So there's a show on NATGEO called "Drugged"

And the last episode had a drunk (severe drunk, not too old) on it. I think the premise is they go to the doctor for tests and show what their drug of choice is doing to their body. The guy, Ryan, went in for testing and had pancreatitis and a swollen liver plus an old hip injury which wouldn't heal b/c he drank so much. So he goes into rehab and they (spoiler alert) announce "Ryan died 17 days into rehab" no explanation as to why. Did anyone see this? Is there a discussion somewhere else saying what happened? Suicide? Sneak out and binge to death? Liver failure? The facility fuck up on the withdrawal treatment? What?

by Anonymousreply 55June 28, 2018 3:53 PM

Nobody watched it?

by Anonymousreply 1January 1, 2013 8:07 PM

I would have if I'd known about it

by Anonymousreply 2January 1, 2013 8:12 PM

I would also like to know what happened. It was the weirdest thing ever. He seemed to have Huntington's or something. Was that addressed?

by Anonymousreply 3January 2, 2013 4:43 PM

Just goes to show that rehab is more dangerous than drugs.

by Anonymousreply 4January 2, 2013 6:24 PM

ryan should have never been sent to rehab - ever. Because of his severe addiction, he should have been hospitalized for detox. It seems they put him in a room and a bed and proceeded with "therapy". No wonder he died in 17 days. I've yet to hear he was hospitalized, only sent to a treatment center in San Diego. Huge fail!!

by Anonymousreply 5January 6, 2013 2:06 PM

So even NATGEO is going the reality tv route nowadays s any cable channel safe?

by Anonymousreply 6January 6, 2013 2:24 PM

Junkies are cheap and don't demand residuals, R6.

Expect "Guess What I have in my pocket" to become a real show within the next five years. People will tune in.

"She's fat; I'm guessing a ham sandwich, Bob!"

"Bonus round for $40: Mayo, Whip, or Mustard?"

by Anonymousreply 7January 6, 2013 2:29 PM

Is the show online anywhere? It doesn't appear to be OnDemand, at least not on my cable provider.

by Anonymousreply 8January 6, 2013 3:06 PM

I'm still very curious as to what happened to Ryan. Also, it seemed like his grandpa was missing from the scattering of the ashes. Maybe b/c they climbed up into the hills but it seemed weird since he lived with his grandpa who seemed like a sweet guy.

by Anonymousreply 9January 6, 2013 3:14 PM

Did he have pancreatitis? Pancreatitis can be deadly if not treated in a timely fashion. If he had recurrent bouts of it, it's very possible that his sudden detox caused another flare-up.

I am only guessing, of course. But that's a real danger.

by Anonymousreply 10January 6, 2013 10:50 PM

Looks like his full name was Ryan Rogers. Also seems that he was in a rehab facility in San Diego.

Someone get to searching for obituaries. I'm googling...

Looks like the rehab fucked up and he had a heart attack. Here's the ex-girlfriend's FB. He was really cute. So was she. Looks like HS sweethearts. She said he'd only been drinking heavily for 5 years. Scary.

People willingly ignore that sometimes the cure, the medicine, or the path to a healthier living can kill you in some rare cases. Otherwise people would use it as an excuse not to change detrimental (mental) health issues that crept into their lives.

by Anonymousreply 14January 19, 2013 10:00 AM

That's racist the delicate word for that is African American.

by Anonymousreply 15January 19, 2013 10:05 AM

This is sounding like the show f-ed up. Throw the guy in Rehab and film it. No clues at all about drug addiction, the actual point of their show.

What, they never heard of Methadone Clinics?

