The BEST "kids" movie of the 80s. Labyrinth comes close, but only finishes second due to all of that obnoxious singing.
The NeverEnding Story

I loved The Neverending Story. Still do.

I've never seen the movie but give it points for having a Giorgio Moroder written theme song sung by gay chanteuse Limahl.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | February 24, 2014 11:11 PM |
This was when I fell in love with Limahl. I went out immediately and bought the cassette tape.
Years later I worked for him briefly.

Neverending story was good but I'll always love Labyrinth for David Bowie. My favorite from that era though is Batteries Not Included.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | February 24, 2014 11:24 PM |
Labyrinth was just annoying. Goonies was where its at. Never Ending Story was a close second.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | February 24, 2014 11:28 PM |
Only Labryrinth featured Bowie's pendulous sizemeat.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | February 24, 2014 11:31 PM |
I grew up LOVING TNES. The sequel paled in comparison, but benefited from having hottie John Wesley Shipp as the new dad.

Was that bearded bald hippy photo posted awhile back really Barrett Oliver?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | February 25, 2014 5:29 AM |
I did love NES, but The Goonies is number one for me.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | February 25, 2014 5:40 AM |
They killed the horse in NES.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | February 25, 2014 6:10 AM |
Most traumatic scene in film history, R10.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | February 25, 2014 6:23 AM |
I couldn't watch it as a kid. Falcor scared the shit out of me.
I would be interested in seeing a remake, though. Not sure if they could get the whole book into one movie though, or do three movies again.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | February 25, 2014 7:06 AM |
They would ruin it with CGI.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | February 25, 2014 1:10 PM |
Love it.
However, if you didn't see it as a kid, NES is apparently pretty difficult to appreciate. I've shown it to adults who missed out on seeing it while growing up, and across the board they find it bizarre or don't understand the appeal.
That's probably the case with most children's media, though...

Seeing these comments makes me want to watch the movie again. Wasn't there a princess or empress who was locked up in a tower or something?
by Anonymous | reply 15 | February 25, 2014 2:25 PM |
The Childlike Empress.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | February 25, 2014 2:28 PM |
R14, had the same experience with my dad.
I had to explain to him that the movie was about imagination and getting kids to read, and how books are the "never ending story"...
Seriously, a lightbulb went on and he sorta 'got it' and said "oh, in that case I guess it was a pretty good movie."
Seriously? My dad is intelligent and never misses subtext in movies, but how the hell did he miss something so obvious?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | February 25, 2014 5:18 PM |
Okay, what is the mother's name? I've listened many times but can never make it out, and I haven't read the books.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | February 25, 2014 5:22 PM |
Thank you, R16. It has been a while since I've seen the movie and I've forgotten some of the details. The Childlike Empress fascinated me when I first saw this.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | February 25, 2014 5:55 PM |
The name he calls out is Narafbcdya.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | February 25, 2014 7:05 PM |
Whilst good, Goonies was the film for me.

Why yes, it is.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | February 25, 2014 7:18 PM |
Well, he's fared better than the first Bastian, anyway.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | February 25, 2014 7:21 PM |
[quote]Well, he's fared better than the first Bastian, anyway.
He is the first Bastian. Johnathan Brandis was Bastian in the first sequel. He committed suicide some years ago.

What was the name of the giant flying dragon/dog thing?
by Anonymous | reply 25 | February 25, 2014 8:39 PM |
Falcor
by Anonymous | reply 26 | February 25, 2014 9:30 PM |
Ah, thank you, R26. That was the thing that someone earlier in the thread mentioned being freaked out by. It was kind of freakish, even compared to some of the other creatures in the movie.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | February 25, 2014 11:45 PM |
Gmork, the black wolf beast with the glowing green eyes, always scared me shitless.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | February 25, 2014 11:47 PM |
Has anyone ever seen Noah Hathaway in a movie called to " To Die, To Sleep"? He plays a rich who hooks up with a drifter - very homoerotic. Larry Gatlin - the country singer - is in it.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | February 25, 2014 11:57 PM |
Noah Hathaway (Atreyu) played Harry Potter in Troll.
He's kind of hot in a trashy way now.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | February 26, 2014 12:54 AM |
The Goonies was better than NES.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | February 26, 2014 1:00 AM |
No, they really killed the horse
by Anonymous | reply 32 | February 26, 2014 1:55 AM |
R30, I can't believe there is another living soul out there who has seen Troll, let alone remembers that Atreyu was in it! So were Sonny Bono and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. My sibs and I were absolutely fascinated by that movie when we were kids.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | February 26, 2014 1:58 AM |
R32, no they didn't.
But Noah Hathaway almost died filming that scene.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | February 26, 2014 2:55 AM |
This film was redubbed into English, right?
Such a weird movie. It was definitely not an American production. Very depressing.

[quote]Whilst good, Goonies was the film for me.
Gross. 80s were horrible.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | February 26, 2014 4:31 AM |
He looks like a rabbi.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | February 26, 2014 4:31 AM |
R36, no. Its not dubbed.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | February 26, 2014 4:44 AM |
It was a German production. The special effects were amazing for the time. Every time there's a really bad storm or something, I think it's The Nothing coming to sweep us all away.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | February 26, 2014 4:49 AM |
Noah Hathaway in NES was my first crush as a kid.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | February 26, 2014 5:58 AM |
Some of the film was dubbed from German to English.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | February 26, 2014 7:32 AM |
[quote]This was when I fell in love with Limahl.
Me too, R3. Still watch the music video on occasion and swoon.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | February 26, 2014 7:01 PM |
The mother's/empress' name was 'Moonchild', btw.

The worst case of false advertising.
