In the '70s and early '80s, my neighborhood drugstore used to carry these lurid true-crime magazines that had ads for porn in the back; the occasional gay-porn ad was mixed in with the straight stuff. They also sold Gordon Merrick novels in the paperback section. (This being the Bible Belt, though, I bet the store manager had no idea who the hell Gordon Merrick was.)

There was a smoke shop in downtown Boston nearby where I went to high school in the late '60s/early '70s. The shop had smaller magazines 6"x9" featuring almost naked guys with little loin cloths covering their dicks with the occasional fully naked guy.

I used to go into the shop after school thumbing through the magazines. Looking at the pics, I shot my cum in my underwear without even touching my cock. Had to take the streetcar home with jizz in my pants.

Ads for the Roy Dean photography books in the back of GQ.

And Playgirl magazine, back in the 70s and 80s, when you had to look healthy and have a hairy chest or large bush, or both, to appear in the magazine. Thinking back on it, I don't remember cock size being an issue. Maybe I was looking at the forest, and not the tree.

I'm getting stiff just thinking about it. I'm at Starbucks. This could get interesting.

by Anonymousreply 64April 20, 2014 2:02 PM

In the late 70s, early 80s, there was also "Penthouse." What? Masturbating with "Penthouse?" Absolutely, for this little homo in training, and for two reasons.

First, it was the only mainstream porno rag at the time that would occasionally show naked couples, i.e. if the porn gods were good you might see a guy's back and naked ass, and maybe 2-3 times a year, you might actually see just the hint of a cock!

But the second reason I loved "Penthouse" was because of the forum, which supposedly contained letters from actual readers (but I'm sure had lots of help from porn authors as well). It was here that you would read the posts with the immortal opening line "Dear Penthouse Forum, In all my dreams, I never thought I'd be writing what I'm about to write...." While you would have to skim past the stories of guys doing their sisters-in-law, or guys being seduced by their female college professors, occasionally you would hit gold: the MMF threesome story!

These stories were formulaic, and it was as if the presence of the woman in the room gave the two men some perceived necessary permission to expand their sexual boundaries. Often the stories would be short, but they would be so incredibly exciting to stumble upon.

With the embarrassment of riches of porn available to gai-lings today, I am certain they will not understand what I just described, but those who've been around will recall those days. When you found any story with M/M action at all, those pages had their corners turned down, those issues stayed in a certain drawer, etc. Ah, those few, furtive moments.

by Anonymousreply 65April 20, 2014 2:08 PM

Wrong R64. Now flap your caftan and start another half dozen Golden Girl threads.

by Anonymousreply 66April 20, 2014 2:12 PM

Wrong, R66. I've never had a caftan in my life, nor watched an episode of GG. Well, maybe the one where one of them has a gay son, or sumshitlikethat.

by Anonymousreply 67April 20, 2014 2:21 PM

R65, you are spot on. Often Penthouse was all the was available, and sometimes you would get lucky in the forum letters or pics as you described. Playboy was more ubiquitous, but there was never anything to get lucky about (although I did enjoy the "Little Annie Fanny" comic strip in the back!

For me, After Dark and Playgirl ( Fabian, Jim Brown, Jim Caveretta, George Maharis, the non celeb pictorials etc, etc) were my " objects of desire."

by Anonymousreply 72April 20, 2014 2:34 PM

A friend of mine's father kept a stack of After Darks in a box in an apartment over their garage. When my friend moved into the apartment at age 16, I discovered the ADs during my first sleepover. I hid them a little better so my friend wouldn't find them, and told his father where they were. He (the father) was more interested in me from that point on, but nothing ever happened.

by Anonymousreply 73April 20, 2014 2:36 PM

[quote]He (the father) was more interested in me from that point on, but nothing ever happened.