For anyone interested, they replay this on natgeo all the time. I am a recovering alcoholic and this show pretty much saved my life. As far as rehab being worse than the disease, I don't feel that's the case. He was medically detoxed but the damage was done. They said repeatedly during the show that they didn't know how much time he had left. There is a chance that he could have kept going but no one can know for sure if he would have died on that particular day continuing to drink.

by Anonymousreply 18February 3, 2013 10:49 PM

This story will always have a place in my heart and life. Remember I am only 1 drink away from being "Ryan"

by Anonymousreply 19February 8, 2013 1:02 AM

i was upset to find out ryan died,i want to know the story how did he die/bet they fucked up at rehad ,he should of been put stright into hospital

by Anonymousreply 20February 19, 2013 1:29 AM

Ryan died of Alcoholism. He had a heart attack 17 days into rehab. As it painfully showed in the episode his body was shutting down and deteriorating. I am an alcoholic, as others have stated his story saves lives. I went and detoxed in a rehab clinic. Most clinics are also hospitals. The sad fact is that many people die of this disease. The body will die with and with out the drug. That is the way it happens. While I was in rehab, many people struggled with detox, some people never recovered.

by Anonymousreply 21February 19, 2013 2:05 PM

Does anyone know how old he was? I have a close friend who has been drinking heavily since her mother died almost five years ago. She will be thirty this year. I'm worried about her and she has tried to stop many times unsuccessfully.

by Anonymousreply 22February 19, 2013 2:13 PM

Hi I am from holland and have seen this and I only can think about him!!I don't understand it!they should haved help him in the beginning not after 3 years! His grandad was right!his mother and ex not!!he would have live longer but because off them he is not!!

x shirls

by Anonymousreply 23February 19, 2013 8:19 PM

I saw this right now, on NG channel in Portugal. Ryan was 28 years old. May he rest in peace and may he be an example to say no to alcohol abuse.

by Anonymousreply 24February 19, 2013 10:06 PM

I used to watch a show starring a coroner, Dr G. Is that show still on? I'm in a different cable zone than when I watched it. I remember she did an autopsy on an African American woman who was a binge drinker. Dr G said binge drinkers had worse liver/pancreatic problems than "regular" alcoholics because they would bombard their system with a lot of liquor all at once.

by Anonymousreply 25February 19, 2013 10:26 PM

i just saw the episode in Kenya. what really happened at the rehab? dont they have medical doctors and heart specialists on site? seemed like such a great ending and light at the end of the tunnel. then he dies. so bad. rip ryan. u were a great guy.

I'm wondering if the "rehab" facility was Narconon or some other "rehab" with ties to Scientology.

by Anonymousreply 27May 3, 2013 10:41 PM

Women typically excuse alcoholic and convence themselfs the situation is not that bad. I saw it happen with my brother, when he was drunk my mother and his gf use to ignore the fact he was drunk, they didn't even mentioned it, especially close to him and if i started to tell him that his condition was noticeble and that he was not fooling any one, they tried to change the topic...i don't know exactly why this happens but womens logic is somehow different from most men and they think they are protecting but in reallity they are killing them. That's why Ryan was a doomed, rehab after 5 years of intense drinking, 1.5 litres of vodka per day!? Broken hip!? Lol its ridiculous he shoulda been in rehab 5 years ago, not after years of speating blood. Greetings from Portugal. Excuse my english

by Anonymousreply 28November 26, 2013 2:16 AM

It's odd that the two most dangerous drugs to withdraw from are legal ones: alcohol and benzodiazepines. Surely there should have been acute medical care available for his detoxification. Beyond the simplistic 'drugs are bad' mantra, people should properly educate themselves about the intoxicants they indulge in.

by Anonymousreply 29November 26, 2013 2:33 AM

Booze is murder on the heart. Lots of alcoholics die young of heart attacks and that's what happened to Ryan and a lot of other alcoholics. You only hear about liver damage but it's also terrible for your heart.

by Anonymousreply 30November 26, 2013 2:46 AM

Worked for NATGEO as a paid actor for one of their "reality comedy" series. It's called cheap programming.

by Anonymousreply 31November 26, 2013 3:32 AM

That's ridiculous Filipe. Ryan was responsible for his own life, he was 28 yrs old not 8. He has been drinking heavily for 5 years, long after his mother had control over him. And what was she supposed to do? Stand between him and the vodka bottle? Have you tried to stop an alcoholic from getting to the alcohol? I have and it was futile. They lie, they're sneaky, they will stop talking to you and at times will disappear for days at a time. I'm really sorry that Ryan died but it is not the fault of "women" or anyone else. Ryan's addiction killed Ryan.

