Do you towel dance at the gym?

More guys seem to be. Is it a generational modesty thing? Is it old troll fear? Is it hidden cams?

by Anonymousreply 230September 4, 2020 6:37 AM

Enough of the shunning-type homophobia. Are you attempting to remove gay people from the DL so you can admire yourself without distraction?

by Anonymousreply 1January 23, 2013 1:23 PM

OMG, I'm happy i'm not in the hissing years category!

by Anonymousreply 2January 23, 2013 1:25 PM

VERY bad poll.

My answer is sometimes...

If I see a guy on a phone sitting nearby or a troll endlessly tying his shoes with his eyes trained on my crotch, YES.

If everyone is cool, then no.

by Anonymousreply 3January 23, 2013 1:31 PM

LOL R1... no... hissing years is meant to be a joke. (I half expect to be told hissing years start around 35, at some point.) Apparently either I wound or you need to lighten up. Hey, new poll!

by Anonymousreply 4January 23, 2013 1:34 PM

I do the fan-dance

by Anonymousreply 5January 23, 2013 2:00 PM

This hissing on DL by far comes from the younger posters.

Towel dancing is amusing. I see it as embarassment, lack of comfort with self. No one towel dances in Europe or South America and no one did 20 years ago. We are in new era of prudism so peculiar to America over out history. I suppose lack of early in life public exposure to nudity due to funding cuts to public education phys ed programs is partly the cause. I find it astounding. I remember my first swim classes at the YMCA when I was about 6 years old. All my peers and our counselors were in their "birthday suits". Has never bothered me my entire life to undress in front of other men, or women for that matter.

It is particularly funny (and ironic) with all the body grooming (including pubic hair) and tattooing etc. Not to mention pants and shorts half an inch above the pubic bone with naked lower bellies etc.

And anyone who is afraid of older men or whatever "looking at them" is hiding behind insecurity. No one, straight or gay, comfortable in their own skin gives a rats ass who is looking at them and if fact if they do, pride is what they feel, as they should- gay or straight- whether naked or clothed.

by Anonymousreply 6January 23, 2013 2:19 PM

We are most afraid of what we fear we will become.

by Anonymousreply 7January 23, 2013 2:48 PM

I recently read about a survey of young males who defined as straight, regarding nudity at the gym and summer camp.

I don't have the specifics and percentages, but the number one reason for towel dance was concern that they might get an accidental erection. The next highest reasons were their genital size and their circumcision status. Of the half dozen reasons listed, the lowest concern was being seen by gays. Nearly all wished they didn't have hang-ups about nudity.

Most said their fathers had no problem with nudity and they felt their own attitude would move in that direction as they get older.

by Anonymousreply 8January 23, 2013 2:50 PM

R8, very interesting. Thanks for sharing...

by Anonymousreply 9January 23, 2013 2:54 PM

I don't care so much about people watching me, or about trolls.I have some hang ups about nudity (thanks Mom and Dad) and about my body (fit/fat)so I have to really make an effort not to do the towel dance.

by Anonymousreply 10January 23, 2013 3:00 PM

Fit-fat is hot though. Enjoy your special status!

by Anonymousreply 11January 23, 2013 3:24 PM

I'm so fat I can't towel dance. I try, but during the contortions the thing flies off anyway, so nobody's happy!

by Anonymousreply 12January 23, 2013 3:44 PM

How are all you posting here? Oh yeah THE INTERNET. That's what brought on the modesty. I know you think you have a right to oogle anyone you want and are pissed you can't as much now, but more and more hidden camera shots end up online. Lots of people are aware of this and want to avoid it. It ain't always about YOU.

by Anonymousreply 13January 23, 2013 3:51 PM

I'm so glad this topic has finally come up here, because we never cover it on this forum ever!

by Anonymousreply 14January 23, 2013 4:04 PM

I am sorry for your anger, R14. What would you like to talk about then?

by Anonymousreply 15January 23, 2013 4:07 PM

That sort of "modesty" completely defeats itself because it's so strange. It attracts the very attention it seeks to avoid.

At the gym the other day I showered next to a young guy who showered in his underwear. THAT attracted more attention than if he had just been naked. Everyone looked at him.

I paid attention because I wanted to see if he would keep them on when he towelled off. Would he eventually take them off before he got dressed? Would he do the towel dance?

He towelled off in his wet undies, very quickly took them off and put on a pair of dry ones he had with him. He then wrapped his towel around his waist and went to get dressed.

If he had just been normal and naked I wouldn't have paid the least bit of attention to him or what he was doing.

by Anonymousreply 16January 23, 2013 4:18 PM

R13, I am in a locker room just about every day of the week- either at my gym in NYC or my tennis club. I have never seen a hint of anyone using a mobile device to take a pic or a video, and there are no cameras of any kind in the lockerrooms of Equinox in NYC or the tennis club on Randall's Island or any other club I play at. And if an anonymous pic of me apppears on the Internet changing in the lockerroom (which will not happen), I don't care one little bit- not that I would ever even know about it.

by Anonymousreply 17January 23, 2013 5:08 PM

When someone goes into a rant over the possibility of someone photographing him at the gym I sometimes wonder if it's due to his mini-dick or the fact that he weighs 380 lbs. Body shame often shows up in DL threads. You'll never find any of those folks at a nude beach.

by Anonymousreply 18January 23, 2013 5:19 PM

Why the fuck do you people care? Clearly, the only people who give a shit about this are creepy, hissing eldergays who want to leer at young flesh.

It's fucking disgusting.

by Anonymousreply 19January 23, 2013 5:21 PM

I suspect the underwear-in-shower guy of having a STD.

by Anonymousreply 20January 23, 2013 7:41 PM

Funny, how it's always old desperate trolls who complain about other guys towel dancing.

