Racism in Hollywood

Who do you think is racist in Hollywood?

Or if you a story about a celeb, director, etc share!

For some reason, Reese Witherspoon reeks racism

by Anonymousreply 94December 12, 2019 3:49 PM

The whole system is racist--haven't you noticed?

Black people are consigned to playing thugs, maids, or slaves--Asians are smiling, silent jokes or duplicitous villains, and Hispanics are noticeably absent.

And not only racism--how about sexism?

Hollywood has treated women like dirt forever.

If you've noticed, movies don't reflect reality one bit.

Lots of those powerful old Jews are banging the black Brillo but would die before they'd admit it.

by Anonymousreply 3February 9, 2014 9:30 PM

Let's put it this way: Paul Mooney is a far superior talent over Woody Allen, and while Paul is quite accomplished in the industry he does not have Allen's status. Why?

Because Paul Mooney does not resemble the film executives, and Allen does. Mooney is handsome, manly, and BLACK. He isn't nasty, either.

So yes, there are many examples of racism and sexism in Hollywood that we can prove with evidence.

by Anonymousreply 4February 9, 2014 9:33 PM

Salma Hayek was nixed for a part in I think Armageddon - one of those disaster flicks- because the thinking of the studio, the head of casting told her management, was that audiences wouldn't accept "a Mexican in space".

Still, she's weeping on billionnaire hubby François-Henri Pinault's shoulder about that I'm sure.

by Anonymousreply 5February 9, 2014 9:36 PM

These executives who pull out of the studios and see latinos on the street, working in the restaurants, and go home to latino housecleaners and maids never manage to put a latino person in any good roles in the films they produce.

It's as if they are being willfully ignorant of society, or maybe they just see latinos are not fully human.

by Anonymousreply 6February 9, 2014 9:51 PM

Of course it's racist. How many leading men and women are white and how many are of other races? Hollywood is also very homophobic as well all know. There's not one A-list openly gay actor.

by Anonymousreply 7February 9, 2014 9:54 PM

OP look at the shock and awe about this year's "Vanity Fair" cover where the minority actors are actually on the cover and not in the hidden gatefold. The very fact that this is something exciting and long-awaited in 2014 shows how backwards Hollywood truly is.

by Anonymousreply 8February 9, 2014 9:59 PM

[quote]Does anyone seriously think Crash deserved the Oscar over Brokeback Mountain?

Yes, without a doubt.

Brokeback was the first in your face gay movie for mainstream America. That doesn't mean it should have won best pic.

A friend of mine worked on the set of "The Fugitive" as a caterer and said Tommy Lee Jones was a prick and a bigot.

by Anonymousreply 10February 9, 2014 10:07 PM

Samuel L. Jackson

by Anonymousreply 11February 9, 2014 10:10 PM

Tyler perry

Spike Lee

by Anonymousreply 12February 9, 2014 10:11 PM

R11, that's pretty ironic since the character he portrayed was the antithesis of that. The standout scene in "The Fugitive" was when the Tommy Lee diverse FBI agents enter the territory of the rural WASP policemen looking for the Harrison Ford character.

by Anonymousreply 13February 9, 2014 10:13 PM

And why is Hollywood still hating on Italians?

Scorsese is a travesty, a sell-out, and a pig for propagating those old, stale Italian-American stereotypes.

Most Italian-Americans are not, were not, and will never be in the Mafia. What. the. fuck.

Hey "Marty," how about making a film about honest, brilliant, and selfless Italians?

What about all of the great Italian artists throughout history?? And scientists?

Martin Scorsese you are a shame and an embarrassment.

by Anonymousreply 14February 9, 2014 10:16 PM

OP, so you're actually saying people like Reese Witherspoon don't even have to be guilty of saying or doing anything racist... just the fact that they're white and that they look like they [italic]might[/italic] be racist, that's more than enough for you to conclude they "reek of racism."

by Anonymousreply 15February 9, 2014 10:17 PM

[quote]Hey "Marty," how about making a film about honest, brilliant, and selfless Italians?

