Nancy Sinatra-Why?

Can someone explain the success of this talent- and charm-free, mostly tone-deaf "singer"? Was it the fact that she just happened to be the spawn of one of the biggest American singers? I can only imagine Frank must have called in some BIG favors to make that one happen.

by Anonymousreply 222December 12, 2019 10:46 AM

You sound like a real asshole, OP. A real old asshole.

by Anonymousreply 1August 13, 2013 1:36 AM

She was signed to her dad's Reprise label and had the good sense to collaborate with Lee Hazlewood, who wrote and produced some of her best and catchiest tunes. NS also epitomized the Mod style, which was all the rage in the UK and the US, which made her very popular on both sides of the Atlantic.

by Anonymousreply 2August 13, 2013 1:40 AM

And, OP, whether or not you like her voice, she wasn't "mostly tone deaf." Maybe you should learn what "tone deaf" means, you moron.

by Anonymousreply 3August 13, 2013 1:50 AM

OP:

I just found me a brand new box of matches yeah,

And there's a big 'ol grease fire that's about to burn.

Nancy Sinatra was just fine. She's iconic. And for her hit alone "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'," she's not to be fucked around with from the likes of you.

She showed her teeny tiny tits in Playboy

by Anonymousreply 10August 13, 2013 2:51 AM

You only live twice, OP.

Nancy hosts the "Nancy for Frank" show on Sirius/XM's Siriusly Sinatra channel. She plays some really obscure and interesting stuff at times, and has some pretty good stories as well.

by Anonymousreply 11August 13, 2013 3:07 AM

She had no range and could not carry a tune in a bucket. Made Stevie Nicks sound like Steisand. Obviously owed her career to her last name, because she has absolutely no singing talent.

by Anonymousreply 12August 13, 2013 4:38 AM

R12 is a thousand years old, yet has managed to not learn anything along the way.

by Anonymousreply 13August 13, 2013 7:10 AM

She had a very small range, yes; but she absolutely could carry a tune within it, and she was sexy and smoldering and the fact that she was Sinatra's daughter made her all the more exciting. And she had the good fortune to team up with Lee Hazelwood who knew exactly how to show off her talents to their best advantage.

No one had seen anything like her when she appeared on the scene. She was a real original, and she fit in perfectly with the style and sexuality of the era.

by Anonymousreply 14August 13, 2013 7:17 AM

She has a very good reputation in Hollywood for standing by and HELPING ($$$) old friends who are down on their luck or sick. So give her a break. She is a better human being than you, OP.

by Anonymousreply 15August 13, 2013 8:20 AM

R15. That's nice about Nancy Sinatra. I've heard the same thing about her father. For all of his tough guy gruffness, Frank Sinatra was very generous.

Frank Sinatra paid for Judy Garland's funeral. As Frank said, "The rest of us will be forgotten. Judy's the one they'll remember."

by Anonymousreply 16August 13, 2013 8:49 AM

She performed with Wilco a few weeks ago.

by Anonymousreply 17August 13, 2013 11:16 AM

So she's a sexy smoldering Mother Theresa. She still CANNOT sing and she ONLY had a career because her father was Frank Sinatra, mob singer.

by Anonymousreply 18August 13, 2013 12:11 PM

I didn't matter whether Nancy was a fabulous singer. She had a hip, icy, fuck-you attitude that most early '60s girl singers didn't have.

by Anonymousreply 19August 13, 2013 12:39 PM

OMG, who doesn't love Nancy Sinatra? Some old, shriveled, toxic queen, apparently.

by Anonymousreply 20August 13, 2013 1:32 PM

Listen to her work with Lee Hazelwood. If you still think she's a bad singer then you're just a cunt.

by Anonymousreply 21August 13, 2013 1:47 PM

r16 - Liza paid for Judy's funeral as wels as a couple million $$ worth of her debts. I'm sure Frank was a genreous, stand up guy with friends - but Liza worked her ass off to bring Mamma into good standing.

by Anonymousreply 22August 13, 2013 1:55 PM

r12, don't mess with any female pop singers, white ones anyway. Gets DL's collective caftan in a bunch.