Unless you're directly checking him out, it shouldn't matter if he's covered or not.

by Anonymousreply 21January 23, 2013 7:52 PM

I don't care if someone "towel dances". I'm sure a lot of my younger friends do it. But it sure is odd and as I said earlier, considering the tats, coifed pubes, and "tans" of those who are so concerned with exposing that little region of their bodies, it's pretty odd behavior. It is also altogether absent in Europe and South America as I said and does beg the question why?

Lets get something straight though- I do not go into locker rooms to get a flash of crotch from 20 something year olds. I use them to change clothes and clean up after a workout.

by Anonymousreply 22January 23, 2013 7:59 PM

Because they don't want you checking them out r22!

All gyms have one or two old dudes that do nothing but cruise the showers. I go to a gym in a predominantly straight area and still the shower is full of old trolls, and they're always looking for fresh meat. If they see you with a towel, they move on. If they see you naked, they take that as an invitation to stalk.

by Anonymousreply 23January 23, 2013 8:04 PM

The courage to gyrate in a towel but yet not enough nerve to say 'piss off!'

by Anonymousreply 24January 23, 2013 8:15 PM

Does Barbra do the towel dance, Charlie?

by Anonymousreply 25January 23, 2013 8:16 PM

@ Charlie re. hidden cams...

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 26January 23, 2013 8:20 PM

I don't towel dance but I'm not an exhibitionist either. I'm a grower, not a shower, so I'm self-conscious of my flaccid penis. I'm also fit-fat and a bit shy about my body. But I never go to any lengths to cover up; if someone is going to gawk at me there's not much I can do about it. It's not a big deal.

by Anonymousreply 27January 23, 2013 8:24 PM

The question must be asked about some of these buff young guys who are struggling so valiantly to hike their underwear up underneath the towel.

Do you think some of them are the same guys who, 40 years from now, will be ambling around the locker room buck-naked in the year 2053, with no compunction about displaying their wrinkled butts, fat bellies, floppy moobs and furry shoulders?

I ask because we have a few of these oldsters at my gym, we had a few of them at my last gym, and the gym before that.... and I wonder how modest they were when they were 25.

by Anonymousreply 28January 23, 2013 8:26 PM

I'm a hybrid at NYSC. I drop towel for 1-2 seconds at my locker and step into my underwear and pull it up quick, but I move swiftly in doing that and I don't walk around naked.

I answered No to the poll though, because "towel dance" to me implies changing clothes without removing the towel at all, i.e., a staunch refusal to go naked for even a fraction of a second. Is that right (the definition)?

by Anonymousreply 29January 23, 2013 8:34 PM

Hate this poll. Where's the "I have a home gym" selection?

by Anonymousreply 30January 23, 2013 9:09 PM

I wonder why Europeans and South Americans don't worry about gawkers? I wonder why 20 years ago in a NYC gym people did not worry about gawkers, or 50 years ago whether men at the YMCA (who all swam naked) worried about gawkers? In spas at ski resorts all over Switzerland, France, Austria, and Italy that I have been to, I never notice mixed populations of adults and children worrying about gawkers (most in the spa are naked.)

Wonder what is going on in the US?

I don't worry much about towel dancers and I sure have never worried about "gawkers". In fact, I rather worry that no one will notice my fabulous self anymore when naked (and I don't worry much about that either because I am happy to be alive and healthy.)

Really- it's all pretty silly- when I see some big gym rat putting his tighty whities on under a towel just so I try not to laugh. It makes me think of the poor nerd in gym class 40 years ago afraid to take his pants off- only these guys are hardly nerds, at least physically.

by Anonymousreply 31January 23, 2013 9:35 PM

r31, proves my point that it's always eldergays who complain about younger guys wearing towels.

They always talk about how 20-30 years ago this wasn't a problem. Well, if guys your age don't care about wearing towels then why don't you check them out instead? What you don't find people your own age attractive? It's like you think it's your right to see young flesh naked.

Seriously, why do you care so much if the 25 year old jock wears a towel or not?

by Anonymousreply 32January 23, 2013 9:44 PM

R32, almost everybody wears a towel- it's the little shimmy maneuver of putting on the panties under the towel, or more silly wrapping a towel around the waist and shimmying the panties down under the towel that is so amusing. It is interesting to wonder what in the US has has produced this behavioral change on the last 10 years or so? Dirty old men have been around much longer than that- as have rabid slutty young homos.

P.S. Barbra has a private trainer and dirty old gizmos are not turned on by a glance at her snatch I'm sure.

by Anonymousreply 33January 23, 2013 10:06 PM

I had no idea what it is until this thread. If someone is particularly modest and never exposes their crotch in a locker room, that's his choice. Why the fuck should I care?

by Anonymousreply 34January 23, 2013 10:12 PM

R32. It's not that people care so much; that's not the point of this thread. And the point is not to try and cut off the conversation by calling someone an 'eldergay' or whatever lese comes to mind.

This thread is not about clamoring to see someone's junk. It's about observations over the eyars and how attitudes on nudity have changed, along with the awkward gyrations of the "towel dance" that some guys go through that hardly ever happened with previous generations.

This thread is more about the motivations of the towel dancer, the changing views on nudity and how they differ in the U.S. from other countries.

If you can only comment by saying things such as "why do you care" or "only eldergays complain," then you're missing the point. The discussion is about the larger issue of nudity and the comfort level or lack thereof, how thiings have changed and why they've changed.

If someone comments about how things used to be different 10-20-30-40 years ago, it doesn't mean it's a complaint. It's a commentary.

by Anonymousreply 35January 23, 2013 10:47 PM

[quote] This thread is more about the motivations of the towel dancer, the changing views on nudity and how they differ in the U.S. from other countries.

We have a dozen threads on this shit right now. "Are you sex negative?" Why not worry about your own attitudes and be less of a control freak?

by Anonymousreply 36January 23, 2013 10:52 PM

R35, DL has had this EXACT conversation at least a dozen times.

