"Under the Skin"

Could it be...good?

I read the book, and it was very creepy.

by Anonymousreply 109/03/2013

Here's the trailer with lots of Scar Jo.

by Anonymousreply 209/23/2013

It looks good. A bit Lynch-ian?

by Anonymousreply 309/23/2013

Scarlet looks good.

by Anonymousreply 409/23/2013

Bumping in honor of Scar-Jo, since we've all decided she's a hot commodity with the release of 'Lucy'. It's true. That's what we've decided. Anyway, I just saw this a couple weeks ago. What'd y'all think? It was fucking weird, right?

by Anonymousreply 507/28/2014

It looks intriguing.

by Anonymousreply 607/28/2014

Same here r1

by Anonymousreply 707/28/2014

I've had this movie for a few weeks. Haven't gotten around to watching it though.

by Anonymousreply 807/28/2014

There's practically no dialogue. I LOVED Birth but I don't get this one AT ALL.

by Anonymousreply 907/28/2014

Wait a minute, this movie is somehow different from Lucy? And it has ScarJo in it?

by Anonymousreply 1007/28/2014

Yes, R10. In Skin, she plays an alien who collects the skin of men who have erections.

by Anonymousreply 1107/28/2014

The book is available on Kindle Unlimited.

by Anonymousreply 1207/28/2014

The movie is a horrible, pretentious, badly edited borefest. Don't bother.

by Anonymousreply 1307/28/2014

I just watched it last weekend and... what R13 said. "Pretentious" is the perfect word to describe it. It actually could have been a great movie but there was no genuine depth to it at all. I was bored to tears through most of it.

by Anonymousreply 1407/28/2014

R13 and r14 are 100% spot-on. There was an on-line article that mentioned exhibitors surprise that UNDER THE SKIN and other art-house films were not getting an audience.

There is no mystery. The film was beyond awful and its very good critical reviews is the real mystery.

by Anonymousreply 1607/28/2014

How is the book different?

by Anonymousreply 1707/28/2014

Does the book have ScarJo?

by Anonymousreply 1807/28/2014

by Anonymousreply 1907/28/2014

Her boobs are mentioned countlessly in the book.

by Anonymousreply 2008/02/2014

I loved the book. I've only seen about 20 minutes of the film and wasn't in the mood for watching. I plan to watch the entire film one day. We'll see. Never liked ScarJo though.

by Anonymousreply 2108/02/2014

Have not seen the movie yet. but ScarJo seems fit to play this part.

by Anonymousreply 2208/02/2014

I went to see the film at the Quad (a dumpy Manhattan art house) about a month ago. There were only a few of us in the theater. As soon as the film started people started digging into their bags for food and snacks. The actual screen was of horrible quality; one could see the texture of it (for those who have seen the film, you can imagine what those white backgrounds from the beginning of the film looked like).

After about ten minutes I got up and left.

I still want to see the film. Hopefully with a civilized audience and in a proper screening room.

by Anonymousreply 2308/02/2014

I saw the film last week and was extremely disappointed. Even with all the (quite little) sci-fi stuff in the film I felt the movie was more about making notes about foreign prostitutes in the UK than about aliens on Earth.

I actually enjoyed the film until the man with the malformed head escaped. Then suddenly completely boring stuff until the very end. They spent tens of minutes telling very little and ended up killing the movie with it.

The movie had nice cool modern European cinema feel to it and with good screenplay it might've worked. Unfortunately it ended up being a mess.

by Anonymousreply 2408/02/2014

The scenes where she was cruising around in a van asking men for directions were filmed with a hidden camera; they were random non-actors.

by Anonymousreply 2508/02/2014

R25, how did they get permission to use their image in the film? I would sue if I were one of them.

by Anonymousreply 2608/02/2014

They asked them after the fact if they wanted to be in the film, R26.

by Anonymousreply 2708/02/2014

ahh thanks R27

by Anonymousreply 2808/02/2014

Wow, I think this is one of the best films of the year. Hypnotic and one of the most disturbing and haunting films I've ever seen.

by Anonymousreply 2908/02/2014

If you want to watch this and actually enjoy it be sure you drop some acid beforehand.

by Anonymousreply 3008/02/2014

One of the best movies in a long time. Beautiful cinematography and very well directed.