R73, this is Datalounge! Your story should continue as follows"

The next night, the father cornered me in the garage. His muscular frame leaned over me as his massive hands cupped my young virgin ass....

by Anonymousreply 74April 20, 2014 2:47 PM

If I'd been a little older, it probably would have ended that way, R74, but I was terrified of all my friends finding out.

by Anonymousreply 75April 20, 2014 2:51 PM

Thanks, R68, it was a different world way back then, wasn't it? I was also in "flyover country" growing up, so being a gay teenaged boy often felt like being a soldier cut off behind enemy lines. So, this had the extra benefit of maintaining your "cover," i.e. if anyone you knew bumped into you at the 7-Eleven, you weren't doing anything "nefarious"; instead, you were a healthy, red-blooded American boy buying a pussy magazine.

This might be a topic for a different thread, so OP, if this hijacks your thread tell me, but I was curious if anyone remembers the first time they saw an honest-to-god, gay porno magazine? I was 18 when "Blueboy" first appeared in our town, and I actually felt such a rush inside that looking back on it, I think my heart rate probably jumped about 20 beats per minute. What is this on the cover of this magazine? It's a man! It's a handsome, muscular man! WAIT! Is this? Is this a [italic]gay[/italic] magazine, a magazine for [italic]me[/italic]?

OK, the young ones will definitely be amazed at this, but I couldn't sleep that night! And--I swear this is the truth--I had not even opened the cover and looked inside. Why? I was terrified! Again, in these post-Internet days it's hard to appreciate just how strong the "I am the only person who has these attractions" belief was.

I mean, I was quite intelligent, and I knew on an intellectual level that other gay men existed; however, I had no first hand, real world knowledge of that. I mean, there just had to be others like me who were behind enemy lines, but they were damned good at staying hidden as I could never find them.

But then this "Blueboy" magazine came out! There it was, sitting right beside Playboy and Penthouse as if it had been there all along, and that it was no big deal. And this was in a Waldenbooks (do they even exist anymore?) too, where the little old ladies would buy their "Guideposts" or "Cat Fancy" magazines maybe twenty feet to the left and on the same shelf.

It took me close to a month to work up my nerve and work out my plan to buy myself a copy. It was after I had my driver's license, and could drive to the mall in the next town over (I couldn't risk being ID'd at our own Waldenbooks because my friends and I would kill time there browsing while waiting for a movie to start at the theater connected to the mall). I remember standing in front of the rack well to the left of the porn (in front of the sports magazines...which I had zero interest in!), taking deep breaths, and telling myself I could do this.

I was so convinced that as soon as I placed the magazine on the counter, the clerk would frown at me and launch into some judgmental sermon, or worse yet, get on the public address system and ask for a price check! While flipping through some basketball magazine, my gaze would shoot to the right and downward to make sure I knew right where my prize was. Then back to the magazine in hand. Deep breath. There. Was the line down? Was there anyone waiting? No. Good--time to move--damn!

Some straight guy just moved in and opened a Playboy! Fuck! Deep breaths. Jesus, was that my heartbeat making clicking noises in my throat? Was that my heart thumping so hard in my chest I felt like I was going to die?

OK good, he moved on. No, wait. There's a woman moving to the counter with a stack of books! God damn it. Switch to a baseball magazine. Wait for it, wait for it. There! It's now or never, let's do this. And by God, it was as if I was on autopilot: I had this almost bodily dissociation as I watched myself stride confidently, reach over deftly and pick up my first ever gay male porno mag, and take the four steps it took to get to the counter and gently place it and three one-dollar bills before the clerk.

I did it! Christ, I probably jerked off 100 times to that very first magazine, and 50 of those were probably in the first week! :-) Of course, now I had the "thing that must never ever be found" which led to its own dramas, but that is another story!

There was a lot of gay (and non-gay for that matter) porn before the internet. One wasn't restricted to these choices.

by Anonymousreply 78April 20, 2014 4:01 PM

That was pretty great, R76 and very familiar. I'd guess a lot of people lived through the excitement and anxiety of buying a gay porn mag. I can attest to the same "almost bodily disassociation" when I bought my first copy of Torso. It took weeks to build up to that purchase.

I always imagined that Charles Hix and Ken Haak were lovers, spending their entire lives entertaining beautiful men at an idyllic beach retreat; walking in the sand, playing touch football in the sun, and returning to the seaside cottage for cool drinks, lounging in their underwear, and taking naps in string hammocks.