So you are into science fiction?

by Anonymousreply 16February 9, 2014 10:21 PM

Tommy Lee has a reputation for being a total asshole, miserable grumpy old shit but I doubt seriously he is a racist.

There's a stereotype that anybody from the South must be a racist (Jones, Witherspoon) whereas people who grew up in the South know a lot more African-Americans than people who grew up in the North ever did.

Who was the President who did the most for African-Americans? Good ole boy LBJ.

by Anonymousreply 17February 9, 2014 10:22 PM

All you fake-ass, nasty-attitude -having, black bitches need to shut the fuck up. Fake ass, Masonic Negroes.

by Anonymousreply 18February 9, 2014 10:31 PM

Some of the most offensive images put to my mind was how Martin Scorsese portrayed the Irish immigrant women, one of whom was played by Cameron Diaz, in his movie Gangs of New York.

What a shameful man you are, "Marty."

by Anonymousreply 19February 9, 2014 10:33 PM

R13 Spike Lee and Tyler Perry are both people who have always made their own movies; they didn't get help from Hollywood. Nice try though.

by Anonymousreply 20February 9, 2014 10:39 PM

There's racism in every walk of life, so of course Hollywood is included. What really pisses me off is white males saying they don't approve of a "quota system." Yeah, why would you like a quota system? It will take away your automatic "white male privilege" in some instances.

by Anonymousreply 21February 9, 2014 10:39 PM

R25, right. Completely independent.

by Anonymousreply 22February 9, 2014 10:43 PM

If "Hollywood" means the movies, video, television, etc then I call BS on this entire thread. I worked in the industry.

The top level managers are only concerned on what sells and what will make the biggest profit. They have no cause except the almighty dollar.

The actors like Witherspoon, Tommy Lee, Cruise and Travolta have no say in what goes on the big screen (or the little screen) unless they have big bucks to risk making a flop.

Nobody puts up 200 million to throw down the toilet for a good cause.

by Anonymousreply 23February 9, 2014 10:48 PM

Excuse me, Tyler Perry is working with Oprah. She IS the establishment, check her bank account lately

by Anonymousreply 24February 9, 2014 10:50 PM

Can you imagine a black actress having a career like Jennifer Aniston's? Or Kate Hudson's? Still getting to pretend they're movie stars even though that ship has long since sailed? Making pictures that don't draw flies?

Shit, Whitney Houston's three motion pictures in the nineties all were hits, yet you never hear about how successful she was in the industry. But we're constantly being told how Julia Roberts "owned" the nineties, even though she couldn't even get arrested at the box office for about five of those ten years.

Look at Beyoncé, who actually carried a hit movie on her own name. How many white actresses around today can claim that?

Alfre Woodard kept it real when she said to watch and compare Lupita and Jennifer Lawrence's career trajectories. A shame because Lupita is a Yale acting graduate who produces her own documentaries in her spare time. There's brilliance there that doesn't deserve to be relegated to a supporting role on a network crime drama.

by Anonymousreply 25February 9, 2014 11:00 PM

R28

The case of Lupita's popularity shows that it is possible to get mainstream America behind the idea that black people can become popular movie stars. Nobody can tell me now that a movie with her in the lead in a nondescript racial role will not have the potential to become a huge blockbuster. But if you perpetuating an image of black people in movies as criminals, slaves, maids you are pushing the racism button in a manipulative way.

by Anonymousreply 26February 9, 2014 11:05 PM

R32 It's too early to tell with Lupita. But I could definitely see the well worn excuse of her being "too black" as a hindrance.

R29 If Oprah were the establishment, she would have received that supporting actress nomination for The Butler, without a doubt. That was a deliberate, intentional snub. Can you think of a white actor/actress who went from being the projected winner to not even being nominated for the award?

by Anonymousreply 27February 9, 2014 11:11 PM

I doubt that

[quote]well worn excuse of her being "too black"[quote]

will come from audiences but rather from HW execs.

