Aziz Ansari

Everyone under 30 at work finds him hilarious. On "Parks and Rec" he's incredibly annoying with terrible timing, so I checked out his standup, thinking it might be better. It's actually worse.

It's a generational thing, isn't it?

by Anonymousreply 81January 22, 2018 10:52 PM

Hate him.

by Anonymousreply 1December 30, 2012 11:51 PM

I love him. I love all the "Parks and Rec" people, actually.

I'd say it's more of a personal humor thing, though, OP.

by Anonymousreply 2December 30, 2012 11:53 PM

Hate him too

by Anonymousreply 3December 30, 2012 11:53 PM

I agree with r2's second statement, it really is your personal humor. I love shows like 30 Rock, Parks and Recreation, Portlandia, and other "absurdist" single-camera shows. My husband hates all of those but loves 3-camera comedies, especially ones with slapstick and toilet humor.

by Anonymousreply 4December 30, 2012 11:58 PM

What R2 and R4 said. I think he's hilarious, but it's not a generational thing.

by Anonymousreply 5December 30, 2012 11:59 PM

I like him.

by Anonymousreply 6December 31, 2012 12:00 AM

What sort of loser even talks to low-level under 30 employees at work?

by Anonymousreply 7December 31, 2012 12:06 AM

I'm 51 and think he's hilarious. Never watched P&R, though.

by Anonymousreply 8December 31, 2012 12:06 AM

I like all the single camera shows & especially P & R, but he is my least favorite on the show. That said, I think he is SUPPOSED to be our least favorite.

by Anonymousreply 9December 31, 2012 12:08 AM

I don't know anything about his comedy, but I think he's adorable. I want to snuggle with him naked under a fluffy down comforter on a cold night.

by Anonymousreply 10December 31, 2012 12:13 AM

r9, I agree with you about liking the single-camera comedies, and I get the fact that Ansari is supposed to be annoying and unlikable on P&R -- I just don't think he's good at it. The rest of the actors are a pretty skilled ensemble, and his whole thing is mugging.

by Anonymousreply 11December 31, 2012 12:19 AM

I think his stand-up is pretty hacky but I have to be honest - he makes me laugh. My dad who is pushing 60 and is definitely not a cool-dad type LOVES him, a fact which I can make neither heads nor tails of.

by Anonymousreply 12December 31, 2012 12:32 AM

He's interesting.

I've just seen his stand-up on Comedy Central though.

What little I've seen his comedy has these themes:

1) His nephew Harris, "fat, brown, and on the ground."

2) His hobnobbing with other celebrities, like JayZ, Beyonce, and R. Kelly, etc.

3) His "Randy" schtick.

4) His problems dating.

Might wear thin quickly -- time will tell.

by Anonymousreply 13December 31, 2012 12:34 AM

I think he's pretty funny. I was watching his latest stand up special last night and laughed out loud a couple of times.

by Anonymousreply 14December 31, 2012 12:36 AM

His sensuality is overpowering and causes me not to be able to pay much attention to his performance.

by Anonymousreply 15December 31, 2012 12:40 AM

The only comedian I've ever laughed at is Eddie Izzard, and I'm under 30.

by Anonymousreply 16December 31, 2012 12:46 AM

I think his comedy acts are pretty funny. What's not funny is that in every talk show appearance he's done he just does his act. Word for Word. Every time.

by Anonymousreply 17December 31, 2012 12:49 AM

I am old enough to be the OP's daddy and I think he is hilarious. He is also cute, I want him

by Anonymousreply 18December 31, 2012 1:10 AM

I think he's hilarious. Also, r10.

by Anonymousreply 19December 31, 2012 1:19 AM

He went to my high school. I don't find him amusing.

by Anonymousreply 20December 31, 2012 1:38 AM

r10, I would do that as well. I think he's adorable, especially those big eyes.

by Anonymousreply 21January 1, 2013 4:22 PM

I think he's very funny and charming on Parks & Rec and also in the movie 30 Minutes or Less. However, I heard two snippets from his stand-up act on comedy radio, and they were both dreadful.

by Anonymousreply 22January 1, 2013 4:30 PM

I think he is funny, especially on Parks and Recreation (especially the first season). I like his comedy specials OK, but I prefer him in TV shows, movies, and on talk shows. I think he is cute and would like to cuddle with him, too. He has gay friends, too, that he talks about in his standup routine so that is a plus.

by Anonymousreply 23January 1, 2013 4:35 PM

He's horrible, but we need an Arab-American comic to ease the guilt over our actions in Iraq and Afghanistan.

by Anonymousreply 24January 1, 2013 4:40 PM

NBC has more East Asian sitcom characters than African American sitcom characters.

by Anonymousreply 25January 1, 2013 4:44 PM

No thread about his epic Twitter fight with Rupert Murdoch?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 27January 14, 2015 1:22 AM

No one called out R24 for referring to him as an Arab-American?