Once a year in the '70s, Playboy Magazine would do a wrap-up of 'sex in the movies' for that year. While nude women where standard, every once in a while, you'd see a guy's dick. Big turn-on.

On occasion Penthouse Magazine would show a man and woman together and you'd see his dick. Another jack-off opportunity. Then Hustler Magazine blew open the door and semi-regularly featured hetero sex and a guy's hard cock on display.

That was hard copy jacking off as a teen.

He's dead now, R81. But you probably already knew that.

by Anonymousreply 87April 20, 2014 5:32 PM

I remember my first gay mag when I was a young teen. On the cover was a dark-haired young guy lying stomach down on a pool raft, biting into an apple. It was so hot, I wish I could find that mag again. I don't recall if it was "Torso" or "Numbers", or another one, probably around 1980.

by Anonymousreply 88April 20, 2014 6:06 PM

I could stay at the Paperback Booksmiths in Kenmore Square and Copley Square Boston for what seemed indefinitely looking through Mandate, Numbers, Torso, what did I forget, etc.?

I couldn't help myself from jacking off. Those were the days.

Even as a first grader, I knew there was something going on between Batman and Robin. My eyes would always focus on the trunks of their costumes. I got an erotic charge when Batman and Robin would be strapped to a conveyor belt that the would take them to their doom, and I loved to watch them struggle

As a pre-adoloescent, 16 and TigerBeat magazines would have pictures of shirtless pre-teen idols (Bobby Sherman, Desi Arnaz Jr).

When I bought my first copy of Playgirl, I was in a mall bookstore. I also bought Vogue, McCall's and Better Homes and Gardens magazines. I also had a greeting card wishing my sister a speedy recovery.

Any male celebrity with surprise nudity, like the Jim Brown centerfold in Playgirl. Who knew this aggressive football superstar would spread his legs so every vein in his penis and every kinky hair of his bush was visible page after page after page. His whole image was incongruent. I loved it.

Same reaction with Peter Lupus and Christopher George. i watched them on TV and here they were, full frontal, better than what I imagined to see.

I once saw a picture of Tom Jones at the beach, full crop of black hair just above the speedo he was wearing.

Some of the Marlboro men were in Playgirl and in some of the male skin mags. I didn't put two and two together until a couple of years ago, thanks to the internet.

And Ben Murphy in Viva, before he was Alias Smith or Jones.

Fuck, I now have a hard on in Barnes & Noble....

by Anonymousreply 109April 22, 2014 1:35 AM

When a movie would pop up with male nudity on HBO (MANDINGO, RICH AND FAMOUS, PERSONAL BEST), I used to take the HBO guide (remember those?), find out each time they aired and figure out about what time the nude scene would actually be aired. I jotted it all down in a notebook. It was like a jacking off schedule.

Anyone else recall a film released in 1970 entitled "What Do You Say to a Naked Lady?", produced by Allen "Candid Camera" Funt? There was a segment with a naked guy posing for an art class, with the focus on his schlong making the women in the class giddy. It was the first time I had seen full frontal on the screen, the film was rated "X", I had to prove that I was 18 to get in.

Bravo r109! I've been pushing for years to give Jim Brown his due. Granted Jim Palmer is breathtakingly gorgeous (maybe still is), it's all or nothing contrasting him with Jim Brown. I think Jim Brown did more for humanity than Mother Teresa.

I'm sure you think a hairless twink like Bieber is hardon material.

Palmer wasn't pretty but something about the mega hairy chest just reminded you of that hot DILF type. Also, when porn wasn't a touch away (pun intended), one worked with what one had at their disposal.

You're so, so wrong. The very hot Jack Scalia was gracing magazines and subway and bus cards everywhere at that very same time. He was hot.