Oprah has overstated her welcome. I doubt her skin color was the reason she became a household name and her skin color is also not the reason her popularity is fading fast.

by Anonymousreply 28February 9, 2014 11:23 PM

[quote]If Jews control Hollywood, why aren't there more movies about Jews? Scientologists are the ones running the show.

If Scientologists are the ones running the show, why aren't there more movies about Scientology? Both Jews and Scientologists know what sells, and those ain't movies about Jews or Scientologists. Racism, sexism, and homophobia in Hollywood reflects the racism, sexism, and homophobia of the movie market, which isn't limited to the United States, by the way.

by Anonymousreply 29February 10, 2014 12:05 AM

Lots of big HW players are also gay, that doesn't mean a lot of movies deal with gay life.

What most of HW big players (jews, scientologists or gays) like is MONEY. Beyond that I doubt there is much ideology going on.

by Anonymousreply 30February 10, 2014 12:29 AM

How did you krauts, micks, chavs, and other ethnicities let Jews, who are supposed to be only 1% of the population, become so powerful in the Hollywood, and the world in general? Were you all so focused on Blacks? Or what? I'd like to know.

by Anonymousreply 31February 11, 2014 4:36 AM

Julianne Moore, seriously

(and I can't believe it took this long for someone to say it)

by Anonymousreply 32February 11, 2014 4:42 AM

Are niche black exploitation films, that were popular in the 70s for tapping into the black market, still churned out? We hear about the huge market for cheap asian films but never about the black or latino market. Or has Hollywood ignored it for doing mindless CGI comic films that appeal to the bigger China and world youth markets?

by Anonymousreply 33February 11, 2014 4:42 AM

This is the kind of shit that has destryed Datalounge.

The worst racists are black. This shit thread is proof.

by Anonymousreply 34February 11, 2014 4:51 AM

Rupert Everett, MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING

I have no use for REESE after the whole cop incident:

"DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM BECAUSE YOU'RE ABOUT TO FIND OUT ? ?"

by Anonymousreply 36February 11, 2014 5:13 AM

"Are niche black exploitation films, that were popular in the 70s for tapping into the black market, still churned out?"

No, unless you count Tyler Perry. I actually read an analysis of why Blaxploitation movies stopped back in the nineties, and one of the factors was that there were a lot more movie theaters in black neighborhoods in the seventies.

Plus Hollywood is still run by straight white men, who like to make movies for other straight white men.

by Anonymousreply 37February 11, 2014 5:17 AM

Even back in HOLLYWOOD'S heyday the jewish moguls distanced themselves from appearing jewish, or too jewish let's say. MAYER, COHN, LANSKY, GOLDWYN, WARNER, the MIRISCHES, WASSERMANS, they all knew the game and catered to mainstream America !

by Anonymousreply 38February 12, 2014 8:35 PM

Not another word until ASIANS are in the NFL !!

by Anonymousreply 39February 13, 2014 9:07 PM

R40 Is right.

R31, some stats to ponder: US: 70% white, 13% black. This is why Jennifer Aniston has the career she does, and why Jennifer Lawrence's career trajectory will eclipse Lupita's. People like to see "themselves" on the screen, regardless of whether or not you can swallow that fact.

Add to that the fact that foreign movie audiences in Europe,Latin America, The Mid East & esp Asia, love white blonde Western women.