by Anonymousreply 32November 26, 2013 3:42 AM

Oh and Ryan clearlly had some kind of mental disorder, most likelly esquisophrenia because he alucinated even sober. Pay attention to the part when he's drinking vodka in the psyquiatric clinic and he keeps telling to the mirror " I know, I know, I know".

by Anonymousreply 33November 26, 2013 9:48 AM

[quote] Hi I am from holland and have seen this and I only can think about him!!I don't understand it!they should haved help him in the beginning not after 3 years!

He didn't want help in the beginning. Rehab won't work if a person doesn't want to go or they are forced to go.

[quote] what really happened at the rehab? dont they have medical doctors and heart specialists on site? seemed like such a great ending and light at the end of the tunnel. then he dies

They have doctors and nurses. They don't have cardiologists. It's a mental health facility. Regular hospitals don't have a cardiologist on staff 24 hours a day.

You're all acting like a heart attack is something that everyone survives and the only people who die are people who were mistreated by medical staff. That's not true. People die all the time from heart attacks. They die from heart attacks in cardiology units in hospitals with the best care. This guy's system was shutting down. He had too much damage to his heart. In all probability, nothing would have saved him. When your organs are shutting down, they're shutting down. It's tragic, but this was a result of years and years of heavy drinking. Don't try to blame anyone else

by Anonymousreply 34November 26, 2013 4:08 PM

How come there are no fucking housecleaning addicts out there? It's always the standard boozehounds and druggies. How boring.

Really people, come up with some new ideas regarding addictions, something even your mother could be proud of. I know a dude who's addicted to school. He's old now, but he already enrolled yet again for classes.

by Anonymousreply 35November 26, 2013 4:24 PM

[quote] I know a dude who's addicted to school. He's old now, but he already enrolled yet again for classes.

He's not addicted to school, he's avoiding life.

by Anonymousreply 36November 26, 2013 4:40 PM

There are people addicted to housecleaning, r35. We usually call them obsessive-compulsive. People can be addicted to all sorts of things, even half-assed attempts at humour (have you sought help?).

by Anonymousreply 37November 29, 2013 6:12 AM

Probably Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome. Symptoms of Wernicke encephalopathy include: confusion and loss of mental activity that can progress to coma and death.

by Anonymousreply 38December 24, 2013 12:36 AM

I have never seen this show, but I drink heavily. I had my liver tested a couple of years ago, and it was fine. I never even considered that my heart could be affected. Wtf???! I would go to rehab, but I need to work. I can't take weeks off, plus I need to care for my elderly mother.

by Anonymousreply 39December 24, 2013 12:47 AM

I saw this episode online. Ryan, may he rest in peace, was so ill. I've never seen such an extreme case of alcoholism. The psychiatrist that evaluated him seemed certain that Ryan did not exhibit schizophrenic symptoms.

This reminded me of the Intervention episode about the tanning bed business owner that refused cancer treatment. The damage done to his body was so far along that recovery from the addiction just seemed impossible.

by Anonymousreply 40December 24, 2013 5:53 AM

R39 here. Campral

by Anonymousreply 41December 24, 2013 6:13 AM

This is how alcohol kills after you go off of it: extreme high blood pressure for days or weeks, causing stroke, heart failure, organ damage or even dehydration related death (because the patient can't get his attention off of the pain long enough to eat or drink water).

Depressants like alcohol are vasorelaxers which initially lower blood pressure. That is, it relaxes the subtle smooth muscles which do include blood vessels.

If you drink alcohol or take depressants, your body has to adjust the tone of smooth muscles in order to keep blood pressure high enough to get blood circulating to your brain, defying gravity and so on. If you body didn't adjust to depressant drugs, your blood would pool and you would lose consciousness.