And yes, R124, Scott Madsen was jerkoffable-to.

by Anonymousreply 126April 23, 2014 2:23 AM

I watched the syndicated Bobby Goldsboro Show back in the 70s. I thought he was SO hot. He unbuttoned his shirts halfway down. When he talked to a guest, he did it while facing the guest. I strained to find his nipple in the opening of his shirt the camera was directed to. I think I saw it several times. I laid on my stomach watching the show; pressing my cock against the floor. I came in my jeans every single time.

Definitely gym class in high school in the 80s, when guys still got naked and showered together, and walked around wearing briefs or jockstraps or nothing, all without the slightest whiff of embarassment.

by Anonymousreply 129April 24, 2014 4:08 PM

Indeed, R129. Or one Saturday a month going to the "Open Swim" night at the YMCA. It was great: swim for awhile, get bleary eyes and wrinkled fingers, then go into the locker room, and pretend to be getting something from your duffel bag, casually chatting up the naked and disrobing men as they arrived. Then going back out to swim some more. Rinse, repeat.

I stored up lots of visual porn to recall later on many occasions.

by Anonymousreply 130April 24, 2014 4:35 PM

Please Sir, I want some more!

by Anonymousreply 131April 24, 2014 6:35 PM

R129 .... different times, I guess. When we were done showering and changing, we had to wait in the main area of the locker room (where there were just benches, no lockers) for the dismissal bell to ring so we could go to our next class. Often our gym teacher would be showering in the private shower in his office ... with the office door open ... and he's exit the shower naked as the day he was born.

And yes, he was HOT .........Good times.

I jacked off thinking about actors on TV shows (mid 60s to early 70s.) My first grade gym teacher stripped nude to show us how to place our clothes in the lockers. He was a gorgeous guy with an unexpected huge dark bush. I had never seen anything like it. Since that moment, pubes have remained a fetish. So, when I thought about these actors, I would imagine what their bushes looked like.

Alejandro Rey, Andy Williams, Bill Bixby, Bob Eubanks, Bobby Sherman, Brian Keith, Brian Kelly, Burt Ward, Chad Everett, Clifton Davis, Dack Rambo, David Birney, David Groh, David Soul, Davy Jones, Demond Wilson, Dick Gautier, Don Grady, Ed Ames, Frank Sutton, Henry Winkler, James Brolin, James Franciscus, John Amos, Kent McCord, Larry Hovis, Lee Majors, Max Baer, Max Gail, Michael Ontkean, Randolph Mantooth, Robert Blake, Robert Brown, Tom Jones, Tommy Smothers, Tony Orlando

Yes, I alphabetized after I brainstorm. It was a great storm. Only later did I see the Playgirl pictures of Peter Lupus. If I watched “Mission Impossible”, he probably would have made the list, and I would have shot a load all the way to Burbank.

I used to clip pictures out of the newspaper of the US Swim team from the 1984 Olympics. They would all be wearing their speedos, cheering their teammates on in the relays. My favorite was Steve Lundquist. I still remember reading a bio on him that disclosed his nickname was "Lunk", which made him even hotter.

Then I swiped my first Playgirl in 1985, which took things to a whole new level. The centerfold was a guy named Michael Mitrano, from a suburb of Boston, I think Woburn. He was a hairdresser and his family owned beauty salons, and he had a gloriously hairy chest.

R155 i hear you about wagon train and robert horton! i find/found him so so sexy! his cute mixed with masculine handsomeness, that wavy full head of hair, his smile, his voice, his confident mannerisms and walk and his lightly hairy tight lean body! yummy he was!

many a episode of wagon train i have recorded when they were showing it on encore western in the past couple of years. and yes, i think i have any and all scenes of him shirtless or nearly shirtless and captured/tied up anything and everything homoerotic and whack worthy. if only they had clint walker and him on the same western! and they were always shirtless, getting captured and put in homoerotic kinky situations/traps! oh lordy! smoke would be coming out of the tv! lol!

i always thought robert horton would have done quite nicely in the wild wild west if conrad had never been cast! seeing horton in those blatant campy skintight outfits and his sexy swagger would have been something to see! damn, now my imagination is going crazy! lol! imagine clint walker in the james west role? and in the skintight outfits (could they find the size?!) or imagine horton or walker as batman and filling out the leotard and being with twink robin in episode after episode of utter campy homoerotic kink!

by Anonymousreply 165May 31, 2015 5:30 PM

My main things were simply the men in straight porn. Hustler or even Penthouse always did layouts of guys fucking women and I'd jack of to their dicks and bodies. Plus, there were a few gay ads in the back of Hustler and some other straight mags for some reason. So, it wasn't that hard to find naked guys. My sister worked at a convenience store and she's wring up the porn for me -- good sister.