Once you cover the basics, it's just hissing eldergays bitching because they can't leer at sexy young naked guys.

You know it, I know it.

by Anonymousreply 37January 23, 2013 10:53 PM

Maybe that's the case for you r35. But any time this subject comes up it's older guys complaining about how 30 years ago everyone walked around naked. Plus, go to any gym and tell me who is trolling the locker rooms. It's always old gay dudes. If they like you, they follow you around hoping you'll show them what you got. I never hear guys my age complain about this issues.

And are all of you that dense? You can't even begin to figure out why guys nowadays do this more often as opposed to 20 years ago? Or why sex-positive europeans are more likely to walk around naked than sex-negative Americans? Really? Is it that hard to figure out?

And yes, dirty old men have always been around but now people are more aware of them. Back in your day, the 60's or whatever, most straight didn't even think gays existed. Now they know they're everywhere, including the older perverted ones who like to troll gyms.

Of course, the eldergays here aren't going to admit it. Every time there's a thread about an eldergay having sex with a teen, you guys all come out to defend the eldergay.

It's like the Elmo thing. Most eldergays on here defended him claiming that teen boys are never hurt if an old guy sleeps with them, that they all want it in fact.

And why is it eldergays never want to date each other? They always complain about how dumb guys my age are, but they also throw themselves at us? Why are old gay guys always complaining about guys their age only wanting young guys? Eldergays have this obsession with young guys and it's pathetic.

The only older gay men I respect are the ones that date their equals. They may find me attractive but they're mature enough to know they are better off with someone their age.

by Anonymousreply 38January 23, 2013 11:05 PM

The eldergays who don't want to date each are locked in a idea of happiness where looks and youth are the only things that count, I suppose. We all live in that world when we're young, just it's taking gay culture longer to grow out of it in some quarters. There are plenty of gays settle into more conventional existences but there's also a ton of Peter Pan syndrome kicking around the gay community.

by Anonymousreply 39January 23, 2013 11:11 PM

The great irony of this thread is that the people who stop to stare at how a guy removes his towel to put on his underwear are the exact reason that the "towel dance" exists.

by Anonymousreply 40January 23, 2013 11:42 PM

[quote]Wonder what is going on in the US?

Body shame. Their silly claims of elder-gay stalkers are just baloney. If some 80-year-old looks, who cares. Let them look. Only someone with body shame would be concerned and it's passed down generation to generation in the U.S.

I've been to nude beaches in Brazil, Chile, and France where people in all kinds of shape are having a great time. The guys complaining about stalkers are probably just covering up for the fact that they've got mini-meat.

by Anonymousreply 41January 23, 2013 11:44 PM

I know exactly how you feel. I hate when I'm staring in a woman's window to watch her get undressed, and right before she does so, she closes her blinds.

by Anonymousreply 42January 23, 2013 11:45 PM

[quote]The great irony of this thread is that the people who stop to stare at how a guy removes his towel to put on his underwear are the exact reason that the "towel dance" exists.

Bullshit. You can't miss somebody doing the twists and turns it takes to put your fucking underwear on with a towel in the way.

by Anonymousreply 43January 23, 2013 11:48 PM

No, OP, hissing isn't meant as a joke. It's meant as a slam against "older" gay men. Eldergay is meant as an insult.

by Anonymousreply 44January 23, 2013 11:52 PM

I look at eldergays and hissing as satire. It amuses me and I don't take it as serious threat to anybody's dignity.

by Anonymousreply 45January 23, 2013 11:56 PM

Very well said, R38. Of course, it will fall on deaf ears.

by Anonymousreply 46January 24, 2013 12:31 AM

so what do you think of r46, r45? Not satire.

by Anonymousreply 47January 24, 2013 12:56 AM

If you can't see the humour in R46, R47, there's nothing I can do to help you. I see it as a silly play on the point. If you're this thinned skinned nothing I can say will help you out. If you're old and it hurts, welcome to the progression to the grave. It's the way life works. It's happening to me. I look to the time I'm in, not the time I've lost.

by Anonymousreply 48January 24, 2013 1:02 AM

Thanks, fellas!! I'm totally jacking it to this thread!!

by Anonymousreply 49January 24, 2013 3:06 AM

Oh Jesus, enough with the eldergays nonsense. Most of this towel dancing is sheer paranoia on the part of the guys doing it. With the proliferation of porn, exercise, fitness, the Internet and everybody striving for perfection, conversely the attitude about personal nudity became more conservative and paranoid particularly with cell phone cameras, etc.

The towel dancers shouldn't flatter themselves thinking that everyone wants them all the time. They would be doing the towel dance anyway.

by Anonymousreply 50January 24, 2013 3:16 AM

You "eldergay wounds" types are such delicate flowers. And, of course, you're the also the first to call someone a frau or a fattie.

by Anonymousreply 51January 24, 2013 3:21 AM

It's pretty clear the towel dancers have body issues. Either fit-fat and trying to hide their bodies or tinymeat which is basically an extension of the prior. None of that matters to me.

by Anonymousreply 52January 24, 2013 3:29 AM

[quote]Oh Jesus, enough with the eldergays nonsense. Most of this towel dancing is sheer paranoia on the part of the guys doing it.

"Paranoia" would suggest you're not going to stare at them. But if you're really not looking, why do you care if they do he twoel dance?

This is what I've never understood about these threads about the towel dance on DL (which pop up at least once a month, usually more often). There's no real possible rationale for whining about it (particularly not once a month!)... UNLESS you really want to stare at them in the locker room.

You all should just admit the real reason you ever post about this is because you're frustrated they won't let you look at them. You sound like hypocrites otherwise.

by Anonymousreply 53January 24, 2013 3:48 AM

Agreed R19. I'm so sick and tired of leering old men.

Isn't there enough naked flesh on the internet to stare at?

Thankfully my gym doesn't allow cell phones in locker rooms - but it's not that cruisy. Even though it is technically a "gay gym". Refreshing.

