Many very talented actors are perfectly happy not being huge stars. If she likes the work she's doing and she makes the living she wants to make, there's no reason to go for big-budget films.

If she hadn't met Foster at a party in 92 I don't think she would have had a career. Who said lovers aren't forever?

I'm confused about the reference to her turning down "big roles". She turned down 'Game of Thrones' and 'Downtown Abbey' but with the latter it's well known that her vain foolishness caused that. The creator needled her about the missed opportunity last year, which rankled her so badly that she started announcing she'd turned the role down to any interviewer she could get to ask her about it (celebrities always have a list of 'safe' topics before interview rounds).

I'm not aware of any big roles she turned down when she had a reasonable q rating in America. Her name was thrown around for Scott's 'Hannibale' after Foster pissed all over the film (forcing a rewrite then dropping out anyway) but she was dropped from consideration based on fears of property dilution between both Fox and Universal, and because she had a serious coke addiction. Scott chose between Moore and Helen Hunt, wisely going with Moore.

I did the interview circuit for 25 years. Twice I interviewed Anderson. The best I can say about her is that she's gorgeous in person. She has a terrible personality.

But an acquaintance of mine provided the real insight into her life. In the late 90's she interviewed Anderson at her home for a big spread in one of the most respected magazines in the world. During this interview Anderson's live-in girlfriend wandered through the house totally naked, getting drinks and sitting next to Anderson for part of the interview. There was no shame about it according to this woman, and she was very excited thinking she was about to have one of the biggest 'coming out' stories ever. But before she left Anderson had some news for her: if she ever even hinted that she lived with woman then it would be the end of this interviewer's career. She threatened to "destroy" her. She also bragged that this woman was 'kept', that she was there to do what she asked sexually (that if she had told her to she would have gone down on her during the interview) but that thus did not make her gay.

The interviewer told her editor. He informed her that he shouldn't have to even tell her that this would never see print, that even tabloids weren't going to out her (or many, many other celebs) and that most people in the industry already knew. She ended the story by saying that it did see print: as a blind item.

It is true that Gillian Anderson was Julian Fellowes' first choice for Lady Cora in Downton Abbey. She turned it down because she didn't want to admit to herself that she was old enough to be the mother of adult children. Even though of course she was old enough, especially for that time period.
