Jim McGreevey
The vestige of a society where there was enough pressure to override the homosexual nature of a man and force him into marriage and parenthood in a 'normitive' heterosexual way.
He was a victim of the times.
He is forgiven.
He is one hot Episcopal daddy.
DL always forgives the hot daddy.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | June 5, 2014 3:09 PM |
Horrible governor. He was insanely corrupt and only came out when he was facing blackmail. We dont need someone like that on our team.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | June 5, 2014 3:28 PM |
The Episcopal Bishops haven't forgiven him. Jimmy will never be ordained.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | June 5, 2014 3:35 PM |
R4 To be fair, it seems the sleazebags mostly concentrate their efforts on the governors desk. The state senators and reps NJ send to Washington are no better and no worse than any other state. But every governor starting with and including Christine Whitman has been disastrous for the state.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | June 5, 2014 4:25 PM |
His tourism ad for NJ (which featured smiling wife and kids) was an unintentional hoot:
"Come OUT, and see what's changed in Jersey".
I remember Musto remarking:
"Honey, I already came out. And I'm staying right here."
by Anonymous | reply 5 | June 5, 2014 4:35 PM |
Fraud, yes.
Crusader for gay rights? When did that ever happen? Link?
Criminal, absolutely. He was the governor of New Jersey, so it's a prerequisite for the job.
Victim of his time? Hardly. There were out gay politicians in the 90s. They were difficult to elect and did not wield the power of a powerful governorship like New Jersey, but they were out and they worked hard and they didn't get killed or driven out of town by pitchfork-wielding citizens. They just didn't get elected much, which meant they didn't get the power, influence and access that elected official of high offices do.
I other words, Jim Mcgreevey didn't closet himself out of fear, he didn't marry Dina Matenoupolos because he wouldn't be able to find work without a wife and he didn't have a kid with her because he lived under an oppressive theocracy.
He did all of that because he wanted to be governor of NJ, and possibly a Senator or even President. He closeted himself and fabricated an entire heterosexual life for himself out of blind ambition.
He was not a victim of anything but his own lies and bad judgment.
And you should be publicly beheaded for calling him the "LuvGuv". Where the fuck did you pull that from?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | June 5, 2014 4:38 PM |
We would be more sympathetic if he hadn't decided to be a priest.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | June 5, 2014 4:49 PM |
An Israeli spy named Golan Cipel used gay sex to blackmail the governor for a high position at NJ Homeland Security. And when he was busted, the spy was granted unfettered passage back to Israel. Then the US media swept the Israeli spy story under the carpet.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | June 5, 2014 4:50 PM |
R7 Least we forget, Dina Matenoupolos was his second wife. He had been married before and has a child from that marriage. Wife #1 now lives in Canada with the kid. Not much is known about her, she has consistently declined to talk to the press.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | June 5, 2014 4:52 PM |
The New York tabloids ALWAYS called him "the LuvGuv".
by Anonymous | reply 10 | June 5, 2014 4:53 PM |
I always use him as an example to others -- and to myself when I want to delude myself -- when I point out a guy (or a hot guy) who's married with kids.
Maybe he's truly a Gay American?

by Anonymous | reply 16 | June 5, 2014 6:00 PM |
"Hardly. There were out gay politicians in the 90s"
They were not governors.
"Barney Frank never married a woman, and he's been out since before Mcgreevey finished high school."
He never held statewide office
"Mr. Cipel recounts the lurid details of Gov. McGreevey's wickedness."
He has changed his story multiple times. He's just a closet case who doesn't want to admit he's gay.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | June 5, 2014 6:04 PM |
Mr. Cipel used the governor to get a position in the NJ Dept. of Homeland Security. His status as a non-citizen of the USA made it impossible for him to pass a security clearance. For that reason he was quickly removed from his position.
Cipel then threatened to out the governor unless McGreevey reinstated Cipel at Homeland Security. The governor responded by outing himself and resigning. Cipel was never prosecuted for blackmailing a state's highest official. One suspects Cipel was protected by higher-ups within the US government.
Imagine what would have happened if an Iranian spy had been caught doing what Cipel did.

[quote]They were not governors.
I know. I made that point in my post. The whole point of my post was that Mcgreevey closeted himself out of ambition, and not just vague ambition to succeed in life but specific ambition towards powerful offices and positions.
Like Governor. If he had just wanted to pursue a career in public service he could have done that as an openly gay man in the 1990s. Not easily and with no guarentee of success, but if you've read this far and possess the reading comprehension skills of a sixth grader, you understand that that is exactly my point.
Did you have a point at R19? Or is that just your little personal scorecard that you're keeping to judge everyone else's actual points?
by Anonymous | reply 23 | June 5, 2014 6:38 PM |
r25, you are the dumb one. Instead of attacking McGreevey you should attack the system that makes people closet themselves. People should have the same opportunities - gays should be able to become governors just like straights. If so many people weren't homophobic then politicians wouldn't have to hide in the closet.
I was disagreeing with people who brought up Barney Frank, like that's even close to being the same situation....

[qoute]Didn't McGreevey break his leg falling out of a tall lifeguard's chair while having sex with Cipel?
From what I recall, the leg injury happened very early in his term, before he met Cipel. But it was a strange story. He and his wife were in Cape May for the weekend. He went out for a walk at like 3am and somehow fell off the boardwalk and injured himself. The story was so crazy, especially the hour it occurred. The press and a lot of people in Trenton knew the truth about McGreevey well before he came out. But for whatever reason they kept their mouths shut.

