Blind Item: Eldergay Singer
"This elderly singer who was a sex symbol in the '60s and early '70s used to pay for sex acts with men so he could be discreet about his sexuality. As he is getting older and dealing with health issues, he finally came out to his wife a few months ago. The wife claimed she has known their entire marriage and agreed to stay because she claimed that she still loves him and always has, and claims she'll be his best friend for as long as they live."
My first thought was Sedaka, but was he ever considered a "sex symbol"?

No mention of health issues, but lots of mentions of heterosexual dalliances and current performances on wikipedia for Tom, though.
It would be ironic if it was Englebert. My mother loved him and had a huge poster on the door to the attic next to her vanity.

I thought of Sherman and Humperdinck, in that order. Jones has admitted bisexuality in the past, so he's out.
And Sedaka's wife has always known, by way of the horse's mouth. He told her way back in the late sixties, to which she - quite the Hollywood Wife even back then - responded "as long as you don't embarass me in public." - which he hasn't.
I know Sedaka's agent - and rentboy procurer - from the 70's (now an oldies show promoter/producer).

Scratch a homophobe R29. Google Elvis and Tom Jones and look at the images. Also Nick Adams. Women were accessories. His early relationships were mostly chaste. Later drugs made him chaste. Lots of stories about Elvis and guys. Even Jones himself mentioned Elvis used to check him out in the shower. What they were doing together in a shower, I don't know.

I'm not sure about Tom Jones being the singer. The actress who plays the character "Elvira" was on Howard Stern a few years ago and related a story how she started out as a teen showgirl in Vegas. One day, Tom Jones asked her on a date and basically raped her (she said she was a virgin when he did this).
She also said she heard from other showgirls that Tom had a rep for cutting a swath through young females while performing in the NV clubs.

But surely if it were Tom they would have said the person was a sex symbol THROUGHOUT the 70's as this was the height of his fame in the US(?) Also, he's had too many women to suddenly turn 100% gay. It sounds to me like we need to identify a singer who has been (seemingly) faithful to the wife.... like..... I dunno, Cat Stevens? Bob Dylan? Roger Daltry?

It's not Roger Daltrey. He and his wife had an understanding: she provided children and spent her life caring for them and for Daltrey, and he could fuck any woman he wanted. He's talked openly about it, saying, "Going on tour was like being a kid in a candy store. I couldn't say no, and told my wife so. She's a saint; she understood and went along with it."
Also, a groupie's memoir talked about this transvestite the groupie met who was very beautiful. The Who were in town and the groupie phoned up Daltrey and told him about her gorgeous friend who wanted to meet him. Daltrey talked to the tranny and made a date. At the last minute, the groupie and the tranny chickened out, afraid that Daltrey might get violent when he made the discovery.

[quote]Rod the Mod was well known in the mid-sixties
As a sex symbol?
The blind item clearly states the guy in question was a sex symbol in the sixties and early seventies. "Rod the Mod" was the lead singer of the Kinks and the Jeff Beck group, hardly a known entity on his own. He was mostly known for his haircut, hence the nickname, which conveyed anything but sex (and don't even bring up the Rod part, that was his name, not his dick).
His solo career began in 1969 and did not trade on sexy songs/moves until the late seventies, which hardly qualifies him as a sex symbol of the sixties and EARLY seventies.

Engleburt Humperdinck - or however you spell it. No question about it. He was a "handsome hunk" and always pinged to me, from the beginning. As for an illegitimate child, isn't justin Beiber being sued for paternity too? Absolutely the best way to seen straight is to be sued for paternity.

I'm the guy who wrote about Tom Jones in the Park Lane Hotel back in 1970. I was having dinner with my cousin and his "beard," a woman who worked at the Park Lane. My cousin lived down the street in a hotel his father owned. This woman, I forget her name, let's call her Diane, told me (an out gay) that she was called up to a celebrity suite at the Park Lane one night and Tom Jones answered the door in a towel with a veritable male orgy going on behind him. I didn't believe it. "But he's married!" I said. She just snorted. My cousin chuckled and looked at me like I was naivete personnified.
BTW, TJ isn't that special down there. That's just a rumor. (Or a sock.)