However, the other one down the street...

by Anonymousreply 54January 24, 2013 3:48 AM

Not everyone is dying to see the towel dancer naked. Many people are just making fun of them and criticizing on this thread because they ofetn look ridiculous...for the same reason that that anyone would get criticized for doing something that looked ridiculous.

Many of us who aren't towel dancers are ofetn just genuinely curious as to why the towel dancers feel compelled to do what they do. What's going on in their head? I've seen them in the lockerroom; everyone has. And this isn't about old trolls gawking at them. These towels dancers do their dance no matter who's around.

by Anonymousreply 55January 24, 2013 4:08 AM

[quote]Many people are just making fun of them and criticizing on this thread because they ofetn look ridiculous...for the same reason that that anyone would get criticized for doing something that looked ridiculous.

I could perhaps see that being a genuine possibility if we didn't have threads about this topic almost constantly.

No, the truth is you're sexually frustrated and you really want to stare at them.

by Anonymousreply 56January 24, 2013 4:16 AM

I blame the schools for not insisting on students taking showers after PE or playing sport. It's unhygienic and disgusting, but kids are no longer used to stripping down and showering like normal, well adjusted human beings. You don't get away with this shit in Europe and South America.

by Anonymousreply 57January 24, 2013 6:41 AM

[quote]Thankfully my gym doesn't allow cell phones in locker rooms - but it's not that cruisy. Even though it

GET OVER YoUrSELF!!!

You're just not That important, honey!

by Anonymousreply 58January 24, 2013 1:55 PM

I do not "stop and stare" at towel dancers. I do not stop and stare at anyone in the gym and I observe it done by old and young about once every 5 years. Rather I have noticed it. Sauna trolls are not necessarily old you know. In Equinox they are about 50/1 below 40. There are no more dirty old or young men in gyms now than there were 20 years ago. So the precious young hunks on this thread need not tremble in fear or revel in disgusts. When I was younger I used to get hit on in the gym, in bars, on the street, everywhere. I loved it- not always, but most of the time.

In fact in NYC I would venture to say there is far less sex going on in gyms than there was in the 1970s/80s. The West Side Y was like going to the baths (it was pretty exciting actually.)

As I have said before- I do not care whether you shimmy out of your underwear with a towel over you. (I wonder if they do that at home?) It's just a new behavior that I have noticed in the last 10 years that is, well, odd- and peculiar to the US.

by Anonymousreply 59January 24, 2013 2:44 PM

Tell us the real reason for your body shame. You obviously keep track of towel dance threads "which pop up at least once a month, usually more often." Are you so intent on blaming others for your body shame because you have a needle dick or mini dick? It's so easy to blame stalking eldergays for your body shame, but you know that's not the real reason for your towel dance.

by Anonymousreply 60January 24, 2013 3:13 PM

Perv at R60 needs new shtick, seriously.

by Anonymousreply 61January 24, 2013 3:17 PM

People like the OP and others on this thread is the reason clubs have begun removing saunas in mens' locker rooms and why guys in general are afraid to walk around nude.

Queens who go to the gym just to troll are huge in number and exist in every fucking gym in America and they're tiresome. I'm gay also and I grew up playing sports in high school. Being in a locker room was always really natural to me and while I see some beautiful guys, it was never a hard-on experience for me that way. But between the old men who go JUST for the purposes of hanging out in the sauna and trolling guys, and the weird queens who go hoping to pick somebody up or to snap photos or to cruise, it's become impossible for any guy not to consider covering up.

People like you need psychological counseling OP, not Datalounge polls.

by Anonymousreply 62January 24, 2013 3:21 PM

We've got another mini-dick at R61. A backyard pool with workout area and running on the beach is all that's needed to keep in shape so there's no need for a gym. Still it's funny to read at DL about all the towel dancers with body shame.

by Anonymousreply 63January 24, 2013 3:31 PM

How many gyms have you been kicked out of R63?

Some people never learn.

by Anonymousreply 64January 24, 2013 3:32 PM

whatever

by Anonymousreply 65January 24, 2013 3:52 PM

[quote]Some people never learn.

We can easily learn trolldar. Your yellow really lights up many threads and clearly demonstrates that you need some serious help. What makes you feel so inadequate? Were you picked on in school? Sorry, for calling out your mini dick. I guess it really hit home. Try to get some help, snookums.

by Anonymousreply 66January 24, 2013 3:53 PM

R62 - I've been to lots of gyms and lots of locker rooms in my life and I have yet to encounter all of these cruising queens and trolls with video cameras you speak of.

Locker rooms CAN be cruisy, yes. Any place with naked men will attract those interested in naked men. But I have never seen anyone behave outrageously or aggressively. Most gay men know that they're in an overwhelmingly hetero environment so if they're there to cruise they better be careful and discreet about it.

Straight men are generally oblivious to gay cruising.

Personally, I think it's a matter of youth and insecurity. Many young men are shy and insecure and not comfortable with their bodies, especially if they're skinny or fat or whatever. So they do the towel dance and keep their bits covered up. I very rarely see older men who are that modest. And I very rarely see really fit young men who are that modest. They know they look good and they already have the body confidence they need to go naked.

