Elizabeth Hartman

She was an actress who starred in movies like A Patch of Blue, You're a Big Boy Now, The Group, The Beguiled, and Walking Tall. She was really talented but had psychological problems and killed herself by jumping out of a window

Is anyone here a fan?

by Anonymousreply 29February 17, 2018 4:53 PM

I thought she was quite talented. She had this very fragile quality about her. Pauline Kael really praised her in "Walking Tall." I've seen several of her movies and she was good in all of time. Such a shame she ended up a suicide. Another one of Hollywood's tragedies.

Patch of Blue, The Group, and The Beguiled are three of my favorite movies and she was great in all of the. So sad that whatever demons she had got the best of her.

I love her in Patch of Blue.
Miss Hartman enjoyed sudden success as a film actress following her 'Patch' role and Academy Award nomination, but her career declined in succeeding years.
'That initial success beat me down,' Miss Hartman, a tense, fragile-looking redhead, said in a 1969 interview. 'It spiraled me into a position where I didn't belong. I was not ready for that. I suddenly found myself failing.'

A lot of stars insist that they are really shy and hate being in the spotlight...while doing anything they can to remain in the spotlight.

She was one of those stars who are genuinely shy and truly had trouble adjusting to the fame/attention

Patch of Blue is probably one of the first "real" movies I saw a young child. I was maybe 10 or 11 and it truly did have an affect on me. Both their performances, (Elizabeth's and Shelly Winters) are mesmorizing. To this day it is a go to sort of movie to make me appreciatte the life I was lucky enough to be able to have.

I pass the building she leapt from all the time. I used to have friends who lived there also. Fine old building...

EH was great in an episode of Rod Serling's Night Gallery. The teleplay was called The Dark Boy. It's funny how Hartman's acting elevates the piece. Her underrated talents really shine in a ghost story from a bygone era.

She was also great in the Clint Eastwood film called The Beguiled. The film is almost a cautionary tale about the relationship between men and women. It was almost like something out of Night Gallery or Twilight Zone. In the film, she becomes Eastwood's love interest with a particularly sad ending for her. Her performance was really sublime in that one.

Looks wise she reminded me a bit of Romy Schneider though she was not as beautiful.

Patch of Blue was one of my first 'grown up' movies to see, too. I was probably 10 or 11 and my mom made me watch it with her one night on TV. We cried and cried.

She was not surprised when I came out.

When one moves from Hollywood to Pittsburgh there are bound to be tears.

Good actress. It was tragic when she died. Had so much potential

by Anonymousreply 11February 13, 2014 6:20 PM

She should have joined Delores Hart instead.

^ And become a nun?!

by Anonymousreply 13February 13, 2014 8:20 PM

She was mousy in THE GROUP, pathetic, neglected and undernourished as the blind girl in A PATCH OF BLUE. In YOU'RE A BIG BOY NOW she was so sexy as the 60's swinger.

by Anonymousreply 14February 13, 2014 9:04 PM

Mental illness. Couldn't return to acting even if she'd wanted.

Wish she'd won BA for APOB. An indelible performance in a role she was born to play. She lost to Julie Christie ("Darling") an actress who's never resonated with me.
She was mousy in THE GROUP

Is that why Don Bluth cast her as the voice of Mrs. Frisby in [italic]The Secret of NIMH[/italic]?

R23 Not in my country, Germany. UK Import is the cheapest way. It wasn't even released on DVD in my country.

Back when IMDb had their message boards I wrote a comment that Elizabeth's daughter responded to.

by Anonymousreply 26December 26, 2017 2:00 PM

Same here R6. We must be around the same age.