by Anonymousreply 23August 13, 2013 2:29 PM

You asked why Nancy Sinatra was a star and we explained it to you. Now you're just whining.

by Anonymousreply 24August 13, 2013 4:45 PM

Watch this slowly turn into a Judy thread.

by Anonymousreply 25August 13, 2013 5:01 PM

She had the look and the attitude -- and her music is a lot more listenable today than that of dreary hippies like Joan Baez.

by Anonymousreply 26August 13, 2013 5:10 PM

by Anonymousreply 28August 13, 2013 5:49 PM

OP, and you think Britney Spears, Janet Jackson, and JLo can sing? Or even Lesley Gore for that matter?

by Anonymousreply 29August 13, 2013 5:55 PM

Lesley Gore actually is a pretty good singer, the problem is her voice is only suited to a style that went permanently out of fashion by the end of the 60s. Plus she can't sing ballads, unless you like Wayne Newton, because that's who Lesley sounds like when singing ballads. Her voice was always very high, which worked perfectly for her frothy girl-group hits, but you notice it more on the ballads.

by Anonymousreply 30August 13, 2013 6:06 PM

Who the fuick doesn't like Nancy Sinatra?! She made a few records in the course of a few years--and people are still talking about her. And then went onto perform all over the world. She even went on the road and entertained the troops. That's pretty goddamn good record for show business.

She's one of the first ladies of rock 'n roll, so hit the road OP. Jesus Christ. Who the hell are you--Debbie Downer.

And by the way, Nancy's "Playboy" spread remains one the top sellers of all time.

by Anonymousreply 31August 13, 2013 8:38 PM

About seven years ago, I attended a Summer Pops outdoor concert in San Diego where Frank Sinatra, Jr. performed, who by the way, is also a very good singer. He's quite the musician and sounds just like his father. Okay fine, there can only be one Frank Sinatra, but Frank Sinatra, Jr. was goddamn good.

In the middle of the concert during Frank Jr's banter with the audience, he said he wanted to introduce someone who is even more famous than he is and someone who made her mark in the music industry. The spotlight came on and immediately lit up Nancy Sinatra's table. As soon as her brother announced Nancy's name, a loud, quite audible gasp came form the audience who then erupted in applause.

What a hoot to have Nancy Sinatra in the audience. The crowd loved her as she rose to wave and acknowledge their cheers. There she was--Nancy Sinatra sitting there with her kids cheering on her brother. The audience was thrilled.

So OP--that's why!

by Anonymousreply 32August 13, 2013 8:52 PM

I'm surprised there's so much hostility about someone stating the obvious, she had a mediocre voice. And Boots, the signature song, is just a catchy novelty song. It didn't need a great or even particularly memorable vocal to be a hit, and it sure didn't get one either.

by Anonymousreply 33August 13, 2013 9:40 PM

Nancy Sinatra has had quite a career. Good for her.

by Anonymousreply 34August 13, 2013 10:17 PM

Lee Hazelwood for starters. Plus Nancy, while having a limited vocal range, was very good when she had songs that were right for her. She could sound either tough and jaded, as on These Boots, or ethereal and sweet, as on her masterpiece of a duet with Hazelwood Some Velvet Morning

Autotune would have helped. The same could be said of her father in the last ten years of his appearances.

by Anonymousreply 39August 13, 2013 11:54 PM

It's one thing to say that Nancy Sinatra wouldn't have had a career if it wasn't for her father, which is probably true in the sense that it's obviously much easier for someone with major connections to get a start in show biz. And I think we'd all agree it's fair to say that Nancy's voice was "mediocre" compared to Streisand and other great voices of our time. But anyone who says Nancy was "charm free," "untalented," and "mostly tone deaf" only makes himself look stupid, as in "Somethin' Stupid."

by Anonymousreply 40August 14, 2013 3:44 PM

OP, the short answer?

I just thought she was cool. When 'boots' came out, I was 7 years old and they played that song over the airwaves ALOT. She was also on every show from Hullabaloo to the Man From UNCLE, so she was everywhere. At that point, young girls HAD to have a pair of white go-go boots, and I was one of them. I begged my mom and got a pair for my birthday and wore those babies out.

