im grossed out by that picture of Lance Bass...

I loved Touched By An Angel. One of the episodes was about gay man with hiv and it was written and played very beautifully. The handsome Lawrence Monoson played the guy. I always cry in the end of the episode.

I linked the episode, it's called The Violin Lesson.

Start watching the episode from 36,00 if you don't want to watch it from the beginning.

R2, I remember that episode well. I saw it almost 20 years ago in a tv room at dorm with a couple of classmates. They didn't know I was gay (actually one was a girl who had a crush on me and was trying to get me to bed) and I had to keep myself completely calm during the whole episode. When it ended I said goodbye quickly and managed to walk into my room before I broke down completely and cried uncontrollably for half an hour. Such a sad one that episode, but so beautiful.

Touched By An Angel was in a way such drivel but I still loved it. I'm not Christian (although was raised as one) but the show somehow managed to stay away from being too Christian-y and was more of a universal thing. I loved that the message was the we are all on this planet together and none of us is perfect.

I have seen Violin Lesson only once but I'm gonna watch it tonight. This time alone and without fear of anyone judging me. I need a good cry at the moment so this link came at the perfect time. Thanks a lot man!

My partner's elderly mom, who is very Christian (but a Democrat and cool with the gay), used to watch the reruns but stopped because they never mentioned Jesus by name.

R4 Thanks for sharing. I saw it too back then, alone in my room and it took some time to get out of the room after crying. The episode stayed in my mind. I agree, the message was healing and being there to one another.

As a kid I watched Highway to Heaven in the 80s. I liked it despite the sometimes sappiness of the show. I also watched Touched By An Angel. The Violin Lesson was one of better episodes. I admit I had a crush on John Dye.

by Anonymousreply 7January 22, 2014 5:40 PM

I just watched Violin Lesson again and it was a complete cryfest here. I can't honestly imagine how I was able to watch that with a stone face back then with my classmates. Thanks for link again R2 :)

There weren't many gay characters in the show during its lifetime. I remember thinking they should have more, but then again I always thought the angel of death John Dye was gay.

Now that I googled whether John Dye is gay it came as a bit of a surprise that he died three years at 47 from a heart failure, although I now remember hearing about it at that time. Apparently he wasn't out (and not in the OP's gay actor list) but someone at realjock-forums wrote that his male friend used to date John Dye. RIP John.

by Anonymousreply 8January 22, 2014 8:56 PM

R8 because there is no definite confirmation he was gay, he is not on the list.

by Anonymousreply 9January 22, 2014 9:23 PM

Did they ever explain why Della wore two wigs at once?

by Anonymousreply 10January 22, 2014 9:27 PM

Yeah, I remember the Violin Lesson as well. I was shocked that a pro-gay message would appear on a Christian themed show. I wonder if there was any outcry then, as there surely would be today.

by Anonymousreply 11January 22, 2014 9:37 PM

who was the angel - woody allen?

now that would have been a storyline..

by Anonymousreply 12January 22, 2014 9:41 PM

John Dye was cute and Della Reese was sassy. I couldn't stand the insufferable, self-righteous Roma Downey. My mother used to live this show not because she is particularly religious but because she likes sappy stuff.

by Anonymousreply 13January 22, 2014 9:44 PM

Man, Guillermo Diaz is sexy.

by Anonymousreply 14January 22, 2014 10:05 PM

I always liked the episodes that featured an appearance from Satan.

During the course of the show he was played by a very young Thomas Dekker, David Ogden Queers and even John "Flashbulbs" Schneider.

by Anonymousreply 15January 22, 2014 10:34 PM

[quote] I wonder if there was any outcry then, as there surely would be today.

I was wondering about that too. I remember a lot of the TV controversies of the 90s. Entertainment Tonight would cover stories back then about people complaining about TV shows. I wouldn't be surprised if CBS received some complaint letters because of the episode, but the network stayed mum on the subject.

by Anonymousreply 16January 22, 2014 10:42 PM

Didn't Jasmine Guy appear on this show from time to time as a fallen angel or a servant of Satan?

by Anonymousreply 17January 22, 2014 10:46 PM

Does the list go from tops to bottoms?

by Anonymousreply 18January 22, 2014 10:46 PM

[quote]I always liked the episodes that featured an appearance from Satan.

I know nothing about this show and didn't know it had any gay actors on it or that it had any gay storylines, so the title of this thread caught my eye.

I was curious about who played Satan after reading this post, so looked it up. Mandy Patinkin played Satan--how fitting!

by Anonymousreply 19January 22, 2014 10:49 PM

[quote]Didn't Jasmine Guy appear on this show from time to time as a fallen angel or a servant of Satan?

Yes, but she eventually turned good again.

What was awesome about Guy's character was that while the angels would be bathed in a warm golden light when revealed, Guy's demon would be highlighted with a glowing purple when she revealed her true self.

by Anonymousreply 20January 22, 2014 10:49 PM

Yup Jasmine Guy played a fallen angel. I don't think her character ever became good again.

by Anonymousreply 21January 22, 2014 10:51 PM

Touched by a Penis

by Anonymousreply 22January 22, 2014 10:51 PM

R20, does that mean that Satan was Prince?

by Anonymousreply 23January 22, 2014 10:54 PM

The show was high camp which I think is why gay people enjoyed it so much.

