Carl Betz and Donna Reed. There was no way in a hell a hot piece like Carl Betz was into Donna Reed. No way.
Mismatched TV Couples

OP: He was just on the show to get the lowdown, and the down low, from Bob Crane.

Jay and Gloria on Modern Family.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | February 9, 2014 2:39 PM |
I always thought Ward and June Cleaver were mismatched. He was such a hot daddy and she was as cold as an iceberg.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | February 9, 2014 2:52 PM |
I have recently been watching Leave it to Beaver on Me TV after not seeing it for years. While it is subtle, June is actually funny and there is some chemistry between her and Ward. There is usually at least one scene per episode with her and Ward with some good-natured jabs that show how much they enjoy each other's company. She might have looked and dressed like an ice maiden, but she was a pretty warm character.

Kevin and Scotty on B&S. No way someone as hot as Scotty would ever date fugly Kevin.

Dick and Joanna from NEWHART

No one is that gay OP. Donna Reed was a beautiful woman. They were actually agreat match.

Cody and Bailey on The Suite Life on Deck. Cole Sprouse couldn't play a straight character.
Doug and Carrie on King of Queens.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | February 9, 2014 3:35 PM |
Disagree about Doug and Carrie. I loved their snarkiness with each other.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | February 9, 2014 3:54 PM |
Jim Belushi & Courtney Thorne Smith, on whatever that sad TV show was called that they were on.
Col Nelson & Jeannie. She was tons hotter than he was.
Daphne & Niles on Frazier.
Frazier's Dad & Wendy Malick's character on the last season. She's smoking hot & about 20 yrs younger.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | February 9, 2014 5:41 PM |
Mindy Kaling & Chris Messina's characters on her awful show. He's sooo cute, and she's..not.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | February 9, 2014 5:42 PM |
Yes - I think Doug and Carrie kind of worked. I think partly because they both had some comedic talent and played off of each other well. Carrie was also more than just the pretty wife and had her own comedic flaws, plus, while overweight, Doug was not unattractive and had some charm. Now if this was real life I think they would have ended up divorced. Carrie wanted more career wise etc, and Doug was comfortable just to coast where they were at.
I always thought Tony Nelson was hot, so no problem with him and Jeannie. Now Bewitched... I could see that Sam loved Darin in the early years, and while not classically handsome, he had some charm (before he became more and more a wet blanket). By the time Dick Sargent came along, I would think she would have been ready to pop out of there.
As much as I liked Martin Crane, he and Wendy Malik did not come across as believable. Age and looks probably had something to do with it, but there was just no connection at all. Part of it might have been it was a worn-out show by then. Nothing to do with looks, but Fraiser himself did not click with any of his sweeps stunts love interests except Lilith and Diane. People tend to point to Daphne and Niles bringing the show down at the end, but I think all of the Fraiser hoping this (multi-episode guest star) is the one and then moping for episodes after the break-up helped take the fun out of the show.
Jim Belushi and Courtney Thorne Smith might win this won. Looks aside, the few episodes I saw, his character was just unlikable, annoying and devoid of any charm. How did that show last as long as it did?

Fred and Ethel Mertz. He was old enough to be her father, looked it, and was devoid of any charm, personality, or looks. She, while a bit chubby for the times, could have done SO much better and I always wondered why she settled for Fred. He always mocked her weight, but he himself was fat. And old.

Carl Betz and Donna Reed were perfectly matched, OP.
There was already another thread about them and the conclusion was that Donna gave him what he deserved.

King of Queens and a bunch of CBS sitcom with the fat guy/hot wife combo.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | February 9, 2014 6:32 PM |
For a number of years after Cheers, it seemed like every sitcom was created with the intent that the leads would have a will they or won't they dynamic. This led to a lot of couples, that might have seemed like a physical match on paper to being a bad match on-screen.
About the only thing I remember about Caroline in the City (except for maybe the ass of one of the supporting characters -- yuppie ex-boyfriend?) was the anti-chemistry of Caroline and Richard. Mad-TV did a spoof on it highlighting Lea Thompson less than comic line delivery and more than subtly hinting Caroline was not exactly Richard's type.
Suddenly Susan was far from a comic classic, although in the beginning it was not horrible and could have been a harmless workplace comedy. One thing that did not work was romantic plot with Brooke and her boss Judd Nelson. Way too much time was spent on this non-couple. This is an example of a show that needed some tweaking, but they tweaked it the wrong way and it went from mediocre to bad.
Ross and Rachel worked as the unrequited crush, and maybe as an attempt at a relationship that ended up failing. It was less believable that Rachel was hung up on Ross for the next ten years. On the other hand, I thought the show did a good job of how Monica and Chandler's relationship evolved - allowing them to have ups and downs without going through the clichéd break-ups and reunions that sitcom couples seem to have.