Because her fans were mostly young girls like me, the fact that she was not the best singer didn't matter. Think Madonna in the very beginning of her career when every girl wanted to dress like her.

I have a copy of Movin' With Nancy. Great memories.

Here's the RC cola commercial from the show:

by Anonymousreply 46August 14, 2013 6:22 PM

Nancy Sinatra always tells the story of the time Lee Hazelwood and herself were at her Mom's house listening to hundreds of demos for her first album.

Frank Sinatra was in the living room reading the paper as it was Sunday dinner (Divorced 17 years he tried never to miss Sunday dinner with his family)...

After hours of playing song after song, Nancy went in to say Hi to her Dad and asked him if there was anything her heard he liked...

Frank responded (with his hatred for rock music) that it all "sounded like shit to him"..........."Except for the song about the boots....the boots song is good"...

She has Papa to thank for that (among other things like one third of every royalty paid to Sinatra from his death on..)

by Anonymousreply 50August 15, 2013 1:35 AM

Not only is her "Nancy For Frank" program on Siriusly Sinatra 71 top-notch, she's been involved with "Little" Steve Van Zandt's garage/underground music initiative.

She's a trooper, and a great broad, in the very best sense of the word. Hell of a raconteur, as well.

Go listen to Nancy & Lee Hazlewood's "Sweet Cherry Wine", then listen to Lana Del Rey's version.

You'd have to be a pretty damned bored and curdled string of misery to throw shade at her, of all people.

by Anonymousreply 51August 15, 2013 1:47 AM

I have had the PLEASURE of meeting Nancy Sinatra and I LURVE her so.

Nancy Sinatra is one of the kindest, salt-of-the-earth, compassionate, generous, and self-effacing people I have ever met.

She's also very cool, and even cooler with the gays.

Give her respect, people.

TestiFY!, brother R52!

by Anonymousreply 55August 15, 2013 2:13 AM

Part of the public's fascination with Nancy Sinatra at the time was, apart from being Frank's daughter, she was Mrs. Tommy Sands, wife of the '50s teen singing sensation. Despite the lack of hits early in her music career (she was in danger of being dropped from Reprise), she made the covers of teen mags and gossip rags due to her association with Sands. After their divorce in '65, Nancy had a complete image overhaul, transforming from conservative-looking housewife to liberated blonde sexpot in miniskirts and go-go boots, showcasing the latest in Carnaby Street fashions and Swinging Sixties attitude. That, combined with the don't-fuck-with-me-fella, pre-feminist anthem "These Boots Are Made for Walking" struck gold with young female audiences. It was the [italic]Emancipation of Nancy[/italic]. Tommy Sands, on the other hand, followed the opposite career trajectory, supposedly having been blacklisted from the industry by his former father-in-law.

by Anonymousreply 56August 15, 2013 2:21 AM

Have you ever heard of the word "camp," OP? She and her music and, ahem, "acting," were trashy and fun. I think she's great. Morrisey produced an album for her in the late 90s/early 2000s and it was quite good.

by Anonymousreply 57August 15, 2013 2:22 AM

R56, how could she be dropped by her FATHER'S label? He owned it, didn't he??

by Anonymousreply 58August 15, 2013 2:36 AM

In an interview with Larry King, Nancy admitted that she adored Ava Gardner, though she would feel guilty about that upon returning to her mother's house after a visit with Frank and Ava.

by Anonymousreply 59August 15, 2013 2:42 AM

She was aware of her limitations and worked within them. She wasn't trying to be a Streisand, fer chrissake. And I'd rather listen to any of Nancy's classic records than Babs or any other belter. Fair enough, you don't like Nancy's voice, but "charm-free"? That criticism makes no sense at all.

Her best work was with Lee Hazelwood, no technically proficient singer himself. That doesn't make the music any less enjoyable.

