Part of it is reputation. Marines are known as the most hardcore, gung ho branch. They are filled with true believers who are sold out to the military. They pride themselves on being the most intense, most fearsome military branch. They are the guys you want on your side when you get in trouble. They are not afraid to fight when everyone else is freeing. They are perceived as more overtly masculine, even macho than just about everyone else.

Part of it may be physical. Guys who are that kick ass gung ho probably are pretty dedicated to working out and physical activity. They probably also pride themselves on being big, buff, and muscular too because they want a physique to match their robo military attitude. Additionally, there jar head haircut is unapologetically macho and intimidating. Lots of muscle, low bodyfat. These are attributes that most or many people find very masculine, and therefore, extremely atractive.

I spent seven years in the Army. For two of those years I worked with members of all branches of the armed forces. I have to agree with the OP. The Marines do seem to have the highest percentage of drop-dead gorgeous studs.

Why? I think R8 said it pretty well and there's no reason repeating what he said.

It all depends on the job in many instances. The thousands of office workers in the military don't spend a lot of time in the gym. Look at the military bands that are on concert tours all through the year. They don't have a lot of gym time.

I've read that the Marines have the highest rejection rates of all the military branches, even before they hit basic. Is it that the corps has more stringent physical requirements or is it that a larger percentage of applicants are skewed to some sort of psychological instability? Do they attempt any sort of psych evaluation?

When I was a child and teen, my parents had some friends whose son was "off." My interaction with him was limited, but even then I could tell there was something wrong.. He was overweight, had limited social skills, and probably was a bit on the slow side. He seemed like someone who would either be teased or bullied at school or was a complete non-entity. Unsurprisingly, he didn't make it through basic. He really became a sad sack, and developed a terrible floor-to-ceiling hoarding problem. Got a mail order type of gf who bilked him.. This was back in the mid-eighties. Maybe they had problems meeting quotas.

I work supply for the U.S military, Air Force are the smartest by far. Marines are the dumbest.

The culture of toughness, manliness and being one of "the few, the proud," etc. The Marines were/are considered an elite branch of the service, though technically part of the Navy & Marines. It's harder to become a Marine, and the standards are (or were) higher. This includes physical fitness. In the past (such as when me Dad, Mom and Grandpa were serving in the Marines, the culture among make Marines trended towards ruggedness and risk-taking, and heavy drinking was part of that culture. I don't know if it still is now. During WWII some rations even included a pack of 4 cigarettes for free.

Historically, the Marines were the ground troops for the Navy. But Marines had different jobs. My dad was a pilot. My Mom worked in codes and communications. My grandfather was a expert rifleman. They had a wide variety of jobs but they were all Marines. The Department of the Navy includes the Navy, the Marines, and in a time of war, the Coast Guard. There have been some attempts in Congress to rename it as the Department of the Navy and Marine Corps.