by Anonymousreply 28January 14, 2015 1:35 AM

He's like a peppy little Pakistani lesbian.

by Anonymousreply 29January 14, 2015 7:55 AM

I could listen to him for hours and never so much as start to laugh. And that high-pitched whiny voice and self-adulation without self-awareness gives me a new appreciation for that comic genius Dane Cook.

by Anonymousreply 30January 14, 2015 8:29 AM

I just want to eat his ass, like Marnie on Girls.

by Anonymousreply 31January 14, 2015 11:38 AM

Is he Muslim? His name is suspect.

by Anonymousreply 32January 14, 2015 11:45 AM

I want his pink and brown.

by Anonymousreply 33January 14, 2015 11:52 AM

I enjoy his comedy and I'm in the over 60 club. Fuck you Harris, I do exist.

by Anonymousreply 34January 14, 2015 2:28 PM

Not funny. Also, the fact that he only relates to black men, and compares himself to them, is a little strange.

by Anonymousreply 35January 14, 2015 2:33 PM

I love Parks & Rec but Ansari wore really thin really quickly. His whole shtick is about being young and trendy -- it's his character on P&R, it's in those Netflix blurbs about his standup, it's everywhere. So tiresome.

by Anonymousreply 36January 14, 2015 2:39 PM

Parks and Rec got so bad. I tried watching the premiere last night and it was unwatchable.

by Anonymousreply 37January 14, 2015 3:03 PM

Same here, R30.

by Anonymousreply 38January 14, 2015 3:15 PM

Gay?

by Anonymousreply 39June 16, 2015 2:04 AM

Is he a terrorist?

by Anonymousreply 40June 16, 2015 2:06 AM

R39 Yes but closeted. Never seen him on anything except the James Franco roast; he was reasonably funny on that.

I mentioned in another thread I used to fuck an Indian guy in college (and, no, his cum didn't taste like curry). Some of them are hot.

by Anonymousreply 41June 16, 2015 4:25 AM

R39 & r41 datalounge’s famously infallible gaydar and impeccable “insider sources” loooooool

by Anonymousreply 42January 15, 2018 1:43 AM

There’s currently another thread about him raping some girl

by Anonymousreply 43January 15, 2018 1:44 AM

loooooool = laughing out out out out out out out loud

by Anonymousreply 44January 15, 2018 1:47 AM

I'm a Gen Xer. I never watched Parks and Rec. But, I generally like Master of None.

by Anonymousreply 45January 15, 2018 1:54 AM

OP, it's not just a generational thing. I'm in my early 30s. I don't like him, either. Well, let me rephrase that, I thought he was perfectly fine in a small, supporting, novelty role in Parks & Rec, but he does NOT have the chops to carry a show and I'm truly puzzled by how acclaimed Master of None remains. And, yeah, his standup is not funny.

by Anonymousreply 46January 15, 2018 1:58 AM

He must have casting couched to become more famous because he is a funny looking guy. Someone is really pushing him and trying hard to make him happen. I hate when mediocre celebs are promoted than actual talented celebs. He is really not cute

by Anonymousreply 47January 15, 2018 2:04 AM

Is he uncut?

by Anonymousreply 48January 15, 2018 2:04 AM

Of course he is cut, he was raised Muslim.

by Anonymousreply 49January 15, 2018 2:31 AM

Humourlessness reputation*

by Anonymousreply 50January 15, 2018 3:04 AM

Oops wrong thread

by Anonymousreply 51January 15, 2018 3:05 AM

i'm watching Master of None right now (late to the party, yes). I find him and the series so MEH i can't believe it's so successful. He's not particularly funny. he's not original. Not witty. No nothing. It's just... ok. Haven't seen him in anything else.

by Anonymousreply 52January 21, 2018 12:33 AM

Would drink his cum.

by Anonymousreply 53January 21, 2018 12:38 AM

Young people are compelled to lie and say that he is funny so that they don't get labeled with the r word. Older people can be more honest about Ansari's "humor".

by Anonymousreply 54January 21, 2018 12:42 AM

I thought he was best on Parks and Recs when in smaller doses. He could be funny, but he could wear thin if on too much and a couple of his story lines went on too long and became repetitive (I do think he is talented though).

I for the most part liked Parks and Recs, although the middle years were the best. The first season was a little weak and it probably should have ended when Leslie Ann was elected to city councill or had her being on city council be the last season. I never did get through the final season.

by Anonymousreply 55January 21, 2018 12:46 AM

I wasn't impressed with his stand up at all, I thought his bits on Park & Rec were fine, and was pleasantly surprised by him during an interview with Marc Maron on Maron's podcast awhile back. The current media/social media outcry over an unpleasant sexual encounter is obnoxious and I feel bad for the guy. Its stupid.

by Anonymousreply 56January 21, 2018 12:52 AM

I think when he first came out, his early stand-up was hilarious.