Why pick on Nancy? Why not Claudine Longet, Brigitte Bardot or any of the talentless singers of today who rely on autotune? Seems like a weird ax to grind with someone whose records haven't been popular for 40+ years.

by Anonymousreply 60August 15, 2013 2:49 AM

The first album I ever bought was Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood. I think I was in 4th grade. I don't often admit to this.

by Anonymousreply 70August 15, 2013 3:30 AM

Auto tune would have ruined her, that's so obvious and unprofessional.

by Anonymousreply 71August 15, 2013 3:31 AM

To point out the glaringly obvious: quality of material > voice

Yeah so she couldn't sing for shit but that's hardly the point. Famously "These Boots" is the easiest song to sing, so limited is the range and hence covers by Geri Halliwell and Paula Yates.

But she and mentor Lee Hazlewood (also couldn't sing for shit) made some of the best records of the 60s with their detached ironic duets.

by Anonymousreply 72August 15, 2013 3:37 AM

I've always loved her cover of Petula Clark's "Call Me". Her voice is so smoldering and sexy on this song. In fact, I often play it before going out for the evening.

by Anonymousreply 94August 15, 2013 11:06 PM

R91. I'm not trying to compare her to Etta James of all people. What I'm trying to say is that her delivery in that one song is very raw and real in that she is giving the fellow she is singing about the what for wonderfully. You can tell from the first line that the song is a tell off song. She knew what she was doing very well even if she didn't inherit her father's vocal talents.

by Anonymousreply 95August 15, 2013 11:15 PM

I disagree that her "appeal was mainly visual." That's not what makes the Nancy & Lee albums so timeless. Great songwriting, great production and the blend of their two unique voices.

So why no latterday career resurgence for Nancy?

by Anonymousreply 97August 15, 2013 11:22 PM

Certainly being Frank Sinatra's daughter opened every showbiz door for her but Nancy Sinatra delivered the goods and she's well respected.

Note that the careers of her siblings (Tina and Frank Jr) never took off. Having a famous parent can only do so much.

Nancy Sinatra did not have a great voice... but it sure was effective.

The Hazlewood collaboration produced some fabulously artsy stuff.

I've always wondered if Sinatra's 1966 look was the inspiration for Jane Fonda's look, 2 years later, in Barbarella.

by Anonymousreply 98August 15, 2013 11:23 PM

No surprise that Nancy is loved here and a proper icon, gay or otherwise.. any of that 60s girl group type stuff is instant pop nirvana.

Her comeback album was decent enough as those things go, but I preferred Mary Weiss (Shangri-Las) comeback.. if only just to have her back. "Let Me Kiss You" is the one stinker of the You Are the Quarry singles. Morrissey and Nancy had an awkward moment in his documentary when Nance said how much she loved the Queen.

by Anonymousreply 99August 15, 2013 11:31 PM

This is a great cover. Out goes the towering melodramatic bombast replaced with some lovely ironic ennui.

These records were well ahead of the time and there wasn't anything like them in the 60s and they're constantly brought up as a reference by indie artists.

Nancy Sinatra was considered a JOKE -- AT THE TIME. Aside from These Boot are Made for Walking, NOBODY took her seriously for a second.

I cringed when Mad Men used her vocal of a Bond tune at the end of a very good episode. Don't these fools know what a joke Nancy Sinatra was??? Song was good, how, about using a Jack Jones or Al Martino cover?

by Anonymousreply 104August 15, 2013 11:58 PM

[quote]So why no latterday career resurgence for Nancy?

R97. The music business is very, very tough. If you fall out of the spotlight, it's pretty much over. But Nancy did make a couple of albums in the latter days and hit the road performing in clubs.

But why no big resurgence? Because the music industry is almost solely focussed on youth. If you haven't noticed, Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga and Rihanna suck all the oxygen everywhere they go. Look at the boy bands of the '90s. Yes, they've had a bit of a resurrgence, but it's somewhat short-lived. Yes, they're touring now, but they will fade.

Yes, there are some grown-ups who continue to sell records like Streisand and Cher, but that because they're Streisand and Cher, but it's also because Barbra and Cher never left the industry--they have continued to work and stay relevant.

