Nicole Holofcener Films
I really like her films-
Lovely and Amazing (Probably her best)
Friends WIth Money (I think this my favorite)
Please Give
She is pretty tight with Catherine Keener who appears in every single one of her films. Luckily I love Catherine too.
I'm about to watch Enough Said- James Gandolfini's final film, despite my intense hatred for Julia Louis Dreyfuss.
Hope it is worth it.
Anybody enjoy this director's little films?

I absolutely loathe JLD. I can not stand her. But I want to watch Enough Said. It looks pretty good

I don't really like Catherine Keener except in Holofcener films. I love the lack of glamor in her movies.

R3: Why do you loathe Jula?

I loathe her because she is the most overrated actress ALIVE. And Seinfeld is the most overrated piece of shit in the history of the world.

"Overrated": the laziest critics' favorite adjective.

"Enough Said" was one of the best movies I saw last year. Really well done. It was my first exposure to James Gandolfini (never saw "The Sopranos") and he was terrific, as were JLD and Keener.

JLD is not 'over-rated'. She barely registers in the scheme of things. Angelina Jolie? Now, that's over-rated.
And Enough Said was a great little film, with pitch perfect performances all around.

Love her movies, especially "Please Give".
I like JLD, especially in Seinfeld. Thought she was one the best things about the show. Also, like Veep. But I don't see her as a movie actress. However, having said that, I saw an early screening of "Enough Said," with a Q&A by Holofcener, and really liked it.
Also a big fan of Keener.

I thought 'Friends with Money' was under-appreciated.

Well this thread isn’t closed so I will bump it. I’ve seen a number of her films and liked them, but last night I watched “Walking and Talking” for the first time and thought it was very tedious. Maybe it was fresh and usual writing for the time, but I was not too impressed.
My other observation was that fashions have not changed one iota from 1996.

I can’t stand this Sundance shit.

My picks for top 3.
1. Walking and Talking - Liev Schrieber was adorably goofy in this (before his screen persona became super serious). Keener and Anne Hecht are great.
2. Friends With Money - Jennifer Aniston’s best performance.
3. Please Give - probably the first time I saw Rebecca Hall in anything...superb, underrated actress.

Lovely and Amazing is one of my favourite films of all time.

I've watched pretty much all of Holofcener's films since her first one, with Walking and Talking, but I must have missed Please Give. Didn't hear anything about it. I'll have to take a look.

I wasn’t able to make it past 20 minutes of her last one, “The Land Of Steady Habits”. Maybe I will give it another shot someday.

Yes. I really enjoy them. They remind me of Mike Leigh films. They’re about everyday people and situations, and although a lot happens, not much happens. Comfortable and uncomfortable at the same time. Can’t explain it, but yes.

Joan Cusack is another actress she has used in her films and Cusack never looked more lovely and genuine.

Love, love, love Please Give - her masterpiece.
Really like Lovely and Amazing and Walking and Talking.
I'm so-so on Enough Said & Friends with Money.
She made something recently on Netflix and it was terrible - easily her worst film to date.

R23 - that’s the film I mentioned at r19. You are not alone.
I think it’s her first film from a male point of view? I really didn’t care for the actor she cast in the lead.

she needs jennifer aniston

I love her movies too--even the most recent one, with a male lead.....She's smart, and makes movies about smart women.

Who are usually bitchy cunts. I think she's smart and bitchy and I've noticed, homophobic. Yes, the word fag has been used in a mean way and several other unpleasant references.
Her characters are the sorts of women who have often gay friends in real life, but never in Nicole's movies.
Not that I don't enjoy the movies.

I like them because she’s not afraid to make her characters realistic. Like my sister who can’t help controlling but loves mightily. They do shitty things. Also reminds me of Mike Leigh, whose films are ce ry character-driven.

Friends with money was okay. The stupid "haha he's a fag, isn't he" jokes got old fast though.

Overrated director and I'm glad she didn't direct Can You Ever Forgive Me? (2018), otherwise it would be filled with indie precious self-importance.

I like Holofcener's films, but they are hardly about "everyday people." The characters are usually rather well-off and part of the fun is that she tells the truth about the well-off and privileged. They are a good reminder that even the rich have financial insecurity and a lack of emotional resilience.

Her male characters are generally weak and nearly always unattractive.