I was like that when I was in my 20s. But as I matured and grew more confident and comfortable with my body I lost those inhibitions. and so will they.

by Anonymousreply 67January 24, 2013 4:02 PM

Most of the hot dudes at my gym don't even go to the lockerroom these days. They come to the gym dressed to work out and leave in their workout clothes to go home to shower. A lot of dudes carry nylon bags on their backs so that contain towels, water/protein shakes, and another shirt. You see dudes carry these little pouch bags around on the gym floor so they never have to go to the lockerroom. Mostly older and flamboyant guys are in the lockerroom.

by Anonymousreply 68January 24, 2013 4:26 PM

Definitely not the case at most NYSCs during morning and lunch workout time for the day-job crowd. Locker room is full of men changing and most of us get naked for an instant; we all want to quick-shower before suiting up and going (back) to the office. To me it's no big deal, everyone is task oriented and minutes count. It's a momentary bonus if a really hot guy is stripping in front of me, but it's not central. Few guys bother using the sauna at these times, for same reason, it's all about ge in, do your workout, change/shower/dress, get out. I find NYSC to be more cruisy and trollish at night. I like the morning/lunch routine for this reason. Gay/straight we are all pretty much only there to do our workouts.

by Anonymousreply 70January 24, 2013 4:34 PM

r70, obviously weekday morning and lunchtime gym goers are less likely to avoid the lockerroom because they probably can't just go home after working out. At the same time, in the DC area and everywhere else I have lived, not many young dudes go to the gym in the morning or early afternoon. The hot young dudes work out in the evenings, late at night, or on weekends. Mornings are heavily older.

by Anonymousreply 71January 24, 2013 4:37 PM

I generally don't, but I have students at both gyms I have used in my area.

I don't put a towel on when they're not around, but a lot of young guys do it, and if one of them is toweling up in the locker room, I will too. I don't want to be THAT teacher -- if we end up in the showers at the same time, there's no point in covering up after. (We don't have stalls, just shared space with faucets.)

by Anonymousreply 72January 24, 2013 4:39 PM

You're *stalking* me, R66?

Well no surprise there.

Seems I was right on about your tendencies at the gym.

Are you also a registered sex offender?

by Anonymousreply 73January 24, 2013 4:54 PM

A lot of guys never go to the lockerrooms. They come dressed out to workout.

by Anonymousreply 74January 28, 2013 6:32 PM

I'm with R67, nice to see some sane posters on this thread. Not R62. I do not know of one club in NYC that has removed a sauna either and I have been a member of clubs in NYC since the mid 70s. In fact if a club does not have a steam room and sauna it is a strike against it. If you don't care, you won't notice anything R62. Like looking for people slowing you down as you walk down a crowded street- if you do care you will conclude that old trolls live in locker rooms. Suggest you get a grip.

by Anonymousreply 75January 28, 2013 7:18 PM

NYSC closed the steam room on the East 86th club after about a thousand complaints about stalking trolls.

I posed the question only because I was curious. Yeah, I have definitely noticed a modesty that is much different than what I grew up with and I wanted to understand the basis of it... whether it was an old troll problem, a hidden cam problem, or anything else. You may not I did not offer any point of view on the question in the OP, just the question with some possible explanations.

Personally I get tired of the gym as bat house.

So why not take your predisposition to make assumptions and convert them into anger and get some psychological counselling yourself?

by Anonymousreply 81January 29, 2013 4:31 PM

I'm in LA and it depends on the gym. I think that most of the guys who towel dance are lockerroom newbies. I've noticed a couple of guys who used to do that now, don't give a fuck anymore. There are a lot of hot guys in their 20s-50s who frequent the gym I go to regularly. I've seen quite a few of these guys remove their clothes with no shame and take showers. One of the other locations I go to is full of hot guys on the workout floor, but not many of them in the lockerroom. Unfortunately, the lockerroom seems to be full of the most decrepit old men who linger around nude for long periods of time. Not necessarily gay men, just geriatric. One of my other locations was located below an office building and (before people starting getting laid off) the lockerroom was loaded with romping naked daddies and businessmen on their lunch hour. So here in L.A. is varies from gym to gym. I must admit it is pretty hot to see a good-looking guy working out on the floor, then minutes later getting naked in the lockerroom.

by Anonymousreply 82January 29, 2013 9:32 PM

Men who are in decent shape and well-hung, don't need to towel dance. The "eldergay watching me" excuse is from guys with mini dicks.

by Anonymousreply 83January 30, 2013 7:08 PM

For the life of me, I don't get why eldergay trolls are so obsessed with this topic.

by Anonymousreply 84January 30, 2013 7:29 PM

It is a fact that quite a few straight guys are turned on having a gay man check them out in the locker room or look at their dicks at the urinal. Women don't appreciate a man's body and manliness the way a gay man will.

by Anonymousreply 85January 30, 2013 8:23 PM

I also have noticed an unusual phenomenon in my gym -- guys that I assume are Muslim, refuse to shower nude, just in a pair of underwear. They put on a towel, and change the wet underwear to a dry pair.

What is this about?

by Anonymousreply 86January 30, 2013 8:27 PM

I recently heard that there are some Muslim sects where men are required to shave their pubes. Has anyone else heard this?

by Anonymousreply 87January 30, 2013 8:39 PM

R85 bullshit! If a dude is straight then there is no fucking way that he's turned on by creepy older gays with sagging balls leering at them. That's why they "towel dance" to begin with, the whole thing creeps them out and repulses them.

Get over your straight guy obsession dataloungers!

by Anonymousreply 88January 30, 2013 8:59 PM

R88 You're right. They're only turned on by the younger, better-looking guys with fit bodies. Towel dancing is usually done by guys who are insecure about their sexuality and the size of their penis.

by Anonymousreply 89January 30, 2013 10:11 PM

I was talking to a guy who has been in prison the last quarter century (and remains there). Most guys there always shower in their underwear.

by Anonymousreply 90January 30, 2013 10:32 PM

R90, I'm sure they only do that because they're insecure about their bodies and the size of their dicks.

[quote] Hissing Eldergay Leering Like A Meercat In The Locker Room

LOL at this!

by Anonymousreply 92January 30, 2013 10:55 PM

No, I think it's stupid.

Also, I've got a great body and a big dick and I don't give a shit who sees it.

I don't mind getting looks. When they stop looking, I'll be upset.

by Anonymousreply 93January 31, 2013 12:58 AM

Like R93, I kind of like showing off, too. I'm not too big nor too small but I look younger than I am (red hair tends to do that to some folks perceptions?)