Nancy put her career on hold when her second husband died of cancer and her kids were still young. She decided to be a Mom until her kids were out of college. Well, that might have been good for her kids, but it didn't help her career and visibility in today's market.

by Anonymousreply 105August 16, 2013 12:03 AM

R101 You are completely wrong. You make no sense:. "Boots" was a smash and got 3 Grammy nominations. "Sugar Town" was a million seller. "jackson" was a hit (and was later covered by Johnnie Cash). "Summer Wine" was a hit. "You Only Live Twice" was a hit and remains iconic. "Something Stupid" was a no.1 smash in 1967...9 weeks on the chart.

Some joke.

by Anonymousreply 106August 16, 2013 12:07 AM

If Nancy was considered a joke in the '60s, what did people think of Claudine Longet? Talk about having no range (though I admit her records have a certain camp appeal).

by Anonymousreply 107August 16, 2013 12:09 AM

Personally, I think Claudine Longet was right on target.

by Anonymousreply 108August 16, 2013 12:12 AM

I will give "Bang Bang" to Sinatra - her version is much better than Cher's.

by Anonymousreply 109August 16, 2013 12:13 AM

There's really no comparison between Nancy Sinatra and Claudine Longet. Nancy actually was a singer whether you liked her or not. Claudine was a little kewpy doll who happened to chirp out a few songs, dated Andy Williams...and then shot her boyfriend Spider Savich.

by Anonymousreply 110August 16, 2013 12:21 AM

She played a party for me once.

Nobody gave a thought to Claudine Longet. Not ever.

R106, I was around in 1967. Where were you?

by Anonymousreply 113August 16, 2013 12:33 AM

R103, we are looking for an adult pop singer to sing a ballad. The Rolling Stones didn't do that. The Stones were kids stuff -- not adult, in 1967. But you wouldn't know that.

by Anonymousreply 114August 16, 2013 12:35 AM

I can recall some department stores not displaying one of her LP's . . . the one with her wearing a bikini while standing in a field.

Her "Sugar" album was great fun, with wonderful arrangements of songs from the 20s and 30s, like Sweet Georgia Brown, Limehouse Blues, Hard-Hearted Hannah, and so on. I still treasure my scratchy old vinyl copy of it.

It is interesting that while Nancy has several times mentioned Adam Lambert as being her favorite contemporary male singer (with a voice comparable to her Dad's), she has also said that Lana Del Rey is her favorite of the contemporary females.

Perhaps that means she sees Del Rey as closest to the young Nancy in terms of presentation and performance.

by Anonymousreply 122August 16, 2013 2:57 AM

Lana has named Nancy as a major influence (and covered Summer Wine not too long ago). Lana's not that gifted in the vocal department either, but she works with what she's got. They should do a duet sometime.

by Anonymousreply 123August 16, 2013 3:09 AM

Nancy's late hubby was named Lambert. Was he related to Adam?

Nancy's stuff was f'ing awesome. And she wasn't always buried in expensive production. "Boots" was just acoustic guitar & bass and some brass stabs. A "no-talent" couldn't pull that off, now could they? One of the brightest pop moments in a decade that was about to become very dire.

It was her brother Frank Jr. that was the real no-talent jerk. Recall if you will that he once referred to KISS as "bad fag rock".

Boots was her lesbian lover. So her hit, which went to #1 unlike Joni Mitchell who didn't have a #1 hit, was about sending her cheating lesbian lover away. So she could make incest with her daddy on her other #1 hit.

Geez TWO #1 hits? Were they giving them away? And yet Joni couldn't get even one.

by Anonymousreply 165April 4, 2015 7:53 PM

R167, well, i can see why it was one of the best selling issues ever. Hot Nancy. I bet her sex life was very active when she chose to do that. She seemed content.

