Now's Then: Today's Stars and Their Matches

Charlie Sheen is today's Errol Flynn.

Gwyneth Paltrow is today's Joan Crawford.

Susan Boyle is today's Kate Smith.

George Clooney is today's Cary Grant.

Madonna is today's Madonna.

Improve and expand the list, please.

by Anonymousreply 68May 21, 2018 7:55 PM

Go away, White Belt Man.

by Anonymousreply 1January 27, 2014 4:39 PM

The Paltrow-Crawford connection makes no sense. Crawford was an obsessive worker who kept making films, while Paltrow doesn't seem to work very much, and doesn't seem terribly concerned about it.

by Anonymousreply 2January 27, 2014 4:42 PM

I agree r2, Crawford was far more famous and iconic.

by Anonymousreply 3January 27, 2014 4:45 PM

Yep. The cunts have infested every corner of the place.

by Anonymousreply 4January 27, 2014 4:45 PM

Kate Hudson is today's Goldie Hawn.

by Anonymousreply 5January 27, 2014 6:09 PM

by Anonymousreply 6January 27, 2014 6:16 PM

River Phoenix is today's Wallace Reid

by Anonymousreply 7January 27, 2014 6:43 PM

Courteney Love is today's Dorothy Davenport.

Okay, Davenport's a little obscure, deservedly. Ms Love is equally deserving.

by Anonymousreply 8January 27, 2014 6:47 PM

Mads Mikkelsen is today's Basil Rathbone.

by Anonymousreply 9January 27, 2014 6:58 PM

Charlie Sheen never had the good-natured wit that Flynn had.

by Anonymousreply 10January 27, 2014 7:31 PM

[all posts by tedious, racist idiot removed.]

by Anonymousreply 11January 27, 2014 7:40 PM

I was going to say, I doubt people will still be talking about Gwyneth Paltrow decades after her death. People still talk about Joan Crawford for better or worse.

by Anonymousreply 12January 27, 2014 7:49 PM

Diane Keaton is today's Marion Lorne.

by Anonymousreply 13January 27, 2014 7:49 PM

Greta Gerwig is today's Diane Keaton.

by Anonymousreply 14January 27, 2014 8:36 PM

Matt Lauer is Today's hostess with the mostest.

by Anonymousreply 15January 27, 2014 11:20 PM

[quote]Now's Then: Today's Stars and Their Matches

I honestly thought this was going to be a thread about celebrities lighting cigarettes.

by Anonymousreply 16January 27, 2014 11:26 PM

OP, why do you hate Joan Crawford? What did she ever do to you?

by Anonymousreply 17January 27, 2014 11:34 PM

Look, I think Christina was right about Joan, but there is no doubt that she had talent in spades.

And Goop has none.

by Anonymousreply 18January 27, 2014 11:37 PM

Charlie Sheen has never had one-tenth the hotness that was Errol Flynn.

by Anonymousreply 19January 27, 2014 11:56 PM

You are today's moron.

by Anonymousreply 20January 28, 2014 12:00 AM

Madonna is today's Crawford. The same grueling work ethic, huge fan base, increasing loss of touch with reality ruining the bit of talent they did have early on, using the kids for show, fiercel and graceless attitude toward ageing.

It is time for Madonna and Courtney love to do that remake of Baby Jane...

by Anonymousreply 21January 28, 2014 12:52 AM

Madonna is today's Crawford, the aging narcissist who tries to use garish makeup to distract the eye from her bad plastic surgery, and who has lived in a bubble of fame for so long that she's totally lost touch with reality.

R21/22 not to mention they were/are two of the most humorless people to walk the face of the earth.

by Anonymousreply 23January 28, 2014 7:22 AM

Awwww, OP thought he had made a funny.

by Anonymousreply 24January 28, 2014 9:24 AM

Jennifer Lawrence is today's Ellen Page.

(Tried to say this in the Ellen Page thread but it was always Prime time.)

by Anonymousreply 25January 28, 2014 10:03 AM

Tom Hanks is today's Red Buttons

Larry King is today's Ed Sullivan (in his current condition)

by Anonymousreply 26January 28, 2014 10:04 AM

Jennifer Lawrence is the new Ellen Barkin. See American Hustle. Amy Adams is the new Julianne Moore.

by Anonymousreply 27January 28, 2014 10:15 AM

Vanna White is today's Betty Furness.

Okay, Vanna White WAS today's Betty Furness. I'm not sure that there is a current Betty Furness. Lovely Carol Merrill was Betty Furness, briefly.

But Padma Lakshmi is today's Bess Myerson.

by Anonymousreply 28January 28, 2014 1:20 PM

Beyonce : Barack Obama :: Julia Meade : Richard Nixon

by Anonymousreply 29January 28, 2014 2:14 PM

Charlie Sheen couldn't even begin to have the class, talent & charm that Errol Flynn had. Not even remotely in the same league.

I can't even put Goop & Crawford in the same sentence, except to say they don't belong in the same sentence.