More than Tom Jones and Nick Adams, I think Jerry Schilling was Elvis' main man. Ever since he showed up to play a game of touch football when they were teens. Jerry was younger, very handsome, and devoted to Elvis. Everywhere you would expect to see Elvis with his wife (like getting his badge from Nixon) you see Jerry. If you listen to him in interviews, the lisp is quite noticeble and he pings out of the park. I believe he finally married sometime in the 80s. But if you google Jerry Schilling and Elvis Presley and look at the photos, it's obvious what they were up to.
He was Elvis' Scott Thorsen.

Paul Anka. A friend was a rent boy in Las Vegas.

Did Elvis have body image issues? It occurred to me while looking at R67's link, that I've never seen Elvis' bare torso. He wore open-necked shirts or v-neck tops, but never more than that--even in the pool or Hawaii pics.
What was up with him?

R167. Just google Tom Jones Speedo. He was average.

Elvis had a baby bird body. No real muscle tone, given to chub. His speed use kept him thin most of the time, but he didn't work out (except for Karate) and so he was embarrassed to take off his shirt in the water.
Re the gay rumors. Remember Peggy Lipton? She was with him one night...
"In her memoir, model and actress Peggy Lipton writes that she felt trapped in Presley's bed as the star was impotent with her and she "couldn't just amble out into the next room to get a breath because all his guys were in the front of the suite gearing up for show time. I could hear their piercing laughter and loud voices against the background of the blaring TV."[30] Buzz Cason even saw a fascinating "guest-bedroom with two-way mirrors, where the highly mischievous Memphis Mafia clowns could eavesdrop on visitors who might slip away there for a little romantic action."[31] According to Raphael's eye-witness account, actress Natalie Wood was upset when Presley refused to have sexual intercourse with her. She made a snide remark to the members of the Memphis Mafia that she "was not the only one to think Elvis and the guys might be homosexual, especially since Elvis often wore pancake makeup and mascara offstage to accentuate his brooding intensity, à la Tony Curtis and Rudolph Valentino, his favorite movie actors."

Could it be Fabian, my dreamboat from the 60's and 70's? He was drafted during the Vietnam Nam war but was declared 4F after showing a note from his doctor that he could have 'homosexual tendencies.' He had such a smokin' body in his Playgirl layout in 1973.

Lots of guesses for the late Robin Gibb but he wasn't the sex symbol - Barry Gibb was.
Saw Barry and Robin in an documentary about the Bee Gees career and Maurice's passing and Barry was veering into high camp at times. That and the thick lacquered bouffant screamed (falsetto style) MARY!

Yes, I know they said singer. But the whole C&T divorce thing would possibly make more sense in that context.

If it's Tom Jones that is interesting....buth Jones and his old friend Dusty Springfield had to play straight to get that money and sell those records....though Dusty ran out of fucks to give on that front a long time ago (before she died).

R74 You created such a great visual image with your Freddy and the Freeloaders post.
The band which recorded Do The Freddy! was Freddy and the Dreamers.
Freddy the Freeloader was a popular hobo character who was a regular part of Red Skelton's comedy act and a regular on Red's weekly tv show. Maybe at some point the two acts intersected onstage, I don 't know. But the image of Freddy leading a chorus of Red Skeltons singing and doing the Freddy is pretty damned hilarious.
Gary Puckett's songs made teenage girls in my town think he was a creepy skeevy guy, so sex symbol? Not so much.

[quote]Was Neil Diamond a sex symbol? He had a great face and was quite handsome in his youth.
Absolutely a sex symbol during this era AND he had health problems back in 2008, but he wasn't married in 2011 when this BI came out. If this was a current BI, I'd say that was a good guess, since his new wife just screams beard.
Love R164's story!

Rod Stewart was in the Small Faces. He was not in the Kinks, but could have been in a band before the Kinks became the Kinks and hit the top 40 with the "British invasion". I imagine a lot of those guys worked together in different formulations, but the Small Faces was the band Stewart was in when he became famous and before he went solo. I was a teenage fan of all the Brit bands at the time.

What about John Davidson? He was a wholesome hottie when he was younger, and he did play a tranny on Streets of San Francisco and was doing chorus boys during State Fair.
His primary fame was as a 60s-70s pop singer.

Davidson wasn't seen as a sex symbol like Tom Jones. Women would toss their hotel room keys on state along with their panties at Jones. Davidson was just another wholesome guy like Jack Jones.