Nancy was the opening act or the B-52s at Humphrey's in San Diego about 10 years ago. She was terrific. Sang for an hour and then finally at the end did a great "These Boots Are Made For Walking."

by Anonymousreply 169April 4, 2015 8:32 PM

Tina is the one that's supposedly a total cunt. She manages her father's estate, at least the artistic side of it, and gets to decide who can use his songs, etc. and she's mean, greedy and rude about it. She once said, "I am Frank Sinatra."

by Anonymousreply 170April 4, 2015 8:35 PM

Nancy Sinatra and Cher are the coolest chicks ever.

by Anonymousreply 171April 4, 2015 8:43 PM

Well I never thought she was all that talented but it is nice to hear she's a good person. Her dad once was a good person but when he turned Republican that part of him had to have died long before his actual death.

by Anonymousreply 172April 4, 2015 8:46 PM

Nancy is certainly intriguing. I like her, with or without her nude photos.

I found this info interesting:

Hazlewood set about reinventing Nancy as a "tough little broad", dyeing her brown hair blonde, swapping her ballgowns for Carnaby Street fashions and persuading her to wear boot-polish black eye make-up and frosted lipstick. He also persuaded her to lower her vocal pitch.

Hazlewood told her to sing it "like a 14-year-old girl who screws truck drivers" ("14" was later sanitised to "16" and "screws" to "dates"), and it sold five million copies to an audience blissfully unaware that, as Hazlewood put it, "anyone in my part of Texas knows that messin' [as in "You've been messin' where you shouldn't have been a messin"] means f*****'."

Initially, Nancy Sinatra sang alone. But when Reprise suggested she move on to duets, she insisted that only Hazlewood would do.

The songs' scurrilous lyrics, with their thinly-veiled references to drugs and sex ("Some velvet morning when I'm straight/ I'm going to open up your gate") were part of the attraction.

So too was the implication that theirs was more than a singing partnership, though Hazlewood maintained that they were just good friends and, in any case, Nancy, as a nice Catholic girl, never understood what she was singing about, having sensibly decided not to ask.

I was a young teen when I first heard Boots. Instantly hated it, and her. She was so obviously trading on her famous name, because she couldn't sing for shit. She talked-sang, like non-singing actors cast in musicals did. I was a musicals fan, so I was very familiar with such fakery.

She was on all the variety shows with that fucking song. There was no escape. I was so sick of it, and her, and her attempts to be sexy. I didn't think she was any prettier than she was talented - her face looked so odd. I didn't realize then that was because of her extreme nose job.

Over the the next year she released more ear-torturing songs that inexplicably became hits. Each worse than the next in her hoarse, tuneless voice. She had zero talent or musicality... just her last name. She knew that so she pulled her father out of mothballs and the resulting hideous Something Stupid just about ruined the summer of '66 for me.

Don't even get me started on that subsequent horrible Lee Hazelwood shit. He sounded as bad as she did. Two song butchers for the price of one. Ugh. Total ear assault.

Nancy Sinatra may be a nice woman and good for her if she is. But her "music" will always be an instant click for me.

by Anonymousreply 177April 5, 2015 5:25 PM

"You only live twice" was a very good Bond theme.

by Anonymousreply 178April 5, 2015 9:35 PM

I read somewhere that he bought the rights to Boots for Nancy the day she was born.

I don't think he and the son got along.

But as much as Frank hated Bobby Kennedy for busting up the friendship with JFK - the day his son was kidnapped, his first phone call was to Bobby.

by Anonymousreply 179April 5, 2015 9:52 PM

I heard they want her to sing with Lou Christie, He has the voice and all the magic it has to bring her back, after all they were no 1 the same time in the 60s Lightning Strikes and Boots. They were both interesting and sexy all at the same time.

Nancy Sinatra was a victim of bullying at her school. Oh, the mean girls were out in full-force and on her cute little ass.

R201, you should tell Nancy that it would be FANTASTIC if she could cooperate with Alain Whyte for her next album!

Don't you agree that the way she sang 'Let Me Kiss You', was LOVELY? This song suited her voice perfectly. I believe that Alain Whyte's songs in general suit Nancy's voice. It would be brilliant if these two could work together.

Actually, i also think that Boz Boorer and Jesse Tobias should write songs for her, their music becomes her. It's a crime that these gifted people don't write songs for NANCY SINATRA. It would be pure magic, this cooperation....