Just because you didn't get it, doesn't make the film pretentious. But I didn't expect anything different from DL.

by Anonymousreply 3108/02/2014

"Just because you didn't get it, doesn't make the film pretentious"

by Anonymousreply 3208/02/2014

Spoilers, but I guess there's been spoilers everywhere already.

I didn't like the film but I appreciated the pretty high quality film making. But like I said the script was a huge letdown. Does it mean I think the film's pretentious? Hmm, I don't know. I just think the woman's running away phase was done poorly. I felt the film suffered from pacing after the malformed guy escaped because before that it had had quite a steady flow of interesting things happening.

I had quite a different feel of the film based on the trailer where I got the idea that the woman is a heartless killer alien. I was sort of expecting the cold feel of the early 80's style of hard sci-fi à la David Cronenberg. And the first half of the film delivered. The last part failed because they couldn't make the woman or her story interesting. There really wasn't any kind of growth happening anywhere and the sci-fi element seemed missing.

But I "get" the film, and I understand what the director was after. I just didn't like it.

BTW, I think it was quite brave from Johansson to appear completely nude and with nude men with erections (which looked real although who knows). Too bad they didn't have the nude walk scene with the hottest guy she pulled, I was so pissed when they started a new scene.

by Anonymousreply 3308/02/2014

R33 - It was also brave of her to be nude while not trimmed down.

by Anonymousreply 3408/03/2014

The book reads almost like a social commentary satire in the realm of Brave New World.

by Anonymousreply 3508/08/2014

Very creepy but excellent movie.

by Anonymousreply 3609/27/2014

I loved the scene where she's at some bloke's house watching Tommy Cooper with a confused and concerned look on her face.

by Anonymousreply 3709/27/2014

I really liked the movie. Loved the ending and the special effects there.

R 33, I though she did change in that she did not want to lure the men in anymore and felt bad (or at least some kind of trepidation) about what she was doing even though she did not understand it. That is why she ran away.

by Anonymousreply 3809/27/2014

R38 - She does have a change in her feelings about the men.

by Anonymousreply 3909/27/2014

I didn't enjoy this film much (great in theory, slooooow in execution) but the segment with the family on the shore, and the baby crying, has really stayed with me all year. It was just a brutal, effective scene.

by Anonymousreply 4009/27/2014

It was a strange film. Mostly static from an entertainment standpoint (and even an intellectual one), though I quite enjoyed how the main character's sexuality shifted from a source of empowerment to one of victimization. And I'd be lying if I denied that at least a few bits of it got "under my skin."

by Anonymousreply 4109/27/2014

Under the foreskin...

by Anonymousreply 4209/27/2014

The scene with the baby abandoned on the beach is the most disturbing thing I've seen in films in as long, long time. Ugh.

by Anonymousreply 4305/09/2015

Almost no one's mentioned the pop.

by Anonymousreply 4405/09/2015

I saw it, and I liked it. The video down below goes some way to explain some of the things in the film, but the one thing I really found hilarious (and it caused much tutting and uncomfortable fidgeting) was that it showed one or two boners. Heh.

by Anonymousreply 4505/09/2015

I had to watch it with captions on to get the Scottish of her pickups.

by Anonymousreply 4610/05/2017

Only just saw this film, I loved it! Does anyone have any theories as to what the aliens actually wanted and what the male alien was up to? I felt like they were almost akin to ants or wasps or some other hive insect. Especially when he inspects her before she leaves at one point as if he would have killed her if she wasn’t up to par to do her job.

by Anonymousreply 4709/15/2020

Also how his ability to track her reminded me of how wasps etc. signal each other with chemicals