Jay and Gloria are one of my favorite TV couples ever. Not everything is about matching physical attributes.

r4 Completely agree with you.
r7/r14 Miss Reed got even more beautiful as she aged.

The Jay role on Modern Family was originally offered to Craig T. Nelson. I think he'd have been a much better fit for that character and I can believe him landing a hot younger wife way more easily than Ed O'Neil.

Barack & Michelle Obama. She is faaaar too butch for him.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | February 9, 2014 7:03 PM |
R19 to each his own. Ross was my favorite.

Michelle Obama looks like she would cut a bitch if they came near Barry.

Oooo I love this thread! :)
My choice: Grace and Leo on Will & Grace. HCJ is so far out of Deb's league just looks wise not to mention he was a funny, humanitarian doctor. She was a lazy, self-absorbed cunt with no boobs and he pursued her! Never made sense.
Re Jay & Gloria: He's old and ugly and grumpy but very rich and stable. She does not work and had a child (2 now) that he supports. Gloria is getting what she wants out of the deal. Jay is not controlling or restrictive on her spending. He treats her like an equal rather than an employee for the most part. This is not that weird to me. After a long time dating poor but sexy a-holes, Jay is a nice change of pace.
Re Ross and Rachel: Rachel is better looking but an annoying narcissist and dumb as hell. She really just seemed to luck into her job at Ralph Lauren. Ross gave her the attention she needed, put up with her superficiality, and seemed like he was pretty great in bed. Even if he was a bit nerdy he was really rich and smart and successful. I'd date Ross.

R25 Craig T. Nelson wanted more money and Ed took what they were offering. In an E! special Ed said he knew it would be a hit so he was ok taking less money upfront and he would get even when it came to renegotiate contracts.
Plus all the syndication money. If he wasn't set after Married with Children he certainly is now.

Fred and Wilma. Barney and Betty. In both cases, the women could have done MUCH better than those two poor shlubs (one obese, the other short and dumpy)
by Anonymous | reply 26 | February 9, 2014 7:20 PM |
I thought Craig T. Nelson was out.

R28 Barney had a 10 inch cock. That's why Betty couldn't conceive naturally. Barn's big cock dislodged her ovaries.

Ralph and Alice Kramden. What did she see in that fat, loudmouth loser?

[quote] he was really rich
Umm, the world of academia does not generally make rich people. He was certainly successful in his field to land a tenure track position but being an assistant professor in an anthropology department is not rich.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | February 9, 2014 7:27 PM |
Yes, Craig Nelson is a conservative Republican.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | February 9, 2014 7:28 PM |
R32 Yes, but he was making more money as a paleontologist before he went into academia, certainly more than a waitress.
Remember the episode when Joey, Phoebe, and Rachel were complaining that they couldn't afford to go to the concert and other nice places that Ross, Monica, and Chandler could afford?
by Anonymous | reply 32 | February 9, 2014 7:34 PM |
R11 I like Mindy and Danny together. He is better looking but kind of uptight. She is little overweight but funny and warm and caring/nurturing. They balance each other out. The relationship would have more potential to work out than one just based on sex because they get along as friends and seem to care about each other on a deeper level.

Mork and Mindy -- why didn't she ever just slap him?

Meathead and little Gloria on All In The Family. Once she let her hair down and squeezed into those tight jeans, she could have had any man in NY.
He still looked like a nebbish after he cleaned up. Such terrible posture and absolutely no VPL!

I never bought Samantha and Darrin as a couple since I was in kindergarten. Elizabeth Montgomery was way too beautiful for Dick York. Dick Sargent was much more believable, looks-wise.
Ross and Rachel would never happen in real life.

I much prefer Elizabeth Montgomery paired with Dick York over Dick Sargent. Sargent was too uptight for comedy and there was just no spark between the two of them.
Although Suzanne Pleshette and Bob Newhart had great chemistry together on screen, I thought she was way too beautiful for Bob.

You missed the point entirely. Even Endorra brought this up and Sam's response was that being a witch does not give her everything if she can't have Darrin.

[quote] Carrie was also more than just the pretty wife and had her own comedic flaws, plus, while overweight, Doug was not unattractive and had some charm.
Which was pointed out. Carrie was hot but was a total bitch, which meant no man wanted her for more than a few minutes. Doug was a total baby and wuss, and could put up with her. So this made it work.
