What is it about Neil Patrick Harris that is such a turn-off?

I used to really cheer for this guy, and I still want him to succeed, but at the same time I agree with a lot of people in wishing he'd go away for a while.

He seems nice enough, I suppose. But he also seems smug and arrogant and to have begun taking himself way too seriously.

He's like the A-list version of that queen from that Modern Family show.. Omnipresent and self worshiping.

Is it wrong to be sick of a successful gay actor? It's just become hard to root for him.

by Anonymousreply 135May 15, 2018 3:59 PM

Absolutely nothing.

You are a turnoff, OP.

by Anonymousreply 2April 29, 2014 4:45 PM

I'm not a fan. I think he's an ok actor/performer but nothing special. His Hedwig is 'eh' while John Cameron Mitchell and Michael Cerveris' interpretations were magical.

I think he'd make a good talk show host but that's about it.

by Anonymousreply 3April 29, 2014 4:45 PM

I agree with R1, he's amazing, can do it all

by Anonymousreply 4April 29, 2014 4:48 PM

I don't find him in the least attractive, but he's a good singer and actor.

by Anonymousreply 5April 29, 2014 4:48 PM

He is constantly mugging.

Next question.

by Anonymousreply 6April 29, 2014 4:48 PM

I like him, but I'm a straight chick. BUT will agree there's something about him - sort of attenuated, snot-nose "kid", even at 40. No humility,or if there IS: well-hidden.

I give him and Burtka about 3 more years...

by Anonymousreply 7April 29, 2014 4:48 PM

He does this thing where he winks at the audience as if to say, "Isn't it funny that I'm pretending to be smug and take myself so seriously?" which is used to cover his smugness and high self regard.

It's stupid and childish and annoying.

by Anonymousreply 8April 29, 2014 4:50 PM

He's more of a brand than an actor at this point.

by Anonymousreply 9April 29, 2014 4:51 PM

He's not smug. He's quite charming.

Very talented man.

by Anonymousreply 10April 29, 2014 4:52 PM

I genuinely like him, but I don't think even his fans can say in all honesty he's not smug.

by Anonymousreply 11April 29, 2014 4:54 PM

So you saw the show R3- guess you disagree with the rave review in the NY Times.

Yet another DL thread where a successful, well adjusted and nice person in the public eye is burned at the stake in posts that say more about the poster than NPH.

And what do you do OP?

by Anonymousreply 12April 29, 2014 4:55 PM

WW for R12.

by Anonymousreply 13April 29, 2014 4:55 PM

[all posts by childish idiot removed]

by Anonymousreply 14April 29, 2014 4:57 PM

[quote]And what do you do OP?

Yet again: the bizarre and ridiculous idea among DL stans that only more successful actors are allowed to criticize or dislike other actors.

by Anonymousreply 15April 29, 2014 4:58 PM

Still R16, I am waiting for the OP to provide some sort of basis for his "criticism" since it is so ludicrous. Does not mean that only more successful anything can only discuss. It really is more in the vein of say something stupid and you will get a stupid question in return-

by Anonymousreply 16April 29, 2014 5:13 PM

WW for R16

by Anonymousreply 17April 29, 2014 5:14 PM

Well anyone can tell their opinions, and mine is that NPH is great. We are talking about a very successful actor and celebrity here. Practically ALL of them are narcissists to a point. They love attention, they love to show how wonderful they are to the public because that's their career and their livelihood. I'm sure all of them (or their teams) are constantly thinking about the image they are giving out to the public.

NPH's public image reminds me a bit of his super cool dude image from HIMYM. He's also a poster boy for gays. There is toughness in his image, and I see that as a good thing. Would you like to see him being a soft gay guy like that embarrassing fat guy character in Modern Guy? I wouldn't. NPH is a professional actor and comes off as bit of a tough son of a bitch, but with intelligence and some empathy.

I'm actually more wary about the supposedly humble stars because I get a feeling that I'm looking at a carefully constructed facade when I see them. Not that there aren't sweethearts out there but when you start thinking about it how softie sweetheart can you be if you get to the top of entertainment industry?

NPH is a gay samurai.

by Anonymousreply 18April 29, 2014 5:24 PM

He has a rat face. That's my problem.

by Anonymousreply 19April 29, 2014 5:26 PM

I heart R19 almost as much as I heart Neil.

by Anonymousreply 20April 29, 2014 5:26 PM

Doogie is tough and a samurai? What are you smoking, R19?

by Anonymousreply 21April 29, 2014 5:28 PM

(Obviously I meant Modern Family in my R19 post. Oops.)