Also, just random pics of guys - Mike Tyson shirtless in Life Magazine (lol), random pictures or videos of athletes - maybe shirtless, but if not I could undress them with my imagination.

I taped (yes, old days of the VCR) a made for tv movie "For Ladies Only" with Gregory Harrison as a stripper. Must have watched it 50 times.

Back in the late 70's there were a bunch of "Battle of the Network Stars" specials. ALL the guys wore speedos. Wet & in a speedo some of them caused me to have to leave the room before the end of the show.

Oh, and the Undergear & International Male catalogs were like manna from heaven.

I found my older brother's "club international" magazine - and was SO happy there were guys in there. I jerked off to those same guys probably 100+ times over several years. My brother was in college, so I just kept it...and when he came home they were just missing...

I even found his penthouse forum - and there was a gay chapter. I practically still have the stories memorized to this day.

In 3rd grade, me and my friends found porn in the basement VCR at my house (probably my brother's - again)...and we really had no idea wtf we were seeing. When the guy came I was like - where is that lotion coming from? Why is it coming out of there? He kept sticking his dick in her and pulling it out over and over as he was cumming - so I actually thought the vagina had some kind of lotion dispenser like we had on our sinks... these things just didn't make sense to an 8 year old.

[R169] I would also like to add that I memorized the titles of all the scrambled porns I liked, so that when I was old enough I could hunt them down. And I did. Most are actually on porn.com.

Also, Time Warner Cable in Queens in the early 90s used to make The Arabic Channel and the Playboy Channel both share channel 62. The Arabic Channel was unscrambled, and would switch to the Playboy Channel at 7:00pm on the dot. The scramble was supposed to kick in at 7:00pm as well, but it started to drift to 7:01, and a little bit more every day. I'm sure that somewhere in my mother's apartment there is a VHS tape in a box that has a compilation of trailers for that month's porn programming and phone sex commercials. You could see a lot of previews once the scramble drifted to 7:05. Eventually, they reset it back to 7:00. But who cares? I got what I needed.

This was really kind of a stupid subject for an article. The internet didn't really change what we jacked off to, it just made it more easily accessible. And of course there's more of it. For me, the big change was home video. Before Beta/VHS in the late '70s/early '80s the only way to see anything other than still pictures of porn, nudity, etc., was in an adult movie theater or on 8mm porn films you could watch at home. And believe me, used both of those outlets frequently. (I still have some 8mm loops and a projector, although I haven't seen them in years.

The other big change was when hardcore became legal and more prevalent in the '70s.

My sister's copy; the pages with sex scenes were quite worn:

Until I turned 18 it was fantasies about the guys I saw in the school showers and occasionally some of the guys I saw on TV.

I used to steal Playgirl mags. I couldn't believe these guys were sitting there showing everything!

In the late 60s/early 70s I was happy to find a cache of Esquire magazines our high school library kept hidden in a room off the main reading room. It was a small room they kept certain library supplies in and it had some shelf units with magazines and other periodicals they didn't put out for general viewing. There was a desk and chair in the room and I would make a bee line for it every day during my 1 hour library break so I could sit and peruse the Esquires. I'm apparently the only student who ever ventured into that room. None of the library staff ever bothered me. They had tons of articles on male celebrities and more often than not they were dressed in nice form fitting attire. They also had articles on male fitness and those articles usually had men in swimwear. The back pages had advertisements for, shall we say, somewhat more adult oriented venues. The ads themselves were written in such a way as to make young male minds wander in hormonal excitement thinking about all the sexy goings on out in the world being kept hidden from us. And yes, I would tear out the pages that had photos of men who caused a rise in my Levis for, uh, well, later viewing in complete privacy.

