I like her duet with Kenny Rogers Don't fall in love with a dreamer.

So, like seriously, what happened to the bitch's voice?
Did she gargle with drain cleaner as a child?
Did someone give a punch to her throat?
What!?

Why exactly is she a piece of shit?!?!? She seems awesome to me for giving us Bette Davis eyes, so what else matters.

oh my fucking GOD all these years I thought the lyric was "all the boys think she's a spaz she's got Bette Davis eyes"....Jesus Christ what an idiot I am. I was a teenager when this song came out too, so for yeeeeears I've been listening and singing along.

That's not the actual lyric? What is it?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | December 15, 2013 4:33 AM |
She was a flash-in-the-pan loser, the album with the Bette Davis song was actually her only album to make the top 40!

When the song first air, Bette Davis was really amused by the song and very flattered.

He is your brother and this is a gift to your parents. Don't be petty about it, just add his name. What if you were in his predicament? Because he lives beyond his means does not mean he should be penalized by not adding his name. He's suffering enough, so why add more to his pain? Remember, it's for your parents. I have hunch your mother will know it's from you anyway and she'll be touched by your kind gesture. Moms always know ....

What the fuck did that slut juice newton ever do?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | December 20, 2013 3:40 AM |
Yes, Bette Davis was amused and honored. She was gracious and Kim Carnes gave her two gold records. She did tell her "you sound like you swallowed a safety pin", but it was in good humor. She even wrote a letter to Kim, and commented on the lyrics by saying "how do you know so much about me?"
by Anonymous | reply 14 | December 20, 2013 3:41 AM |
As an unknown starlet, Bette struggled quite a lot in her early years. She wasn't considered beautiful by movie star standards, and just as they were about to cancel her contract, some studio boss decided her eyes were exceptional, and gave her another shot. No wonder she loved the song, she knew her eyes saved her career.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | December 20, 2013 3:42 AM |
Her voice was divine
by Anonymous | reply 16 | December 20, 2013 3:48 AM |
They said Bette Davis was a woman a head of her time along with other actresses back then who were very liberated and career minded. Bette Davis understood she was in a male dominated business and world. She wasn't afraid to fight back when she needed to. She was a a survivor.

HORRIBLE voice. thank goodness she never had that many hits.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | December 20, 2013 5:26 AM |
actually, for most of her career she was managed by Ken Kragen who was huge at the time. I was just a kid, but I remember he repped Ritchie, Rogers, Ross at one point...
She had 14 top 40 hits, 3 top 10, and 4 top 20.
Not too shabby.
After moving to Franklin, TN she penned more hits (including #1s) for country stars. She sold her home she bought from Jimmy Buffett and from what I heard she lives in a mansion in the mountains there.
A rumour I heard a while back is she was fucking Jeff Bridges.
She's had some filler recently, but looks good for someone in her late 60s There's a YouTube video of her performing in Rome last year.

9 entries on the main Top 40 chart, r21, and 3 of those were marginal 36-40. You're apparently padding your list with entries on minor specialty charts like Adult Contemporary.

Greta Garbo stand off sighs.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | December 21, 2013 9:22 PM |
One of her best songs was the very minor hit "Does It Make You Remember". It's a pretty ingenious mix of heartland rock, piano ballad, synth pop and blues.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | December 21, 2013 9:41 PM |
Not googling, I think it's "She's got Greta Garbo's standoffish sighs".

"She's got Greta Garbo stand up size "
meaning she's tall.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | December 21, 2013 10:02 PM |
I preferred her other hit, "Invitation To Dance", just a tad over "Bette Davis Eyes".
by Anonymous | reply 34 | December 21, 2013 10:12 PM |
God I remember Bette Davis Eyes being so overplayed on the radio. I ended up hating it because of that! Like nails on a chalkboard. Now that you mention it, I particularly hated how she sang the words "all the boys think she's a spy...she's got..."
by Anonymous | reply 35 | December 21, 2013 10:18 PM |
She looks pretty butch.

Kim Carnes was also part of the Flashdance soundtrack along with Irene Cara and Michael Sambello. "I'll Be Here Where the Heart Is" will always be associated with a certain event in my mind: I was in la Samaritaine in Paris and they were playing that song in the background when suddenly I noticed a guy cruising me. AFAICR he was really cute, but being 13/14 at the time I got both a boner and a scare at the same time.
I eventually ran away. Oh the turmoil!
by Anonymous | reply 37 | December 21, 2013 11:07 PM |
what the heck is a "stand off sigh?"
I'm not arguing, because I think that is the lyric too, but what the fuck?
Watching the video is interesting - she looks remarkably timeless...no awful 80s hair, her fashion silhouette isn't even awful...she looks beautiful in the video. If you compare it to, say, Pat Benatar's videos from the same year, it's amazing how Kim's look was actually really cool.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | December 22, 2013 6:07 AM |
Kim Carnes was the most underrated artist of the '80s.
Her songs "Does It Make You Remember", "Invisible Hands" and "Crazy in the Night" should have been bigger hits than they were.
I also love "You Make My Heart Beat Faster" which Eddie Money ripped off the beginning of in "Take Me Home Tonight."
"I Pretend" is also a really great song that elicits nostalgia for the early '80s era.
My favorite album of hers is "Cafe Racers."