R22, NPH is not Doogie anymore. He's a tough guy, and that's one of the reasons I love him.

by Anonymousreply 22April 29, 2014 5:32 PM

There's an unhinged NPH fan frau on the loose!

by Anonymousreply 23April 29, 2014 5:38 PM

I like him and wish him well. But: .. I think we are all suffering from his overexposure. (sit-com, Broadway, Awards Host, talk show guest, etc.) Too much of a good thing becomes tiresome. Same with Audra. She is everywhere!! Same with Renée Flemming. Also, ubiquitous. If they were to stagger their New York appearances, we'd appreciate them more.

by Anonymousreply 24April 29, 2014 5:44 PM

I like NPH. I don't think anyone who saw the opening number from the 2013 Tonys can dispute his talent. And r15. you're a little bitch

by Anonymousreply 25April 29, 2014 5:44 PM

Nope, R25. Can't get enough of him.

by Anonymousreply 26April 29, 2014 5:46 PM

How is he a "tough guy"? That's certainly not reflected in the roles he plays or his public persona. I like the guy but this "tough guy" label is absurd.

by Anonymousreply 27April 29, 2014 5:50 PM

[quote]suffering from his overexposure

While we're on the topic of James Franco...

by Anonymousreply 28April 29, 2014 5:53 PM

He took a lot of industry dick up the ass to get to where he is

by Anonymousreply 29April 29, 2014 6:01 PM

R24, are you talking about me? Sorry to disappoint but I've been male and (mostly) gay all my life. I have absolutely nothing against soft hearted people (I tend to fall for them hard) but I appreciate NPH for being what he is, a business savvy entertainer. I'm not even his fan but I love him for being a tough gay cookie.

R28, I'm a bit surprised that people still think of him as being something like Doogie Howser. I'm not saying that NPH is some mob psycho but that he doesn't take bullshit and is probably up there with Madonna and Betty White in being in control. But he's also a gay bro, if one can use that term with him.

by Anonymousreply 30April 29, 2014 6:05 PM

why do gay guys always have to turn on any gay man who is successful and has it all?

by Anonymousreply 31April 29, 2014 6:11 PM

Meh. I really dont know much about him to have much of an opinion. I dont hate him, but I dont go out of my way to see anything he does. He's not ugly, but his looks are the sort of average looks which can be found anywhere. He's mostly a television actor from a sort of lame and predictable sit-com.

by Anonymousreply 32April 29, 2014 6:12 PM

Your disgust towards homosexuality. Homophobia affects some gay men.

by Anonymousreply 33April 29, 2014 6:22 PM

"why do gay guys always have to turn on any gay man who is successful and has it all?"

I don't know that this is true of all gay guys, but it certainly seems to be for the majority who post here regularly.

Another gay man's success is a painful and constant reminder of how sad their own lives have turned out to be.

by Anonymousreply 34April 29, 2014 6:24 PM

His name, for a start.

by Anonymousreply 35April 29, 2014 6:29 PM

As an out gay man in the public eye, NPH serves as a good example to young gays who are struggling with coming out. For that reason alone, I'm glad he's enjoying his work and family.

For the real turn-off: The closeted gays who cause damage to the gay comminity. In the top tier, there's closeted Congressgayman Aaron Schock who attacks the gay community with his anti-gay votes.

by Anonymousreply 36April 29, 2014 6:33 PM

I think you sum it up nicely, OP.

I don't dislike the guy (though I couldn't give a damn about Broadway song and dance shit or pretty much anything he's been in.) I wish him well; in fact I'd like to wish him well less equivocally, but Harris' ubiquity and smug humor somehow erode my goodwill.

Of course he's an entertainer and very much in the public eye, but I'm a little wary of people who can't seem to say no to invitations --any invitations-- to even a glint of the spotlight.

by Anonymousreply 37April 29, 2014 6:36 PM

He's very pleased with himself and I get the feeling he's always thinking about how witty and clever he is whenever he talks.

by Anonymousreply 38April 29, 2014 6:46 PM

I, like 98% of the posters here know why he's a turn off:

He's a homosexual.

by Anonymousreply 39April 29, 2014 6:48 PM

[all posts by tedious, racist idiot removed.]

by Anonymousreply 40April 29, 2014 6:50 PM

Turn OFF? OP must be asexual. I hate the Hedwig show, personally. But I would like to fuck Neil with every inch of my body, until he's in a trauma induced coma. He's incredibly sexy.

by Anonymousreply 41April 29, 2014 6:53 PM

I have to kind of agree with R40- a talented out guy achieving great success- and he's toast to a bunch of cranky (homophobic, internalized of course) anonymous grouches.

by Anonymousreply 42April 29, 2014 7:07 PM

Not my type, at all. He seems really nice though. His husband is also very likable, they make a great couple.

by Anonymousreply 43April 29, 2014 7:11 PM

I think it's his personna from HIMYM. He was arrogant, a tad smarmy and so egotistical I wanted to scream. That carryover is hard to sublimate, as for most people that role is paramount when people make a decision about him.He was so good as Barney, maybe we thought it was really him? I also believe there's a lot of resentment against NPH for all the years he denied being gay. He took his sweet time, and came out when it was extremely safe to do so. That rankled a lot of people.

by Anonymousreply 44April 29, 2014 8:03 PM

I think he's wonderful. Best Tony host ever. Saw him in "Rent" at the La Jolla Playhouse and he was awesome.

Would love to see his Hedwig.

He's out and smart. What's not to love.

OP, move on baby. You aren't funny nor talented and I suspect that you are MORE than usually PLAIN in the looks department.

by Anonymousreply 45April 29, 2014 8:07 PM

by Anonymousreply 51April 29, 2014 11:03 PM

his smugness

by Anonymousreply 52April 29, 2014 11:04 PM

He can do it all but he is not handsome. That's his major shortcoming for the entertainment profession.