R26 McGreevey being in the closet is only the tip of the iceberg. The man was a crook, a scumbag, a gritter. Think Richard Nixon, only not as bright and a hell of a lot shorter.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | June 5, 2014 7:13 PM |
Is McGreevey short, R36? He looks tall.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | June 5, 2014 7:32 PM |
[quote] Instead of attacking McGreevey you should attack the system that makes people closet themselves.
McGreevey was not the victim of any "system that makes people closet themselves".
He did not grow up in an ultra religious environment. He grew up in New Jersey.
And he did not have to run for Governor -- no one forced him to do that. So no one forced him to closet himself.
He took that upon himself, marrying two women and fathering children with both of them, all along reaping heterosexual privilege while denying homosexual identity, visibility and progress.
Anyone shedding tears for Jim McGreevey as a "victim of the closet" is seriously misreading events.
HE VOLUNTARILY DENIED HIS SEXUALITY IN EXCHANGE FOR POWER AND PRIVILEGE. HE ONLY CAME OUT ONCE THE RUSE WAS IRREPARABLY UP.
Stop painting him as a martyr. He's nothing but an opportunist and he'd no doubt still be closeted today (on wife #3? #4?) if it stilled paved an easier path to power and privilege for him.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | June 5, 2014 7:42 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 38 | June 5, 2014 8:24 PM |
R30. Read R31's response.
McGreevey played the martyr when his gayness was exposed--because he was married to a woman. "I'm a 'gay American.'"
But the media wasn't going after him because he was gay. They were going after him because he was governor and acting criminally and inappropriately because it concerned matters of the state of New Jersey. His sexual orientation was the side show.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | June 5, 2014 8:33 PM |
Exactly R41. He tried to make it seem the reason he quit was because he was outed. Him being gay had NOTHING to do with it. We are talking New Jersey, its not Alabama, no one cares about shit like that. The fact that he used his coming out as a smoke screen for the REAL reasons he quit is really quite disgusting. In a way, he was saying "me being gay is far worse than me being a crook, a liar, a griffter and a cheater". As I said before, we dont need someone like him on our team.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | June 5, 2014 8:46 PM |
He hired a rentboy to act as the Head of Homeland Security for a state that is a boatride away from Ground Zero.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | June 5, 2014 8:47 PM |
McGreevey's press conference was nauseating. "The truth is I'm a gay American."
Spare us, you slimeball. Tell that to your wife.
The fact that McGreevey was governor and closeted is a news story. However, the investigation was no so much about his sexual orientation but actually why he put his secret boyfriend (who wasn't even a citizen, or perhaps he was a new citizen) on the payroll in a security position.
McGreevey is no better than Ken Mehlman. But we don't want either of them in our little group.

I agree. IIRC, his approval rating, which was in the low 40s before coming out, jumped up about 6% after his Gay American speech. And because of that, after about a month, one of his political cronies, State Senator Ray Lesniak, floated the idea that maybe the governor might not step down after all. (Those of you not from NJ probably didn't know McG didn't step down until about two months after the speech.) Needless to say, Lesniak's observation didn't go over well with the residents who felt, "How can we miss him if he won't go away?"
To his credit, if nothing else, didn't McGreevey help preserve The Highlands?
And, well, he did [italic]drastically[/italic] shrink the wait at DMV - something that remained so until the Fat One came into office.
McGreevey is now working under Jersey City's gay mayor (Steve Fulop) in some position - something to do with the prisoner re-entry population.
BTW, is R5 Jim Florio?
by Anonymous | reply 46 | June 5, 2014 10:13 PM |
Thanks, R47. It was interesting. Though I grew up in NJ, I haven't set foot in the state in decades, so I never heard of the guy until he came out, so I don't have the stored-up hatred all you current-day New Jerseyans feel for the man.
I grew up in a very conservative Catholic parish not unlike McGreevey's. So I relate to his struggle somewhat. I haven't any bad feeling for the guy, and he now lives in the town I grew up in, which was nice to see in that film.
He's kind of cute, actually. I'd fuck him.

I don't think that's accurate. I read that she wasn't with him in Cape May. When he was injured, she was flown there so it would appear to the press that she had been in Cape May with him. She knew what the deal was and was happy to be a beard for the attention she would get as First Lady of NJ.

The crap that Jim deservedly gets is one of the true signs of how far lgbt persons have come. In the olden days we would have been all "you poor persecuted soul" and now we're just calling him on his shit and his lies. No one bought the "I am a Gay American" crap for very long.
Marrying not once but twice shows even more why he was doing this - to get ahead, not because he was being persecuted. If he'd had the balls to come out earlier he could at least have had some respect but, as it was, he was a criminal who got caught and then tried to get a pity party going by the whole "I am a gay American" crap.

Maybe he should "bother to do anything to help" (are we still talking about gay rights???) because it's the right thing to do and he himself is a gay man with a lifetime of experiences, and should therefore know better.
This is really not that confusing for most people.
Anyone who bases morality choices on "the treatment he can expect" after the fact is pretty much the definition of immoral.

If you want a really good laugh, check your mirror to see someone who thinks the gay community should accept Ken Mehlman assistance with anything.
The Rethuglicunt dipshit Mehlman worked to give us eight years of a moron who ignored all warnings of 9-11, invaded a nation to look for invisible weapons of mass destruction, caused the deaths of ten of thousands on both sides of the Bush War, sent the economy of the entire planet down the tubes, became Commander in Chief when he actually was a military deserter, funneled billions of dollars to Cheney-Halliburton, and ruined the good reputation of the U.S. in every single nation.
