Gimme a fucking break. Church attendance is at record lows, donations are way down, clergy need to be imported. Most Catholics are Catholics in the sense that they were baptized, and then every few years went through a song-and-dance sacrament of one kind or another. Even "Catholic school" is only a marginally different experience from public school, that experience being that addition of "religion class", which is just memorize and regurgitate like any other subject.

The idea that we're living under the Church's thumb, and/or that our actions and emotions are controlled by official Church teaching... is really fucking ridiculous.

Agree with R53. I've lived in Ireland all my life, and Catholic guilt and shame around sexuality is still a big deal here. It's not like Russia obviously, but Ireland is still a conservative, moralistic island that until very recently lived in the political grip of the Catholic Church, and it still casts a shadow over everything. Abortion and gay marriage are illegal, divorce is a recent phenomena that's still quite difficult and frowned upon. Feminist, reproductive and LGBT rights issues are largely the concern of a small bunch of liberal university types, and there is a clear gulf between "academic" and mainstream social thinking. I wish it weren't the case.