And Madonna has proven she's just a old broken down whore & need to retire & disappear from the public's view. Her appearance on the Grammy's was a complete horror & embarrassment. She looked like the Wicked Witch of the West in that black outfit & hat.

by Anonymousreply 30January 28, 2014 2:20 PM

Maybe Lea Michele is today's Dorothy Davenport.

by Anonymousreply 31January 28, 2014 4:12 PM

Sheen is a talented guy who is all about his appetites. His rudeness and stupidity seems in some ways an updated version of the horrors Flynn subjected others and himself to. And today Flynn would be a cokehead.

Paltrow is all about asserting and keeping her prominence. And she fucks around. And she's nuts. And she's a horrible wife and mother. Yeah, Crawford is not a great match, but as a control-freak monster she has some of the characteristics of Paltrow. Maybe the brittleness Paltrow has is what separates them.

A lot of repetitious snitting here, which has become so typical of the Mean Girls Era.

They are today's Cheryl.

by Anonymousreply 32January 28, 2014 9:43 PM

R32: Interrupted her quilting bee in Arkansas to write that comment.

by Anonymousreply 33January 28, 2014 9:47 PM

"Maybe the brittleness Paltrow has is what separates them. "

Naw, class differences separate them. While Gwynneth has the annoying entitlement of those born to privilege, Crawford had the grasping, driven greed of someone who worked for every damn thing she had. Crawford would both despise Gwynneth and envy her, but she'd see a kindred soul in Madonna.

John Travolta is the new Rock Hudson, complete with charm rather than talent, long career, and glass closet.

by Anonymousreply 34January 28, 2014 10:38 PM

Blythe Danner is the new Sally Field.

by Anonymousreply 35January 29, 2014 12:45 AM

R21 and R22 hit it out of the park. I would never leave home if people talked about me like that but I guess you wouldn't care if you were narcissistic.

by Anonymousreply 36January 29, 2014 1:10 AM

One Direction is today's New Kids On The Block.

Of course. Madonna is totally responsible for the murder of 6 million Jews.

by Anonymousreply 51January 29, 2014 4:48 PM

R22, madonna wants to be today's Marlene Dietrich or Debbie Harry.

by Anonymousreply 52January 29, 2014 5:02 PM

Matt Lauer looks like the newest member of the Duck Dynasty clan.

by Anonymousreply 53January 29, 2014 5:23 PM

Bruce Jenner is hoping to become the new Joan Rivers

by Anonymousreply 54January 29, 2014 5:26 PM

R38, there is no today's "Grace Kelly". The closest would be Charlize Theron or Meryl Streep. Grace was a mutation, a freak of perfection that comes along only once a century.

Nicole Kidman is trying. Everyone is always trying.

The dumbest OP in recent times. There is no way to compare any of these people. Paltrow came from money, not class; she had a vulgar hustler dad, and a talented but stupid actor mother. She had mentors, who whether they stopped at a pat on the head or not, got her starring roles in which she made only a modest impact. Her major career was short, she's a footnote.

Crawford clawed her way up from destitution, was a show girl in New York (and perhaps more), fought her way up in LA and became one of the greatest movie stars IN THE WORLD for more than twenty five years. She made a huge number of movies. Like her or not she had tremendous force on camera and within limits could play a range of true leading parts -- as the center of the movie. She could be vulnerable as Mildred Pierce, voluptuous and self destructive in Humeresque and tough as nails in the Dammed Don't Cry, all within five years; even when campy or excessive she's unforgettable, the mark of a movie star.

Charlie Sheen is nothing. Flynn was like Crawford, a great international star, wonderful looking in his prime, with panache (look it up) and wit, and tons of charisma. Sheen is an idiot from inside the business with minimal comic talent at best.

Kate Smith was a great singer with a magnificent voice, a total pro who had a very long career and still had all her gifts after thirty years as a star.

Susan Boyle was a bizarre joke.

George Clooney comes from inside the business though he still struggled some, has some charm, is bright but limited. Was great looking, though that has faded. A decent actor in small films

Cary Grant (born Archie Leech) barely survived trying to be an actor in NY, was only hired as a last minute replacement for Gary Cooper, and became an immense, international star for forty years. He was great looking, crafted a persona what worked well in a vast range of parts, and had a remarkable magnetism. Like Crawford and Kate Smith he was utterly unique, love or loathe him. Clooney is above average but typical TV.

Madonna is remarkable, true. An ugly girl, who could hardly carry a tune but could dance a little, she crafted a memorable personality, which she has sustained for much longer than pretty much anybody ever with so little actual talent. Once again, love or loathe her, she's unique.

Crawford could act.

Crawford could never sell out MSG in seconds.

I mean, it is not like people are even trying.

by Anonymousreply 59January 29, 2014 6:04 PM

Ellen Page is the new Sally Field.

by Anonymousreply 60January 29, 2014 6:05 PM

Wasn't Joan Crawford the inspiration for Mommy Dearest? You do realize that was based on fact. Yes, I now see the resemblance!