When I was in high school, I would check out bound copies of a British magazine on cinema. It always showed dick.

What I saw in my high school locker room. And then all of the undressed guys in my all-male college dorm.

One of the first signs of summer every year was seeing hot guys shirtless, and even better, in shorts shirtless. Used to be a lot of them walking down the streets, or on constructions sites. Seems now that they mostly wear T Shirts due to insurance regulations.

R224 You're likely thinking of Films and Filming. I too used to visit my local library to feast on the visuals.

This ad; it was in the Playbill for Elizabeth Taylor in “The Little Foxes.” I went to NYC, to see the play in 1981. I just graduated from high school and I love Elizabeth Taylor.

I kept the Playbill, of course, but was very careful. I didn’t want to ruin it with cum splotches, all over that hot CK model.

A female cousin was boarding with my family for a brief time. When she was away I snuck into her bedroom and discovered her collection of Falconhurst pulp fiction books by Kyle Onstott. No pictures of course but vivid prose.

The Chicago International Film Festival program was always shot by famed photographer Victor Skrebneski and always featured male and female models with little or no clothing, including Dolph Lundgren and Steve Lyons.

When I was in junior high, my neighborhood library had a copy of [italic]Men in Love: Men's Sexual Fantasies[/italic] by Nancy Friday. I didn't have the nerve to check it out, but I did discreetly read the gay chapter one afternoon. I also found [italic]The Spada Report,[/italic] the gay version of [italic]The Hite Report,[/italic] at the local B. Dalton bookstore, and I learned that fisting was a thing.

Oh, the memories…

I worked in one of the Olympic villages at the 1984 games, and my office had a glass wall overlooking the gymnastics warm-up room. Oh…

I’m surprised no one has mentioned The Advocate -and it’s hot ads at the back of the magazine. Personals and rent men. Hot, masculine guys. Remember post office boxes?

In the late 80s I wrote sex stories for First Hand and Mandate to make ends meet. $25-$50 a story was good money for the brief work involved. Some I made up from my fantasies -others were based on real people and situations.

Reading The Front Runner and a few Gordon Merrick novels.

Pete Sampras’ “Got Milk?” ad.

I used the normal gay magazines (Inches, Torso, Honcho, Playguy, Blueboy) but my favorite one was Stroke Magazine. Stroke wasn't just nude photos. It featured stills from gay porn films. I then graduated to VHS tapes back in the eighties.

I used to wank off to the Aggie football Team in THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS .

by Anonymousreply 235March 20, 2020 5:27 AM

Damn -One of those film Aggies is a friend of mine (and I've wanked off to him too...).

Back in the 90s one Italian designer brand if I recall correctly produced these beautifully photographed but Intentionally overexposed ads of men’s jeans models. Young, hot, ripped guys shirtless and barefoot, clad only in tight jeans with the fly completely unzipped and a full thick black bush spewing out.

It caused controversy at least the time and a great discussion about when male body hair becomes genital pubic hair and thus becomes “unacceptable”.

Both the photos of pubes spilling out of unbuttoned jeans and the discussion of male pubic hair made me incredibly horny so, yes, I jacked to it. Don’t judge.

Only on DataLounge could I admit this: 7:30pm every night I had to be in front of the television set so I could watch The Newlywed Game and jack-off to Bob Eubanks. The thing that really did it for me was the expression on his face whenever he'd ask a question using the word "Whoopie".

Lol @R171!! “Where is all this lotion coming from?”

by Anonymousreply 239March 20, 2020 7:39 AM

R212 - were they together?

R206 I was exactly the same with dad's underwear. I've never told a living soul about that, not even therapists. But I suspect it's far wider spread that we might think.

First picture that turned me on when I was a gayling was a naked Burt Reynolds in Cosmopolitan. Then, first gay porn videos I watched were “The Back Door” and “Hot Truckin” Favorite porn magazine was “Stroke”

The Joy of Gay Sex opened doors to me that I didn’t even know existed.