They had one episode where a kid was roller blading (dangerously) intercut with Bart Conner and Nadia Comăneci doing a gymnastics routine to the theme of The Young & The Restless.

As Conner and companion pull off a great set, the kid attempts a flip and breaks his neck or something.

R21, her character did become good. They didn't make big deal out of it. I just remember her walking to an office or something looking ashamed, and that was it.

by Anonymousreply 25January 22, 2014 10:55 PM

Roma Downey is a right wing gay-hating cunt. I can't believe some of you watch this religious trash.

by Anonymousreply 26January 22, 2014 10:55 PM

[quote]Yup Jasmine Guy played a fallen angel. I don't think her character ever became good again.

Yes she did and as penance, she had to go study with Cloris Leachman.

by Anonymousreply 27January 22, 2014 10:58 PM

Estelle Getty appeared in one episode as an angel.

by Anonymousreply 28January 22, 2014 11:01 PM

R26, sad to hear if that's true. I haven't watched the show in years before tonight rewatching Violin Lesson so thankfully I don't have to actively avoid Downey. According to IMDb she's been mostly in some religious movies lately and I'm not watching those in any case.

by Anonymousreply 29January 22, 2014 11:03 PM

I just quickly googled Downey's anti gay stuff but didn't really find anything else than that she's married to Mark Burnett and they were behind the Bible mini series and the book based on it. In a video at Youtube they are asked about homosexuality and Burnett just says they believe that "love God with all your heart and love your neighbour like yourself".

I think these two are just milking the religious community. I remember the news of Downey buying some 100.000 dollar bracelet when she was still in Touched by an Angel, and I've never really thought about her being anything else than an actress. Sad and of course infuriating if she and Burnett use their influence to drive anti-gay agenda, though.

by Anonymousreply 30January 22, 2014 11:16 PM

I preferred the version with Catholic priests: "Inappropriately Touched By an Angel."

by Anonymousreply 31January 23, 2014 12:45 AM

I was in "Touched By An Anal". Remember me?

by Anonymousreply 32January 23, 2014 1:27 AM

how the Hades is she anti gay? Some people here just like to make stuff up without factual evidence.

by Anonymousreply 33January 23, 2014 1:39 AM

Hollywood power couple Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, who are producing a History Channel series called "The Bible," penned a glib op-ed Thursday in The Wall Street Journal advocating for the Bible to be taught in American's public schools.

"It's time to encourage, perhaps even mandate, the teaching of the Bible in public schools as a primary document of Western civilization," they wrote, adding that it should be done "for the sake of the nation's children."

As HuffPost reporter Jaweed Kaleem wrote Friday, there's been a huge marketing effort behind the series that includes partnerships with some of America's largest churches and most prominent evangelicals, like Jim Daly, president of Focus on the Family, an anti-abortion, anti-gay rights Christian organization. Kaleem also notes that the series's website has lesson plans for pastors who want to use the show in their sermons.

Della Reece

[quote]how the Hades is she anti gay? Some people here just like to make stuff up without factual evidence.

Fundies that want to force the Bible into public school classrooms very generally do not like gays. Plus her and her husband teamed up with Focus on the Family to increase viewership of their bible movie.

by Anonymousreply 37January 23, 2014 1:53 AM

i just saw this for the first time (5 in the morning on British TV) - wow it's super-corny. Like something out of the 70s. REAL Americana.

by Anonymousreply 38April 30, 2020 4:56 AM

Was this show The Love Boat of the 90s?

by Anonymousreply 39April 30, 2020 5:46 AM

Once this show went off the air, I tried pitching something a little different, which I entitled "Touched By Myself."

CBS wasn't buying.

Also, the autopsy following John Dye's heart attack supposedly showed he'd been a meth-head.

by Anonymousreply 40April 30, 2020 6:57 AM

Nixon and Paulson are bisexual

by Anonymousreply 41April 30, 2020 7:02 AM

But were they Friended by God?

by Anonymousreply 42April 30, 2020 7:07 AM

[quote]Touched by an Angel is an American fantasy drama television series that premiered on CBS on September 21, 1994, and ran for 211 episodes and nine seasons until its conclusion on April 27, 2003.

211 - episodes! Dear God!

by Anonymousreply 43April 30, 2020 7:50 AM

Shows that deal with this kind of thing either get cancelled after a couple of seasons or go on forever.

by Anonymousreply 44April 30, 2020 8:39 AM

I remember reading a comment somewhere that the British press reveals that people in the UK have too emotional responses , sentimentality and outrage. They go from "Awwww, how cute" to 'Fuck you!" in a heartbeat. DL is the same.

by Anonymousreply 45April 30, 2020 8:50 AM

Boy, someone really went way back to dig up this post.

Anyway, I see Datalounge fave Joe Penny wasn't listed as one of the gay actors.

I only watched the episode because he was on it, but he played a cop or fireman addicted to pills. There was an extended scene in a locker room with Joe wearing only a towel. Damn, he was a fine hunk of man!
