innocent charm about her.

Most promising star of 1967 @ link.

Yes, the TV version...not the movie. Suzy Kendall was and was very bad in it.

Paul Burke ruined the TV series 12 O'clock High by replacing cool Robert Lansing

Now, this?

Did she take to alcohol and pills in the 70s? She has the body of a 50 year old in "The Squeeze".

White’s story is a fascinating one, would be most interested to read her book!

by Anonymousreply 21July 4, 2018 7:14 PM

Meh.

by Anonymousreply 22July 4, 2018 10:17 PM

She wrote a book. I'd never read such promiscuity in a movie star's autobiography in my life.

Clearly she was told write a lot of sex and she did.