So by the time an alcohol addiction is physical (a person gets withdrawal tremors), you can't go cold turkey because you will suffer extreme fatal high blood pressure for days or weeks without the antagonistic presence of a depressant. Gradual weaning would be best.

If I'm not mistaken, there is a drug that can help with coming off of alcohol.

I first saw that "High on Alcohol" PBS video earlier this year.

This was probably the saddest thing I have ever watched no joke . the guy seemed like such a nice and friendly person is was such a shame to find out he died.

Yes, and so young.

They should show this high school health classes.

by Anonymousreply 44January 30, 2014 4:05 AM

R39,

There are outpatient programs where you go to group therapy in the evenings. This is not alnon: it's run through a hospital detox program. I had a friend who attended at night and lunchtime.

by Anonymousreply 45January 30, 2014 4:18 AM

I know, I watched it last night, and it was jacked up. He should've been fine if they gave him a medical detox. So what happened? Did he have a seizure, did he relapse? Nice way to leave the show hanging. Very disappointed. For a true addict, that was a very irresponsible show. It shows them to continue to drink because there is no hope, however there is.

by Anonymousreply 46January 30, 2014 4:14 PM

He was very ill going into detox. Damage had already been done to his internal organs.

I don't feel it was irresponsible on the shows part - it showed how damaging alcohol can be on your body. Unlike the show "Intervention", it was not shame-based and assigning blame of addiction on a person or situation. It allowed the patient to decide for themselves on weather to seek treatment based on medical advice.

by Anonymousreply 47January 30, 2014 4:44 PM

I watched this too. Heart breaking. Last year I was alcohol dependent (built up over many years of abuse) and finally decided to help myself. I was in a medical detox facility for six days before a went to inpatient rehab for 30 days. I was on anti-seizure meds for a total of 8 weeks, Ativan for the first two weeks and blood pressure monitored 3 times a day. While I was in rehab two people were taken out due to seizures. It's very scary and needs to be closely monitored.

I am extremely lucky. Sober, happy, a new life. After extensive medical testing I have very, very little damage to my body (liver). I am extremely fortunate that after abusing alcohol for 15 years, a serious drunk for the last 4 of those years that I am not nearly dead.

You can stop drinking, but only if YOU want to. And even then, it may be too late. Many do not need or require detox and rehab, but why risk not doing it? I know it saved my life.

by Anonymousreply 48February 1, 2014 1:21 PM

Some are saying it was a heart attack. If this is true, I can see why. He body was adapted to the alcohol. He would have been better off tapering off at home over and period of a month or so using beer. The hard liquor was a bad idea. Also, detox facilities are a bad idea when you're that addicted. They will eventually take you off the benzos and that is when the trouble probably begin for Ryan. He also smoked which raises blood pressure even more. Damn, I wish I could have met this guy before going there to tell him how to use beer for tapering. It works, i've done it many times.

by Anonymousreply 49February 6, 2014 12:54 AM

Didnt seem realistic that family supported their habbit. Then get a free trip to rehab.

by Anonymousreply 50October 8, 2014 9:31 AM

Alcohol is the most risky addiction to withdraw from because it can be deadly. His body is so immune to those alcohol levels so a drastic change can kill him.

by Anonymousreply 51October 8, 2014 3:01 PM

Watched this yesterday. as a 26 year old alcoholic about to enter treatment, many things about this documentary were very inaccurate. In my opinion this man was suffering from severe mental health issues aswell as being an alcoholic. I cannot help but feel like this 'documentary' is a complete hoax.

by Anonymousreply 52March 14, 2015 7:02 PM

This story had me fucked up I cried, he goes n for help and then less then 3 weeks die. Rip Ryan your story touched my life...

by Anonymousreply 53April 19, 2015 11:32 PM

that was horrible nothing for nothing the kid went in for help but they have to be weeded off and sometimes u might have to give him that drink the family wasnt enamblers they were prolonging his life sux that the rehab did not monitor they just keep u locked up shame on that rehabilitation center for not checking

by Anonymousreply 54April 22, 2015 5:02 PM

The rehab was careless and has been shut down.