Looks like the result if Luke Perry had a gay younger brother with an over inflated view of himself.

by Anonymousreply 53April 29, 2014 11:06 PM

I love NPH. He's sexy, smart and funny. And gay. What more do we want?? And I would let him fuck me bare, repeatedly.

by Anonymousreply 54April 29, 2014 11:08 PM

I think his great for the gay community however when I saw his pierced nipples I was really disappointed.

And I love this board, and am NOT the only straight woman on it.

But it's okay; I very much understand your point of view.

Thank you to the poster who provided some context (i.e., a name) re that soap opera star comment. I had forgotten about reading that on DL.

by Anonymousreply 64April 30, 2014 2:43 AM

Meh, I've disliked him since his boy doctor days and I'm not really sure why. A passable actor and not sexually appealing at all. Tough? Hot? People do have some diverse ideas, don't they?

by Anonymousreply 65April 30, 2014 2:46 AM

Eric Braeden [italic]is[/italic] a douchebag. That's kind, really.

by Anonymousreply 66April 30, 2014 3:10 AM

He was outed before he admitted he was gay. The important thing is that he represents the gay community very well. Happily he's no Chris Crocker and he's no Johnnie Weir.

Chronic Gay Face for days....Very " entertainerely"..smugness dipped in a sugary gay frosting. I can imagine Andy Cohen and Harris giggling while painting each others toe nails and talking about cute rent boys... would have been Liberace's best girl friend if Libby was still alive. Seems very self satisfied and only pretends to be humble. Appears to have set himself up as a " Gay A list " standard....much like Bob Paris and his boy friend, whats his name did in the 80's. Would prefer Alan Cummings over Harris as a friend/lover anyday !

by Anonymousreply 82November 14, 2014 5:34 AM

His Hedwig was so pedestrian. JCM nailed hedwig - NPH not so much (and Michael C Hall looks just horribly miscast in the role of an east german twink cum transrocker). I don't feel strongly about NPH either way, but I don't see why I should adore him just because he's out.

He just needs to step away for a moment to give people a chance to miss him.

People like that are usually two-faces. It's no wonder that actors are often like that, but not always. I suppose it goes with the territory of learning how to pretend to be something you're not convincingly.

by Anonymousreply 102November 14, 2014 9:48 AM

NPH has an audience who swallows up his narcissism. In that sense, he is not entirely to blame because he has been put in that position by them.

by Anonymousreply 103November 14, 2014 9:49 AM

r99 has nailed it. Obsessive narcissism makes anyone unattractive whether they are gay or straight.

The poster who likened NPH to Rob Jackson-Paris and his parter was very astute. For years, they were the Devoted Gay Couple Du Jour with the magazine articles and scores of photographs of them posing artfully. You could't avoid them. Then they broke up and vanished.

by Anonymousreply 104November 14, 2014 10:23 AM

To the asshole that said NPH only appealed to the AARP crowd , you couldn't be any more wrong. What is wrong is gay people hating on every successful gay person. Look at the posts here, you all hate Ellen, Andy Cohen, NPH, Chris Coffer , Dan Savage and the list goes on and on. We should be supportive , there is enough hatred in the world.

by Anonymousreply 105November 14, 2014 10:29 AM

Oh, please - r105. Gay celebs can be just as tiresome as straight celebs.

There are some gay celebs (like Brian Sims) who don't get any hate here.

by Anonymousreply 106November 14, 2014 10:41 AM

A lot of the professional gays are kind of dumb and making money off their Professional Gay for the straights status. Why must we "support" them? What I like about gay people that I know, or that I have admired and read about is that they have a capacity for critical analysis. It is kind of more of a straight thing to just follow without questioning...

by Anonymousreply 107November 14, 2014 10:43 AM

R105, we don't hate them because we hate everything.

(we don't even really "hate" them, but moving on)

See if you can figure this out: these are gays that straights like. Like pets! Straights love them some Will & Grace, they love them some Ellen, and they love them some NPH. But these are straight versions of what being gay is, and as such they are watered down to the point of being offensive - and personally I don't enjoy watching these step'n'fetchit types shuffling for Straightey, but that's just how it is.

by Anonymousreply 108November 14, 2014 10:44 AM

He's sexxy with two "x's"

by Anonymousreply 123August 24, 2017 3:18 PM

That's one more x because he's EXTRA sexy

If you're turned OFF by Neil Patrick Harris, you're jealous.

I watched his “73 Questions with vogue” video the other day. He’s still super hot and undeniably talented but there’s something sort of cold about him. I don’t find him nearly as likable as we all pretended he was during HIMYM’s hayday.

er R113.

He did a nude scene in the Paris Letter. A long, swingy dick was very much in evidence (though the internet has been scrubbed of the pics).

I like him because he seems like a rail-thin, insatiable bottom who can wrap his long legs behind his head when you fuck him, while is long, dangly weiner flops around helplessly.

by Anonymousreply 133May 15, 2018 3:40 PM

Doogie has a wiener, not a weiner.
