The exploitation film ANGEL from 1984
Oh my god. I was obsessed with this movie when I was 8 or so! I remember being in the video store thinking THIS is the best movie of all time! The picture of the hooker by day/student by night mesmerized me. I knew this movie just had to be the scariest, dirtiest, and best movie ever. AND it was rated R!! MY mother would always laugh and say Yeah, RIGHT! when I would beg her to rent it.
Anyway, I had not even thought about this film in years until the other day. I finally watched the entire thing on Youtube. I expected it to be horrible but it was actually quite good. Completely campy with some great supporting roles.
Donna Wilkes played the heroine in Jaws 2 and disappeared off the face of the earth it seems. She was quite good in this- she had some really bad acting moments but some very solid ones. She had a lot of charisma.
Does anyone remember this B film? I guess it was quite successful for what it was at that time.

It was successful enough that there were 2 sequels, "Avenging Angel" and "Angel III: The Final Chapter," neither of which starred Ms. Wilkes. (In fact, the character was played by 3 different actresses in the 3 films.)

I have no desire to see the sequels other than the fact that the hilarious Susan Tyrell is back in part 2! I have googled Donna WIlkes and I guess she had drug problems. I would not be surprised if she died. Come back to us Donna!

Well I guess I am a dildo. I just found a WIkipedia page on her and she is apparently alive and well!

I was also obsessed with this movie, never got to see it as I was a wee gayling of 9 myself. Love, love, loved Donna Wilkes as free-wheelin party girl Jackie from Jaws II and her one season stint on the failed MacLean Stevenson sitcom "Hello Larry". Think she was replaced for Season Two by Kim Richards or maybe Kim played her sister and she was replaced by someone else. Donna Wilkes if you're reading this and I think you are. Your relatively minor oeuvre has impacted my life. Thank you.

Just looked up her imdb page. You're not the dildo, OP, I am. The only thing I remember her from is Hello Larry. (starring McLean Stevenson!)

I loved this film. I found it very smart.
SPOILERS* SPOILERS* SPOILERS* SPOILERS* SPOILERS* SPOILERS*
I loved the fight between the killer and the drag queen. The killer is dressed as a Hari Krishna and the drag queen is in a pale orange chiffon gown which mirrors the Krishna monks robes. The killer rips the wig off the drag queen leaving him in a wig cap; so, the are both apparently "bald" and in similar orange robes.
I also loved when the baby is dropped from the railing and a Cabbage Patch doll was used as the baby's stunt double. For those who don't get it, a cabbage patch doll looks nothing like a real baby.

It was very ahead of its time- TWO main gay supporting characters who despite being eccentric, were very funny and well developed.
It is rare that a film that I coveted as a kid holds up to the mystical fantasies in my head. This one comes close!

It seemed to derail her career. She had only one credit per year for the next few years...

Gene Siskel gave this a thumbs down while Ebert loved it.

I love it too. It used to be on HBO all the time when I was 13/14 and I would watch it every time it was on. Susan Tyrell is great in it too.

Is this the film with a psycho named Ramrod who drove an old Ford Bronco?

No, R13 ... Ramrod was a character in this campy 80's classic which also featured Nina Blackwood. I think Season Hubley, as the hooker, dressed up in a slutty wedding gown and came down the stairs to a room where an old guy was in a casket. He grabbed her or sat up and scared the shit out of her.

I didn't see all of it, just bits and pieces here and there on cable way back when.
The teenage hooker movie I remember most is Dawn: Portrait of a Teenage Runaway.

I, too, was obsessed with this movie as a kid. I remember being fixated on the killer, who I thought was hot (loved it when he sucked that egg while bathing nude in a tub in the middle of his living room). I bet if I watched this, a whole flood of memories would come back. Haven't seen it in years.

Lisa Whelchel was on Jenny Jones, saying she was almost Donna Wilkes' replacement on "Hello, Larry." She said the original actress "had a problem with drugs." But Whelchel had to choose between "Hello, Larry" and "The Facts of Life," and we know the outcome. Krista Errickson (from "Little Darlings") ended up replacing Wilkes.

So Susan Tyrell, who portrayed Solly, is a double amputee due to a rare illness. Or so it says on her IMDB page.

Coincidentally, Donna did do a guest spot on "Gimme a Break" as the leader of a punk rock band.

R13 .... you bat me to it.
"Vice Squad"
That was another hooty classic of that time.
Season Hubley of all people as a hooker. Wings Hauser as the pimp who stalks her after she rats him out for beating up Nina Blackwood (one of the first MTV VJs) with a wire hanger.
And that casket scene with William Hickey... HA

Someone needs to do a gay version of Angel, with a student by day/callboy by night

Meh, this was alright, but I can't help but feel like they weren't sure if they were trying to make an 80's teen sex / dramedy or an exploitation slasher flick. The movie doesn't really succeed at doing either, but a rather enjoyable balance is met regardless.
Angel is an A student by day, but a hooker by night. When a maniac necrophiliac begins brutally murdering prostitutes, Angel takes it upon herself to seek justice.
In the end not funny enough to be a comedy, not risque enough to be exploitation, to little nudity to fit properly into the teen sex genre, virtually no gore so it's not a horror movie. Really just a bizarre little footnote in the cannon of 80's cheese, but a pretty enjoyable one regardless.
Definitely worth a watch if you want something different, just not as good as I think it could have been . Was definitely expecting a much darker comedy, and much more sleaze.