I don't mind looks or even appreciative comments from time to time.

I'm also not afraid of a confrontation and am pretty clear about boundaries. No means no and if someone is persistent I confront them about it.

Too many people ignore when it happens and expect the person to go away if ignored. I very clearly and loudly say, No Thank You.

by Anonymousreply 94January 31, 2013 1:02 AM

R89 no a straight guy isn't turned on by ANY GUY looking at and objectifying their body.

Most are horrified by it.

by Anonymousreply 95January 31, 2013 1:20 AM

People who parade around the locker naked are disturbing. No one wants to see you naked. People roll their eyes and think you are a creep when you do it. At the same time, you don't have a right to see other people naked at the gym. Mind your business or you will have a reputation as a perv. This why so many dudes avoid even going into the lockerroom.

by Anonymousreply 96January 31, 2013 2:09 PM

If any guy, straight or gay, did not want people to look at their bodies they would not even bother going to the gym. Men love physical admiration no matter what their sexual orientation is. And though they won't admit it, a straight man will size up other guys in the locker room and at the urinals. It's human nature. Those who react outwardly repulsed by male nudity are insecure with their own bodies and/or sexuality.

by Anonymousreply 97February 1, 2013 3:17 PM

Here we go again with delusions.

Straight men want WOMEN checking them out (preferably hot), they don't want some old saggy balls over weight naked creepy gay dude giving themm doe eyed glances and winking at them.

Some straight men don't even like fat unattractive WOMEN sizing them up and chasing after them, let alone dudes.

by Anonymousreply 98February 1, 2013 3:37 PM

Men who towel dance are just sadly repressed. I just think it's funny that they think they have something different from everybody else. They must've had a difficult time in high school.

by Anonymousreply 99February 1, 2013 3:50 PM

I come dressed to work out and leave in my clothes to take a shower. Most younger guys at my gym do they same and wear little nylon back packs on the gym floor with their clothes and supplements so they don't even have to go to the locker room.

by Anonymousreply 100March 4, 2013 1:33 PM

I never understood the towel dance, other than the fact that the dude is micro-meat.

by Anonymousreply 101March 4, 2013 1:37 PM

r101, perhaps you don't understand because you are a voyeur peering at people in the lockerroom, whereas most guys are not and have a strong sense of modesty and privacy.

by Anonymousreply 102March 4, 2013 1:41 PM

You're a paranoid person, r102. Childhood trauma?

Realize; I don't give a flying fuck about your silly cock, and nobody else does either. Grow up. Act like a man, not some paranoid child.

by Anonymousreply 103March 4, 2013 2:08 PM

[quote]I come dressed to work out and leave in my clothes to take a shower. Most younger guys at my gym do they same and wear little nylon back packs on the gym floor with their clothes and supplements so they don't even have to go to the locker room.

Depends on the gym, but mine (a college campus facility) doesn't allow members to bring gym bags to the workout areas. That's what lockerooms are for.

Also, I work out at lunch time so everyone there at that time showers because they too have to go back to work or class or whatever.

Honestly, I think some of you are dramatically overstating the "outrage" over gym cruising.

by Anonymousreply 104March 4, 2013 2:26 PM

r103, you do realize my perspective on this is much more mainstream and widespread than yours?

by Anonymousreply 105March 4, 2013 2:27 PM

Actually r105, it's not.

I have worked out at gyms all over the country for the past fifteen years. Equinox, NYSC, Crunch, 24 Hr. Fitness. The towel dance happens, yes, but not to the hysterical extent discussed on this board. I have, however, never seen guys carrying around little nylon bags. That's ridiculous. Of course many people come dressed to work out if they live near their gym. I frequently do so myself unless it's the middle of the day and I'm working.

You're a particularly sad case, as evidenced by your other posts in this thread. You're ashamed and embarrassed. Also, you're drawing more attention to yourself with this bizarre behavior. My suggestion, just workout at home. You're far too strange to be working out in public areas.

by Anonymousreply 106March 4, 2013 2:44 PM

The towel dance is for men with mini-dicks.

by Anonymousreply 107March 4, 2013 2:47 PM

A lot of gyms used to ban members from bringing bags on the gym floor, but since jock and hipster culture today embraces the practice, it seems most gyms have relented and allow guys to bring bags on the floor so they don't have to go to the lockerroom at all.

by Anonymousreply 108March 19, 2013 5:00 PM

r106, you live in NYC, which is not real, middle America. No wonder you don't know how most Americans live.

by Anonymousreply 109March 19, 2013 5:01 PM

Hairless old fool in gym bathroom today, waiting, poised as if in suspended animation, to be faux-surprsed getting caught en route into the shower stall. He moved like Steve Austin, the Six Million Dollar Man - in key posed slow motion, flexing, enacting his lonesome public ritual

by Anonymousreply 115April 11, 2013 9:29 PM

No, that's just silly. But once I dated a "chorus boy" who'd been in three lines and showed me a step. If some old troll or goofy guy is being bothersome, RARELY, I might do a little "show". It's hard to be serious about something trivial. Gyms have nudity. No big deal.

by Anonymousreply 116April 11, 2013 9:31 PM

Yes, I towel dance. I do the dance of the 7 towels. I whirl around like the excited, sex-crazed man-lovin' Gay that I am, tearing off each towel until the grand finale when I expose my nekkid bod for all the gym bunnies to worship and adore. Fully erect, I then hop to the steam room for the HOT ACTION.

by Anonymousreply 117April 11, 2013 9:37 PM

I come dressed out to work out so I don't have to even go to the lockerroom at all, like a lot of guys.

by Anonymousreply 118April 15, 2013 7:05 PM

I admit I do it, but not for the reasons one may think. My gym has private shower stalls with an enclosed changing area. No one else gets bareass in the locker room, so for me to do so would sort of look out of place.

by Anonymousreply 119April 15, 2013 7:09 PM

I do the dance of the seven veils.

by Anonymousreply 122April 18, 2013 10:24 PM

What beach, what state?

by Anonymousreply 123April 19, 2013 2:02 PM

People at beaches are already showing more skin and wearing less clothes than those in a gym, so just peeling off a swimsuit is no big stretch.

by Anonymousreply 124April 19, 2013 2:40 PM

A lot of guys wear their swimsuits under their clothes to the beach.