It's called "appealing to your target market".

by Anonymousreply 40February 13, 2014 10:19 PM

Eva Longoria is very hateful towards non-Hispanic whites. She plays nice with many celebs to get by, but at the end of the day she is pretty much a brown skin supremacist.

by Anonymousreply 41February 13, 2014 10:33 PM

R47: I've heard that about her too. But that's OK, she's just a Texas "rancherita" at heart & will quickly disappear. She has no real talent.

by Anonymousreply 42February 13, 2014 10:37 PM

R4, I sort of agree with you but Mooney manly? Child please lol

by Anonymousreply 43February 13, 2014 10:40 PM

Longoria won't ever really disappear at all from the entertainment industry. She will never have major TV acting project like she had with DH. She is producing right now and she is one of the co-producers of Devious Maids. Another major issue with Eva Longoria, is that she generalizes all U.S. Hispanics as being monolithic. In reality, there are different types of Hispanic groups in the U.S. and many would disagree with Longoria's beliefs and politics. Longoria is a huge supporter of illegal immigrants, but she fails to realize that there are Hispanics whose families have lived in the U.S. for a long time and don't like illegal immigration. Longoria would not get along with someone like Ted Cruz or Marco Rubio. Some of her fellow Texas Hispanics see her as too liberal and there are Hispanics who work as Border Patrol agents.

by Anonymousreply 44February 13, 2014 10:47 PM

R41, Rupert wasn't a projected winner. When MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING came out in the summer of '97, some pundits thought he could get an Oscar nomination, but when AS GOOD AS IT GETS debuted later that year, Greg Kinnear stole his thunder in regards to a gay character being nominated. Kinnear trumped him because a) he was straight playing gay whereas some thought Rupert was just being himself since he's gay in real life, and b) Simon was a tragic figure (which Oscar loves) whereas George was a happy gay.

Also, MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING was more about Julia Roberts' comeback -- after years of box office bombs -- than Rupert's performance although his rendition of "Say a Little Prayer" was often cited as a highlight.

by Anonymousreply 45February 13, 2014 10:57 PM

R51: Couple all you said with the general opinion that Rupert was a nasty, bitchy queen, and that probably helped seal his demise.

Haven't heard much from him since, have we?

by Anonymousreply 46February 13, 2014 11:01 PM

R5 So how come Michael Clarke Duncan got to go to space? And that film had a black USAF 4-star General. I'm guessing Salma was up for Liv Tyler's part, in which case she would have stayed on Earth anyway!

by Anonymousreply 47February 13, 2014 11:04 PM

R15 Correct me if I'm wrong but Scorsese only really made 2 Italian mafia movies, Goodfellas and Casino. The Departed had Irish-American gangsters.

by Anonymousreply 48February 13, 2014 11:11 PM

R26 Because quotas create positive discrimination, people getting selected because they fulfil the quota rather than being the best candidates.

by Anonymousreply 49February 13, 2014 11:18 PM

R53 lol, true

by Anonymousreply 50February 13, 2014 11:19 PM

R1 That's right, you never see black actors playing police officers or soldiers.

by Anonymousreply 51February 13, 2014 11:22 PM

R8 Does Ian McKellen count?

by Anonymousreply 52February 13, 2014 11:27 PM

And what about Angelina Jolie, who is openly bi?

by Anonymousreply 53February 13, 2014 11:29 PM

Jolie jumps everybody who can further her fame.

by Anonymousreply 54February 13, 2014 11:40 PM

How about racism in Bollywood/ Nollywood. Add Hollywood and they have homophobia in common.

by Anonymousreply 55February 13, 2014 11:49 PM

Angelina says she's not bi anymore, now that she has Braaaaaaaaadley.

[quote]Can you think of a white actor/actress who went from being the projected winner to not even being nominated for the award?

Robert Redford for All is Lost. He was definitely projected to win and didn't even get a nomination. Doesn't get much whiter than Redford.

by Anonymousreply 56February 14, 2014 12:19 AM

R60 And how could Jenny Shmizu have done so?

by Anonymousreply 57February 14, 2014 12:33 AM

I live to watch ANGELA BASSETT as a very angry black woman who's been wronged. What originality, what style, what talent !

by Anonymousreply 58February 16, 2014 5:24 AM

Spike Lee is a bigger racist than any white old Jew in Hollywood.

by Anonymousreply 59February 16, 2014 5:34 AM

Pasadena Monthly Magazine recently interviewed Taraji P. Henson about a play in which she's currently starring, and she was asked about being a black actress in Hollywood. TPH was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for 2008's "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button".