His Master of None show is funny when it is about his parents and everyday things he encounters in life but when it is about his love life, it's tedious (oh, poor little me, the beautiful white girl doesn't love me).

by Anonymousreply 57January 21, 2018 12:54 AM

His obsession with white girls is pathetic. The cause of his current problems.

by Anonymousreply 58January 21, 2018 1:01 AM

I think his show appeals to the kind of bros who like 'Big Bang Theory'. It's not so much a comedy as a series of cliches blandly presented one after another. It would help if there were a laugh track so you knew when it was supposed to be funny.

by Anonymousreply 59January 21, 2018 1:07 AM

Terribly unfunny, the weakest link in P&R.

Also, he looks like a meerkat on meth.

by Anonymousreply 60January 21, 2018 1:12 AM

Not real familiar with him, but the current smear is disgraceful. He's no where near Weinstein, Moore, Trump, Clinton. The woman couldn't just say no? Please.

by Anonymousreply 61January 21, 2018 1:16 AM

agreed, r61.

by Anonymousreply 62January 21, 2018 1:17 AM

[quote] NBC has more East Asian sitcom characters than African American sitcom characters.

Which group has a larger population overall worldwide?

by Anonymousreply 63January 21, 2018 2:00 AM

[quote] I think his show appeals to the kind of bros who like 'Big Bang Theory'. It's not so much a comedy as a series of cliches blandly presented one after another. It would help if there were a laugh track so you knew when it was supposed to be funny.

Switching to a single-camera format will not make bad scripts good, and even the best ones lack the rewatchability factor of shows such as I Love Lucy, Golden Girls, and Mary Tyler Moore that I never get tired of.

Americans never stopped wanting network sitcoms, we just wanted good ones. Since the 1990s most of the truly innovative non-animated shows have been anywhere but the three networks. Nobody good wants to deal with that level of interference anymore if they don't have to.

by Anonymousreply 64January 21, 2018 2:03 AM

[quote]NBC has more East Asian sitcom characters than African American sitcom characters.

Who? I'm having a hard time thinking of even one, unless you count Manny Jacinto, and he's really a Pacific Islander.

by Anonymousreply 65January 21, 2018 2:05 AM

I find him to be insufferable, much a product of his upbringing.

by Anonymousreply 66January 21, 2018 2:26 AM

The funny thing is in Master of None, he complains how the Entertainment industry stereotypes Indian men. Well, he isn't doing such a good job with the fellow Indian women who he appears not to like on the show, preferring the white meat; he seems pretty self-loathing.

I hope the babe story was a lesson learned by this idiot.

by Anonymousreply 67January 21, 2018 4:36 AM

R61 I agree completely. Totally a false equivalency with regards to the other cases (Cosby, Weinstein, etc.) and really hurts the cause of women who are truly harassed (or worse.)

by Anonymousreply 68January 21, 2018 4:53 AM

Meh. He's aight.

by Anonymousreply 69January 21, 2018 5:21 AM

He was my worst date EVER!

by Anonymousreply 70January 21, 2018 6:13 AM

After that bad date story ---which is completely embarrassing--- how can he do any shows or stand-ups? What do you joke about? I'd lay low for a couple of years.

by Anonymousreply 71January 21, 2018 7:25 AM

the bad date story is the best piece of american comedy of the last 5 years. Too bad it was not intentional.

by Anonymousreply 72January 21, 2018 5:53 PM

[quote] the bad date story is the best piece of american comedy

I think it would make a great comedy: starring Meryl Streep as Ashleigh Banfield, that Asian chick from The Last Jedi as Katie Way and Saorise Ronan as Abby, the Indian guy from Silicon Valley as Aziz

by Anonymousreply 73January 22, 2018 6:52 AM

R73, along those lines, Ansari could "reclaim" the narrative and make use of it in his act. Very meta. I think there is a lot of sympathy out there for him. And rightly so.

by Anonymousreply 74January 22, 2018 6:59 AM

[quote]the Indian guy from Silicon Valley as Aziz

Kumail Nanjiani, now more famous for "The Big Sick," is Pakistani, not Indian.

by Anonymousreply 75January 22, 2018 5:53 PM

i just watched Season 2 of MoN. The Bobby Cannavale characther is obviously based on Anthony Bourdain and he's a SEX PEST!!! Was Aziz tryin' to tell us something?????

by Anonymousreply 76January 22, 2018 6:14 PM

I can't stand Parks & Rec (including him), but Master of None is pretty good, if only for birthing Lil Funions.

by Anonymousreply 77January 22, 2018 6:16 PM

i can't stand the actor who played his best friend, you know the fat giant who wears hotpants a lot. he's a terrible actor, and the character is a retard.

by Anonymousreply 78January 22, 2018 7:09 PM

well, the big best friend makes Aziz looks like a little rat. The height disparity is a hoot.

by Anonymousreply 79January 22, 2018 8:31 PM

Close enough, R75. He can play Indian.