Only a queer would cover himself up.

by Anonymousreply 129May 1, 2013 3:56 AM

Everyone should do the towel dance at the gym. There's probably some pervert secretly recording everyone.

by Anonymousreply 133May 1, 2013 4:36 AM

LOL at 'the hissing years'.

I think guys who are embarrassed to that extreme are sad. I don't see many do the towel dance, but occasionally you do see it. They just seem so extremely self-conscious. I can't imagine that they'd be good in the sack if they're that uptight about their bodies.

by Anonymousreply 134May 1, 2013 4:40 AM

[quote]There's probably some pervert secretly recording everyone.

probably not, just get over yourself, you're actually not that interesting to record.

by Anonymousreply 135May 1, 2013 4:42 AM

Modesty is not the same as embarrassment.

by Anonymousreply 136May 1, 2013 2:22 PM

Most of the people naked in the lockerroom should be embarrassed. If they only knew what people thought of them they would be.

by Anonymousreply 137May 1, 2013 2:23 PM

My gym hosts the local swim team practices. I'll see groups of young swimmers come and leave together and they do go through all sorts of acrobats to change with one hand under their towel while the other holds it up. I guess there is more modesty at that age when you are among your peers.

As for mostly everyone else, they will briefly be naked at their locker when in transition from towel to clothing. I see only a few strutting naked and it does seem intentional.

I'll admit it….I like to see the guys naked. WTF, I am attracted to men. Do I ogle them or cruise them there?….no. It's just creepy and not the place.

Look at basketball players' shorts or men in speedos on the beach in footage from the 70s (the hissing years?). And the board shorts now that hang down to the knees. You see the prudery and internalized homophobia that has grown since the Reagan years. Women are still exposed for straight eyes to feast on but no, no, no, real men only look, they are not to be looked at... by Anonymousreply 164September 23, 2014 3:44 PM

The younger gays didn't have to take a shower (naked) and change in front of others. I could care if someone sees me naked. I have performed naked on stage. I have been photographed naked and appeared in at least one magazine. I modeled for life drawing classes in college. It's just a body. And I could always take care of myself in those situations.

by Anonymousreply 170October 28, 2014 5:37 PM

I take meds that make my penis really shrink. When I am off the meds I am fine, but for now I must take them. It's embarrassing to have a one inch penis in the locker room and showers. Sometimes I say "fuck it", other times I change/shower at home. For right now, it is what it is.

People in West Africa. A friend who worked there with me just mentioned it the other day. When people want to warn someone to be careful or that there's danger, they hiss. It's against the law to take pictures in that area. We had heard in advance about the hissing possibilities in those countries.

I find it really annoying that any man feels uncomfortable being naked for just a few seconds. Do they really think that they are so vulnerable that another man would grab it and suck it? A penis is just a penis. I think it's either about body shame or homophobia. Also, it looks so awkward. Let it all hang out!

They come to gym dressed to workout with little nylon jockbro bags that they carry around while working out. I have noticed the same at many gyms. The lockerroom is pretty much the domain of creepy older dudes or young feminine or creepy guys. Few people undress without a towel over them, and the ones who do are older or unattractive.

And I've had a couple of them tell me it was because they didn't like getting stared at, but mostly because they just found it to be easier and more pleasant to shower at home.

I used to go into the locker room to stash my coat if it was cold out, but now I just leave it in the car and make the dash from the parking lot. Saves a lot of time not having to deal with a lock and find an open locker.

by Anonymousreply 190December 23, 2014 2:31 PM

Coming to and leaving the gym dressed to workout is the norm today. It is part of the jock dude to culture. And you must wear a little drawstring Nike backpack that you carry around on the gym floor. It is part of brah culture.

by Anonymousreply 191December 23, 2014 3:17 PM

I happen to like showering at the gym, and sometimes sitting in the steam or sauna. I just view it as kind of pampering myself--even if it's only showering. And I don't like getting home and having to shower; that's a pain in the ass. I don't want to go home and feel like I have to finish up something that I should have done at the gym.

While I'm at the gym, I do the things you normally would do at the gym--and that includes showering. And I don't worry about people staring at me. I don't do the towel dance. When I see another naked guy or he sees me, BFD. This is also part of the culture.

This practice of always wearing your gym clothes and never entering the locker room is strictly paranoid behavior.

by Anonymousreply 192December 23, 2014 6:30 PM

Yes.

At the drop of a corpse.

by Anonymousreply 193December 23, 2014 6:37 PM

[quote]Truth Fairy obviously has body shame.

There's absolutely no indication of that anywhere.

You're just saying that as a cheap shot to discredit someone you disagree with.

by Anonymousreply 194December 23, 2014 6:39 PM

At my all dudes middle/high school all the jocks loved to get naked with each other and strut their stuff. It was all highly homoerotic but in an overtly (even aggressively) heterosexual way. Figure that one out.

by Anonymousreply 195December 24, 2014 12:48 AM

Oh, and I should also add that the school eventually put stalls in the big gang shower because of a sexual harassment incident. Some kids took the locker room horseplay way too far and a finger ended up in an asshole. Not even kidding. Kids pissed on each other in the shower all they wanted, but that crossed the line.

by Anonymousreply 196December 24, 2014 1:06 AM

My gym has ensuites, hence why I chose it

by Anonymousreply 197December 24, 2014 1:10 AM

Which gym is that 197. I would join in minute. I hate the gays staring at me and my junk

by Anonymousreply 198December 24, 2014 1:26 AM

my gym has nude days

by Anonymousreply 199December 24, 2014 1:33 AM

[quote]At my all dudes middle/high school all the jocks loved to get naked with each other and strut their stuff. It was all highly homoerotic but in an overtly (even aggressively) heterosexual way. Figure that one out.