February 10, 2014

[bold]MR: Well, I’m sure Taraji would say, welcome to the club! It’s never been easy for actresses to find work, especially black actresses.[/bold]

TPH: Absolutely. [bold]I am an Academy Award-nominated actress. And still I am told, you can’t open a movie. It’s tough. Amy Adams and I rolled together—the year she was nominated for Junebug was the year I sang at the Oscars, and then we were nominated together. But look at our careers, look at what she’s been doing. I can count on one hand how many movies I’ve done. [/bold] People put me down for doing a Tyler Perry movie, but guess what? That’s who called.

What’s so unfortunate is that I have a mandate. [bold]I have people who want to see me in the movies. I’m just not getting the shot. [/bold] I have over four million people on Facebook, however many million on Twitter—people want to see me. [bold]But I can’t do it. There’s that glass ceiling.[/bold] I’m not going to let it make me bitter. I’m not going to let it change the love I have for what I do. And I love Bernie to death, and I want the world to know. Thank you, Bernie, for giving me a voice, for having the balls to change that character to a black woman!

I can't believe a poster fixed their thin, dry ass lips to say that Longoria is a"brown skin supremacist". Do you have any idea how hard it is to get success as a Latina in that business? Does she not rub elbows or kiss enough white ass for you? How dare she be proud of who she is and want to employ those who are unemployable aside from being the help. Whoever you are, die a slow death. You're too stupid to live.

by Anonymousreply 68November 23, 2016 1:33 PM

Taraji is right. This election has white people all in a tizzy, but this is what black Americans have always felt like. America is full of shit when it comes to "inclusion".

by Anonymousreply 69November 23, 2016 1:35 PM

By the way, I most certainly did not go to see Dream Girls because of Beyonce, I went to see Jennifer Hudson, period. It was a great movie but Jennifer and Eddie Murphy made it great. Beyonce was just an after thought.

There is nothing wrong with being proud of who you are. There have been stories of some Latino celebs being racist towards non-Latinos. Best example is Carlos Mencia. Longoria has been successful and good for her, but she isn't a great actress and she is nowhere near as talented as Gina Rodriguez.

by Anonymousreply 72November 23, 2016 1:50 PM

Black men get parts, black women do not. Hallie Berry could have had Jennifer Annistons career, she did not want it...most women don't want to work that hard. How much money has Anniston got in the bank? She is probably a billionaire.

Does anyone here know the reason BET doesn't try to do more original programming or at least go for made for tv movies like Lifetime?

by Anonymousreply 76December 1, 2016 10:32 PM

BET does tons of original programming. Being Mary Jane has been a huge commercial and critical success for them.

by Anonymousreply 77December 1, 2016 10:46 PM

R72, latinos cannot be racist to white people. What do you white people not understand about that? They simply do not like you. And for good reason.

by Anonymousreply 78December 2, 2016 12:43 AM

Despite all the talk about diversity and being inclusive, whites are still the lead in most movies - even when it's totally unnecessary and no name actor in the lead.

by Anonymousreply 79December 12, 2019 5:42 AM

For some reason, I always thought Reuse was a racist. But who can say?

by Anonymousreply 80December 12, 2019 10:12 AM

You're going to find racism everywhere. But, Hollywood racism is just your typical average liberal racism. Well meaning people who don't hate anyone, but are just oblivious to certain things. Or they will go to the other end of the spectrum where they are so "woke" that it becomes obnoxious.

by Anonymousreply 86December 12, 2019 2:11 PM

[quote] How can Hollywood be racist? They remake all the movies now with once-beloved characters now black. All the iconic characters: Spider-Man? Black. James Bond? Black. I’m sorry, but I don’t go to the movies to see Wild Kingdom.

There are two kinds of prejudice: passive and active. Hating people because they're different is the second kind. Using a minority group as props to push a particular point of view is the first kind.