Kim sang backup on Tina Turner's solo recordings of the 70s before her comeback success of the 80's. You can pick out her voice in this great version of Whole Lotta Love by Tina.

Aside from Kim Carnes whatever happened to Bonnie Tyler? She just disappeared after Total Eclipse of the Heart. She and Carnes should have done a duet or maybe backed Rod Stewart. All of them have scratchy voices that make you want to clear out the phlegm from your throat.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | December 22, 2013 7:32 AM |
I love her "Voyeur" and her version of Smokey Robinson's "More Love"...yeah I wonder why she wasn't bigger...she just never seemed to buy into all that trendy 80s fashion shit, even though her records have an 80s pop sound to them...
Bonnie Tyler was really big in the UK, wasn't she? She had that "Hero" song on the Footloose soundtrack, which I love too, and in the 70s "It's a Heartache." I miss female singers with character...today they all sound the same to me, really, the Katy/Britney/Gaga dance sound. I guess Adele stands out.

by Anonymous | reply 44 | December 22, 2013 2:19 PM |
I have her greatest hits and I listen to it a lot--except Bette Davis Eyes.
Does it Make You Remember is my favorite, but Invisible Hands, Heartbeat Faster, Hurricane, Voyeur, and Crazy in the Night are fun 80s pop as well.
What the hell IS Juice doing these days? I remember getting one of her albums for Christmas when I was 7 or 8.

Can't stand her voice - have a good cough, woman, it'll do you the world of good.
Also can't stand the song - stupid first line, Harlow's hair was not gold, it was platinum, hence her nickname.

Here is my favorite Bonnie Tyler performance from 7 years ago.... Tire Tracks and Broken Hearts.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | December 22, 2013 9:32 PM |
I hated her voice. But some people like female voices that sound like their vocal cords were shredded. Melanie, Courtney Love, Bonnie Tyler and Stevie Nicks are other examples of this.
I don't know that the speaking voices of Carnes and Tyler sound like (I think Melanie's speaking voice sounds relatively normal), but Stevie Nick's gnarly speaking voice gives me the creeps. Same with Courtney Love; just hearing her talk is akin to torture.

To those who think Kim Carnes is history I have some news. Her next album "Lighthouse" is coming out in Feb '14. Here are the trax:
1. Divided Hearts 2. I'd Lie To You For Your Love 3. Black And White 4. Piece Of The Sky 5. You Say You Love Me (But I Know You Don't) 6. Dancin' At The Lighthouse 7. Love Me Like You Never Did Before 8. Along With The Radio 9. Only Lonely Love 10. That's Where The Trouble Lies
I plan to buy it. She is primarily a SONGWRITER and NOT a singer, to those who don't like her singing style.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | December 23, 2013 2:21 AM |
Juice Newton is actually a great singer. I had to learn one of her songs and looked it up on youtube and ended up a big fan. She sings well and sings live without autotune. She is a better singer than any of the big money makers today. But that's old news, isn't it? I mean, nobody really expects Gaga or Katie Perry or Beyonce or any of these performers to actually sing well, do they?
by Anonymous | reply 51 | December 23, 2013 2:42 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 56 | December 23, 2013 4:17 PM |
"All the boys think she's a spaz." LOL!
Something about this song, though, because I held my own made-up lyrics on this one as a child. Having no idea who Bette Davis was, I would sing
"She's got better days than I..."
Though, I should have realized Bette Davis was the evil crone in one of my favorite childhood movies, Disney's "Escape to Witch Mountain!"
by Anonymous | reply 57 | December 23, 2013 4:20 PM |

"Her hair was hollow gold..."

R51 you need your ear checked if you think Juice Newton sings better than Lady Gaga. Gaga may be weird and over-the-top but she can sing quite well. Newton was acceptable but nothing outstanding.
Kim Carnes never could sing and has a horrible tone.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | December 24, 2013 10:00 AM |
I am pretty sure the actual line is "Her hair was HARLOT gold". As was pointed out, Jean Harlow was the original platinum blond, in fact that term was coined for her by studio publicists. Her hair was white blond.

Sorry Juice is much better than Lady Gaga, who basically just talk/sings through her songs.
Juice is a old school singer that started out at county fairs and doesn't need a microphone to sing.
Lady Gaga and Janet Jackson would be never have gotten through a door without the help of a microphone.

Also, Kim's 1982 album, 'Voyeur,' is an underrated classic.
So dark and eerie but exquisite at the same time. It sounded great next to The Fixx and Missing Persons and Talk Talk.
"Say You Don't Know Me" is one of the many paranoid and spooky songs on the album.