I did: it never happened.

by Anonymousreply 200December 24, 2014 1:34 AM

That stupid towel dance is the most ridiculously awkward move to try and accomplish. I refuse to do that. And, I'm naked for all of about four seconds. If some guy in the locker room can't deal with that it is not my problem.

by Anonymousreply 201December 24, 2014 1:38 AM

r198 it's anytime fitness, this is the one in Australia though, so I don't know what the ones in the US like.

by Anonymousreply 202December 24, 2014 1:40 AM

R201, yup, the towel dance draws FAR more attention that the momentary nudity of taking off street gear and putting on workout clothes.

by Anonymousreply 203December 24, 2014 2:02 AM

[quote] Who showers at the gym?

People with jobs.

[quote]my gym has nude days

R199. What gym? Where? How many guys go nude? What is the age range? Is nudity mandatory on nude days?

by Anonymousreply 205December 24, 2014 3:26 AM

Are the towel dance and/or wearing your gym clothes to the gym and never showering at the gym an American paranoid phenomenon, or has this homophobic nonsense swept other countries?

by Anonymousreply 206December 24, 2014 3:55 AM

Guys try to change discreetly if at all these days

by Anonymousreply 207December 24, 2014 4:12 AM

Hardly anyone at my gym or anyone my age showers at the gym. It's just easier and more comfortable to shower in my own bathroom. So I'm sweaty in the car on the way home.

R192 is over 50 and likes to shower at the gym so he can keep his bathroom spotless. Showering at home would mess up the whole bathroom.

by Anonymousreply 208December 24, 2014 4:19 AM

r200: Might sound like a fantasy but it happened for sure. I think if you're familiar with high school sports you'd know that nudity is de rigeur in locker rooms, especially at an all-boys school with group showers. Getting naked in front of everyone was something you just did as a matter of course, so it had that rite of passage aspect. And I knew a lot of dudes who would strut around with their dick swinging just because they could do it.

It's an old prestigious private school in MA with a weird/potent culture of masculinity. Some Freudian might tell you that the phallus was idolized.

But what I'm saying is that it was all militantly heterosexual. Pretty much a litmus test of masculinity. No hard dicks tolerated, which caused me some trouble.

I saw a guy towel dance at a bath house last week.

It seemed to me the one place all those moves were quite unnecessary.

by Anonymousreply 211January 13, 2015 10:51 PM

One guy does a towel dance, another doesn't:

There is a guy at my gym, handsome, hot, I'm guessing mid-30s. Thought there was a chance he could be gay because he's so metrosexual, but have since found out he has a wife and a couple of kids. Anyway, he always towel dances even though his workout buddy just bares it all.

Today, as he was undressing for the showers, he's holding his towel in front of him as he hooks his thumbs into his underwear waistband. After dropping his briefs to his ankles, he loses the grip of his towel in one hand, so it falls to the side, being held up only by his other hand. I got a nice two second glimpse of a fat cock, probably a good 3.0 to 3.5 inches flaccid. A perfectly nice dick, he shouldn't keep that beauty hidden.

by Anonymousreply 213May 14, 2015 10:32 PM

He will if you're there

by Anonymousreply 214May 14, 2015 10:35 PM

No, I don't stare. It was pure luck that I caught what I did.

by Anonymousreply 215May 14, 2015 10:43 PM

Since when do young studs guys towel dance because there are old trolls are around?

by Anonymousreply 216May 14, 2015 10:53 PM

No but I sneak glances at str8 meat in the shower.

by Anonymousreply 217May 14, 2015 10:55 PM

I only towel dance when the old guys are so blatantly obvious with their perving. If no one is staring, then I don't think about it. Never feed a troll, it just rewards their behavior.

by Anonymousreply 218May 15, 2015 4:52 PM

I don't change at gym

by Anonymousreply 219September 3, 2015 1:47 PM

Lol!

by Anonymousreply 220January 27, 2016 7:36 PM

Grow a pair. If someone is staring at you, stare back. If they continue to stare, ask them "What the fuck are you staring at?"

Such precious little flowers in here. "He's looking at me! I'll hide behind this towel, that'll show him!"

by Anonymousreply 221January 27, 2016 7:51 PM

Hmmm

by Anonymousreply 222April 17, 2016 1:15 PM

Hot dudes rarely even go to the lockeroom anymore. Most come dressed to work out and go home to shower. Some Put their hoodies in on cubby holes on the gym floor or small lockers on the gym floor. They deliberately avoid the lockerrooms, especially the hot gym jock bros

by Anonymousreply 223March 5, 2019 2:29 AM

EWWW. Public gyms are so fucking declassè. Get a private gym for God's sake.

by Anonymousreply 224March 5, 2019 2:36 AM

The cool kids don’t go into the lockerroom, only the creeps and old guys

by Anonymousreply 225March 5, 2019 2:38 AM

[quote]r22 it's pretty odd behavior. It is also altogether absent in Europe and South America as I said

Move there, if you prefer their customs.

by Anonymousreply 226March 5, 2019 3:14 AM

It's nice to know that while nearly 50% of Dataloungers are middle-aged or older, most of them enjoy strutting around proudly in the altogether in the locker room... no doubt to the joy of younger gymgoers.

by Anonymousreply 227March 5, 2019 3:44 AM

There are very few young men in public gym lockerrooms

by Anonymousreply 228March 5, 2019 11:33 AM

A lot of dudes don’t even go the restroom in lockerrooms anymore. Most gyms have restrooms out on the gym floor so patrons don’t have to go the lockerroom at all.

by Anonymousreply 229March 5, 2019 11:34 AM

What’s poppin
